TL;DR Lake Compounce is widely regarded as the best amusement park in Connecticut due to its historical significance, thrilling rides like Boulder Dash, and family-friendly atmosphere.
Lake Compounce
Lake Compounce, located in Bristol, Connecticut, is often highlighted as the top amusement park in the state. It is notable for being one of the oldest continuously operating amusement parks in the US, offering a mix of history and modern attractions [2:2]. The park is famous for Boulder Dash, which is considered one of the best wooden roller coasters in the world and a must-ride for coaster enthusiasts
[1:2]
[2:6]. Visitors appreciate the park's charm, with classic flat rides and a scenic setting that makes it an attractive destination for families and thrill-seekers alike
[2:1].
Comparison with Other Parks
In comparisons with other regional parks, such as Rye Playland, Lake Compounce frequently comes out on top due to its variety of rides and attractions, despite less theming than some might prefer [2:3]
[2:4]. While Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury, CT, offers nostalgic rides like the Wild Mouse coaster, it doesn't match Lake Compounce's range of offerings or its renowned roller coasters
[4:1]
[4:7].
Recent Developments and Management
Lake Compounce has undergone management changes, now under Herschend Family Entertainment, which has sparked optimism about future improvements and investments in the park [5:1]
[5:2]. This change is expected to enhance the park's offerings while maintaining its historical charm.
Visitor Experience
Visitors generally have positive experiences at Lake Compounce, enjoying both the thrill rides and the family-friendly environment. The park also hosts seasonal events, such as haunted attractions in October, which are popular among guests [3:4]
[3:6]. Despite some past issues with ride maintenance, most major attractions are operational, ensuring a fulfilling visit
[3:2]

Overall, Lake Compounce stands out as the premier amusement park in Connecticut, offering a blend of historical significance, thrilling rides, and a welcoming atmosphere for all ages.
I am back with another park review! This time it is Lake Compounce in CT! I will review this with the same criteria as my past reviews. I will score the park according to 5 categories: Theme/ambience, Thrill Rides, Family Rides, Non-Ride Entertainment & Food, and Cost Value. I will rate the park up to 2 points per section, and give my thoughts as to why I gave that rating. Lastly, I will add up the individual points to give the park a final overall score, with a 10 being a perfect score. So with that, lets begin!
Lake Compounce- Bristol, Connecticut
Theme/Ambience: Lake Compounce is America’s oldest continuously open Amusement Park. They market themselves as America’s First Amusmenent Park. The park itself while old, looks like a modern amusement park with some older rides. It is very clean and the location on the lake on the side of a mountain is gorgeous. The park lacks any real theming but is very well taken care of and pretty to walk around and take in the site. My favorite part of the park’s ambience was the enterance. While walking towards the tunnel leading to the park there were speakers playing very magical music. The tunnel had very pretty colorful lights and as you walk through the tunnel you are given a welcome site of the parks Main Street with the historic Wildcat in the backdrop. Its a very magical entrance and provides a lovely first impression of the park. Score: 1.2
Thrill Rides: The park has a small collection of thrilling rollercoaster. The highlight attraction and main draw is Boulder Dash, a fantastic terrain wooden coaster. This ride was absolutely fantastic, with great pops of airtime, a fun first drop, and fantastic scenery. A highlight for me for this ride was that since it is a terrain coaster going up and down and along the side of a mountain, you are never really that far off the ground. Thus people who are normally terrified of coaster due to hights can enjoy this ride. This was the situation with my wife, she was able to ride this ride multiple times and loved it, when usually she is absolutely terrified of coasters. Ive seen some people say its really rough, and while there were some rough spots, the new tracking has done it wonders. It rides extremely well in the front. This coaster has overtaken Pheonix as my number 1 wooden coaster. The park also boasts Wildcat, a historic wooden coaster which was just retracked as well and runs very smooth. Phobia Phear coaster is a triple launched Premier Sky Rocket II. The ride is short but fun, the lap bar only restraints make the only inversion awesome. I literally felt like I was going to fall out of my seat. Lastly, Zoomerang is a boomerang which has a bunch of inversions. A fun ride with a fantastic paint job. There was also a great drop tower and a few big water slides in the water park. Overall, the park boasts a small but fun collections of coasters backed by the world class boulder dash. Score: 1.4
Family Rides: There are quite a few family rides and the water park, included with entry, is the perfect spot for families to enjoy on a hot summer day. There is one shooting dark ride that is okay, nothing special, an old carrousel which was fun, and a whole kiddie section. Taken together there is fun rides for the whole family, with the water park inflating this score a bit. Score: 1.5
Non-Ride Entertainment & Food: The park has a some carnival games and a small arcade. The food was pretty good. There is a section with meet n greets for kids and different characters. They also have a floating beach for small concerts during the summer. While there isnt an abundance of non-ride entertainment, they put at least some effort here. Score: 1.1
Cost Value: We paid a total of 118 dollars for two entry tickets, which included one free meal each, and parking. This wasnt a bad deal for everything included. The meal was a full entre with a large side, drink and cookies. Entry also included entry into the parks waterpark which was a decent size. The park has good value, I wouldnt definitely go again without worrying too much about the cost. Score: 1.3
Overall Score: 6.5
As I was leaving the park, I was thinking about my experience and I noticed that I was perfectly “whelmed”. The park does everything well. It doesnt have any obvious pitfalls but it also doesnt have anything which makes it absolutely world class (except for Boulder Dash). It is a perfectly fun park to go to for a day trip. I think the score fits very well to reflect this.
“Basketball Extreme” 🤣 Thanks for the pics and review. Sounds like a nice day trip, like you said, especially for the price.
Yeah, its definitely a park to hit if you’re in the north east! If you consider yourself a rollercoaster enthusiast, then it is a bucketlist park to hit just to ride Boulder Dash!
Indeed. And would welcome the cooler temps! Or at least less humidity.
Theming wise, I love the antique autos ride, and the pirate ship area!
You can easily make a weekend out of Lake Compounce if you also do Quassy, and some other theme-park-adjacent attractions in the area, like the Carousel Museum and the Witch's Dungeon wax museum (both of which are amazing)
Heyo Theme Park fans! My wife and I are planning our next day trip to a park. Lake Compounce is about 2 hours and 15 min away while Playland is about an hour and fifteen away. I love coasters/theming/dark rides. My wife loves theming/dark rides/calmer flat rides/old classic parks and history. Which park would be better for us to visit next, Rye Playland lr Lake Compounce? It would just be a day trip to either park, we do not want to spend a night.
Lake Compounce is historically significant as being one of the oldest parks in the US and has an awesome wooden roller coaster and also a good mix of classic flat rides as well. At one point in time they used to include beverages with admission, however I do not know if this is still the case.
Also Rye Playland is closer to NYC so traffic may be more of a factor, but maybe not if you are from the New York Area and used to that sort of thing.
Lake Compounce and its not close
Rye Playland is going through a transition with management, so I’m not sure how much of the park is open right now - I would check the web site to see in advance if you are considering going, but for now it’s mostly kiddie rides open.
Lake Compounce is probably the better choice although there’s not as much theming to it - but they do have a dark ride and the car ride is cute there.
I have a lot of affection for Rye Playland, but this is a no brainer. Go to Lake Compounce. Lots of history, lots of charming rides and beauty, the best wooden roller coaster in the world
>the best wooden roller coaster in the world
Voyage isn't at Lake Compounce 🤔
haha, well we can only speak to our own experiences, and unfortunately I haven't been to Holiday World yet. It's very very high on my wish list.
Best in the world? Im excited! We were just at Knoebels last weekend, and Phoenix was phenomenal. Even Twister is a fantastic ride, so I’m excited!
If you can swing it, check moonrise calendars and go on a late evening in August with a new moon.
Boulder Dash in the true dark is terrifying.
Boulder Dash at Lake Compounce is a Bucket List coaster.
The recent reviews that mentioned rides being out of order put me off.
Anyone been out there lately and know if it's still a good visit to take kids or are they doing maintenance or something?
Was there today, all major rides were open. Phobia was running very well. Boulder Dash has a very rough section after the first drop but was hauling today, fantastic roller coaster. Zoomerang isn't my thing but wasn't unbearably rough. Wildcat has some uncomfortably rough sections, be warned about that.
Love this place, the kids can run pretty free and Boilderdash is a legit rollercoaster.
Best time to go is October. They have a huge haunted house and you can ride rides after
If I remember correctly the haunted attraction has moved and they parted ways. If I’m wrong that’s great! I really enjoyed the haunted attraction.
This is an extremely late reply, but the haunted attraction was moved to Lake Quassy. Lake Compounce does seem to be doing some type of haunted attraction this year, but it's still sad the graveyard left. That was such a fun (and pretty long!) walkthrough. Know a lot of schools usually went there for a special trip in October too.
The kids will love it. It closes at 8pm I think….just fyi
They were struggling to get some of the rides inspected and approved by the state at the beginning of the season, didn't know it was still ongoing. The rumor I heard was they lost a good chunk of maintenance staff so they focused on getting the main attractions up and approved (Boulderdash). From what it looks like on their site almost everything should be back up and running now, though
I haven’t been to that place in about 20 years. Didn’t know they installed a new roller coaster.
I remember the Wild Mouse coaster they had up there many years ago. It was smaller but every time I ride a larger coaster I am still comparing it to that one in my mind.
That thing felt like a death trap for a good 15 years. It was some of the thrill! Never knew if it was gonna be your last ride on Earth.
I used to go to Quassy all the time in middle/high school. The Wild Mouse might be the scariest coaster I've ever been on. What a deathtrap!
They added some big water slides too.
The park is currently closed for the season, but I managed to get some great shots of the empty park. Super eerie Jason Vorhees vibes, I loved it :)
Extra eerie with the well kept grass & sunshine
I bought my pinball machine from them a few years ago. Had never been there, but always saw the comercials. It's like a travelling carnival found a nice spot next to a lake and decided to stay.
Last time I went was in 7th grade but I went a lot as a kid..good times! Though it was pretty bad in the mid 90s for a while..
***I normally post these on r/Themepark but I felt this may be a better place as its much more lively here***

I was pleasantly surprised by Lake Compounce and think Herschend is the perfect company for it to thrive under. Same with Kennywood and Adventureland. Herschend acquiring that group of historic, regionally beloved, and to some a bit underwhelming/mismanaged, parks is a great move. They won’t be Dollywood or SDC but I’ll bet they’re all better off 10 years from now
Agreed. Unlike Kentucky Kingdom, those parks are already in a good spot but have tons of potential to add upgrades without having to re-do big chunks of the park or build completely new areas.
Herschend should demolish Steel Curtain and replace it with the planned RMC. Fuck the cost lol
Lake Compounce was awesome when it was privately owned by Kennywood, the last 15 or so years its declined quite a bit. I'm so Herschend has bought them up. It's my childhood home park and first job. It deserves the world.
What you said about people who are terrified of roller coasters but can still enjoy them is true for me. I get a little scared every time it's my turn to board a roller coaster train, but I try not to scream and I still enjoy the roller coaster. So for me, roller coasters always get better than I think whenever I ride them.
Will i be able to get in with the platinum splish splash membership
What's your scoring system, max of 2 points per category, x5 categories so 10 is a perfect score?
Yep! Its not perfect, and my opinion may very well be greatly different than most, but I think its just a fun way to share my thoughts
Yeah for sure, no complaint from me! Just wanted to make sure I was understanding you.
Been doing season passes there for the last eight years… The kids love this place, it's super chill and the rides are great for anyone under 14... Lake is super clean and the waterpark is a ton of fun. Food is way too expensive here but they sell beer thank God...
Plus you can take your own food/drink in as agree the food is lacking and overpriced.
You're right I should've mentioned that! We always pack sandwiches and sodas, maybe a few beers for dad...
This looks nicer than I remember as a kid. Actually thinking about taking my 5 year old.
5 is a good age. Our elementary school does a day there every summer once school is out and the kids love it.
The lines aren't long, it's not a lot of walking, the beach area is nice and the water's not deep, and it's a decent water park.
They really stepped up their game. It's still primarily for younger kids but they do have bigger rides now
It is much safer and nicer then it was 20 years ago. Definitely still for young children.
Worked for them one summer. The owner was scum. I'll never spend a nickel there.
it’s great if you have little guys.
Was just there on Sunday. The kids loved it. The wooden rollercoaster is super fun.
So I'm contemplating getting a season pass for me and the kids to an amusement park preferably one with a good water park. However, I can't quite figure out whether it would be better to get one from
My kids are 9, 7, and 5. Before I priced it out I was leaning towards Lake Compounce because that seems more their speed. However, six Flags is less expensive and it is a better amusement park.
Is there something I'm missing about Six Flags? Like are there a lot of extra costs as compared to Lake Compounce or are the lines per ride significantly longer?
For those ages, I’d skip Quassy. Quassy is great for little kids but can get stale quick for older kids.
I’d say Lake Compounce, but I think it also depends on where you live and what is more convenient. Even Quassy could be worth it if you’re super close. We’re going on our third year of season passes there. It’s only 20 minutes away so we can go any random time we feel like it.
100% Lake Compounce. After a few times they would get board with Quassy, and Six Flags can get crowed and overwhelming with kids that young. Best bet LC.
I think the attendees at Six Flags are a drag. YMMV
With kids that little I would be thinking, which place is the most family friendly
Also would think about distance
They are all in entirely different locations so I would go with whatever is closest to you.
Lake Compounce. I suggest upgrading your membership to the one with free parking, though.
Yes!
Today, I visited Lake Compounce for the first time. It’s pretty good! Not sure how soon but I’ll definitely make a point to return here in the future.
The park has a lot of charm - it reminds me of old school Hershey, particularly the front half of that park around Comet and Sooperdooperlooper. Lots of classic amusement park architecture, and so many trees. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many trees in a park. Usually I ding a park for blacktop paths, as they always make it feel hotter and they look cheap. But it didn’t bug me today, likely because of how green the park still is.
Despite plenty of visible marketing and signs billing Lake Compounce as America’s first amusement park, it doesn’t feel like stepping into the past the same way a park like Knoebel’s does. It’s a flat rate to enter the park, there are digitally posted wait times, a skip-the-line pass, meal plans, and preferred parking, just like any modern day park. I can’t help but wonder if the park would thrive more as a Knoebel’s-like, with a ticketing system, free entry, and better food vending.
The park has an impressive ride offering for its size, with a good variety of low to high thrill flats, the obligatory classics, and four major coasters. Ride placement is also consistently intelligent here. Wildcat creates quite a landscape at the park entrance, their pirate ship is positioned on top of a manmade waterfall, Phobia is at the top of the hill and visible from everywhere in the park, and Boulder Dash is almost always visible careening through the woods from guest pathways.
The employees. Uh…I saw both ends of the spectrum today. Granted it was dead and it was Tuesday, but still. F-bombs and N-bombs being dropped in front of children, complete lack of expression from food and merch, and ride operators unaware that they should be shut down due to nearby lightning. Also tried to buy a shirt but after ten minutes, gave up on waiting for an employee to show up at the cash register. But at the same time, the crews on Boulder Dash, Wildcat, and Phobia were friendly, moving at a decent pace, and very accommodating to guests.
Rides are also fully staffed and have groupers. In the era of United’s penny pinching and the Six Flags merger, that’s becoming an increasingly rare thing to see. They also haven’t torn down their Skycoaster.
Unfortunately, around 2:30, all rides went down for nearby lightning, and rain came around 3:00. I would’ve stuck around to wait it out and get some evening laps on Boulder Dash and Wildcat, but I have an advance screening of Superman tonight at 7pm and needed to get back to my hotel an hour north.
But if you’re in the area and have a spare $50 laying around, I’d recommend swinging by and checking Lake Compounce out. I’m excited to see if Herschend does anything with the place, there’s a lot of potential and a lot of things already going well for the park.
>The park has a lot of charm - it reminds me of old school Hershey
Hershey Entertainment actually owned Lake Compounce briefly in the mid-1980s!
>Boulder Dash (207) - This kicks all sorts of ass. I love how a fairly standard out-and-back layout
I'm not sure I'd call Boulder Dash a fairly standard layout by any means, but I agree it kicks all sorts of ass!
Great report, thank you.
Coaster write-ups:
Zoomerang - I didn’t get this credit. I was about to get on and the train in front of me stopped halfway through its return sequence into the station, prompting the ride op to look at it and yell “uh, what the fuck?” I did not see it open back up the following few hours. I think it’s a sign from the universe telling me to stop forcing myself onto Vekoma Boomerangs.
Phobia Phear Coaster (206) - It’s a Premier Skyrocket. The lack of comfort collars makes the barrel roll at the top a bit more fun, but a Skyrocket’s a Skyrocket. It’s a perfect fit in the park’s lineup, just not my cup of tea.
Boulder Dash (207) - This kicks all sorts of ass. I love how a fairly standard out-and-back layout is completely enhanced by the location of this coaster. Careening through the woods at high speeds while being shaken to death by wood just lives up to the hype every time. I will say, it’s got a few comically rough spots, and I hope they Titan Track more of the layout. Odd numbered seats definitely give a better ride experience. For me this ranks right next to my other favorite old school woodies (Beast and Grizzly), but I have it way behind Phoenix and the holy trinity of GCIs (Mystic, Thunderhead, and Texas Stingray). Boulder Dash is worth the price of admission and it is worth traveling to the park if you’re within a few hours.
Wildcat (208) - I was not expecting this to haul as much as it does. A vast majority of the layout has been recently retracked, and it runs smooth and fast. There are so many pops of classic, unbanked wooden ejector on this. I also love Millennium Flyer trains (turns out I might be in the minority on that?), so this was all around a great experience. They need to paint the new sections though, for my OCD’s sake. Wildcat is officially my second oldest credit (1927) after Thunderhawk at Dorney (1924). Pretty neat.
Uhhh, story-time because why not:
I ended up riding Wildcat with a boy, maybe ten years old? He was a bit nervous, said it was his first big coaster, and started asking me a bunch of questions about it. I explained to him that Wildcat would be my 208th coaster, that they’d recently rebuilt some of it, and that the trains were brand new and safe.
“You’ve been on 200 roller coasters?”
“Yeah, I travel the country and ride as many as I can.”
“Do you do that as a job?”
“I wish, but no - I’m a middle school math teacher. I’m on summer break.”
“What’s your favorite roller coaster?”
“Steel Vengeance, it’s at a park in Ohio.”
“Have you been on Kingda Ka?”
“I rode it on its last day before they tore it down.”
“IT’S GONE???”
“Yeah man, there’s just a field of gravel there now.”
Anyway, I convinced him to put his hands in the air for the entire ride. When we hit the brake run, he said he loved it. When we got off, we fist bumped and he said “teach on, sir.”
So yeah, I might have helped forge a new enthusiast today.
The park feels a little like Hershey because when it was rebuilt in the 1980s Hershey owned it. It was Hershey Lake Compounce. I can still hear the motto “come back to Hershey Lake Compounce - it’s America.” I worked there two summers.
Boulder Dash gets even faster later in the evening. It's also one of the best night rides too
next time i come here, i’ll definitely make it the back half of the day instead of the front half. boulder dash even faster sounds like god mode
Nothing like the front car at night with no moonlight on the lake. All you see is blackness and you have no idea where you're going. All you know is you’re going very very fast. It’s worth the extra wait
Great TR. For Boulder Dash, I know the titan track really exists not only to smooth out the ride but also lets them not have to worry about track maintenance since a lot of the track is hard to get to however I really hope they don’t titan track all of it. It is making the ride run extremely fast consistently rn but I pray they keep as much wood as they can. The out of control feeling is the reason why this ride was considered one of the best in the world. My rides last year really put it over the top.
I was about to get semantic with respect to Knott's Berry Farm, but soon realized LP is "Amusement Park" while KBF is "Theme Park".

Mystic. Lovely town to walk around in, great shops and restaurants. Quintessential Connecticut.
And good proximity to other cute spots
Based
Stonington Borough. It’s a very cute, coastal area with shops, restaurants, etc. and right on the water.
Your post is too vague. Some people will probably say restaurants, state parks, town/city parks, museums, and so on.
Everything you just said is valid
Kent falls park, mystic, and Pepe’s/Sallys are all valid responses
Bridgeport
Anywhere unique or cool like a park, museum, restaurant, or a tourist attraction. Also recommend me a city or town that I should visit. What is one place in CT that is worth visiting?
I would recommend *to you a day trip to Mystic. Be sure to seek out some great seafood while you are there. It has a lot to offer depending on what you enjoy doing. It's a lovely town to just walk around.
Mystic Aquarium!
Agree, and the pub in the Captain Daniel Packer Inne has the best New England clam chowder I've ever had in my life!
I agree with this but it’s become a tourist trap unfortunately
Going by your username, you may really enjoy Book Barn in Niantic. And if you’re in the area, I would definitely recommend Fox Farm Brewery.
Thanks for your encouragement. I know a Book Barn or two in Niantic and then there's another Book Barn in Bethany I swear. I've been to that popular one in Niantic but not in Bethany.
Cato corner farm for cheese or Prium Vineyard are both a short drive away.
For a combined cool town/cool site trip, visit Gillette Castle State Park and then hop on the little river ferry to visit Chester.
Gillette Castle was the home of William Gillette (the actor who essentially created the stage appearance of Sherlock Holmes) and features some cool architecture, plus trails that follow the path of a narrow gauge railroad he had on the property (including through a tunnel). If river conditions are right, you might also be able to spot what’s left of a houseboat he owned that was destroyed in a fire.
Chester has a beautiful little downtown with some nice shops, restaurants, and a good brewery.
Yale Peabody museum, art gallery, and/or library. Then invite yiur Reddit friends for Pizza 🍕 at Sally's, Pepes or Modern.
You’re getting to the time of year when heading up to Kent Falls, taking a trip to the brewery and then heading downtown would be a pretty fun day. Fife and Drum is a lunch spot I like.
