I have loved the first two episodes.
…Calling it a masterpiece before the season finishes airing is the definition of premature.
Seriously. Wait and see how it goes before declaring it a masterpiece. Lots of shows start strong because that's where the writers had all the best ideas. Let's see what else they got.
I absolutely loved it, but definitely too early to call it a masterpiece. If they can keep it this good for 6 more episodes...then yeah that would be absolutely incredible. It's easy to start strong, but can they say strong and end strong
I agree. I find the storytelling dense, but not rushed (if that makes sense). I feel like a lot of the critics missed the Expanse-type intro in ep 1 setting the stage for what was coming. (You'd think the heavy Peter Pan metaphors would've done the trick, but whatever.)
This story is in a different part of the Alien universe than we've seen before. It's exploring some of the same themes glimpsed in Prometheus and Covenant, botched as those were by the filmmakers.
There's a lot of potential here. It reminds me of the first season of House of Cards in how hard it punches out of the gate.
Are you... not a paid shill? Wtf is wrong with you, don't you want to give Hulu your money?
The only thing I'm not quite digging is the look of the alien itself, not just in some of the weird slow motion CGI shots, but close up, it looks too clean and polished. Maybe I'm just used to xenos looking gritty and wet? When I see this and it looks rubbery, idk, the design isn't landing for me.
Everything else I like so far.. I'm digging the Wendy character, Olyphant's character is intriguing. I can't wait for the "boy genius" to get his comeuppance.
The atmosphere is great, my god the production of the ship interior itself is heavenly!
Also to note: Except for "twinkle little star", there hasn't ever been a lot of modern references in the Alien series that I can recall. ALIEN + TOOL is a match made in heaven, but still jarring and pulls me out of the experience. Ice Age, Peter Pan and clips of a 1960's Baseball game feels out of place in many respects.
But hopefully they've gotten a lot of that out of their system and the next 6 episodes will delve more into character stuff and leave a lot of "this is definitely set on Earth and here's some remember berries to help you not forget" out of the rest of the story.
I'm really liking the boy genius character so far. I'm curious to see how far he will go to entertain and indulge himself. And at what point he will be forced to abandon something he wants in favor of profit, as well as the tantrum he will throw after.
I'm definitely hoping he gets more warped as the show goes on and gets his comeuppance as well.
Same. There's a LOT to like about them. They're gorgeous looking, the actors generally are great. The dialogue is a bit messy and theres wayyyyy too many convenient reasons why someone holding a rifle doesn't shoot a xeno.
Im enjoying it but I wouldnt say its a masterpiece at all.
Im probably in the minority here but so far, Idk, the show is not doing it for me so far. Im really not a fan of it set on earth and humanity apparently discovering Alien Eggs before ALIEN
It feels like what you'd expect if current-Disney did survival-horror. It's weirdly jarring. It's not as clever as the writers think it is, tho it's very nice to look at. I'm torn between geeking out at the visuals, while hating the plot holes and out of character actions and comic relief and bad decisions.
I'm thinking that if the characters are going to behave stupidly then they are deservedly going to die, and if they don't then what is the point of making the alien so bad-ass. All characters have to behave consistently, including the xeno and that's just not happening at the moment.
> if current-Disney did survival-horror.
Ah, so that's why they are advertising Peter Pan and Ice Age in the show. Trying to get you to subscribe and keep streaming
The first two episodes have been visually nice but otherwise poor. The plot is ridiculous. The new alien creatures are a joke. The main bloke looks like he doesn’t know why he’s there. The main girl is the only interesting character really. Timothy Olyphant even looks like he doesn’t want to be there!
It started off looking like they were going to get it right. It felt like Alien. Fantastic looking set, excellent familiar audio… and then just goes “psych! We’re not doing that, here’s a ridiculous Swiss cheese plot line instead”.
Overall, very disappointing. I was so excited for this.

The show is just straight up not very good. I want to like it so bad and the things it gets right it absolutely nails, but there’s so many dumb weird things that just ruin it for me. I hope people like it but calling what we’ve seen so far a “masterpiece” is just dumb.
Agreed. It does a lot of things amazingly well! But the story breaks all tension and threat of the xeno almost immediately. I am fine with establishing new threats in this universe, but the show immediately makes the xenomorph out to be the same efficient killer we all know, but then completely ignores/fail against the helpless brother on two occasions. Breaks all the tension they worked so hard to establish.
“Not very good” is accurate. I mean up until recently, this was the show that had a female lead who didn’t want to do a promo article/shoot or something and people had to make do with the other main actors for that bit.
Then I hear it’s “amazing” “phenomenal” and so I watch. I wasn’t invested in any of the characters. It felt oddly choppy, the pacing. Maybe it needs room to breathe but for now it’s very meh for me.
How about we don't jump the gun yet in proclaiming anything a masterpiece. The thing has 2 episodes out. I don't trust ratings, a massive IP making its TV debut with such a decent budget like this and standard Alien action would've gotten it a 90%+ score even if there is iffy writing - and that last point is the one I'm more interested in.
There's always massive hype for similar projects around the time of release and there's always the chance after a couple of months pass we see more and more 'that was some stupid shit' sentiments.
The review I saw they had the whole season to review and said it gets better as it goes on. Most regular media outlet reviews probably got the whole season.
Sure but Noah Hawley’s track record is sublime and having watched it I absolutely loved it. Maybe it goes off the rails now but so far, so good.
Here’s the thing, they spent a masterpiece amount of money on it so you better hope it hits. (One of my favorite shows this year)
I'm a huge alien fan, played all alien games and watched the movies but should i wait for the series to finish before watching or watch it now?
Yes. I was not a fan of the first 2 episodes like everyone else. I'll try to keep an open mind moving forward but I'm not impressed at all and i love most of the alien franchise.
I mean, they're watching ice age at some point. It's filled with crap like that and very hero saves the thay centric and has no reason to be set in that time frame before the first alien movie.
It nails the aesthetic and overall feel of the world. The story is very different to anything else in the franchise and frankly pretty weird. If your familiar with Noah Hawleys previous stuff (Fargo, Legion) and like it then you are probably gonna like Alien Earth as well.
Agreed. There is a lot of this show that is amazing so far: amazingly detailed sets, great acting, great production and atmosphere.
But the absurd amount of plot armour given to the lead characters breaks all the show's tension. The show immediately presents the Xeno as an efficiently deadly force, but somehow ignores or fails to harm the helpless brother on multiple occasions when right next to him. The xenomorph has already lost all tension.
OP, just because the title is clickbait doesn't mean your title has to be. Just add the name of the show.
Dying for sex was hilarious. Didn’t know Michelle Williams could be so funny and Rob Delaney is so lovable, my sugar bear with type 1 and 2 diabetes (Deadpool reference)
The Great was so good! I wish it wasn’t cancelled.
But Only Murders and Paradise were chef kiss
Hazzah!!! That show was FANTASTIC!
Dopesick if that counts
Really liked Res Dogs to
Edit: See Dopesick in the article, that’s my choice for sure
Perfect!
Only Murder in the Building - not really debatable 😊😊😊
NO SHOGUN?!!?
Ohh ... missed it
I’m in need of new shows as I’ve been known to just rewatch the same shows over and over again. Some favorites include:
Genres I don’t particularly like include:
Six Fert Under. Definitely the best show I've ever watched. Great characters. Great story. Perfect ending. Just amazing all around.
Ozark, breaking bad, better call Saul, Mr robot,
As someone with the same taste, have you seen Legion, Severance, or Dark? Those are all 3 up there with the shows you listed for me
Edit: Also, Barry! And Preacher (oh.. boy)
upvote for Dark! in my opinion, it’s in the top 3 of best shows ever made
Oh yeah, so good! I haven’t seen preacher but loved the others!
I truly feel like Ozark was slept on since day one!
I love Ozark. The blue tint of it all soothes my soul.
Mr Robot. So peak
I think Mr robot just needs a larger fan base, it doesn’t get spoken about nearly enough. Compared to a show like breaking bad (I consider the 2 in the same “tier”) everyone and their mother has seen breaking bad or at least knows of it. If I mention Mr robot to someone there’s a decent chance they’ve never heard of it before
Prob not a good match, but Sopranos is the best TV show I’ve ever watched
And it's not even close. By the time you get fully invested with The Sopranos you start to literally feel like they're a part of your family (or you a part of theirs!) and especially with the finale for all that to just end.... It always feels kinda weird to just move on - sounds kinda crazy, but I'm sure some out there understand!
I would not call it slow. Much faster paced than like a breaking bad imo. And it’s my favorite show ever. So good. Keeps you on the edge of your seat. So many plot twists
One that is gripping or interesting from the start.
I like anything but horror.
Thanks in advance.
Smiley face.
This is one of the best shows on television in the last few years across any streaming platform.
We just finished watching season 2. It's such an amazing show.
Agree. I hope theirs going to be a season 3. But someone said no.
Good news: a 3rd season was announced. :)
Veronica Mars
I am honestly surprised at how much I enjoy that show. Didn't watch it when it initially aired. She has just enough of a sarcastic/smart alec attitude at times. Not too much of an attitude, just enough to make it funny.
The Handmaid’s Tale. Every episode is edge-of-your-seat!
Oh I'll have to watch it because I'm hearing that it's really good from other people too.
Season 5 is coming soon!!!
It truly is! I’m a man who watched it religiously, fully aware that its premise is not unrealistic in the America we’re living in today. With the reversal of Roe v. Wade, I fear for all women and, ultimately, for all of us who stand to potentially have our rights eroded away one by one.
Yeah. I really enjoyed it. The acting is fantastic.
Season 2 confirmed though. I have to say per my opinion this is the best Hulu Original I’ve ever come across having been subscribed for at least 5 years.
FX shows : Fargo, Snowfall, Wilfred, Baskets, Archer, Always Sunny, Atlanta
Don't forget Sons of Anarchy!
Better Things too
OMG Fargo was AMAZING.
Homeland, The Americans, Shogun, Line of Duty, Hell on Wheels
Solid list! Shogun and The Americans especially had me hooked from the start.
The Americans!! Great show!
Yes, Reservation Dogs is #1 in the Must Watch category.
I like James Marsden and will watch most anything he’s in. I also like dystopian or sci fi. Paradise was really good. Marsden was the President in Paradise, but not really the main character.
This was a great short series.
Only Murders in the Building, Schitts Creek, What We Do in the Shadows, The Handmaid’s Tale.
best show on Hulu, bar none
Eh it was fine, episode 7 was great. But I’d put Rez Dogs, the Bear, Dopesick, Ramy all above it personally
If you have multiple, what are they? And if you have an order list, what is it? What are your top 5 favorites?
Here are the Hulu Originals for reminder:
Shrill (Season 2), High Fidelity, Big Time Adolescence (Film), Normal People, Mrs. America, Solar Opposites, The Great, Little Fires Everywhere, Delivered (Film), My Valentine (Film), Devs, Midnight Kiss (Film), Hillary, Baghdad Central, Utopia Falls, Margaret Atwood: A Word Is A Word Is A Word (Documentary Film), Future Man (Season 3), Crawlers (Film), Pooka 2: Pooka Lives (Film).
And for conversations sake, since these films couldn’t get significant theatrical releases, I’ll just count them as Hulu Originals:
The Painter and the Thief (Film, Neon), Spaceship Earth (Film, Neon).
I can't get enough of Normal People. Rewatching after knowing where it ends, and seeing the psychology of the characters develop. The deep rooted anxiety and abuse issues between the 2 characters. I hate myself for the thirst, but I can't stop watching it.
I’ve heard that it’s a sleeper Emmy potential! I haven’t watched it yet, but I plan to sometime in the next two weeks.
I loved it even more on the second watch.
Plus teh sex
The Great was pretty fun. Enjoyed Devs, too.
I plan to watch The Great next! I’ve heard nothing but positive thought about it.
I just started, I’m going on the 3rd episode but it’s really great so far! Plus the score and visuals are top notch.
I really liked Solar Opposites, I’ve talked to plenty of people that feel the opposite way though. I think the drama of Rick and Morty is the worst part of the show and Solar Opposites does away with all of that and turns the absurdity up to 10. I loved Justin Roiland’s shorts pre-R&M which were very absurd and I always thought Dan Harmon was holding him back, I like Harmon’s work but SO confirmed he was preventing R&M from being as out there as it could’ve been.
If the drama is your favorite part of R&M you might not like this show but I’m honestly really looking forward to the next season.
I binged it all the other day and loved it. The second half definitely picked up from the first half and there was a surprising amount of connections across the season.
I do wish that maybe in the 3rd season (yeah I’m assuming this show will be around for a lot of years lmao) they get 13 episodes instead of just 8 though.
Since it’s a side project I wouldn’t be surprised if it stayed at 8 but I could see it getting 4 seasons, they’re already on for another season but corona will delay it for sure
I’m glad to see some Hillary love! The documentary was surprisingly really interesting and personal.
I’m just finishing up OMITB & I must say, it’s one of my favorite shows I’ve ever watched. But instead of rewatching it, I’d like to check out other funny Hulu exclusives while i wait for the new season! Please recommend anything, doesn’t necessarily need to b comedy! TIA
The Great lives up to its name.
I don’t hear people talking about this show much, but it’s such a gem, I loved it so much!!
We just started watching it in my house. We just started season 2 and I think it’s brilliant. Huzzah!
Shogun
Reboot
Reservation Dogs
Paradise
I felt personally betrayed when they canceled reboot
Reservation dogs is really good.
Deli Boys
That was such a fun watch
DEVS. Saw it recommended here and it's fantastic.
#Future Man
Only one comment and it is what I came here to say.
Full disclosure: This is mostly hypothetical, although I might end up watching something you recommend.
Let's say that I was new to this streaming service, and I wanted to get a really good first impression of it that would really make me want to keep going back to it all the time, what shows and movies would you recommend to me, and why would you recommend to me, and why?
My tastes are towards serious shows and movies. Big fan of dramas, and the supernatural(IE, fantasy, sci-fi, and horror.)
Castle Rock
I really liked the show but had trouble keeping up with it - might be time for a second go around… it’s been a very long time since I tried
Future Man
Season 1 is amazing. The others... meh
What We Do in the Shadows
One of my favorite comedy shows and a great rewatch value. Taika Waititi is a genius
The Handmaids Tale
Palm Springs
Futurama or It's Always Sunny. These are my go to shows.
2nd on Always Sunny
Malcolm in the middle
Psych
LetterKenny
Haven’t seen it, I’ll check it out. Thanks.
Amazing show, you won't be dissapointed
I learned about it on another sub Reddit and I watched it and fell in love. Show is funny and I binged them all in no the me at all.
