TL;DR
Budget-Friendly Arcade Sticks
For those looking to get into arcade sticks without breaking the bank, the Mayflash F300 and F500 are frequently recommended. The F300 is noted for being a solid entry-level stick at around $60 [2:1], while the F500 offers a bit more robustness and is easy to modify if you decide to upgrade later
[4:1]. Both models provide a decent starting point for newcomers to fighting games.
Mid-Range Options
The 8BitDo arcade stick is another popular choice for those who want a balance between cost and performance. It's praised for its affordability and serves as a good introductory stick [1:1]. However, some users have noted that its smaller chassis might cause wrist discomfort over extended play sessions
[1:2]. The Qanba Drone is also recommended for its ease of modding and solid build quality
[3:4].
High-End Recommendations
For players willing to invest more in their gaming experience, the Qanba Obsidian and Victrix Pro FS are highly regarded. These sticks come with high-quality Sanwa parts and offer excellent performance right out of the box [3:2]. The Hori RAP 4 is another option that combines size and modding capability, making it a favorite among enthusiasts
[1:4].
Customization and Modding
Many users emphasize the importance of customization and modding when choosing an arcade stick. Building your own stick with a Brook board or upgrading existing components can tailor the stick to your preferences [3:3]. This flexibility allows players to enhance their setup over time, ensuring long-term satisfaction with their purchase.
Personal Experiences and Transition
Transitioning from traditional controllers to arcade sticks can be challenging but rewarding. Many players initially struggled but found the durability and modding potential of arcade sticks to be worth the effort [5:1]. Exposure to arcades and classic gaming experiences often influences players' preferences for arcade sticks, highlighting the nostalgic appeal of this controller type
[5:9].
I’ve been looking into getting an arcade sticks that are comfortable and good to use. While I plan on using it for fighting games, I do want to try to use it for other games.
You can’t go wrong with the 8bitdo stick. If you end up getting into sticks you can upgrade to something else.
What makes them good?
I have the 8bitDo as my extra stick, like others have said, it’s pretty good for the price point. The only problem is that the chassis is kind of small and for me, that caused my wrists to get cramped over time. I wouldn’t have known that it’s the stick’s fault if not for also having other larger chassis arcade sticks to compare it to. Your mileage may vary!
Price point and okay buttons. And if you aren't used to sticks. It's a good stick to get used to or at least see if you even like it.
Are ju looking at leverless or stick?
I like hori rap 4 the size is good for me if I wanna upgrade it then it’s easy to mod but depends on your budget
I love my qanba silent q3!
I’m going to use arcade fight stick for fighting games like street fighter, Marvel vs Capcom, Capcom vs Snk, etc. I need help finding the decent one that’s under $100.
May flash F500, just picked one up and it’s super solid
you might find a nacon daija ps4/pc used around that price but you gotta really look they go fir a bit higher
MayFlash f500 is your best bet I'm pretty sure its 80$.
Think about building one, it is the best bang for your buck and all you need to know is simple wiring and use of tools like drills and saws........
Mayflash F300 is a solid option for about $60 last time I checked. If you're interested in leverless, almost all of the Haute42 fight pads are under $100.
Hey all,
I've played fighters for quite a while, bought a 6-button mad catz stick bout 3 years ago. Works perfectly well for SF or UMVC3, but games like Tekken and some others would benefit from having 8 buttons. I also want something I can use cross platform, not just on PS4.
So in short, looking for recommendations on 8 button PC/PS4 arcade sticks.
The Obsidian & Victrix are fantastic. I converted the Victrix to a Crown 309 MJ st-35 with a jlf adaptor and fancy bat top + cute sanwa buttons.
The stock sticks in both are amazing though.
Edit: the vixtrix stock stick is very lightweight and comfortable. Playing on air. The obsidian is much stiffer but in no way a bad way. Loved both. Oh and both come with pure sanwa parts.
I gotta ask, 8 buttons for tekken? Boi what you mapping in tekken that needs 8 lol
When I play Tekken on pad I map 1+2,3+4,1+3 and 2+4 to the shoulder buttons. I might do something similar on stick if I started on pad.
OP, I would by a Qanba. Out of all the sticks I've had, I've liked the stuff you can't change on theirs the most. Buttons and levers can be replaced and upgraded, case shape, layout cannot.
Really though, you should just buy a Brook board and make your own, it's not that hard, and you'll get exactly what you want.
I guess I just like having the option lol
Hori sticks with revised hayabusa parts are pretty solid. If you're handy, you could get a qanba drone and swap out all the parts for sanwa/semitsu/haybusa parts.
You can also find the old madcatz TES+ sticks on amazon in that budget. Shadoloo one is currently 125
Qanba Obsidian and Hori fighting edge are good sticks imo.
Hey last year I didn't know SHITTTTT. My obsidian eventually started having an issue because I was rough on the stick. Popped it open to fix up and fell in love with modding!
This question is answered daily on r/fightsticks, lots of good advice over there. Basically though the thing that will determine the most is how much you are .willing to spend
It’s full of hit boxes though, and that’s the one thing I’m gonna old-man-yelling-at-clouds about, fuck those buttons for directions using abominations
haa, yeah. I've learnt to ignore them respectfully. I grew up riding a skateboard and had to learn to let rollerbladers use the skatepark without wanting to kill them.
Ill look there too thanks
Budget?
Hey guys I've made a post in the past regarding leverless controllers but that was for my brother.
I was looking to get into a arcade stick purely because I want to. I honestly don't think it'll make my gameplay magically better.
But there so expensive.
Are there good budget options like the 8 bit do arcade stick. Within 60-160 usd.
Thank you in advance who comment.
There's a new Qanba stick that uses the OG Obsidian case, but it's only for PC.
https://qanba.vip/products/qanba-q3-obsidian-arcade-multifunction-edition-for-pc
I found it cheaper on Aliexpress if that helps you
This is helpful thank you.
Either of those Mayflash recommendations would be good. Would you be playing on PC or console?
PC shifting to PC
I agree with everyone here, but Mayflash F500. F700 if you can swing it, but if not, F500 for sure. Can't go wrong with it.
Mayflash f500 or f700.
mayflash f500 is perfect honestly. great stock stick and really easy to modify later down the line if you want
Just asking for those who are relatively new to fighting games in general, how would you get yourself/experience an Arcade Stick and think that "oh yeah this is the controller type I want to use". Like what was your first exposure to them? Because so far the two easiest, most accessible controllers are pads followed by keyboard (which leads to leverless), and you can't really get a good grasp on arcade sticks as easily as the good ones can cost hundreds of dollars
Arcades. I also had the NES joystick.
I had the Sega Power Clutch for the Genesis. I even used it when playing Sonic.
What brand was your NES joystick? The 2 most likely brands were Nintendo and Beeshu.
If you're a Beeshu guy, it's probably because it was right handed/ambidextrous.
It was Nintendo. It had a red ball stick cap iirc.
Because arcades were the only way to play against other players back then. Even then, Tekken was the only game I felt comfortable playing with the arcade stick.
I loved the fact that on the Tekken tag arcade cabinet you could bring in your PlayStation controller and plug it up to the cabinet. Man gaming was sooo fun man!🥹
I rocked up to an SFII arcade cabinet, and there it was.
This! And much MUCH later I was finally able to get a decent one for home use.
Grew up in arcades. It's natural for me.
I played a lot of KOF 13 back in the day. It was a destroyer of dpads and I was replacing them every 3-6 months. Finally got fed up and bought a stick for the build quality. It was a difficult transition and took me almost a year to get fully comfortable and back to where I was, but it was totally worth it. Saved a lot of money in the long run and the moddability of sticks is a huge bonus.
Hi, I want to get into SF6 more competitively, and I wanted to invest for a fight pad/fight stick controller. What's the general consensus on the most reliable or just a good arcade stick controller?
FYI leverless players are going to try to convince you that leverless is by far the best even though it has the worst tournament results of any controller. To answer your question for a good arcade controller I would say either a Victrix, Hori Fighting Stick (but swap the hayabusa stick for a Sanwa ideally), or a quanta are the most popular and well made sticks.
I personally find the Hori the best bang for your buck but like I said swap out the stick eventually for a sanwa stick (what they used in arcades and most sticks come with) it’s like a $30 part that’s takes 5 minutes to replace. But some people find the included hayabusa to be fine.
There is no magic controller type for competitive play though most players prefer leverless controllers these days (basically like an arcade stick but replaces the stick with more buttons). Haute42 is a popular maker of leverless controllers for cheap if you want to play around with them. 8Bit Do has a popular arcade stick for fairly cheap if you want to mess around with that (most people don't think its optimal outside of grapplers maybe, its mostly just muscle memory for older players). They are also releasing a wireless leverless in a few weeks if you want that option.
I know a controller isn't gonna solve my skill issues against Ken, I just think an arcade stick controller or levelers would be fun to use
Haute42 u16/t16 leverless
Stop it with the anti arcade stick nonsense. The birds who have won multiple tournaments and are both in their 20s are playing stick Uma won capcom cup on stick. Punk who has won many tournaments and evo plays pad not leverless. Tons of famous younger players who are all wining tournaments are on pad not leverless. Broski, phenom, ending walker, blaz are all on pad.
The only notable player that’s won anything big on leverless is kakeru and he plays a character that has a bunch of double tap specials and doesn’t have a dp. So like the only character that might be ideal on leverless.
If anything leverless is the worst of the 3.
I've owned a lot of controllers, and my Haute is my favorite one so far. It also helps that it's super cheap.
Whichever is accessible to you right now. If you have a PS5 for example, use the dualsense. Reagrdless of the controller, the critical factor will be the time you spend to develop muscle memory using that specific controller.
I understand that, of course, but I just want an arcade controller and don't know which is the one most use is all
I use a Haute42 leverless (M Ultra) right now but before all that, I started with DS4.
I'm not familiar with sticks but for leverless, I highly suggest Haute products because they provide the best value. For PS5 use just buy an adapter (not Brook) for like 20 USD and youre set. Leverless are more precise and are easy to carry for locals.
I'm an oldhead and idk what's the shit these days but I've been using my madcatz fightstick tourney edition ever since MVC3 and it's still holding up so that's gotta count for something. Love the weight, response, and overall look. That's my recommend. It says for 360 (lol) but I use it on PC and it's 👌🏼
And also cheap
Best: Vitrix Pro ($300), Qanba Obsidian ($200), Razer Panthera/ Razer Panthera Evo ($200), Hori Fighting Edge ($200)
Just slightly below best: Hori RAP4 ($150), Madcatz TE2 ($200)
Great for some people but usually need parts changed: Qanba drone ($70)
Not the best: Hori Fightstick mini: ($40), Pretty much any stick with a normal retail price if under 100 bucks besides the drone
To add for the Victrix Pro FS - the stick is excellent, looks nice and performs well. If you want some weight to a stick it is also heavy and will probably perform well as a blunt object. However if you plan on using it on PC it will take a lot of work and you have to figure it out yourself. I got mine working great on Steam through big picture, but it can be inconsistent at times.
Edit: also super easy to swap parts in and out.
I have an xbox, so I would recommend the Atrox instead of the Panthera (even though they're the same controller for different consoles)
The Drone is nice because you can get a new stick for ~20ish and swap it in. The buttons are less of an issue, but should still be swapped eventually. But you get a decent stick for <$100.
The other big issue though is it’s so tiny and light compared to any of the premium ones. It’s also not going to support new art work or anything - the look is the look, which doesn’t bother me but may others. .
What’s the issue with the sticks?
Pretty much this, should add Qanba Drone Evo when available, and Hori RapN (175$-ish)
Mayflash f500 is about as good as the drone for me.
f300 if you want a small one and f500 if you want a big one, then you change the parts with sanwa of the color of your choice and eventually the artwork too, for f500
they're unbeatable, compatible with every single console and still usable even with the stock parts while waiting for the sanwa parts
Adding to this: the native board of the F300 is a bit fragile and prone to overcharge in a few circumstances, but with a little elbow grease it's possible to hook it to a Brook Fighting Board instead.
I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the Mayflash F500 Elite ($120 @ Amazon). All Sanwa buttons and stick. The biggest plus for me was being able to use it on every system and PC.
120 bones? Gonna have to check that one out for sure. Can't beat that price with a stick.
Qanba By Obsidian is a great product
I'm getting into fighting games and I see a lot of cheap fighting sticks on amazon and ebay. I would like to ask from people who know about this but what's the best fighting stick currently? My budget is around $60-210. I never had any previous experience with any arcade sticks, and I'm looking to play Tekken 7 and DBFZ.
I recommend the Mayflash F300 or F500. The base models (not elite) range from $60 - $90 USD and the stock parts are perfectly serviceable for learning. Get the F300 if you're trying to save the most money, get the F500 if you need a bigger stick and want to customize your stick before upgrading to something else.
Furthermore, these sticks are super friendly to customizing with Sanwa parts. All you would need is a lever, 5 pin easy connector cable, and buttons. They're great for learning how to swap out parts and gives you a bit of experience in playing around with the internals.
Now, if you don't mind spending the extra cash I'd wholeheartedly recommend a higher quality stick but thats really only if you want to devote to playing on stick. My personal recommendation is the Razer Atrox/Panthera. The Panthera Evo isn't bad but the original is a little more quality of life for swapping parts. Only tradeoff is the artwork isn't easily changed. These sticks are a great buy if you find them around the $100 - $150 range.
Is the mayflash F500 good on pc? I was reading conflicting comments on how they perform on the pc
Mayflash f500 v2, to be exact. Not that the first one is any bad but v2 is more readily available and IIRC there's no major differences aside from a few aesthetic changes.
I second this. New to fighting games and I picked up a Mayflash F500. Great stick, I love playing and learning with it.
I bought a bunch of sticks when I got into the hobby a couple months ago. An F500 elite, Razer Panthera Evo, Qanba Obsidian Hitbox custom, Razer Panthera DBFZ edition, and I have a Hori Rap SCVI edition. Of all those sticks the Razer Panthera is the easiest to mod so it would be the best stick to buy if you want easy access to everything. The other sticks are not too difficult to mod but one button opening on a clasp means you can easily check the stick as you change parts and verify it is working.
The Razer Panthera is on sale and it's an extremely good fightstick. I purchased it and everything feels tight and responsive.
Damn, I should've waited on buying that custom one lol
The Razer Panthera Evo is on sale for $129.99 which kind of meets your budget! https://www.gamestop.com/video-games/playstation-4/accessories/controllers/products/playstation-4-panthera-evo-arcade-stick/10172295.html
How about the hori rap n hayabusa?
late reply but I bought it :D its coming in 2 days and its my first arcade stick lol
still very much a beginner in fighting games, and i do enjoy playing with controller, but curious about getting a fight stick and seeing how that feels. any suggestions on a decent fight stick? id prefer with the joystick, hitboxes im not so sure.
I got a fight stick first, but switched to leverless after. Leverless is typically better and more responsive giving more precise inputs, however I feel like stick has a cool arcade feel to it that makes it really fun.
I get better inputs with leverless
I have more fun with fight stick
Hori Alpha is also good value for the money, but I find people either love or hate the Hori parts (compared to Sanwa parts).
The may flash f500 is pretty good for the price, same goes for the Mayflash F300 (bit smaller and cheaper)
The ones i personally use are the Qanba Obsidian and Dragon
If you’re just curious and trying it out I would suggest a more budget friendly one like the Qanba Drone 2 or the Mayflash F500 Elite.
If you're on PC, I would recommend picking up a used Xbox 360 Mad Catz stick instead of dropping a bunch of money on something new.
They have Sanwa parts and will be plug-and-play with all fighting games on PC. Hit up your local game shops and places like craigslist/FB marketplace. A fair price would be like $50-$75.
I've been getting into Guilty Gear Strive and I was wondering what are some good fightsticks to get at a decent price? I'm not too concerned but I wouldn't like to spend more than 100$ unless I really have too. What would you recommend?
Under a 100 I'd say the Mayflash f500. Ideally I'd get the pro version (but that's over a 100) with Sanwa parts, since the default stick feels like shit.
In any case, you want to look at sticks that have either Sanwa parts or Hayabusa parts.
Came here to mention the f500, too. Maybe you should add that the default one can be modded. So OP could switch to Sanwa parts later.
But what's wrong with the default stick? I use it and can't really complain.
I found the default stick incredibly mushy. It's way too light and imprecise. If I were to let it go to neutral it would often input the opposite direction. So if I were to go back -> neutral I would get a forward input as well.
I switched it out with a Crown 309mj and it immediately felt better to play on. My execution got way better as well. It really felt as if the joystick was holding me back.
Are Sanwa and Hayabusa about equal in quality? I'm looking at the "HORI Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai" and it says that's it is frequently bought with "Sanwa GT-Y Octagonal Restrictor Plate for JLF Joysticks" and "Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT Original Joystick Red", are those something I should get or would the Hayabusa parts that are already a part of the Pro 4 Kai good? Also what does the restrictor plate do?
Sanwa is pretty much the standard when it comes to arcade stick parts. The HORI RAP4 comes with Hori Hayabusa parts out of the box. The difference between these 2 is that Hayabusa buttons and sticks are more sensitive/lighter than Sanwa parts, generally speaking.
You can pretty easily switch between the Hayabusa and Sanwa JLF joysticks, this does require you to open up the arcade stick first though, but that shouldn't be very hard. There's plenty of tutorials for that.
The restrictor gate restricts the path of your jooystick. Normally it's a square gate, but a lot of people prefer an octagonal gate, this makes some motion inputs easier to perform.
Here's some videos that explain more than I can in this comment:
Sanwa vs. Hayabusa vs. Seimitsu joystick and buttons comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2x1A4YytnM
Sanwa vs. Hayabusa vs. Seimitsu joystick specific comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cm_qg0NrT0Q
A video on octagonal restrictor gates: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pk967sxHsH0
Spent up to $150 and get a decent stick.
If you enter with too low a budget, it will turn you off fightsticks because of how flimsy the entry level sticks really are.
I'm on PC, but the cheap option isn't lower quality is it? I don't want to break the bank, but I also want something I'll be able to use for a bit and feel comfortable with.
The Mad Catz TE1 fightsticks were the first US introduction of mass produced high quality fightsticks. They're probably a good reason why SF4 became so huge.
Anyway, the TE comes with Sanwa parts, which are the parts most commonly found in Japanese arcades.
It’s quality and Mad Catz was the standard back in the day. The guy even said he still uses his and it’s probably over a decade old. As for comfort it’ll take awhile for you to get used to playing on stick but I prefer it over controller. My hands cramp on controller as opposed to stick where I can play for hours.
Yup, the way to go. I still use my original 360 stick after all these years and it's still plug and play with everything.
Consider giving your keyboard a try. It's pretty decent with a hitbox layout, IMO.
I'd go out and buy a snackbox micro if the prices weren't outrageous for what is basically a 12-button keyboard.
Qanba Carbon is also a good choice. $10 cheaper and a whole lot less ugly.
