TL;DR: There is no one-size-fits-all "best" guitar, as preferences vary widely based on style, sound, and personal taste. However, some standout models include the Richie Kotzen Signature Telecaster, Tokai LS364, and Jackson Virtuoso HT.
High-End and Custom Guitars
For those seeking high-end or custom guitars, brands like Skervesen, Meinzinger, and Aristides are frequently mentioned for their exceptional build quality and artistry [1:5],
[1:9]. These brands offer unique designs and superior craftsmanship, often appealing to players who want something distinctive and tailored to their specifications.
Japanese-Made Guitars
Japanese-made guitars such as the Tokai LS364 are highly praised for their quality and sound. Users have noted that these guitars rival or even surpass more traditional Western brands in terms of playability and tone [2:1],
[2:3]. The Tokai LS364, in particular, has been highlighted as an outstanding Les Paul-style guitar with a phenomenal PAF tone
[2:2].
Signature Models
Signature models like the Richie Kotzen Signature Telecaster are also recommended for their unique features and excellent playability. This particular model is noted for its comfortable neck and impressive performance when paired with effects like the Behringer Centaur Pedal [4]. Despite concerns about the neck size, users with medium-sized hands have found it manageable and enjoyable
[4:2],
[4:4].
Guitars for Speed and Precision
For players focused on speed and precision, the Jackson Virtuoso HT is described as a top-tier instrument with a fast, comfortable neck and robust build quality [3]. Its ebony fretboard and sturdy construction make it a favorite among those who value both aesthetics and functionality
[3:2].
Personal Preferences and Humor
Ultimately, the best guitar is subjective and depends heavily on personal preference. Some discussions humorously suggest that the best guitar is the one that gets you noticed or fits your personality [5:4]. Whether it's a classic model like a Gibson Les Paul or a quirky option like a Flying V, the right guitar is the one that resonates with you both musically and personally.
I agree with this. I saw a multi-scale 7 string evertune that they made in this dark emerald color and I would stab my firstborn in the heart with full eye contact to own one but alas I am a peasant
Yep. Anyone that has spent time with an Aristides would say the same thing. They really are a cut above anything else you can buy.
I had a valravn 7 string. Unfortunately the travel from Ukraine, messed up the truss rod... It was a amazing guitar, the dirtthaller pickups were awesome too. I ended up with a nice schecter, but I'm going to gravitate towards a baritone 6 string I think, now.
An Ibanez M80M. Yeah, that’s an 8 string. Just do it. You know you want to.
If only it had a neck pickup
I have no need for a neck pickup!! Lol
Blasphemy!
Coincidentally, there's someone selling one with Fluence Moderns over on Reverb: https://reverb.com/item/92277827-ibanez-m80m-wk-meshuggah-signature-8-string-w-upgrades-fishman
Skervesen or Meinzinger Guitars. Meinzingers are absolute works of art
Wow what is that? That looks freaking amazing & the finish is sick! Not sure what the best of the best is but that guitar looks like it’s up there! I honestly I couldn’t pick a favorite guitar because there are too many that I love.
It's a brand called Valvarn that I follow on Instagram, I've never played one but they have some wild looking builds and stunning tops and fretboards IMO. I would love to own one someday
They built me a custom 7 string a couple years back. The build quality is outstanding and relatively cheap for a full custom shop guitar.
I second this. Specifically my aristides
After years of playing guitar and searching for the ones that both sound and play the best, I’ve ended up with these two and they’re awesome.
The left is a Tokai LS364 I ordered from a music store in Japan last year and it’s the best Les Paul style I’ve ever played.
The right is my partscaster that I put together last year as well. All nitro finish. Body from Guitar Mill, neck is Allparts from an eBay seller, and hardware is Gotoh relic series. It’s the best strat ive ever played and I used to own an American Vintage II ‘61 that just sucked.
I just sold my Tokai and I kind of regret it, it was one of the mid higher end ones from 2007 and it was PHENOMENAL and had the best PAF tone I’ve ever heard. I’m not much of an LP guy but it was amongst the best I’ve played
Yeah I don’t think I’ve ever heard a bad thing about Japanese made Tokais, or really any Japanese made LP style guitars for that matter. I’m planning on keeping this one forever!
I just built a sea foam Strat that looks just like that!!!! Nice work.
Nice! Seafoam green is such a nice colour for a strat. I love the way seafoam green looks on mine with everything being lightly aged and kind of vintage tinted. Got any pics of yours?
Not sure if its a perspective thing but that strat looks fucking massive lol
Yeah I kinda saw that when I was looking at the photo. I think it’s the angle of the camera, the tilted angle of the guitar, and it being closer to the camera that makes it look like that.
Very nice
Thanks! Probably spent way too much money but it’s worth it haha
It's always too much man but it's also ALWAYS worth it!
Those higher end Japanese guitar are so good. I was never a Les Paul guy until I found an '82 Greco Les Paul that just blew me away.
After having played many instruments for many years, this one is by far my holy grail.
Plays everything perfectly. Super fast and comfy. Roars when overdriven. Build is sturdy with immaculate attention to detail. Lastly, the price is fair for a new US make in 2025.
Cannot recommend it more. It’s a top tier instrument in my book.
Love the neck on this guitar. I’m a die-hard fan of ebony fretboards. This streaked/striped ebony is fantastic. And it’s a 5 piece neck. Double cool. I wish there was a GuitarNeckPorn subreddit. I just got an insane neck last week. I don’t even have a plan for it. I saw it and decided I couldn’t let anybody else have it. I have enough necks sitting around to build a beaver dam.
I just wish they’d bind the neck and the body too. I’m a slut for binding
These are kind of harkening back to the USA Custom Shop Student models of the 80’s where they were more of a workhorse guitar with less of the aesthetic flashes (although they do use real MOP on the inlays). The frets are installed in a different way however on the American Series, so the tang is never exposed to the edge of the fretboard. That gives you the playability benefit of the binding.
Love it bro way to go congratulations on a wonderful choice
Thank you:) much appreciated
Looks like a Robin Medley!
Very nice guitar. Gotta love Jackson/Charvel guitars
2023 Richie Kotzen Signature Telecaster. Easily the best guitar I've ever played. Picked up for $1200USD. Running it through a Behringer Centaur Pedal really makes it shine.
I have one as well! Love it! How do you feel about that boat of a neck?
I don't have huge hands so I was a bit concerned - but it feels great. I dig it!
Yea! That was my concern as well! I’m firmly in the medium sized hands department so I put off getting one for years. Finally bit the bullet after realizing it was similar to my Les Paul and couldn’t be happier!
Really nice!!! Jealous!
Damn, that looks amazing!
🔥🔥🔥
Cool looking guitar. Something about this picture makes me feel like you are sneaking around the corner to look at it ha ha
What kind of guitar is best? I like Squire and Harmony. Oh, and the flying v is good.
Lead guitar. They named it that for Lead Zeppelin.
The Gibbons More Paul. Why would you want less? Like Yangwing Rammstein says “Less is not more, more is more”
They stopped making Morpauls when Kennedy got shot and CBS decided to quit TV and just make guitars
Whichever gets you laid. Sadly I haven’t found the right one yet. Next one though.
You need an accoustic guitar and play wonderwall on it
i think a pretty good bit would be guy who brings acoustic guitar to the beach or campfire with friends but only plays heaven and hell by black sabbath
What do you think the soundhole is for?
Have you tried a Warlock?
I've been using it wrong also apparently.
Bass guitar
Went on a birthday trip with my friends to Nashville and stayed the night next morning I dragged them into guitar with my mind set on buying a Alex lifeson signature godin because rush is the best band of all time in my opinion and I wanted a guitar that my favorite guitarist plays but I put my hands on it and the frets were sharp as shit and for four thousand dollars those frets better be smooth but before I left I saw this Paul Gilbert pgm on the high rack and had to play it I always liked Mr big after my dad showing me the song addicted to that rush and the crazy guitar in the opening with the bass matching it lets just say I'm amazed the frets weren't sharp the dimarzios sound amazing and gotoh locking tuners its all I could want
Awesome guitar, happy birthday.
And yes, he is an incredible player and a humble guy.
Congrats and happy birthday!!! I am 99 percent sure I played this exact guitar. Did you get it at the Nashville Guitar Center?
Yes I got it there
Too cool. Yes, I played it. Great guitar man!
What’s the point of the painted on F holes? Is it chambered?
No its just what Paul wanted its been that way since the late 80s I belive
Oh gotcha. Does it have the magnet to hold a slide like?
Paul wanted a specialized guitar for his signature and didn't want another hot rodded looking guitar like everyone else had. Like a bright neon RG. He went with the Fholes to stand apart from everyone else. A lot of his image and style he said was being able to play clean to appease the grampas, so making it look like a violin probably aided in his design as a sophisticated axe.
Interesting! Thanks for the answer, idk why I was being downvoted I was just curious
I also have an RGD71ALMS and the difference in terms of quality and playability is absolutely massive. Even I didn’t expect this much to be honest, the RGD already is an amazing guitar. It’s both my first 8 string and first prestige guitar and everything about this is insane. The tone, the feel, the build quality, the LOOKS, EVERYTHING. And thanks to the original owner for taking such good care of her, literally no scratches or whatsoever for 18 years.
The greatest 8 string neck ever made. Those things play so well. And Galaxy Black is a sick finish.
10000% despite it being the first really commercially available 8 string back in like 2008? still the best neck even to this day
Opinions vary. But I agree that it is an AMAZING guitar and value. The best 8 string I’ve played to day was a boden 8. I don’t renderer the series or any specs. But it was the most comfy 8 I ever held. I left the shop to go to the bank and literally it was sold in that time.
I love mine, I’m not an 8 string player but I just wanted one for the history it represents. It’s just a great guitar full stop. I got a set of Tosin Fishmans in mine set up for v1 and v3, plus Ghoto Locking tuners. It’s still in excellent condition too.
The title is extremely subjective but still it doesn't change the fact that it's an excellent guitar. I have 6 other electric guitars and this one not only has the best riff potential and clarity but the best lead tone too.
Slightly regret selling mine. Life bestowed me with really small hands, and I just couldn't keep dealing with the pain I was experiencing. I definitely max out at a 7 string.
Well as I said I’ve never owned an 8 string guitar before and only two 7 strings but can tell that this thing is massive. Maybe there are more comfortable 8 string guitars out there that could work with smaller hands? I would personally never sell this beauty, it’s been less than a couple of hours but I already know that this is the perfect guitar for me.
I'm pretty sure Ibanez offers one of the tightest string spacings available for an 8 string, so this is probably as good as it gets. Ibanez neck profiles do have pretty abrupt shoulders which can contribute to being uncomfortable, but for me it was the sheer width of the fretboard that was problematic. I'm not sure there's something out there that would be comfortable for me.
the abasi 8 string models feel like 7 string necks (well not exactly but def compared to my rg2228). I personally don’t like the narrower string spacing they used to achieve that but it may be something worth exploring if you find the Ibanez to be too much
Btw congrats on a killer pair of extended range guitars
thanks dude, it feels like an entirely different world to play guitars like these and I’m incredibly satisfied with my choices so far. My next goal is either an Ibanez Prestige RGD2127Z or a Schecter Hellraiser C-7FR (the red one).
My friend has a Hellraiser in the same color as you’re thinking of, he really loves it. I feel very biased towards Ibanez since that’s my main guitar, but I don’t really like the schecter mainly because of the glossy neck and trem system
Is the Armstrong real or a copy? I’m curious how it feels/plays compared to your other traditional guitars.
u/dnnmt is correct. this is a replica made by a luthier in Canada. I'm not the first owner. It's heavy as s#!t and the body doesn't have any real resonance; tone is reliant on amp and effects. I tend to play it only when I'm in a drone-y or shoegaze-y mood.
Amazing. What is the name of the luthier? I'd love to get one someday that is more accurate to the original than the Chinese ebay ones.
There was only one Dan Armstrong left handed ever made (original), which is owned by Sir Paul McCartney. Getting any kind of left-handed version is really hard though (I've tried). Really sweet guitar OP.
I'm curious too. Is it a 1970's/1980's MIJ copy a la Electra, etc? Or one of the recent Chinese copies? All the Chinese ones I've seen don't have the double strap positions. I've also never seen an MIJ lefty.
I think there are univox copies too I think but not sure how many lefty versions would have been made.
What if you wanna play with no pants on..everyone will see
Love the tone wood on that first one. Really impacts the tone. 😉
Yea probably. Nice!
I think I’m in love 💋
Awesome
We all know the answer - the best guitar is the one you love playing the most. Period. That's it.
No need to take a cheap dig at a guitar that doesn't do it for you. No need to take a dig at a guitar that doesn't "feel" right for you. No need to slam a guitar because it is too bright/warm for you liking. No need to tell a new player to stay away from a guitar because you don't like it. No need to piss on someone's parade because they like a guitar you don't.
Love your guitar without having to take cheap digs at another.
Or do whatever gets you through the day.
Newbies - whatever guitar feels right to you is the best guitar for you. The one that feels right when you hold it. The one whose sound you like. The one that sits nice and snug in your arms. Don't worry what others are going to say - you play it, you love it.
And if your new every guitar you play sounds like shit lol
It's not always about what sounds great. I bought a guitar early on that just "felt" right and have never regretted that decision. Took years to justify it from a skills perspective but it is the one guitar that has outlasted every other guitar I have ever bought - a Taylor 814ce. I was less than a year into playing and I am not naturally talented. But I do get your point on sound.
Then send it back. Most (civilised) countries have distance selling regulations allowing you to return an item (Undamaged) with no penalty.
Of course, knowing it’s not the guitar for you for a beginner is the hard part.
I actually have a Luna guitar, it's not the most respected brand but it sounds great and I play it nearly everyday
Boom! And that is the perfect guitar for you.
are you the guy at my local weekly open mic who pours coke into a half-finished jar of peanut butter and then drinks it and then plays instrumentals for 8 minutes?
I wrote a lot of songs and did my most "productive" output on a dinged up cheap 3/4 size yamaha classical guitar meant for child learners that I bought on marketplace for $30 bucks.
Felt decent and sounded not too bad so let that be a lesson!
Exactly!!! My first one was one of the first ever First Acts and I loved it. Had it set up and eventually gave it to a kid who started out.
…one that has new strings and is in tune
After playing a GS Mini in person, despite so many people getting that as their first guitar, I really don’t think I could recommend one.
Also lefties. Most stores have one at most. Nothing's as lonely as being a left-handed guitar player at Guitar Center.
"The best guitar" changes quite often....at least for me....after 46+ years I have gone through multiple cycles of genre with the current being Country; therefore a telecaster is the best...
IMO you must have x of guitars to cover each chapter of your voyage of guitar playing. One piece of advice is hang onto your "favorite" gear unless you have to get rid of it.....you will regret getting rid of gear you love.....
I’m looking into getting a guitar - I have never played before, and really this is my first time stepping into the guitar world. I spent the last few days watching videos on what the best beginner guitar to buy is and listening to what the guitars sound like. The videos i had watched mainly were Fenders (and honestly i did not like the sound of them, however that could’ve just been because of the tune the guy was playing was not my style, and maybe because of the pickup selector mode I suppose.)
I checked out cheapest guitars that were listed on the official Fender website (Squier Sonic ___ for $199.99) and I decided that I liked the sound of the squier sonic stratocaster. I told my dad about my findings, and after a little talking he told me to look at Ibanez guitar prices, as he thinks that if we were to buy a guitar then we might as well buy one that’s pricey but really good quality, which I totally get. I tried looking at Ibanez and was pretty overwhelmed with the hundreds of guitars there were that didn’t even show the prices on the main site (though I could’ve just skipped over it). I went to watch videos about Ibanez and the few I saw that reviewed their guitars left me feeling somewhat negatively about the brand.
Just for insight; i have really been into indie rock bands lately, but in general I like a variety of genres and would like to have a guitar that’s versatile. What guitars would you all recommend, along with good amps?
The correct answer is always 000-18, but if you’re looking for a good quality beginner guitar, either electric or acoustic- you should look at a Yamaha.
The solid top acoustic Yamahas are brilliant beginner instruments. They are affordable, sound great, and play easily.
The Yamaha Pacifica is a wonderful beginner electric. It’s what I bought when my kids showed an interest in learning guitar.
Either of these will be sufficient for years, and you’ll likely want to keep them forever.
I own a Pacifica. I have had it for years now. I love this guitar. I decided to install Seymour Duncan pickups and a bone nut. Plays even better now.
I have never played a bad G&L
marissa from screaming females is a g&l devotee and that’s more than enough vouch for me
Yamaha. I’ve always felt that they have the highest standards for their entry level guitars
Yamaha Music is an oddity because they’re supported by huge corporate money, so they can invest in quality, R&D and many other stuff that other brands can’t afford as easily.
They are also considered good manufactures of pianos, saxophones, most brass, and many other things. They are a top small motor maker. If you can trust them with internal combustion, you can most likely trust them with making a many other things.
I’d find some middle range guitar. Something 4-600 roughly. It’s the perfect middle ground for price and quality.
You need to go to the store, find a solid basic guitar, buy it, and play the crap out of it for 6 months or a year. If after that you are still playing, you'll have an idea of what you're looking for in your next guitar.
Solid basic can be a Squier, or an Ibanez, or whatever.
Follow-up: Here's what you DON'T do. Don't buy an expensive guitar. You'll be afraid to drop it, and the last thing you want is to be uncomfortable playing. Also, if you don't keep playing after 6-12 months, you'll have an expensive guitar that has lost a lot of its value (resale on electric guitars is ... not good, to put it lightly).
My first guitar was a Peavey Patriot, second-hand, that someone had put bright pink Dimarzio's in. The year was 1988, and it was probably already more than a few years old at that point. It had nicks and chips and I loved it to death. Probably should have kept it, now that I'm thinking about it. SIGH. But my point is it was NOT a good guitar.
thanks man, i needed to hear that
