ORIGINAL POST

Not talking about the big hyped shows - I mean the ones you clicked on with zero expectations, maybe late at night or out of boredom, and they completely surprised you.

For me, it was Patriot on Amazon Prime. Never heard anyone talk about it, but it’s weird, dark, and hilarious in the most unexpected way. Easily one of my favorite hidden gems now.

Curious what hidden or under-the-radar shows caught you off guard in a good way. Let’s make a list of underrated gems!

Agreed! Don't know how I came across it, and I'm so old that new shows generally have a hard time drawing me in, but this one dragged me along from the get-go and I wasn't even kicking and screaming 😉

You're the Worst is my favourite show of all time and I've never showed it to someone without them similarly falling in love with it. I'll never understand how it didn't become a cultural phenomenon. Aya Cash and Chris Geere are generational talents in that series

The whole opening scene where Cary records himself in the bathroom of the plane and how it spreads like wildfire and how he tries to play it off is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I've rewatched that show many times. I love it.

Corporate is much more cynical, so not entirely the same thing. But it is also great.

Check out This Fool on Hulu for occasional cameos by Matt and Jake as essentially their Corporate characters (they co-created and wrote for This Fool, which is a very different show but still pretty good, and found a few chances to put themselves in it where it fit). Or just watch the clip on reddit of the first one.

Andy Richter Controls the Universe is essentially the same show (same creator, same basic premise of people in an office working for a giant unsettling corporation, Jonathan Slavin on both). It's worth checking out if you can find it. Too old and unpopular to be streaming anywhere, but it's probably on youtube and/or the high seas.

My mom binged this a bit back and even though I didn't hear the songs from the show, just around her house, and haven't in months, I can still hum a few. I should give it a watch probably.

The books are great! I’ve read all of them (well, all that have been translated to my language), basically back to back, after watching first season. The show is really great adaptation - faithful to the original books but has enough changes to be surprising even for someone who read the books.

They took it off Hulu, but it’s still available on a few services as (sadly) a pay per view stream. So I’ve been meaning to just buy a physical box set.

It's a great show, but it's fast and reliable release schedule makes it one of the best on TV

There's no waiting 2 years for the next season. Hell, you get a teaser trailer with footage of the next season when one ends

Bosch.

If you want a cop show without the unnecessary love triangles and rambo-like main character, this if the show for you. Each season is one main case with a bunch of mini cases in between.

I wondered why if took so long for somebody to say thing.

Best police procedural in a long time. Titus Welliver is outstanding in the role. The "spin off" on is just as good, same cast more or less. Bosch as a PI works very well, he is the spiritual successor to Sam Spade and Jake Giddes. I really expect somebody to end an episode next season: "Forget it Harry. It's Chinatown."

The Boys and The Expanse are top notch awesome.
Good Omens is v good.
Upload is cute and enjoyable. Reacher started strong and then regressed to the mean; not at all bad - just nothing extraordinary. Edit: a much better version of Reacher is Banshee, on HBOMax - and starring Homelander. And in same vein, Mr. Inbetween (Hulu, Disney+) is also similar but better.

ALSO:

Severance is spectacular.

Ted Lasso is top notch. (I held off watching it for a long time thinking that “oh, it’s popular, and so must be dreck - like reading The Da Vinci Code when everyone was saying what a great book it was. My mistake - Ted Lasso is excellent.)

Bosch is a great cop show based on Michael Connolly’s books.

Mythic Quest is surprisingly good - and each season there is a stand-alone episode that is absolutely amazing.

Heard good things re The Patriot but still in my TBW queue.

Edit: I is idiot. Struck through above recommendations that are actually on Apple+ rather than Amazon.

I analyzed Reddit for the best Amazon Prime Video shows - 380+ titles ranked

Posted by LoneKnight25 · in r/AmazonPrimeVideo · 3 days ago
post image

I pulled reddit comments from 50+ threads where people were asking about or discussing Prime shows/what to watch, then ran sentiment analysis to see which shows consistently get praised vs. which ones get dragged.

At the top result: Expanse absolutely crushed it with a 98/100 score. The boys (96/100) came close second and Bosch and Fallout came right after. Meanwhile, some shows I expected to see higher had more polarizing feedback than I anticipated.

Quick disclaimer: "highest rated on Reddit" doesn't mean "perfect for your specific taste." Your preferred genres, tolerance for slow burns, and whether you're looking for something to binge or savor all matter, but this can be a fun guide to see what Redditors popular sentiment is.

The process:

  • Scraped 50+ Prime Video recommendation threads from r/televisionsuggestions, r/AmazonPrimeVideo, r/television, and other TV subreddits
  • Ran the comments through LLMs (GPT-5 + Gemini 2.5) to identify show mentions and analyze sentiment
  • Scored using a weighted system: 70% based on positive vs. negative mention differential, 30% based on positive-to-total mention ratio
  • Manually cleaned up show title variations (e.g., "TMITHC" → "The Man in the High Castle")

This scoring method prevents shows with high engagement but divisive reviews from ranking too high just because they're talked about frequently.

The attached a screenshot showing the top 40 shows with their scores. The full list of 380+ titles is way too big to post here, but you can find the complete breakdown with all shows and the raw comment data from the Reddit threads at: RedSummary (dot) com/best-prime-shows (or google RedSummary and find the post under "latest"

Would love to get your feedback on the methodology or any shows you think should've ranked higher!

100% all of these three. Bloodline is a slow burn that is just jawdroppingly beautiful, and was Sam Shepard's last acting role. Sissy Spacek is radiant. Ben Mendelsohn is fascinating. Linda Cardellini is gorgeous (as always) and Norbert Butz (as youngest brother Kevin) gives some of the finest acting I've ever seen. In fact, after I finish my current rewatch of Ozark, I've just convinced myself to revisit Bloodline again. It is so, so good.

Glad to see Bosch getting some respect. I never hear people talk about but it's the best cop show currently airing.

61 upvotes on reddit
lapexegends · 5 years ago

Bosch is also a curious case when it comes to original shows on streaming platforms because Amazon Prime in certain European countries still doesn't have access to the latest season despite it being release 6 months ago.

I've speculated it's because the show actually predates Prime video launching in the area and the rights to the show were sold elsewhere but it feels like a stain on the whole service when they don't even have full access to their own shows.

I liked 3 of the 8 episodes, didn’t love, but liked. There were 3 I thought were ok, and 2 that felt like a waste of time. I don’t see “very good” for any individual episode, let alone for the show as a whole, but to each his own.

It just wasn’t concise at all. I think the shortest episode was 60 minutes, and a few were 90 minutes. If episodes are going to be longer than an hour, they’d better be good. Other than the 3 episodes I liked (1,7,8 - all of which still could have been shorter), I don’t feel that the ideas and/or execution of those ideas were good at all. The episode about the piano teacher accused of sexual misconduct and the Mexico episode about the journalist or whatever were the two worst. I found them to be dull and pretty devoid of substance. In most of the episodes, the “Romanoff” link felt pretty needless and forced too.

u/Kadde- there's a huge hype for Bosch on this subreddit. If I'm speaking honestly, I thought it was a decent show, but nothing out of the ordinary. Bosch was an interesting character, and I liked the relationship between him and his daughter. However, beyond that, it becomes quite routine. I thought Season 1, 2, and 4 were the best. The other ones were decent, but nothing to write home about.

I loved it up until season 4 then I got a bit burned out on it. I think mainly because I find his daughter and ex wife insufferable. I'll probably get back into it though as the general writing and grittiness of LA that it portrays are top notch.

Lol if a show takes 3 seasons to get your interest, you're watching the wrong show.

There's a ridiculous amount of good stuff to watch. No idea why people waste time watching things they don't even enjoy.

Not really. It's the same kind of format each season. I have found it a bit formulaic as the seasons have gone on but I'm in too deep not to finish it.

Came here to say that. Patriot was sooo good and I had never heard of it. Just stumbled upon it while browsing around. One of the most unique shows I have seen. Cannot recommend enough

Stunning show, and as they've developed the show, they've done a great job of fixing some early issues.

Shocked this isn't higher. I think it's one of the most consistently well written and acted shows on television full stop.

I'm not usually a fan of crime shows, but Bosch is something else. That's peak Amazon Prime Video.

Very true. I’ve seen every episode from the original, and both seasons of legacy. Not a fan of cop shows but Bosch is just a great all around. Great supporting cast, great stories. Excellent camera work. Legacy starts off a bit different but by season two it feels just like the original series.

I work in IT. Thought I was going to love the show. Just couldn’t get past the main character. He’s way too socially awkward for me to enjoy a show centered around him as the main character. Felt like he was on the spectrum the whole few episodes I watched.

best amazon prime original series

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Amazon Prime Original Series:

  1. Genre Preferences: Consider what genres you enjoy most (drama, comedy, sci-fi, thriller, etc.) to narrow down your options.

  2. Critical Acclaim: Look for series that have received awards or nominations, as this often indicates high quality. Shows with high ratings on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes or IMDb can also be a good indicator.

  3. Viewer Reviews: Check viewer reviews and ratings to gauge audience reception. Series with a strong fan base often indicate engaging content.

  4. Production Quality: High production values, including cinematography, writing, and acting, can significantly enhance your viewing experience.

  5. Length and Episode Count: Consider how much time you want to invest. Some series have shorter seasons or episodes, making them easier to binge-watch.

Top Recommendations:

  1. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: A comedy-drama about a 1950s housewife who pursues a career in stand-up comedy. It has won multiple Emmy Awards and is praised for its writing and performances.

  2. Fleabag: A critically acclaimed dark comedy that follows a young woman navigating life and love in London. It’s known for its sharp wit and emotional depth.

  3. The Boys: A gritty take on the superhero genre, exploring themes of power and corruption. It has received praise for its unique storytelling and character development.

  4. The Man in the High Castle: A dystopian series based on Philip K. Dick's novel, depicting an alternate history where the Axis powers won World War II. It’s known for its intriguing premise and strong visuals.

  5. Good Omens: A fantasy-comedy series based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, featuring an angel and a demon teaming up to prevent the apocalypse. It’s well-received for its humor and performances.

Recommendation: If you enjoy character-driven stories with humor, start with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel or Fleabag. For action and a darker tone, The Boys is a must-watch. Each of these series has garnered critical acclaim and offers a unique viewing experience.
