ORIGINAL POST

This is my first fully acoustic guitar that I bought, new, at eighteen. Before this I had a fender telecoustic (which sound terrible!). This is eight years wear of consistent casual play. I really cherish every scratch from my pick. Ibanez makes some great guitars.

NGD - 000-18 - my first Martin

Posted by TimmySoup · in r/martinguitar · 6 months ago

Normally don’t do NGD posts, but this one was a bit special for me. Been on the lookout for a new acoustic for a while now. Tossed up many options but today was the day I spent a long time at a few stores trying a few different things.

Was keen on something this shape, having already owned a dreadnought (my faithful Epi PR350S that I’ve owned for ~25 years).

On the list was a Gibson J45 (not quite the shape I wanted), Maton 808 messiah, Martin OM28, and then 000-18 and 28.

The OM28 and J45 were first. The OM28 was a beauty to play, but just sounded weak and anaemic. Really wasn’t what I was expecting at all. J45 was lovely but ultimately wasn’t what I was after. Off to the 2nd shop which had the others. The 808 Messiah sounded beautiful but something about it I just didn’t get on with neck wise. This was confirmed when I picked up the 000-18 and loved the way it played straight away. The 000-28 was next and was night and day compared to the OM28 from the morning. So I’m convinced something must have been wrong with the OM.

Spent a good 45-60 mins switching between the 000-18 and 000-28. Loved them both immensely but mentally I think the 000-18 to me is kind of what I hear in my head when I think acoustic guitar. So it’s the one that came home. Honestly I think I just really like mahogany guitars.

Either way, this one’s a keeper.

This is why we need brick and mortar guitar shops. Shopping online you get the guitar you think you want. Shopping in person you get the guitar that speaks to you.

Absolutely. I’ve never bought a guitar sight unseen online. Got a lot of good guitar shops over here in Australia (Brisbane specifically), but it’s difficult to find multiples of the same thing in order to “pick the best one”. It’s more like, find a shop that has what you like, give it a good test and either grab it, or keep hunting.

I have been thinking about a nice acoustic. I was pleasantly surprised that Guitar Center has unlocked most of the higher end guitars. I played J45s, a hummingbird, 000-18, D18 and 2 D-28s. The 2 Martin D 28s were IT. The used one felt right as soon as I picked it up. The new was good, too. I LOVED being able to compare and switch back and forth. Now, I just need 3 grand to see my dream come home. 🙂

Gibson J-15: The Best Acoustic Guitar I Have Ever Played.

Posted by thomasmii · in r/AcousticGuitar · 15 days ago
post image

TL;DR: First post in this community. I have been playing guitars from every range for years and, bizarrely, have yet to find an acoustic guitar that I enjoy playing more than the pictured budget discontinued Gibson.

I have owned the pictured 2018 Gibson J-15 limited edition walnut burst for about 7 years and legitimately have yet to find a guitar I enjoy playing more. And I play acoustic guitars at music stores all the time, genuinely trying to find one.

I had just bought my first home and thought about commemorating the occasion, but I wasn't even thinking about buying a guitar. I just happened to visit Guitar Center during my free time as I had never been to that one.

I went into their NICE acoustic room (everyone that has been to Guitar Center knows what I'm talking about) and played just about everything in there without looking at price tags. I played Martins, Taylors, and even other Gibsons. And it wasn't even the first J15 I played. I played one that was sitting right next to it that was a dud and almost skipped it!

Then I picked it one up. And it was simply perfect. The percussiveness, the broad mids, the way its back shook against me, and that low end were just wonderful. The notes seemed to jump out of the guitar while still portraying the distinct Gibson thud every time my pick hit the strings.

Considering I was in the NICE acoustic room, I was scared to look at the price. It was brand new, on clearance for $1,599. I had to have it, and I was willing to do many questionable things. I left the store, brought back 2 acoustic guitars to trade in, and it came home with me.

And again, 7 years later I have yet to find another guitar I enjoy playing more. I've played multiple various more expensive Gibsons (J-45s, J-200s, J-185s, Hummingbirds, Doves) Taylors, and Martins that all sounded very good. The closest I got was a Taylor 614ce that sounded very different.

Nice! That doesn't surprise me. I remember playing a vintage Dove at another local guitar store while I was trading in gear. Bright but not shrill, with sufficient bottom end unlike the Hummingbird next to it. Beautiful sound AND looks!

As you said, Bozeman Made Gibson’s are idiosyncratic- some just flat and listless and always less distinctive sounding than Taylors (brighter) and Martins (louder) in the dreaded carpeted sound rooms of the shop. But find the right one and wholla, the mystery of the slope shoulders, short scale boxiness is unleashed: Dylan, Townes, Lucinda, Jackson. My 2001 j45 standard and my j15 have written and recorded a lotta tunes. Enjoy.

Nice! Shortly after I bought my J-15, I helped an Army medic who had just graduated from AIT pick out his first real acoustic, and the one you mentioned (with walnut b&s) was the one he chose!

My experience was also that they are very different guitars despite the spec sheet. The J-45 Studio felt comfortable due its more compact build and was much brighter-sounding with very little low end.

Thank you! They definitely share multiple tonal characteristics, especially that signature Gibson thud and low sustain. I found it more focused and midrangey than every J-45 I played, which I prefer. It's like a J-45 and a Martin D-28 had a baby!

Go for that Les Paul Jr. if you can! Life is short.

I played an ovation celebrity for 25 years.

As of three months ago, I now own a Martin D18.

Just an unbelievably massive leap in sound and feel. I’m flabbergasted every time I play a note on the D18 it just rings like a bell.

It’s light, has incredibly smooth bass tone, bright highs, and the mids almost sound like they’re being run thru some kind of light chorus or saturation.

It feels perfect for my bone structure, I can’t stop playing it.

I didn’t think I could ever love a guitar so much but I can’t stop playing it it makes me so happy.

Martin D35. My parents gifted it to me when I graduated college. I’ll never part ways with it.

My mom has passed away and she was always so proud that I finished college (she never got a degree), and that she was able to gift me something like a Martin acoustic guitar. She always encouraged me to make music and valued having quality things. So her gifting me my Martin as a graduation gift really represented her and her values and what she saw in me. I always think about her when I play it.

It doesn’t hurt that it sounds amazing, looks amazing, and always feelings inspiring to play.

Buying my first premium acoustic, what would you do??

Posted by Jeveez · in r/AcousticGuitar · 4 days ago

Hi all,
I have a dilemma for you today: I want to buy my first (and only, I think, let's see what the future brings) expensive acoustic guitar. What would you do?

A bit of context: I've played guitar since I was a kid, learning chords from my dad. Then I studied classical guitar for a few years in middle and highschool. Think Sor, Paganini, Tarrega, Bach.

15 years later, I ventured a bit in electric and acoustic, but I play only occasionally (even rarely I'd say) and for my own amusement at home. Skills have gone down but I want music and guitar to stay in my life. I find acoustic fingerstyle to be my favorite gendre to play these days, though I'm not that good at it, and I play it on a cheap 300$ Dreadnought. I also strum and occasionally learn new random songs that catch my ear.

Now the point: I decided to buy a very nice acoustic guitar. Not because I "need" it but because I want the few times that I play to be special. Even if for just a few notes here and there. And with a nicer guitar I might end up playing more :)

The dilemma: I don't know how to choosee there are so many great guitars, so many wood choices, all with their distinctive chatacter! I have narrowed it down a little but not so much

  • Martin OM28, 000-28 and the 18 versions. Great guitars, I like the neck width, but I don't find them to be easiest/fastest necks to play (if compared to the others here below), great "old" sound, I can't decide between rosewood and mahogany. I'd probably go with rosewood. And I'm a bit partial because of Clapton, Mayer, etc. As Martin is more expensive than the others here (I'm in Europe), I'd might go second hand if I choose one of these
  • Taylor 514 or 814 - loove the smoothnes of the neck. I found the ones I tried a bit narrow though, coming from classical guitar. Sound really different from Martin, more metallic/high pitched? It's just different i like them both! And the Grand Auditorium shape is lovely
  • Larrivee: I tried a GA and really liked it, found it even more "metallic" than the Taylors (might have been the strings) but more balanced, good playability
  • Furch Yellow Deluxe GA: this is a great guitar. Cheaper and less "heritage" maybe but it sounds good. Taylor-like I'd say

Now, how can one choose?? What would you do in my shoes and why? You can only pick one.

Thank you very much for your wisdom!

I am on the hunt as well for a nicer guitar for fingerstyle and man it is overwhelming. There are so many good choices. I understand why some people have so many guitars.

I made some progress yesterday though when I found a guitar center with good variety and two closed off rooms where I could play higher priced guitars without the distractions of a normal guitar center.

I would recommend doing the same to find what sounds best to your ear and feels the best to play. I would also suggest not completely writing off Taylors because they are too bright or Martins because they are too warm etc. I have found that I really like the warmer Taylors and essentially most Martins. I do not prefer the super bright Taylors.

Here are the guitars I really liked from yesterday when I played hooky from work for an hour.

Gibson L-00 ($3k) - warm, woody, it felt like a shorter scale length so it was easier to grab frets

Alvarez laureate LF7OE ($1.5k) - wonderful for the price and sounded “special.” A full sound with sparkly highs and pronounced lows but not overly scooped mids like some Taylors

Taylor 724ce koa ($4k) just wonderful - my favorite. I should have bought it on the spot

Taylor 424ce spl ed ga ae ($3.3k) also very lovely - my second favorite after the 724

I also played some lower level martins 000-16 street master (warm and woody less sustain) and SC-13E (brighter than the street master and well rounded) were between $1.5-2k and also lovely

Go and play as many guitars as you can, take your time, and buy the exact guitar you played in the store. High end acoustics are all one of a kind. There's no rush.

Also, have others play the guitar facing you so you can hear it.

When you find it, you'll know!

Yup.

I literally just bought one and have been looking for a long while. Made a special trip to a shop that had tons of high end builder guitars (bedell, bourgeois, huss & Dalton). I played about 15 guitars and of the top 5 I had on my list going in, none of them did it for me. And these were gorgeous >$6k guitars.

I walked out with a simple (by comparison) Gallagher bluegrass bell. The second I started playing it, I just knew i wanted to keep playing it. That didn't stop me from playing 5 more after it, but I came back to it at the end and confirmed  it was special.

Side story - they don't carry Martin and were adamant about it. The owner said Martin put overwhelming demands on another local shop that specialized in the Martin brand and it ended up being the thing that broke them. So he wouldn't even consider it.

Yes, absolutely. Every piece of wood is different, and every guitar will be, too. You might not know why a specific guitar sounds better than the others, and that's fine!

Example, I really wanted an HD28 about 20 years ago, but I played a D16RGT that just totally blew me away and sounded better (to me, because no one else's opinion matters) than any of the HD28s I'd played. For whatever reason, that guitar had the sound and feel I wanted. I havent played a D16RGT that sounds like mine, ever. I still love that guitar!

If you have any budget at all, go second hand. You get way more for your money.

If I'm going to pick one, I'm picking 000-18 if I play mostly with fingers, or OM-18 if I play mostly with a pick. If you're going 000, get the 000-18. The 000-28 has heavier bracing than the other three, which tend to be livelier guitars than the 000-28.

Particularly, I want a 000-18 from 2014 or later, or an OM-18 from 2018 or later, which was when they (respectively) got upgraded bracing, wider nut width, faster and more modern neck (MLO profile), etc. I would also like a 000-18V or OM-18V on the used market (same specs, but older model years and they have thicker vintage-style necks), or a used 000-18 Golden Era (GE) or OM-18 GE (pricier but even better). The new 2025+ models are also solid choices, evolving further from the 2014/2018 redesigns but in a positive direction, IMO.

Signature guitars are fine if you really like the artist and are cool with that, but personally, I'm not a fan of Eric "Keep Britain white" Clapton and John "My dick is sort of like a white supremacist" Mayer but some people can separate the art from the artist and all that.

Ultimately, which one you get REALLY depends on the individual guitar, as there is considerable variation in the sound of different copies of the same model due to the natural properties of wood. You might find a ho-hum 000-18GE selling for $4000 and a mindblowing 000-18 standard from the 1990s selling for less than half that -- odds are not likely, usually I'm placing my bets on a GE > 2018+ > pre-2018 but it definitely can go the other way. It's all probabilities, not certainties.

Taylors are nice but I would highly recommend a used 2017 and earlier with X bracing instead of the new V-braced models. To me, 2014-2017 is one of the best eras for these. In general, Taylors have more apparent treble or "shimmer" which is partly due to the heavier bracing overall => less top movement => less bass.

Larrivees are nice, two bracing systems, one more Taylor-esque, one more Martin/Gibson-esque. Haven't had much experience with Furch; they will likely be cheaper in Europe than American brands are, but they have a great reputation.

Update! So I tried those 000-18, OM-18 and OM-35. I found the 35 to be too "stiff" for how I play with my fingers, great sound though. The more I think about that 2018 OM-18 the more I like it. It's the one of the bunch I played the most by far. Veery easy to play, great attack and single notes separation. And a lovely sound of course. Apparently I'm a mahogany guy :) But it was set with an extremely low action so the moment I used a pick or dropped to D it started buzzing.

A couple of "second-hand market" questions, if you have an opinion: that OM-18 is "pick-up ready", with the black plastic thingy at the bottom and everything, but doesn't have a pick-up. Does it mean that it was removed? Second question, among all those guitars, the OM-18 was the only one without the accompanying Martin paper label (the label with model name and a bunch of numbers and barcodes on it): how much should the price be affected by this, if at all? Thank you again!

Personally I'd go for a Martin standard. But that's... personal. Get out and play as many as you can and buy the one that speaks to you.

Go to a vintage guitar shop and play a bunch of different guitars & see what you like.

You didn't mention Gibsons. I have a '49 LG-2 that is incredible. Gibsons have a rounder, more "golden" tone. Not as bold and cutting as Martins.

I went on a 2 year quest for a high end acoustic. Played hundreds of guitars. Bought and returned 2 different guitars. Went to a “mom and pop” music shop that had used guitars on consignment. I picked up a used 1997 Martin D-28, played 3 chords, bought it immediately. I just knew. My friend who was with me heard that guitar and also knew it was the one.

The best way to find “the one” is to play a lot of them. When you know, you know.

Same here - went out shopping for a specific brand/model, but the guy I was with (a serious bluegrass flatpicker) who was NOT looking for a guitar picked one up that I never would have picked up myself, played around with it and said "Dad gum! If you don't get this one, I will!"

Like you said, this one was clearly touched by god, I fell in love and bought it. Still magical today.

Happy ending: he ordered one same day, picked it up the next week, and he loves his even more than this one - we both still have em 27 years later

Edit: this is a 1998 Guild D30bld. I went out looking for a Martin D-28 or D-35.

The bld means "blonde," they had flame maple sides, a 1 piece arched flame maple back (!), and a 3 piece flame maple neck. As a result of being 90% rock hard maple, it's been an impressively durable guitar. Here's one on Reverb just like it.

I worked in a guitar shop for like 15 years. I've played pretty much every guitar you can think of, and there is ONE that sticks out as the best sounding I've ever played and I regret not buying it.

It comes with a little back story that's very important. So back when Fender acquired Guild guitars back in the mid 90s, they continued to have Guild make guitars and just do their thing. Guild was making decent enough guitars in their Rhode Island shop, and when Fender moved them to Corona they were also fine, not bad, not amazing. But around 2008 or 2009, Fender bought Ovation. Fender also brought in a fella by the name of Ren Ferguson who had done a lot of work developing Gibson's acoustic line. (I believe he's still very much involved with Guild) Fender had the plan to take the factory in Connecticut where Ovation had been, and move Guild's US manufacturing to there. They also let Wren loose, and had him oversee an entirely revamped Guild US line. Somewhere in the early 2010s (ish) they came out with their first run of US Guilds from the Connecticut factory.

I was at work, unboxing a shipment of new Guild acoustic that our reps had been hyping up to us. We got a few dozen of them in, and in the corner of the store where our little work bench was for tuning and setting guitars up, my co-worker picked the first one up and strummed a G Chord on it. Every. Single. Person. In the store stopped and stared in the direction of the sound they had just heard. Employees, customers; everyone just stopped and looked in amazement because of the sound that had come from that guitar. I played it for a bit as well, and it just sang. Even standing up, holding the guitar tight against my body (usually suffocates the sound) it was resonating into my chest. Just an earthy, balanced, full but not honky, bright but not piercing sound. Perfectly even across the entire fingerboard, no dead spots, no wolfs in the sound, just as close to perfection as a guitar can get.

If I remember right it was a D-55. It was incredible. Every single one of those guitars in that run sounded like gifts from the heavens haha. But that particular D-55 was magic. It sold before we could even get a price tag on it, one of the customers who had been talking with us while we all drooled over it literally just said "Is that for sale? If it is, I'd like to buy it." That first run of those Connecticut Guilds were magic. Never heard such consistency, or such a perfect sound from a line of guitars before or since. And for reference we were a full line Martin, Gibson and Taylor dealer as well, and 3 blocks down the road was a full on boutique acoustic guitar shop that specialized in the highest of high end acoustics. We even called them and had some of those guys come in and try out the Guilds we got.

We continued selling those guitars for a while, but the subsequent runs never really lived up to that first run we got. Maybe we all kept hyping it up in our minds, maybe not. Either way, it was the best sounding guitar I'd ever heard, or got a chance to play. Then when Fender sold Guild, they moved their initial Fender branded US acoustics to that shop, but they were never quite as good either. Probably because Ren left with Guild.

At a Guitar Center near me they have FIVE Fender TPD-2, which is basically a D-50 from New Hartford with less bling and a Fender headstock. On account of the headstock, not only have they not been snatched up but they aren't even going for that much. They need quite a setup - apparently they were in a collection and you can tell because of the bowing necks that they weren't handled that much- but otherwise basically just win against anything else in that acoustic room.

Makes me miss playing dreadnoughts, honestly

Reminds me of Tacoma Guitars before Fender bought them. I would play a bunch of them at an American Music store in Tacoma, near the Mall (now it’s a sushi restaurant). The guitars were not perfect, they were very rough finished, and they were fairly cheap…but some of them just sang beautifully. Then…they were gone. I don’t even remember the models, but the guitars had a unique tone to them.

Haha, I worked at American Music in Seattle!

Tacoma were great, you know the problem they had though, they could not get finish to stick to the guitars in that factory. For every like 10 guitars they made, 3 or 4 of them would need to be refinished multiple times. Fender's initial plan with Tacoma guitars was to have them built in the Connecticut factory, but for one reason or another it never really panned out. I didn't get the dirty details on that situation though haha.

Yamaha FG-5. Best guitar at that price point by far. I was blown away by the quality when I first played it.

I have an FS5 and I played it next to Martin, Taylor, Iris, Eastman etc, I was willing to spend twice as much but that Yamaha is just IT. I love that guitar and play it every day, never letting that one go.

Second this. I just bought one last week and it kicks ass.

I know many guitars are technically better and many will have more ornate finishing. But damn absolutely nothing beats the FG5 at its price.

Solid top/sides, Japanese-made, bone nut/saddle. And it just sounds awesome.

For the curious, I was cross shopping this against the Martin D-16, Martin D-15M, and the Taylor 314ce studio. I think the FG5 sounded better than all of them and cost $500-$800 less.

[Question] what is the best acoustic guitar a newbie like me could buy in a budget of $300-$500?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/Guitar · 1 year ago

I'm making the jump from trying to learn classical guitar ( it broke) into buying myself an acoustic guitar. I'm a completely amateur trying to teach myself play, admittedly I have no idea what to look for when buying an acoustic guitar. Would anyone care to point me in a general direction or have any personal suggestions? Thank you in advance!

To the point where I prefer the feel of their acoustic guitars over much more expensive ones. A few years ago I bought myself a CSF3m as a couch guitar, and liked it so much that I sold my Martin worth 5-6 times what the Yamaha is.

Also probably the best value in a bass for hobby recording type stuff. We have Yamaha golf carts at our country club and I never noticed that their logo is still a tuning fork, even though they make pretty much everything now.

I got the cheapest possible Yamaha bass shipped and the build quality, action, everything was literally perfect out of the box. Only thing I had to do was change the strings, which is a massive difference from my jazzmaster which I have to fiddle with once a month to keep playing properly

Yamaha FGX800C is almost impossible to beat in that price range. The build quality is utterly unbeatable and the neck is the best I’ve felt for less than a grand. Check out the reviews.

Seconding Yamaha. Just absolutely the best quality control at that price point. I had a Yamaha semi hollow that I did NOT treat well for like eight years and it never needed a setup. Their Keith Urban starter pack is great too for building confidence if you're not that strong yet, I have a ~8 year old student who definitely doesn't practice much but can still fully express chords.

For steel string finger picking, Tommy Emmanuel. For classical maybe John Williams. For flamenco it would probably be Tomatito or Gerardo Nunez. For Romani jazz, Stochelo Rosenberg. Check them out. Al DeMeola is wicked good at what he does. Yamandu Costa is a virtuoso of the nylon 7 string.

There doesnt exist a best guitar player.

There comes a point when you reach a certin skillevel where you can "play everything". What differentiate you at that point is the music you play and write. Your own style. And from there on its just a matter of opinion.

I could argue that Syu and Turilli are the best metal guitarist, but you can find many people that can play all their songs. But none that can write their music and none that can "invent" their style they have developed.

Living? Tommy Emmanuel comes to mind. Bireli Lagrene and Stochelo Rosenberg (Gypsy Jazz masters) come to mind. Julian Lage (not primarily an acoustic player, but absolutely sick when he picks one up) comes to mind.

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Acoustic Guitar

  1. Body Type:

    • Dreadnought: Offers a loud, powerful sound; great for strumming.
    • Concert and Grand Concert: Smaller body, more comfortable to play, and good for fingerstyle.
    • Jumbo: Produces a deep, resonant tone; ideal for volume and projection.
  2. Tonewoods:

    • Top Wood: Spruce (bright, clear sound) vs. Cedar (warmer, mellower tone).
    • Back and Sides: Mahogany (warm, soft tone) vs. Rosewood (rich, complex sound).
  3. Playability:

    • Check the neck width and action (string height) for comfort. A lower action is easier to play but may cause buzzing.
  4. Brand Reputation:

    • Brands like Martin, Taylor, and Gibson are known for quality. Yamaha and Fender offer great budget options.
  5. Price Range:

    • Set a budget. Entry-level guitars can start around $200, while high-end models can exceed $3,000.

Recommendations:

  • Best Overall: Taylor 314ce - Known for its excellent playability, rich tone, and beautiful craftsmanship. It features a solid Sitka spruce top and layered sapele back and sides.

  • Best Budget Option: Yamaha FG800 - Offers great sound quality and build at an affordable price, making it perfect for beginners.

  • Best for Fingerstyle: Martin 000-15M - A smaller body with a warm, balanced tone, ideal for fingerstyle players.

Choosing the right acoustic guitar ultimately depends on your playing style and preferences, so it's a good idea to try a few models in-store if possible!
