Naruto Character Analysis

Pain/Nagato: A Complex Antagonist

Pain, also known as Nagato, is often regarded as one of the best-written antagonists in "Naruto." His character embodies the victim of the Curse of Hatred, driven by the trauma of losing his parents and best friend due to war and politics [1]. Pain's philosophy that peace can be established through shared suffering challenges Naruto's ideologies and significantly impacts the protagonist's development [1:1]. The parallels between Nagato and Naruto are evident, with both characters having similar backgrounds and being trained by Jiraiya, making their confrontation a climactic moment in the series [1:7].

Sasuke Uchiha: The Embodiment of Love and Vengeance

Sasuke's character arc is deeply rooted in love and vengeance. Despite being fueled by revenge, Sasuke's actions are often motivated by love for his friends and family [2]. His journey from seeking revenge against Itachi to questioning his ideals after learning the truth about his brother showcases his complex emotional state [2:6]. The Uchiha curse, borne out of love, highlights the intense emotions that drive Sasuke and other Uchiha members [2:4]. Sasuke's impulsivity and internal conflict make him a multifaceted character who struggles with his identity and purpose [5:9].

Obito Uchiha: A Tragic Figure

Obito is a character whose life was turned upside down by tragedy and manipulation. Initially, he was a hopeful individual, but after being brainwashed by Madara and experiencing significant loss, he became a tragic antagonist [3:3]. Obito's transformation into a villain reflects what could have happened to Naruto had he lost hope [3:4]. Despite his poor choices, Obito's character is seen as complex by many fans, offering a different perspective on the Shinobi world [3:2].

Naruto Uzumaki: Growth Through Relationships

Naruto's character is defined by his unwavering determination to protect those dear to him. Throughout the series, he seeks advice from those he considers knowledgeable, demonstrating his willingness to learn and grow [4]. While some argue that his character regressed in "Shippuden," others appreciate the small details that contribute to his development [4:2]. Naruto's interactions with characters like Pain and Sasuke further shape his understanding of the world and his role within it.

Personality Typing in Naruto

Fans have attempted to categorize Naruto characters using MBTI personality types. For instance, Naruto is often seen as an ENFP or ESFP, reflecting his energetic and people-oriented nature [5:3]. Sasuke is frequently typed as an ISFP, highlighting his introspective and emotionally driven decisions [5:1]. These analyses provide additional insights into the characters' behaviors and motivations, adding another layer to their complexity.

It's obviously very subjective, but from the start of the Pain Arc right to the end, he's a character that embodies the victim of the Curse of Hatred.

His philosophy is deeply rooted in his trauma of losing his parents to war. We then see him losing his best friend due to politics and well and in the interim, his home village becoming collatoral damaged by larger nations to wage war and ultimately cause suffering for his own people.

He argues that peace can be established through another's suffering so they can comprehend the pain they're inflicting on others. Trauma bonding is the word, an mutual understanding of pain and suffering.

His desire to make the entire Shinobi World understand pain caused by the Curse of Hatred to bring about peace is very understandable and justifiable.

Suited with his god persona and powers, he becomes the perfect antogonist that embodies what the Curse of Hatred is and is the perfect product of a world that's dominated by sword and not diplomacy.

Not all anime and manga. But in Naruto yes.

There’s like checkboxes for a great villain.

Motives, backstory, impact on main character

Nagato wanted peace. He challenged Naruto’s views. They both had the same sensei. Nagato KILLED jiraiya. And also kakashi but yknow.

Obito on the other hand also wanted “peace” but moreso to end free will. And the whole rin rin rin thing didn’t help. Also he killed Neji, who was gone for like 90% of shippuden.

Nagato was a great foil for Naruto. A bit heavy-handed on the connection between them, but still fairly well done. Especially in terms of the "child of prophecy" angle. I really do dislike the trope, but I do like how it was executed here.

I would say even in anime/manga and outside other media he is iconic. For just how he challenges naruto's ideologies with that speech, even audience were sppechless. And that is the biggest impact I have seen in series with how it shapes and changes naruto as a protagonist.

I don't think it's controversial to say he's in top 10. Such a shame that Shippuden only went downhill after it though.

Pain is indeed a wonderful antagonist, and Nagato, as a victim of the curse of hatred, is really a "what Naruto could become", in case he fell victim of the curse, after the death of Jiraiya.

And the fact that Yahiko (the main "face" of Pain) looks like an adult Naruto with orange hairs imho clearly reflects it.

It felt like they were intentionally mirrored since the beginning for me.

Both Uzumaki, both trained by Jiraiya, both given damn near divine powers as children. Traumatic orphan upbringing (just like everybody else tbh)

Then the whole save the world or destroy them thing, and both having the power to do either one of those options

Exactly: there are so many parallels bewteen them, as you've pointed out.

And that's why Naruto vs Pain was such a "climatic" fight.

that's the whole point of the latter half of Jiraiya-boy's prophecy he received from gramps Toad Sage. he was destined to train youth that could very well decide the fate of the world -- the prophecy just never specified how many there would be and what would come of it.

turns out it was 2, and they were definitely two sides of the same coin.

And if we think about that, another great foil to Naruto was Chuunin Exam Gaara, as a "what Naruto could have been".

That's why imho Naruto managed to empathize so well with Gaara and Nagato: knowing what they had to face, he saw himself reflected in them, and he knew about their suffering.

I agree. When I watched Naruto way back when, Pain/Nagato was the best antagonist for me without a shadow of a doubt. There’s not one antagonist in the series that comes close to him.

yeah, they refused both Naruto and Kakashi's help adamantly. The Rain still benefitted from the rest of the great nations following behind naruto's ideology, however they wallowed in self-pity and it caused them damage in a different way than what was happening before.

Sasuke's character is the embodiment of love

Posted by n3verl00kback · in r/Naruto · 4 months ago

To me, sasuke's character is so interesting because although he is fueled by vengeance, love overpowered his vengeance in many situations. He was willing to die for his dear friends on numerous occasions and completely throw away his life goal of killing itachi. Of course, multiple events happened which ultimately led to Sasuke leaving the village, but his character was always coming from a place of love. Even after his first fight with Naruto, he didn't want to kill him, now some could say it was because he didn't want to end up like Itachi but I interpreted it as his bonds with Naruto were the reason he didn't kill him (Especially with the scene of them holding hands as children right before it). Overall I believe that his character was the prime example of "forced to hate, born to love".

The Uchiha curse is ultimately borne out of love.

They love so much that when they lose that love. It traumatizes them enough for the sharingan to appear and evolve.

Sasuke was my absolute favorite, as well as Madera and Itachi, Sasuke represented a lot of the stuff I went through when I was a kid.

Itachi would do anything to protect his little brother, a bond that exists between me and my own brother.

Madara betrayed by his closest friends, and his own family, eventually led him to become the main antagonist, he has to take his brother's eyesight just to be able to use his EMS, izuna was ok with it cause he would do anything for his brother.

The Uchiha had some of the most fucked up experiences and torturous moments of anyone out of the series, a cycle of being betrayed and suffering the most out of anyone, this is my reason for for my favorite characters, I feel as if they represent my own personal turmoil within myself.

n3verl00kback · OP · 4 months ago

Yes! It was just as much about love as it was about vengeance. You mentioned that Izuna gave his eyes to madara because he cares about him deeply. And itachi and sasuke would do anything for each other (sasuke after finding out the truth), and this makes the Uchihas relatable.

Sasuke journey was done well from being a ninja and willing to sacrifice himself for his teammates. To Thinking Itachi is the boogeyman, finding out the truth and hating the leaf village, his crash out 5ks era, then having his identity crisis after talking to Edo Itachi. That convo with Itachi lead him to changing his ideals/goals, after listening to the 5 kage about what it means to be a shinobi.

Which lead to the final showdown between Naruto and Sasuke about who had the better vision of Hokage. If Sasuke went back after Kakashi conversation like people wanted, then Shippuden wouldn’t be as interesting. I’m glad he wasn’t the mc sidekick like every other deuteragonist.

There are things that must be said.

Alright, Sasuke did horrible things for understadable reasons, doesn't make him less of a terrorist and murderer.

The reason why i dislike him, it's because instead of giving his friends the right to help him save them, he instead trusted only on his own power. That's both egoistical and an immense lack of humility.

I don't hate Sasuke, but i still believe he deserved a peaceful everafter locked inside a prison.

Considering your logic every Shinobi are murderers , either it's for a justified mission or for their own gains. Sasuke had the least body count when it comes to murder compared to the older Shinobi who participated in the previous war and while it was validated because it was war, it was still murder. The kages weren't immaculately innocent either. During the kage summit arc Sasuke was practically having a crash out and was going insane and it was not even shown clearly if those samurais were really dead or just severely injured.

His "friends" are not really his friends if they can't even understand his goals. He also doesn't owe that fascist village anything. And I think he let the konoha officials (elders) go easy.

Btw, at the end he was so powerful there is no real way to stop him because of the rinnegan as he will find a way to break any seal they place on him.

n3verl00kback · OP · 4 months ago

You gotta realize he was basically mentally ill by this point in shippuden with learning the truth about itachi, which he dedicated his entire life to, and his reason for living completely destroyed after the truth being revealed. He had a new goal by then and he knew his friends wouldn't be able to help him or understand him, and besides naruto, none of them really tried to understand him and why he was doing what he was doing. His entire mind was corrupted by vengeance and love for his brother and trying to avenge itachi, he didn't care about anything else. Until the end of course where he realized he was alone and he shouldn't have disregarded his friends who were there for him. But yeah he was a terrorist and murderer who probably should have gotten more consequences.

Obito Character Analysis

Posted by shuaib1220 · in r/Naruto · 3 years ago

I was on Tumblr and I found this phenomenal character analysis on Obito by aloluptitude. If you would like to read it, click here. Note that it's incredibly lengthy and will take some time to completely read from start to finish. I think its a great read and I do think Obito is a somewhat misunderstood character.

Recently, I changed my opinion about who I considered to be my favorite character from Naruto. I used to really like Minato because he had a sort of suaveness that I didn't see in other characters. However, upon rethinking the entire series, I personally liked Obito more due to the complex nature of his character. The parallels he had to Naruto were incredibly shocking, and he's the one Naruto villain that I think Talk-no-Jutsu had a true, personal effect on. The fact that Obito transitioned from such a kind-hearted person who was tethered to life by the bonds he cherished to someone who upheld such a nihilistic view of reality is incredibly interesting to me. Towards the end we truly see that Obito suffers from understanding his true identity, for the majority of his life, he disguised his true identity with the belief that individualism is just a construct of this 'fake' world. Everyone has their own moral values and standards, and I truly don't consider his actions to be 'redeemed', and tbh nor did he. He was truly an interesting character and I loved reading about him. Up to know, I firmly support the view that Obito was the best written character in Naruto, I appreciate the nuanced aspect of his character. And I respect if you disagree. Thoughts?

Tbh there was nothing complex about his character, in fact he was too simple and unrealistic, that’s a problem you find in all naruto’s characters problem overall , the surface level approach , about the parallel , all the villains have parallels with naruto , naruto have serious problems with characterization

It occurred to me how well written Naruto's character is

Posted by lauraakabeibi · in r/Naruto · 4 years ago

SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T WATCHED NARUTO & NARUTO SHIPPUDEN

With that out of the way...

We all know Naruto's way of ninja is to protect those dear to him, and it seems paramount to his character and personality that he does things with and for his comrades. But a nice little thing which I've noticed while re-watching the anime is that every single time he's learning about something new he'll go to the person he considers most knowledgeable in the domain for advice. He went for tree-climbing advice to Sakura, he asked for help from Jirayia while learning Rasengan, he went to Asuna for advice on wind chakra... you get my point.

I think that reveals something interesting about Naruto's character. He absolutely hates being second, so to me it seems a bit counter-intuitive that such a person would accept there's someone better they could take advice from. But it just goes to show you that his strong desire to become #1 is fueled by the bonds he has with others - he's doing it because he wants those who he cherishes to be safe and happy and not because he selfishly wants the title of Hokage.

That ties so nicely with what the Will of Fire represents, it still bends my brain how well written the animes & the manga are!

TL;DR: Naruto asks for help whenever he learns something new because he has the Will of Fire to become stronger.

How do people think Sasuke, the person that makes most of his most crucial decisions based on what he's feeling at the moment, is an INTJ? Like when he spares Naruto or his entire Itachi revenge plan or leaving the village, and the list goes on. They just think F's can't think logically or act cold, even though that's truly not the case.

He's clearly not triggered by "thing" problems, but he is triggered by how other people stack up against himself and also about not getting the recognition and love he feels like he deserves. He interprets basically anything (from Naruto lol) as an insult, which is like IP "people" problems on steroids. No way he's an IJ with that much of a fragile ego.

He also makes decisions introvertedly too, in that he makes decisions based on what he things is right/sensible, and then may consider the perspectives of others later (takes him until like episode370 to actually get around to this). All of this points towards Sasuke being an IxxP from at least two different angles.

I would argue he doesn't base his decisions based on feeling. Everyone has feelings and bases their decisions on them, but what makes a Ti decider different from an Fi decider? It's Simply that a "feeler" processes his logic and reasoning best extrovertedly by talking it outloud and pinging off of others, but it feels uncomfortable and out of his element, while processing his feelings internally and he does so by obligation; whereas a "thinker" processes his feelings and values best externally by talking it out and checking in with others, while processing their reasoning internally and by obligation.

I would argue Sasuke is absolutely a thinker because when he lashes out and "debates" with Naruto >!and Itachi during the war!<, it's about what's important to them and he's clearly processing his hate and turmoil in an uncomfortable position, whereas when he changes his mind it's after sitting on new information for a while. Leading up to the aforementioned ep370, >!Sasuke asks Hashirama for his side of the story, which includes both T and F information, in order for Sasuke to learn the truth and make his decision based on that. I believe this looks like he's challenging his own Di ego and his own T framework of how the world works by going to the oldest source for he can get, and he thinks it through silently while listening to the story.!< He's listening in a calm way like he's in his element, even though what's going on internally is rocking his entire world. I do this myself in the same way.

I could go into those perceiving functions too, but I agree with that Ni obligation. I'll just leave it there.

For those reasons I think Sasuke is pretty clearly an ISTP with Ti first and Fe last.

From what I've picked up, Sasuke has been pretty silent in processing his emotions. When he was lashing out, it wasn't him discussing his emotions he was lashing out after not talking about his emotions, making him bottle it up and suddenly burst and lash out. And what new information withheld him from killing Naruto in their first actual fight?

Yes, the new information does change his goals, but his mental processing and decision-making is still deeply rooted in his emotional state, from revenge on Itachi to revenge on Danzo, from revenge to the Leaf to going back to the Leaf. All those major life decisions have been influenced mostly by his emotions rather than logic, because logically there was no reason to take revenge on the Leaf since all the people oppressing his clan at that point were already gone.

And the only reasons he ever even talked about his emotions was if he needed anything or if he was driven into a corner he almost never does so freely.

And one other thing the Uchiha are known for being the most emotional clan because of the curse, and not saying they can't be emotional, but more that Sasuke really does not talk enough about his emotions for someone that's supposed to have much more intensified emotions. They're very emo 😔

He almost ignores reality and the facts, which is something Fi types can do when young, thinking their Fi conclussions are true despite all proof jand in his case, he is convinced that no one is going to help him and he needs to do everything alone and be an emo to get his goal, when if he thought for even 2 seconds, the chances of him getting his revenge alone vs with the help of proved friends is... ugh. But yeah, most of his judgements are quick and are not based on facts or reality, he takes them very personally too, so his dominant function is probably introverted and judging, feeling since it's gut based more than logic based, so I say Fi all the way.

depends on the time

For example, from the beginning to the end of the original series, he is an obnoxious and rude stubborn brat, but incredibly loyal to those he loves to the point that he will fight to the death for his friends.

very needy of affection and who, for better or worse, does not respect people's personal space

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcReswxjFa0I2C8FOhPYTduw0915FGPrZ_3p3BA60dPqbDyIFkmWsS1I0LgQ&s=10

He can also be very perspective, for example, when Sasuke negotiates with Orochimaru to give him the scroll in the chunin exams. Naruto points out that this is a stupid idea because it does not guarantee that Orochimaru will leave them alone, which turns out to be correct.

He also feels admiration for his rivals, since when Sasuke shows fear for Orochimaru, Naruto says that he is an imposter since the real Sasuke is a very brave person.

Sasuke is the Best Character in Naruto

Let me start by saying i love Naruto, but i've always been more interested and entertained by Sasuke's story then Naruto's, I think Naruto should've been way more focused on his goal of become hokage and saving the Ninja World. Sasuke has the biggest Emotional Complex in the entire series.

Sasuke really suffered, it's unlike anything i've ever seen in entertainment, Sasuke had everything..he had a family, a brother who loved him more then anything in the world and a mother who wanted him to be his best, a entire clan of people who related to him. And He loses all of it because the Ninja World they exist in pressured his brother into destroying his family and clan in order to save his friends and contemporaries.

Then if it wasn't hard on him enough, he kills the only person who he cared about the most and who loved him more then life itself because he misunderstood him, it was what Itachi wanted, but even Itachi wished he had more time with his dear brother.

Everyone should've had teared up when Itachi apologized and showed his brother love for the last time before he died, even while his brother still believed he was cruel and murderous person.

Actually I'm rewatching OG Naruto right now and Naruto states exactly that when he is talking to Gaara. He says without Iruka, Kakashi, Sakura and Sasuke treating him with love and like a real person, he would have gone down the same dark path as Gaara and become a killer like him. He recognised Gaara's dark thought patterns and could relate to it.

What makes iruka special is that it took most people seeing naruto's heroism to believe in him. Iruka saw how shitty naruto's life was and his empathy was stronger than his hate.

Yeah, Iruka. He was the first to care about Naruto

Iruka being the one to help pick Naruto up after Jiraiya died is still one of the best parts of the manga.

Raman guy was the first to not treat him like garbage, but Iruka was the first to actually believe in him.

absolutely iruka. the validation naruto gets from him is invaluable to his self-worth and he's also the root cause of naruto's determination. not to mention he taught naruto more than just combat skills - he also taught him the importance of friendship and cherishing others.

otherwise, plenty of other figures in his life help him breed strategy and power. but iruka reigns supreme bc of his influence on naruto's heart/emotional maturity too

Naruto's character

Naruto's kindness may seem excessive and idealistic, but regardless of that, he showed that even among all that is bad from the surroundings, family and society that treated him with all the worst, he did not succumb to evil and the dark side in him, although sometimes it showed you that Naruto was easily going to go down the path of evil and become evil, for example in the first episode itself in front of Nagato also the moment he broke, and secondly when he went to him, he actually intended to kill him! But to avoid repeating the cycle of hatred and revenge, Naruto showed great maturity in that scene and decided to hear the enemy's justification for attacking the village. Yes, I partially agree that Naruto would have been better to get rid of the roots of Konoha, those old people who are the cause of what we saw, because they are not as good as we saw and may have deceived us because we see it from the side of the hero being responsible for his village ... Naruto as a character may have flaws like anyone else, but to implement your principles, ideas and worldview despite all you hear from impossible, no, the world is bad and must be destroyed, etc... is a very prominent good sign in the character

What is your character analysis on kawaki?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/Boruto · 2 years ago

We know that Kawaki is someone that had nothing, but gained everything when he met Naruto. Do you think even now that he has stolen everything from Boruto and Code, he will feel whole? What route do you see him going?

Kawaki grew up being constantly treated as an object, be it by his dad, or Jigen, or Kara.

Then he met Naruto.

He didn't realize it, but his obsession with Naruto grew to the point that he treats Naruto as an object - and now he keeps in sealed in Daikokuten - a dimension typically meant for sealing objects.

It's quite sad that he became just like his abusers without even realizing it himself.

Let's see:

  1. Kawaki is someone who is intended to be the opposite of Boruto. Boruto who himself is a mix of Naruto and Sasuke. Boruto is extroverted and cares about his friends like Naruto. But he's also drawn towards the life of Sasuke. Boruto's fighting style is more efficient and skillful like Sasuke's. Boruto's life journey also resembles Sasuke's. But he also has the optimism and talk no jutsu of Naruto.
  2. Kawaki on the other hand, personality wise is a lot like Sasuke. Considers only cold hard logic to solve problems. Disregard for friends other than Naruto. Obsessive. But yet, his life story resembled Naruto's until now. Kawaki who never understood what a normal life is suddenly gained it all. He's also not a prodigy like Boruto.
  3. But there is a key difference in Kawaki and every other character here. Kawaki didn't earn his happiness. Kawaki is like an animal who just found out there is more to life than just surviving. But like an animal, Kawaki doesn't understand how the world or society works. So his methods are extreme and obsessive.
  4. Kawaki is also, most likely what would happen if Adult Naruto took kid Sasuke under his wing. Because Sasuke wouldn't earn and understand all that happiness, he would also turn obsessive.
  5. Right now he treats Naruto like he treats his need for hunger, breathing, thirst, etc. He has a family but doesn't understand what it is. The show probably ends with him having that realization just like Sasuke.

There is probably a lot more to his character in the future.

Pretty much well detailed except that kawaki is indeed prodigy considering how he was able to pick up ninjutsu without a formal training and usin jutsu with one hand only done by adult sasuke and minato so far, not sure if boruto could’ve done those with less resources at his disposal

No I wouldn't call Kawaki a prodigy. He picked up ninjutsu when he was 14. That's way older than the age an average shinobi learns ninjutsu. Even in the episode where Naruto teaches him ninjutsu, Boruto was unimpressed, showing he could learn that fast if not faster at a much younger age. He was also trained by jigen, so he already had instincts. His body is a scientific ninja tool too. That would explain why he can use ninjutsu with one hand. Boruto added nature style to a rasengan subconsciously. That's something Jonin kakashi failed to do and created chidori. Boruto was chunin level at 11. I doubt Kawaki is anywhere near Boruto in terms of skill and intellect.

I think that he will get used to the affection and attention that Boruto received, however, in the end Jigen will unfortunately win and he will be like a broken vase that does not feel full with anything, but will cling to what It is not like that, 😕.
