I have loved the first two episodes.

…Calling it a masterpiece before the season finishes airing is the definition of premature.

Seriously. Wait and see how it goes before declaring it a masterpiece. Lots of shows start strong because that's where the writers had all the best ideas. Let's see what else they got.

7 upvotes on reddit
Kageromero · 1 month ago

I absolutely loved it, but definitely too early to call it a masterpiece. If they can keep it this good for 6 more episodes...then yeah that would be absolutely incredible. It's easy to start strong, but can they say strong and end strong

ManJesusPreaches · 1 month ago

I agree. I find the storytelling dense, but not rushed (if that makes sense). I feel like a lot of the critics missed the Expanse-type intro in ep 1 setting the stage for what was coming. (You'd think the heavy Peter Pan metaphors would've done the trick, but whatever.)

This story is in a different part of the Alien universe than we've seen before. It's exploring some of the same themes glimpsed in Prometheus and Covenant, botched as those were by the filmmakers.

There's a lot of potential here. It reminds me of the first season of House of Cards in how hard it punches out of the gate.

The only thing I'm not quite digging is the look of the alien itself, not just in some of the weird slow motion CGI shots, but close up, it looks too clean and polished. Maybe I'm just used to xenos looking gritty and wet? When I see this and it looks rubbery, idk, the design isn't landing for me.

Everything else I like so far.. I'm digging the Wendy character, Olyphant's character is intriguing. I can't wait for the "boy genius" to get his comeuppance.

The atmosphere is great, my god the production of the ship interior itself is heavenly!

Also to note: Except for "twinkle little star", there hasn't ever been a lot of modern references in the Alien series that I can recall. ALIEN + TOOL is a match made in heaven, but still jarring and pulls me out of the experience. Ice Age, Peter Pan and clips of a 1960's Baseball game feels out of place in many respects.

But hopefully they've gotten a lot of that out of their system and the next 6 episodes will delve more into character stuff and leave a lot of "this is definitely set on Earth and here's some remember berries to help you not forget" out of the rest of the story.

SquirrelGirlVA · 1 month ago

I'm really liking the boy genius character so far. I'm curious to see how far he will go to entertain and indulge himself. And at what point he will be forced to abandon something he wants in favor of profit, as well as the tantrum he will throw after.

I'm definitely hoping he gets more warped as the show goes on and gets his comeuppance as well.

5 upvotes on reddit
DoomscrollingRumi · 1 month ago

Same. There's a LOT to like about them. They're gorgeous looking, the actors generally are great. The dialogue is a bit messy and theres wayyyyy too many convenient reasons why someone holding a rifle doesn't shoot a xeno.

Im enjoying it but I wouldnt say its a masterpiece at all.

Johncurtisreeve · 1 month ago

Im probably in the minority here but so far, Idk, the show is not doing it for me so far. Im really not a fan of it set on earth and humanity apparently discovering Alien Eggs before ALIEN

It feels like what you'd expect if current-Disney did survival-horror. It's weirdly jarring. It's not as clever as the writers think it is, tho it's very nice to look at. I'm torn between geeking out at the visuals, while hating the plot holes and out of character actions and comic relief and bad decisions.

I'm thinking that if the characters are going to behave stupidly then they are deservedly going to die, and if they don't then what is the point of making the alien so bad-ass. All characters have to behave consistently, including the xeno and that's just not happening at the moment.

Ah, so that's why they are advertising Peter Pan and Ice Age in the show. Trying to get you to subscribe and keep streaming

The first two episodes have been visually nice but otherwise poor. The plot is ridiculous. The new alien creatures are a joke. The main bloke looks like he doesn’t know why he’s there. The main girl is the only interesting character really. Timothy Olyphant even looks like he doesn’t want to be there!

It started off looking like they were going to get it right. It felt like Alien. Fantastic looking set, excellent familiar audio… and then just goes “psych! We’re not doing that, here’s a ridiculous Swiss cheese plot line instead”.

Overall, very disappointing. I was so excited for this.

The show is just straight up not very good. I want to like it so bad and the things it gets right it absolutely nails, but there’s so many dumb weird things that just ruin it for me. I hope people like it but calling what we’ve seen so far a “masterpiece” is just dumb.

10 upvotes on reddit
Harmonic_Flatulence · 1 month ago

Agreed. It does a lot of things amazingly well! But the story breaks all tension and threat of the xeno almost immediately. I am fine with establishing new threats in this universe, but the show immediately makes the xenomorph out to be the same efficient killer we all know, but then completely ignores/fail against the helpless brother on two occasions. Breaks all the tension they worked so hard to establish.

7 upvotes on reddit
baddadjokesminusdad · 1 month ago

“Not very good” is accurate. I mean up until recently, this was the show that had a female lead who didn’t want to do a promo article/shoot or something and people had to make do with the other main actors for that bit.

Then I hear it’s “amazing” “phenomenal” and so I watch. I wasn’t invested in any of the characters. It felt oddly choppy, the pacing. Maybe it needs room to breathe but for now it’s very meh for me.

How about we don't jump the gun yet in proclaiming anything a masterpiece. The thing has 2 episodes out. I don't trust ratings, a massive IP making its TV debut with such a decent budget like this and standard Alien action would've gotten it a 90%+ score even if there is iffy writing - and that last point is the one I'm more interested in.

There's always massive hype for similar projects around the time of release and there's always the chance after a couple of months pass we see more and more 'that was some stupid shit' sentiments.

Yes. I was not a fan of the first 2 episodes like everyone else. I'll try to keep an open mind moving forward but I'm not impressed at all and i love most of the alien franchise.

I mean, they're watching ice age at some point. It's filled with crap like that and very hero saves the thay centric and has no reason to be set in that time frame before the first alien movie.

0 upvotes on reddit
isdeasdeusde · 1 month ago

It nails the aesthetic and overall feel of the world. The story is very different to anything else in the franchise and frankly pretty weird. If your familiar with Noah Hawleys previous stuff (Fargo, Legion) and like it then you are probably gonna like Alien Earth as well.

4 upvotes on reddit
Harmonic_Flatulence · 1 month ago

Agreed. There is a lot of this show that is amazing so far: amazingly detailed sets, great acting, great production and atmosphere.

But the absurd amount of plot armour given to the lead characters breaks all the show's tension. The show immediately presents the Xeno as an efficiently deadly force, but somehow ignores or fails to harm the helpless brother on multiple occasions when right next to him. The xenomorph has already lost all tension.

What is the best show you ever watched?

I’m in need of new shows as I’ve been known to just rewatch the same shows over and over again. Some favorites include:

  • The Closer
  • Major Crimes
  • Rizzoli & Isles
  • The Vampire Diaries
  • Agents of SHIELD
  • Pretty Little Liars (and spinoffs)
  • Big Bang Theory
  • Hawaii Five-0
  • Magnum PI
  • SWAT
  • Blue Bloods
  • NCIS (and spinoffs)
  • FBI franchise
  • One Chicago shows
  • Outer Banks
  • The 100
  • Summerhouse

Genres I don’t particularly like include:

  • True Crime
  • Non-Fiction/Documentary (nothing based on true stories)
  • Horror

I think Mr robot just needs a larger fan base, it doesn’t get spoken about nearly enough. Compared to a show like breaking bad (I consider the 2 in the same “tier”) everyone and their mother has seen breaking bad or at least knows of it. If I mention Mr robot to someone there’s a decent chance they’ve never heard of it before

31 upvotes on reddit

And it's not even close. By the time you get fully invested with The Sopranos you start to literally feel like they're a part of your family (or you a part of theirs!) and especially with the finale for all that to just end.... It always feels kinda weird to just move on - sounds kinda crazy, but I'm sure some out there understand!

What Are Your Favorite Hulu Originals So Far This Year?

Posted by trillmercy · in r/Hulu · 5 years ago

If you have multiple, what are they? And if you have an order list, what is it? What are your top 5 favorites?

Here are the Hulu Originals for reminder:

Shrill (Season 2), High Fidelity, Big Time Adolescence (Film), Normal People, Mrs. America, Solar Opposites, The Great, Little Fires Everywhere, Delivered (Film), My Valentine (Film), Devs, Midnight Kiss (Film), Hillary, Baghdad Central, Utopia Falls, Margaret Atwood: A Word Is A Word Is A Word (Documentary Film), Future Man (Season 3), Crawlers (Film), Pooka 2: Pooka Lives (Film).

And for conversations sake, since these films couldn’t get significant theatrical releases, I’ll just count them as Hulu Originals:

The Painter and the Thief (Film, Neon), Spaceship Earth (Film, Neon).

I really liked Solar Opposites, I’ve talked to plenty of people that feel the opposite way though. I think the drama of Rick and Morty is the worst part of the show and Solar Opposites does away with all of that and turns the absurdity up to 10. I loved Justin Roiland’s shorts pre-R&M which were very absurd and I always thought Dan Harmon was holding him back, I like Harmon’s work but SO confirmed he was preventing R&M from being as out there as it could’ve been.

If the drama is your favorite part of R&M you might not like this show but I’m honestly really looking forward to the next season.
