What Redditors are Saying

Best Netflix Original Movies

TL;DR Some standout Netflix original movies include "The Mitchells vs. The Machines," "Nimona," and "Over the Moon."

Animated Netflix Originals

Netflix has excelled in producing animated films that are both visually stunning and narratively engaging. "The Mitchells vs. The Machines" is frequently mentioned as one of the best animated films on Netflix, praised for its humor and creativity [1:6][1:11]. "Nimona" is another recommended title, noted for its unique storyline and animation quality [1:9]. Other notable mentions include "Leo," which is appreciated for its wholesome and engaging content, and "The Sea Beast," known for its gorgeous animation despite some pacing issues [1].

Critically Acclaimed Films

While Netflix's original movies can be hit or miss, there are a few exceptions that have received critical acclaim. "Hit Man," although not produced by Netflix, has been distributed exclusively in several countries by Netflix and has garnered positive reviews for its intriguing storyline [4:3][4:6].

Diverse Genres

Netflix offers a wide range of genres in its original films. For those interested in sci-fi, "Dark" is often hailed as one of the best pieces of content Netflix has ever produced, with viewers praising its complex narrative and execution [4:1][4:7]. Although primarily a series, it showcases Netflix's ability to produce high-quality content across different formats.

Recommendations Beyond the Discussions

For viewers looking for more recommendations beyond what was discussed, consider exploring other Netflix originals like "Roma," which won multiple Academy Awards, or "The Irishman," directed by Martin Scorsese, which has been critically acclaimed for its storytelling and performances. These films highlight Netflix's potential to create cinematic experiences that rival traditional Hollywood productions.

Netflix Original Animated Movies are surprisingly excellent?

ORIGINAL POST

Was looking for some stuff to watch with my wife recently. Noticed a whole slew of movies from the last 5 years in the animated section of Netflix that I had never heard of.

Threw on Leo not expecting much, and walked away loving the film. It was wholesome and funny, landing its jokes more than it flopped. It was paced well and most importantly: engaging.

Since Leo was excellent we ended up watching another one tonight: The Sea Beast. This movie had gorgeous animation. I was enthralled for the first 30 minutes. It drug on for a bit too long and basically ended up being "How To Train Your Sea Beast", but it was good enough that I don't regret watching or feel like I wasted my time. It got a bit muddled in its messaging in the second half and resolved the whole corrupt kingdom thing far too easily, but overall was fun.

I'm probably going to check out more of the recent Netflix Animated Films. Have I just been living under a rock? I've never heard of these and they seem solid. Maybe not Pixar and Dreamworks quality, but better than anything Illumination puts out at the very least.

Not a movie but Love, Death and Robots blew me away when bored me decided to give it a shot one day. Insanely great animation and all very short episodes. Can’t wait for the new season.

Technically it's not Netflix produced. But this is one series which left an impression. For anyone who is into cinema for anything beyond storytelling, watch this for the love of God!

Absolutely. Some of the best artists and studios in the world got together to each make their own I dependant short films, with various art styles, and they're all great in their own way.

I belive the people at Blur started it, they're known for many of the great videogame cinematics we've seen, and they got people from other studios to work together, get some funding and put their wild ideas out there.

There are photo realistic episodes with gore and dancing, 2D hand drawn episodes about fighting monsters, a cutesy miniature zombie invasion, wall-e type post apocalyptic robot stories... If you love sci-fi, it's just great and very different from anything else out there.

Yea they have done really well with animation. Not just films, but series too. Check out Nimona if you haven’t already.

Blue Eye Samurai was one of the best animated series I've ever seen.

I'd also recommend Scavengers Reign, the second-to-none BEST animated series I've ever watched. It was produced by Max, but it's now on Netflix.

Another new Netflix show that needs to named along side them: Scavengers Reign. A masterpiece of Sci Fi. Just watch it if you haven’t.

Originally a Max original but Netflix got the rights , hopefully it’ll get enough love for a second season.

Late to this, but Hill House is my all time favorite show. Yes it's spooky, but what gets me is the character development and the view of then vs now within this family- both as individuals and also how they relate to each other. Also, the time transitions are SO slick. It is a horror story, but it is sooo much more.

Absolutely watch the original German with subtitles. The acting in the show from all characters is amazing, and you lose a lot of the performance with English dub.

MM is the only show I've ever watched where I would straight up skip scenes. The self-important monologues can be so tedious. But everything else is so good that I still highly recommend everyone give the show a shot.

What are your top 5 Netflix Original Series?

Posted by austenjg · in r/netflix · 3 years ago

To qualify as a Netflix Original the show must have debuted and only aired on Netflix. I’m sure most of you know that but I thought I would be clear of the definition. My top 5 are:

  1. The Umbrella Academy

  2. Stranger Things

  3. Ozark

  4. Squid Game

  5. Dark

Ok, it took way longer than I imagined because I didn't know any other way but to just count the damn things, but I managed to tally up everything from u/Roo2695 sorted by new. I will update it later with the new votes but I need a break.

I added The title's IMDB score mostly for you to reference but it also gave me a way to organize all of the ties. (Special shout out to u/PRguyhere for boldly picking the lowest rate Floor is Lava)

Hope this helps some people find themselves a good new show to watch. To the cool people that commented in a nice clean list form; you rock. Then there were people that didn't even use commas and I had to figure out what shows like Meat Eater Maid were...

I kept with the spirit of OP's actual question, anyone who voted 6, I just counted the first five. I didn't count the honorable mentions, and tried to only add Netflix originals according to how the comments reacted to the lists. I'm not an authority on that matter. Anyway Here's the list so far:

Peaky Blinders, Cobra Kai, Suits, Vikings, Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul all were mentioned but are the more obvious ones that are not originals. They are all certainly worth a watch though.

I left in some of the controversial ones or ones that so many picked I just left it. Such as You, or Black Mirror etc. I can remove them if people want me to.

Some said the whole Marvel Series as their answer which is cool but hard to tally. Most people didn't distinguish the two Narcos so I left it as on. Most did however distinguish the Haunted Hill shows so I kept the votes separate.

I didn't add the Standups but the ones people suggested were Chapelle, Bo Burnham, and Gad

Movies that I saw listed were Bruno, Mercy, and A Marriage Story.

What is THE best netflix original movie or series you have seen?

Title pretty much. I'm also looking for some new reccs, since as of recent, I have not really enjoyed/nor seen anything that has piqued your interest the way some of their content has in the past. My hands-down favorite piece of content from them is definitely Ozark.

Edit: Thank you for all your reccs! Did not expect so many to comment. Also, yes I know their movies are usually kinda sucky, but there's a few exceptions!

they cancel ALL the good shows and keep ALL the crappy ones. if there's an exception to this it was pure luck.

They pretty much exclusively make garbage reality crap, $200 million movies that flop. The only good content is the 'originals' they buy from foreign networks.

If you are paying close attention they really do explain everything and tie up all the loose ends. I’m not saying g that to sound like a jerk. It really does require some extra work on the part of the viewer but it’s so worth it. I love the show and agree it is easily the best thing on Netflix but it was very intense and sometimes felt like I was studying.

I really really want to like this show. I tried to watch it 3 times so far...

It is not the language because I know German enough to be able to follow with english subtitles and I enjoy when a series are in a different language buuuut I cannot bring myself to care about any of the characters!

I mean they are so distant and emotionless and grey...even when they talk about something they care about.. I watch and things happen and I am like ehh okay. I think the show doesnt give us enough time to get attached to the characters and there are so many characters it becomes difficult to follow and I got disengaged. Sometimes characters give each other looooong meaningful stares and say cryptic shit and i am like what? Am I suppose to know what you are talking about? Did I miss a scene? The whole experience of watching it for me was this "wtf did I miss? Am I at the right episode"

But like I said I really want to be able to finish the first season because people say season 2 is amazing and season 1 has some good mindblowers.. Can someone just tell me from pm what is the deal with everyone in the show even if its a spoiler?

Or maybe give a different perspective-spoiler free?

For example what made you like this show so much?

Finally I knew I couldn't have been the only one to see this hidden gem of a series. 10/10 right up there if not better than stranger things. More like a dark realistic take of back to the future. IMO a great portayal of the butterfly effects that would come with messing with the manipulation of time.

Dark is not a "hidden gem", it is actually one of the most popular Netflix originals.

Just for comparison: Dark has 1.9m followers on TVTime. Squid Game has 1.3m followers. The Crown has 1.2m followers. House of Cards has 1.4m followers.

Dark is definitely mentioned on any thread about good Netflix shows. I keep having trouble getting into it myself. The first episode hasn’t quite grabbed me.

Stranger things was very cool and all but the political backstabbers feast that was House of Cards was insanely captivating. The way it was filmed with Spacey talking to the viewers was a great way to really keep me invested. Gonna watch it again now brb.

House of Cards is really good, but I can’t see any of the other Netflix shows that blew up as much as Stranger Things. Except maybe Daredevil. That blew up really well too.

Interesting I love the show and I actually thought season 2 was really good. Off top of my head I can't recall the older detectives name but he is so good in the show I enjoyed how he was more of the main character in the second season than the younger guy. I should rewatch. Such a well shot show.

What's The Best Original Netflix Movie You've Seen?

like the title says, what's the best original film from Netflix you've seen? for me it's 'The Night Comes For Us'

dark & violent as fuck martial arts movie. reminiscent of The Raid 2. it wasn't some profound masterpiece or anything, but it was a bloody good time.

i deeply love this movie. i think about it quite often. its a weird mishmash of genres that works surprisingly well. And its hard to go wrong with Melanie Lynskey and Elijah Wood.

Also just captures this feeling of mid-2010s ennui so well (“everyones an asshole!”).

People love to shit on The Irishman but I think it's pretty close to great. Yea some of the CGI stuff is wonky but it's just a compelling classic mob story, and serves as a perfect denouement/meta-commentary on that aspect of Scorsese's career.

Other really good ones are Da 5 Bloods, Okja, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, The Meyerowitz Stories, Tick, Tick... Boom!, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and They Cloned Tyrone. Never got around to Roma or Mank.

Meyerowitz Stories is probably in my top ten films. The writing in that movie is so good and Sandler’s performance is stellar (although Elizabeth Marvel kinda steals the movie for me). The Irishman will get its due eventually. The last 30-45 mins of that film haunt me to this day.

Not a movie, but I’ll always bring up The Haunting of Hill House wherever I get the chance. Going on 6 years now of watching it all the way through during Spooky Season - each time discovering something new, each time flooring me with its perfection.

I couldn’t stand horror… until Flanagan.

Not enough people talk about it. Easily one of the best horror films to come out in the last decade, and Dan Stevens’ performance in it was nothing short of incredible (I was already a fan of his thanks to his lead role on Legion).

Best TV show of all time? Homicide: Life on the Street and you can now see it on Peacock.

Not a fan of cops in general, but how the David Simon book comes to life is incredible. Great characters, I sincerely love this show. Richard Belzer, André Braugher, Yaphet Kotto, Melissa Leo is a goddess, Michelle Forbes, Kyle Secor. It's just great show and it hasn't been available to view for decades. You can see how the Wire developed out of this incredible network show.

This year he was the only one to predict Fernanda Torres winning the Golden Globe and I’m Still Here getting a Best Picture Oscar nomination. So… let’s say he’s usually good with bold predictions. I really think PTA should win Best Director, OBAA is a cinematic achievement.

Whats going to hold Sinners back is its lack of acting nominations. A few movies are going to have three spots down.

I had to read same kind of comments about Fernanda Torres winning globes and getting a best actress nomination… perhaps some people think engagement is the only reason possible for a South American movie to be listed among favorites, even if it is Cannes most awarded film.

Plus all three of those have a reason for not breaking into the acting categories--LOTR is massive ensemble and it's hard to separate out certain actors, and Slumdog and Parasite were foreign actors most Academy members hadn't heard of (so a combination of racism and campaign strategy).

This seems to have been all but forgotten. But it should be up there with Hotel Rawanda, City of God, or  La Haine.  Idris elba is at his absolute best.  The scene with the mute kid embracing Agu after... It: heartbreaking.  The hotel ransacking where Agu just snaps, has stuck with me for years now
