What Redditors are Saying

Best Electric Guitar

TL;DR

  • Consider your budget and playing style.
  • Popular beginner options include Yamaha Pacifica and Newen guitars.
  • For advanced players, consider the specific sound and features you desire.

Budget Considerations

When choosing an electric guitar, your budget plays a significant role. For beginners with a limited budget, some users suggest saving up to ensure you can purchase both a quality guitar and an amplifier [4:6]. However, others argue that for starting out, any guitar will suffice as long as it gets you playing and learning [4:5].

Popular Beginner Options

The Yamaha Pacifica is frequently recommended for beginners due to its versatility and affordability [4:4], [4:7]. Another suggestion is Newen guitars, an Argentinean brand known for offering good value for money [4:2]. These guitars are suitable for various music styles, and trying them out at a store can help you determine if they fit your preferences.

Playing Style and Pickup Configuration

Your preferred music genre can influence the type of electric guitar you should choose. Different pickup configurations, such as single coil or humbucker (HH, HSS), offer distinct sound qualities suited for genres like metal, blues, or rock [4:1]. It's important to consider what kind of music you want to play when selecting a guitar.

Advanced Player Considerations

For more experienced players, the choice of guitar may depend on specific features or the unique sound you're aiming for. Some players might prioritize guitars that excel in certain techniques, such as those that utilize the whammy bar effectively [3:5]. In this case, exploring brands and models that cater to your technical needs is advisable.

In summary, whether you're a beginner or an advanced player, understanding your budget, playing style, and desired features will guide you in selecting the best electric guitar for your needs.

A lot of surf rock just using it to give chords a little flourish, I like that use. I struggle to think of a recurring riff that uses it well, but the song that comes to mind is Van Halen - Eruption when I think of the whammy bar

My Bloody Valentine - She Found Now is probably my favorite song that heavily uses it

Go for Newen guitars Argentinean brand...............amp is subjective like i love orange20t which i use but my brother likes the Marshall amps. I have not tried the other amps only this two ..... it depends on your playing style and the tone u love u can try out at the guitar store

1 upvotes on reddit
BackgroundMaybe6750 · 2 days ago

I would go against the general advice here; go for it.

For starting out, in fact....it does not matter AT ALL which guitar you get. Slash started with a broken-up classical guitar with a single string, for crying out loud

Get this guitar, go crazy. In an year or two if you wanna get another guitar you can look for the options mentioned by the commentors.

I had a valravn 7 string. Unfortunately the travel from Ukraine, messed up the truss rod... It was a amazing guitar, the dirtthaller pickups were awesome too. I ended up with a nice schecter, but I'm going to gravitate towards a baritone 6 string I think, now.

Can I start learning electric guitar solos on a classical guitar?

Posted by nadav_2002 · in r/guitarlessons · 5 days ago

Hi everyone,

I’m really interested in learning electric guitar, especially getting to the level where I can play solos and focus on lead guitar. The thing is, right now I only have a classical guitar at home. I don’t want to commit to a big expense on an electric guitar just yet, until I know that I can actually make progress and stick with it.

My question is: is it possible to start learning the basics of soloing and lead guitar on a classical guitar? Or would I be developing bad habits and wasting time until I get an electric? My idea is to practice on the classical for now, and if I see that I’m improving and really enjoying it, then I’ll know it’s worth investing in an electric guitar.

Has anyone here tried something similar? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Basically yeah. There’s a few extended techniques that you won’t be able to do, certain bends are kind of tricky but in general you can.

5 upvotes on reddit
NovelAd9875 · 2 days ago

Any bend is tricky with nylon strings.

1 upvotes on reddit
Cataplatonic · 5 days ago

You can but the two problems you'll run into are (i) you won't be able to reach the upper frets and (ii) the bends won't work properly.

10 upvotes on reddit
W
wannabegenius · 5 days ago

you will have to convert all bends to slides.

5 upvotes on reddit
F
FunkIPA · 5 days ago

Yes, yes you can. My first couple guitars were classical guitars.

5 upvotes on reddit
External-Gur2896 · 5 days ago
  1. Most guitar skills are transferable. You can absolutely learn a bunch of relevant skills on classical guitar. But bending is gonna suck ‘cause if you’re using nylon strings they’ll go out of tune quick, and it doesn’t sound as good. So no, you can’t learn electric guitar solos 1:1, but you can definitely still get pretty far with slides, hammer-ons and pull-offs. I also think that chords on a classical guitar are harder than they could be

  2. Theres loads of cheap electrical guitars out there. Also, I think electrics are vastly different to play, with classical guitars having wider necks. If you wanna play pop/rock/blues, get a guitar with a regular neck. I got a classical guitar when I started playing, and it wasn’t worth it, ‘cause I didn’t wanna play classical music. That’s just my take though

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Electric Guitar:

  1. Body Style:

    • Solid Body: Great for versatility and sustain (e.g., Fender Stratocaster, Gibson Les Paul).
    • Hollow Body: Warmer tone, ideal for jazz and blues (e.g., Gibson ES-335).
    • Semi-Hollow Body: Combines features of both solid and hollow (e.g., PRS Hollowbody).
  2. Pickups:

    • Single-Coil: Bright, clear sound; great for rock, blues, and country (e.g., Fender Stratocaster).
    • Humbucker: Fuller, thicker sound; better for high-gain settings (e.g., Gibson Les Paul).
  3. Neck Profile and Scale Length:

    • Choose a neck profile that feels comfortable in your hand (e.g., C-shape, U-shape).
    • Scale length affects playability and tone; common lengths are 24.75" (Gibson) and 25.5" (Fender).
  4. Build Quality:

    • Look for solid construction and quality materials (e.g., mahogany, alder, maple).
    • Check for good fretwork and setup for optimal playability.
  5. Budget:

    • Set a budget range; there are great options from entry-level (under $500) to high-end models ($2000+).

Recommendations:

  • Fender Stratocaster: A versatile choice known for its bright tone and comfort. Great for various genres.
  • Gibson Les Paul: Renowned for its rich, warm sound and sustain, perfect for rock and heavier styles.
  • PRS Custom 24: Offers a blend of features from both Fender and Gibson, known for its playability and tonal versatility.

Takeaway: Your choice should reflect your playing style and genre preferences. If possible, try out different models in-store to find what feels and sounds best for you.
