TL;DR
Xbox Series X Controller
The Xbox Series X controller is frequently praised for its design, particularly the bowl-shaped D-pad which allows for easier directional inputs. This design helps in executing quick successive moves, making it a popular choice among Mortal Kombat players [1:1]. Users have noted that the clicky buttons may not be ideal for everyone, but the responsiveness of the D-pad makes it a strong contender for fighting games
[3:5],
[3:6].
Hitbox-Type Controllers
Hitbox-type controllers are mentioned as an excellent option for fighting games due to their unique layout that allows pressing multiple directions simultaneously. This feature can simplify complex inputs, such as those required for certain character moves in Mortal Kombat [1:2]. While keyboards offer similar advantages, they can be less precise due to additional keys.
Victrix Pro BFG
The Victrix Pro BFG is highlighted as a high-quality controller suitable for all types of games, including fighting games like Mortal Kombat. It offers customizable D-pads to fit different preferences, providing flexibility and comfort during gameplay [2:2]. Although it's on the pricier side, its durability and performance make it a worthwhile investment for serious gamers.
Other Considerations
While the Xbox controller is a reliable choice, some players prefer using fight sticks for a more authentic arcade experience [2:3]. Additionally, the 8bitdo M30 paired with the Brooks XB Wingman converter is another option that users have found effective
[3:8]. Ultimately, the best controller depends on personal preference and play style, so trying out different options is recommended to find the perfect fit.
I’m currently using the ps5 controller but i feel like my movement isn’t as responsive sometimes. What controller is typically regarded as the best for fighting games? I am on pc so I can use anything.
Hitbox-type controllers seem to be the clear answer. Keyboards are the same in essence, but have extra buttons to accidentally press, so are probably strictly worse by a small margin. The measurable advantage is that you can press multiple directions at the same time, which you cannot do on a joystick or controller. This comes in handy less in MK than other fighters, but it does make some inputs much easier, inputs like Shang Tsung's down back forward 1 inputs for projectiles are much easier to nail down with a ten finger input scheme. That said, whatever you like best is perfectly viable. The input advantage can be overcome with practice in almost all circumstances, and plenty of people have a near 100% input success rate with every controller available. One thing that matters a lot is that triggers with actual pulls are terrible for your input consistency, and finding a way to press a button when you would normally pull a trigger can make a huge difference. I use a Razer Raion, and I'm quite happy with it, the triggers are buttons, and there is no analog stick, and the d-pad has mechanical switches instead of wierd membrane buttons. I recommend something like if you want to try other options without a dramatic change in input scheme, the Octa Commander is similar in design but cheaper, and Battle Beaver makes custom controllers that can fix every problem normal controllers have but they are expensive.
Pad, if you want responsiveness always use Xbox controllers on windows!
usas mando inalámbrico o con cable?
There is no best in general. It’s whatever u feel is best
The series X controller is goat for MK. I didnt realize it until mine broke and I had to go back to my hold controller for a minute until I fixed my broken one.
The series X Dpad is almost bowl shaped so the edges of each direction are slightly raised compared to the middle. It makes hitting different directional outputs easier in quick succession.
Question for people who play a lot of online mortal kombat, especially MK1: what is your controller situation like? For me, I have a decent USB controller but i feel like after 30 hours my triggers just don't respond well anymore, do people just buy new controllers often, or is there a certain brand that is best? Thanks
It's expensive but try the Victrix pro BFG. After evo I see they made a new. I've had my original for 3 years. Just a solid controller for all games overall and the extra dpads fit anyone's preference for fgs when you find the one you like
usually just go for ye old reliable xbox controller, if you want a proper fighting game controller you'd want a 'fight stick'
I've been using the same two Xbox One controllers for nearly ten years now. Just gotta clean them occasionally.
nice, do you have bluetooth or wired? i have a bluetooth one i might use but idk if the latency matters much
I've tried both modes (all Xbox pads have USB, but only the newer ones support Bluetooth) and honestly couldn't feel any difference.
I HAVE A QUESTION....because this site won't let me create a subject....apparently because I'm new, which makes about as much sense as having ur asshole located on the crown of ur head.....
Just got this game from ps plus....and I thought I was going to enjoy it until....any time I get anywhere....on a single player tower, mind u....I get about halfway thru and get the message "you are not connected to the MK1 servers". And I have to start over. And start over. And start over again......What gives? All my other games are fine. My internet is fast. This is an issue that should be solved DAY 1, and to my understanding this game is nearly 2 YEARS OLD. WTF?
I don't play fighters too much, especially online, but I can't fathom how folks play it on regular gamepads... My hands get really sore quick, and moves feel very inaccurate with either stick or D-pad, also hard to use. Face buttons are positioned in diamond form, so quickly inputing up/down left right is pretty hard with small windows. On top of uncomfortable use (for me at least), pads get ruined real fast with fighting games.
I play on keyboard, super easy, precise inputs and you really don't get tired even after playing for hours. Your fingers already lay on each key and just need dextreity to input fast.
But ideal input method would be Fight Sticks. Buttons are in a row, perfectly positioned and are big, so you can never miss. Stick is very comfortable to hold and move, not just with 1 finger. Can do super precise directional inputs. I'd never understand anyone who plays fighting games competitively, especially one like MK, which is very old school in input and mechanics, and not just buy themselves Fight Sticks. They are also durable as hell, especially better ones.
Best controller for Mortal Kombat (best d-pad controller)
Series X controller.
Is that the same as the Series S one? I got one of those, but I want a second one for MK1 to play friends and my brother
should be
Agreed.
Personally got the 8bit duo M30 with the brooks xb wingman converter.
Well it depends. If you wanna wake up your neighbour in the middle of the night then series x controller is a way to go. But I personally think that playing fighting games on a clicky dpad is terrible.
I think the mushy pads are worse because you miss inputs. But man the xbox buttons are clicky
I now have to one that came with my Series S
But when Mortal Kombat I comes I want to be a second controller to play on couch with friends and my brother.
But I'm not sure which want to get
Maximilian Dood is great
I know dude!
Fucking love max
Hes cool
This was very interesting, thank you
Does anyone know how to buy the dpad he's talking about? I went to the site but could only find how to buy entire controller. If anyone knows, please let me know!
So recently I’ve been trying to get back into ultimate after not playing for 2 years and using my old GameCube controller that I got with my switch is not the same as it used to be. The plastic is quite cheap and the stick isn’t very good either.
I should add that I do main K. Rool but I like to play a variety of other characters in the roster too.
If any of you guys have good controllers you use that match your play styles or just work well in general and wanna let me know in the comments that’d be much appreciated.
Been enjoying the GC Ultimate from HHL
Does anybody know where to buy rounded actuators for this type of lever ? Thanks in advance.
I assume the placement/spacing of the switches means round actuators wouldn’t function properly. I’ve never seen a Happ or IL style lever without a square actuator.
Thanks for replying but it is hard to make 4 axes combos with nightwolf using the square actuators. Also have an 8Bitdo arcade stick with rounded gate and it’s easier to do everything
I'm not really a connoisseur of Mortal Kombat, but the ports seem to closely match hardware capabilities.
In its defense MKII for the Gameboy is the BEST on that system by a mile.
I can zone out with that game just like Tetris/Dr. Mario and kill time.
I agree with this, absolutely. The MK2 version on Game Boy even includes the secret Jade fight, complete with a skull background that is missing from the Game Gear port. Killer Instinct isn't half bad either, which is surprising for the GB.
For me it was SNES. As a kid I had both systems and it just felt closer to the arcade for me.
It was also mind blowing at the time to see Nintendo allow them to make the game uncensored.
I did find the SNES controllers a bit more responsive as well compared to the 6 button Genesis.
Conversely, I feel like the megadrive/genesis ports of both Mortal Kombat 2 and Street Fighter 2 were overlooked, both played fine if you had the 6 button pad, but Mortal Kombat 2's genesis soundtrack is the definitive MK2 soundtrack to me, much like MK1, I just love how funky and bassy the OST arrangements were.
Yeah, the composer of the MD MK1/2 versions was a genius (I forgot his name). He also scored lots of other MD games.
Probably the best non cd option after the 32x. Also the second easiest after the Genesis version in the US.
Me too, so many hours spent with the 2 player 4 on 4 mode activated when holding L and R and start at the menu.
32x. the load times on the Saturn take it out of the lead
There's even a restoration mod ROM for it that adds what's missing from the arcade. A truly great port that plays very well with a 6-Buttons controller.
There's also a modded rom to be more arcade accurate. I'm able to play the light version on an everdrive but there's like a 70meg version with better audio for emulators or better flash carts.
Technically Mortal Kombat 2 - 32X Ultimate Edition BUT since it's 2024 - the best version you can play is Mortal Kombat 2 Plus which is an Arcade QoL romhack
The home ports strive to be the like the Arcade so an Arcade ROM Hack > Any home Port
You could also argue there are M.U.G.E.N. games like Mortal Kombat II Remix but those aren't exactly authentic and more involved to setup and play
You could also argue a SNES MSU-1 version which would have better sound effects than the 32X IMHO but it's all really subjective
im trying to get competitive and i need the perfect controller so which is the best controller
I just got the hori fighting commander for xbox yesterday because I've had buttons break on 2 original xbox controllers already and it's really the only controller i've heard people recommend.
I've only played a couple hours w/ hit, but here are my thoughts:
The sensitivity of the controller seems much more accurate than the original xbox controller. By that I mean if you tap a button quickly, it's only going to register for that very short time. I noticed that i had to slow down my dash cancels in combos because the micro forward press i was doing for something like F3 was going by too quickly. On the other side, this makes short hops insanely easy, so much so I was able to start using them in my play which i hadn't bothered trying since april because the short hop felt so finicky on a normal controller.
The form factor of the controller is atrocious. It feels like an old SNES controller w/ no palm grips to firmly hold the controller w/o over gripping. This is so annoying i'm actively trying to figure out how i could add on grips to make the controller feel better. I've noticed that my left thumb sits higher on the d-pad due to the small grip and this results in sloppy back-forward moves going from having some errant down presses to having errant up presses which screws up your whiffs way worse. It's also much lighter than a normal xbox controller which could be a plus or it could just feel cheap to you.
This pad suffers from the same issue as standard xbox and ps4... non-discrete d-pad buttons. Press right a bit too hard at an angle and it's going to throw in an up or down press as well cuz it's 1 piece of plastic balanced on a point in the center. How they can call this a fighting controller and not have discrete d-pad buttons is baffling to me. This was the one feature i wanted, but in my limited research, the only solution i've found for discrete d pads is getting a battle beavers mod on a ps4 controller.
The controller has no sticks which means you can't use any modifiers in ToT, this is part the controllers fault because you can remap buttons, but not to stick options. This is also NRS's fault for not providing configuration options for the modifier buttons (people that use hitboxes have been asking for this since april).
You can remap buttons on the controller which is... whatever. You can do that through xbox system settings already and the only remapping i did was to "un-break" the controllers default layout which moves RT & RB to the face button, LT & LB to the RT & RB position(?!?!) and i think left stick button and right stick button to the LT & LB position... it's a mess and MK11 doesn't benefit from it at all in my opinion. The hori fight command for ps4 has a rapid-fire/auto-press feature instead of button remapping and I'd much rather have that than this one's remap feature which is borderline worthless on the xbox system.
I've already spewed more info than you probably want so I'll say that so far i think the controller has great response, but if it weren't for the fact that xbox controllers apparently aren't constructed to survive fighting games, i'd just stick w/ a normal xbox controller. For me the form factor really ruins this controller so if i can't find a way to make it feel better, I might return it. Happy to answer and specific questions if you have them tho. Good luck on the search for a good controller! Also remember that good controller != competitive player, many of the pros use regular ps4 and xbox pads.
I prefer Nintendo 64 controller
It's depend of your favorites. So... usually I try differents models in offline store, after this can order only which are better for me XD
Preferably an Xbox controller
Huge if true
In my opinion the hitbox is the absolute optimal controller for fighting games.
So have had a ton of leverless controllers cheap and expensive. Also main with a stock Mayflash F500 Elite with a lever.
I feel best bang for buck leverless is Haute42 C16s. Been using it for 2xKO and button placement takes a few matches to rewire your muscle memory, but it almost feels like this controller was made for this game.
I use an 8bitdo Xbox/PC leverless. It's my first ever, after not playing any FGs for probably 10 years. It's really, really great, and I don't think I can ever go back to a stick.
So I ordered that one but returned and didn’t try it bc I ordered this. But I do love the pill placements on the 8bit do one. I love 8 bit dos stuffs.
I really like to so far, my only grip with them is that the far right pill button is a little too downward. I use it for DI and have trained myself to move my ring finger to move over to hit the upper right button on other controllers, because it is a little easier than commanding my pinky to bend itself. They chose to make the button symmetrical with the left side one and it does look nice, but the point of a pill button is to be the mid point of the standard 2 right buttons imo, and right now it is basically just positioned like a lower one that goes even further down. Probably just a personal thing for me. Getting used to just using my pinky would probably be optimal anyways, where it is very ergonomic.
I noticed this too I almost wish they moved the left pill to above the top row on the right and move the right pill up closed to it like how 8bit do does. I miss hit left direction for that pill, so set it to parry so worse case I’m dodging.
yoo instead of bending your pinky try straightening it out and using the bottom or side of it
I have a Mavercade 04MX which this one was modeled after, and it's honestly the best. Super comfortable to use with the split layout too. This one just needs a little more split, but I'm sure it's better than standard layout. Great product. DOIO has one too. It feels super intuitive in my hands.
Need to check this out
Can you map either bottom pill to a different button so you can have jump on left bottom bill and dash on right bottom?
You can mine are jump and then dash
Nice, I might get the C16-S then. Have you tried the Duelpad Zen before? That one also looks great value-wise
C16S is quite awesome. I'm not buying any new controllers for a long time. Only problem now is I can't decide what art I want to put in it.
Also can you change the bottoms blue led light!?
Im using MKX to try and learn fighting games. Unstoppable Jason is what im maining and I have asked this question before on steam forums but they seem to be ignoring me or inactive.
I was using a DS4 but the bluetooth cable kept disconnecting which is a fault of the controller itself. I was then recommended to use a Xbone controller but I seem to keep messing shit up. When I try to back forward a as Jason he either just stands there and kicks or jumps. When I want to do the choke grab Jason does corpse throw instead and this really ruins my combos.
Am I just bad or is the d-pad of my Xbone faulty?
Or am I holding the controller wrong? Im holding it like I do every other game aka using my left thumb for dpad and right thumb for buttons.
I dont know if I should get a fight pad or stick because id also want to use the controller for non-fighting games as well like dark souls
They mainly use PS4 controllers at tournaments.
Really? I have heard that the d-pad on DS4 is really bad, is that an overstatement or just a plain lie
The D Pad on ps4 is bigger and is easier to use because you don't have to reach your thumb over/past the left analog stick
It’s the competition controller for all NRS games and most fighting games in general. The exception being using fight sticks. I personally think MK is best with the PS4 stick but that’s just me. I would say someone lied or is an Xbox fanboy or a fight stick loyalist.
best controllers for mortal kombat 2
Key Considerations for Controllers:
Compatibility: Ensure the controller is compatible with the platform you’re using (e.g., arcade, console, or PC).
Button Layout: Look for controllers that have a layout similar to the original arcade setup for a more authentic experience.
Responsiveness: Choose controllers known for their quick response times, as timing is crucial in fighting games like Mortal Kombat 2.
Comfort: Opt for a controller that feels comfortable in your hands, especially for extended gaming sessions.
Durability: Consider controllers that are built to withstand heavy use, as fighting games often require rapid button presses.
Recommendations:
Arcade Stick: If you're looking for the most authentic experience, an arcade stick (like the Hori Real Arcade Pro or the Mad Catz TE) is ideal. They replicate the arcade feel and provide precise control.
Xbox One/Series X Controller: Known for its ergonomic design and responsiveness, this controller is a great choice for console players.
PlayStation DualShock 4/5: These controllers are also highly responsive and comfortable, making them suitable for Mortal Kombat 2 on PlayStation platforms.
8BitDo SN30 Pro: This versatile controller works across multiple platforms and has a retro design that fits well with classic games.
Takeaway: For the best experience, consider using an arcade stick if you want the most authentic feel, but a modern console controller will also serve you well if you prefer comfort and versatility.
