TL;DR
Arcade Sticks vs. Game Pads
Arcade sticks are a classic choice for fighting games like Street Fighter 2. Many players appreciate the tactile feedback and precision they offer. The Razer Kitsune Cammy Edition is praised for its design and feel [4:1]
[4:5]. However, arcade sticks can be expensive, and some players prefer game pads for their familiarity and ease of use
[2:5].
Game Pads
For those who prefer game pads, the DualShock 4 is a popular option among pro players [5:2]
[5:6]. The Hori Fighting Commander is another recommended choice, offering a comfortable D-pad and all six buttons on the face for easy access
[5:4]. The Razer Raion is specifically designed for fighting games and is worth considering
[5:3].
Leverless Controllers
Leverless controllers, such as the Hitbox, replace the joystick with directional buttons. They are favored by some players for their precision and speed [1:4]
[2:9]. Transitioning from traditional controllers to leverless ones may require some adjustment, but they can offer advantages in input speed and accuracy
[2:2].
Alternative Options
Some players opt for unconventional methods, such as using a keyboard or even a Nintendo Power Glove [1:2]
[2:8]. While these options might not be suitable for everyone, they highlight the diverse preferences within the fighting game community.
Personal Comfort and Style
Ultimately, the best controller for Street Fighter 2 depends on individual comfort and play style. It's important to try different options and find what feels most natural for you [2:11]. Whether you prefer the classic arcade stick, a game pad, or a leverless controller, the key is to choose one that enhances your gameplay experience.
Keyboard for me. I have multiple pads and even a stick but I tried keyboard for fun and it kind of stick with me.
I have literally the same one lol.
I had switched to Sanwa silent buttons for a couple years and although great, I recently switched back to the originals and man they feel satisfying to press.
I am thinking of swapping the stick now though.
Hayabusas ruined me too lol. It's a crime that Hori doesn't just, you know, sell them.
my mechanical keyboard - sucks I won't ever be able to compete in tournaments tho.
Seems like it would be easy to transition to a leverless controller like hitbox if you wanted to
My monoprice dark matter arcade stick
That’s what I got
Xbox Elite 2 Core Edition, you can set the R2/L2 buttons to instant input, not pushing those buttons alle the through, and replaced the dpad with a golden cross, which looks fantastic, haven’t had any wrong directional input since then, but I’m still having it wired for less input lag and sudden wireless disconnects that sometimes just happen lol
So I recently got strive and it looks awesome but I’ve been using a Nintendo switch pro controller and the d-pad on it is fucking awful and mushy so I just get random inputs sometimes does anyone have a good alternative that I can buy (preferably cheap)? I don’t really think I want an arcade stick as that might mess up my muscle memory as I’ve been using controllers for forever but if anyone has any suggestions I’d really appreciate it :)
There is no "best controller" for fighing games. I play on hitbox and hate fight sticks, I have a friend who swears by fight sticks and hates hitbox. Before hitbox, I played on pad. It's going to come down to what is most comfortable for you. You may need to try a few hour before finding the one best for you
Agreed. I also prefer hitbox, One of my friends sticks to standard console controllers (mostly xbox series x), the other one was playing on several controllers until he decided that keyboard works best for him. Dash macro and few other solutions made this game accessible on every controller.
What’s a hitbox? Never heard of it…
Leveeless controller. Instead of having a stick for your directions, it's 4 buttons
As counter productive your answer was to the question, I agree. Just play wherever you feel most comfortable.
Hori makes fight pads, the Fighting Commander controllers are slightly stripped down for fighting games.
there's also a ps4/5 shaped one from Razer called Raion Fightpad
both under 90$ and the Hori pad is less than 50$
Raion has an issue with its dpad pivot, but if you fix it, it is extremely good. You can get a refurbished Raion for around $30 with no trouble these days. I figure a lot of people returned them assuming they were broken, because honestly the factory version is terrible
I'm using the fight commander right now and I’m enjoying it; especially for the price. The big D-Pad is hard though so expect your thumb to be sore and callous in the first couple weeks.
Eventually I plan to switch to a Hitbox though because I have permanent skiers thumb and pad makes me sore if I’m playing for too long
Since you seemed curious in your last sentence, here’s the pitch from Stick Land: I personally opt for arcade stick because I find them more comfortable (idk Playing on pad just kills my thumbs, and I grew up a pc gamer instead of console). But if you’re used to pad, no real reason to switch to stick other than curiosity. IF you ever want to try arcade stick out, Mayflash sticks aren’t ridiculously expensive, can be used for multiple platforms, and can be upgraded with better parts later if you end up liking the feel. The Mayflash sticks are kinda ugly though lol
I mostly just use the dual shock 4.
The answer is obviously the Nintendo Power Glove. Come on people...
Hi :) I don’t know much about street fighter but my boyfriend is obsessed with the game. I want to get him a nice controller pad for his birthday, are there any really good ones? Or any cool gift ideas? Thanks! He plays on PC.
There's three primary types of controllers: standard controller pad like what you use to play anything else (think Playstation or XBox controller), the classic style arcade stick, and leverless which replaces the arcade stick with directional buttons.
An example of each below. I'm not recommending these specific ones, but trying to show what you might be looking for in each:
Once you decide which one you're looking for, you might want to head over to r/fightstick for more advice. Be sure to include your budget. Despite sub's name, they discuss all fighting game controllers.
i use the 8bitdo Sega Saturn controller
This is it right here. Those floating d-pads are amazing for games like SF.
smooth like butter
What does he play with currently? I think that’s the most important thing to know before any recommendations
My recommendation is to not do this, unfortunately. It's a lot like gifting a woodworker a new drill. He probably already has what he wants and if he wants an upgrade it's targeting a specific feature. You would need more information to pull this off.
Not that your thoughtfulness is lost in me. It's a very nice thought, it's just a lot to bite off and chew.
My first fight stick. Got it off Gamestop for $250, felt like a good deal, especially because I was considering a snackbox micro which was only about $50 cheaper. This box is beautiful and feels great!
I ordered mine as soon as possible it was available online years ago, still functioning I love this hitbox
I want this so bad, but it’s impossible to get in EU without paying excessive import costs.
It looks very good and well designed.
Feels and looks better in person too 🤤 hope you can get one in the future
Was there a deal on it? Good find!
Yeah it was on sale on GameStop website brand new
Hooooly shit, looks awesome!
Basically the title. I’ve been recommended the HORI Fighting Commander game pad and was wondering if that was better than a DualShock 4.
Only pro pad players i have seen NOT using the DS4 are Smug (Xbox 360), Snakeeyez (either Madkatz Fight pad or Hori FC, not sure) and Luffy (PS1) Everyone else seems pretty content with the DS4.
There are so many fight pads out there now, the latest is "Razer Raion" which is a pad specifically made for fighting games. DS4 is fine though.
I love the fc. Dpad is much more comfortable than the ds4 imo and having all six buttons on the face is amazing. Super easy to throw/vskill/vtrigger without binds too
Thanks but if I’m being honest I have no idea what vskill and vtrigger is yet haha. I’m really new to this game.
Oh in that case you’re overthinking it then man, if you’ve got a ds4 just use that while you learn before you go dropping cash on a pad you might not even like
i use ds4 it's great.
I use a Ps2 controller, works great if you don't like charge or negative edge
Hey all, I got SF6 on switch and am using both the joy on for handheld and the pro controller for Docked mode. I am interested in getting a fight stick or pad that would work with the switch 2. What are all my switch people using in terms of fight pads?
Bonus points if it works on PC too.
The 8bit do arcade stick works ok (one intended for switch and windows looks like a nes console), but I had to update firmware on mine, not sure if new bought ones come with the switch 2 firmware by default
I plugged my Haute42 S16 and T16 in in Switch mode and they worked no problem, didn't even need a firmware update. Now I just need to double-dip for SF6.
I was going to buy it on PC too at some point but apparently the World story mode doesn’t carry over so it seems a bit pointless since the online is pretty good on switch.
Yup, this is my main sticking point. I want all the costume 2's so I'd be playing World Tour again if I got it, including getting all the masters to 100 and that's a lotta grinding.
8bitdo M30 for me.
I am a fighting game fan with a switch and want to get good at street fighter 2. Unfortunately controllers are not clicking for me with persise inputs needed. I need help finding a budget fight stick that is switch compatible or a kit where you make the frame yourself. Ideally usb.
You can make your own fight stick with these following methods
Encoder pcb board
Buttons and joystick kit
Then you'll need an enclosure / housing
Hori Rap V is compatible with switch. I always use this one for my switch.
Both hori rap or the mayflashes are great sticks and fun to customise at a later date so all great investments.
Playing with stick is just more fun
Mayflash f500/f700 are low price and work with switch. Good sticks which are easily upgradeable
Failing this you can get a mayflash magic ns adapter and use any existing stick/ controller with your switch.
If you want to make a stick. Cheapest pcb option is no doubt a raspberry pico using gp2040 ce. Literally only costs a couple pounds.
Hey, i want to share my thoughts on many controllers i have ever tested in the recent past.
Also it would be helpful for newcomers, beginners.
Dualshock 4
Dualsense 5
Fighting Commander 4
Powera Fusion Fighting pad
Razer Raion
8bitdo Pro 2
Xbox controller
Others
I also tested 8bitdo M30 / SFC30, they are too small and not designed for adult size hands, dont forget they are kind of replica of Genesis/Super Famicom/SNES consoles and at that time, consoles and controllers were designed for childrens/teenagers.

SUM UP
I do believe Dualshock 4 is one of best controller for Street Fighter games, d-pad is good one, buttons are fast enough, there is no need to find any other alternative unless you needs something else like a fightpad. Dualsense 5 is also decent one. In SFV/SF6 you dont really need fightpad from my point of view, all move can be done in 4 buttons layout. If you plan to play on console, stick to the stock controller. On PC, you can get alternative like fightpad (i dont recommend the Razer Raion though, FC4 is probably the best bet)
Keep in mind, sooner or later, you need to replace d-pad, buttons, its preferable to buy controllers with the ability to replace components like Playstation/Xbox
Fightstick until I die! Having your whole hand on buttons is something I can’t go back from. Although the new control scheme for 6 could change that need. The hori pads are pretty solid though.
You should really consider adding the new Hori Octa and the Betop thorne to your Review.
The Octa has become my daily driver with the Thorne coming in at close second.
Really the two best out there currently!
Unfortunately i didnt have chance to test it, my latest fightpad i ve tried its Raion, it was nearly a very good fightpad until i discovered the neutral pivot issue and mechanical switch buttons being too sensitive.
I find the ps5 controller to be too big and and to mushi doesn't feel like for my smaller/ medium sized hands personally. I love the ps4 ds4 it's perfect but you won't be able to play ps5 games with it which sucks. How does that compare to the Octa? Would you still recommend it?
I would say the feel goes more towards the playstation controller as it is more "wing heavy"then the Xbox (360) pad. In that it feels very similar to the ds4.
Xbox series x controller d-pad is king
What's the best way to connect ds4 to PC
its native on steam, so you dont have to use third party controller software
Out of steam, you might need ds4windows
I've played SFV competitively using the Hori Fighting Commander. I had several of them because it tended to lose precision on the d-pad; but when it was properly functioning, it was the best overall controller for me. So I just got a new one after the previous one got bad.
I NEVER adapted to the PS4 Dualshock. The face buttons are too far apart for me, the shoulder buttons are too far from the rest, it just didn't sit "right" in my hand (medium sized hand, able to play the guitar, for comparison). I tried fighting sticks (RAP V Silent, Panthera), but could never really adapt to it. So I stuck with the Fighting Commander, which was great.
Now I got an Xbox Series X and the SF6 demo and I gotta say... It's by far the best controller I've used. Not only the buttons are close enough to be pressed together if needed (and separate enough to be pressed by themselves, obviously), the shoulder buttons also have great travel time, even the trigger, if you press it by the base (not the tip). The d-pad is clicky, responsive, precise and sturdy, does not seem like it could break anytime like the Hori. And even the left stick, which in PlayStation is not the best input choice, works perfectly well, except for dashes.
...so I guess I'll be sticking to the Xbox Series controller now. No need to buy extra pads.
So have had a ton of leverless controllers cheap and expensive. Also main with a stock Mayflash F500 Elite with a lever.
I feel best bang for buck leverless is Haute42 C16s. Been using it for 2xKO and button placement takes a few matches to rewire your muscle memory, but it almost feels like this controller was made for this game.
C16S is quite awesome. I'm not buying any new controllers for a long time. Only problem now is I can't decide what art I want to put in it.
Also can you change the bottoms blue led light!?
Can you map either bottom pill to a different button so you can have jump on left bottom bill and dash on right bottom?
You can mine are jump and then dash
Nice, I might get the C16-S then. Have you tried the Duelpad Zen before? That one also looks great value-wise
I really like to so far, my only grip with them is that the far right pill button is a little too downward. I use it for DI and have trained myself to move my ring finger to move over to hit the upper right button on other controllers, because it is a little easier than commanding my pinky to bend itself. They chose to make the button symmetrical with the left side one and it does look nice, but the point of a pill button is to be the mid point of the standard 2 right buttons imo, and right now it is basically just positioned like a lower one that goes even further down. Probably just a personal thing for me. Getting used to just using my pinky would probably be optimal anyways, where it is very ergonomic.
I noticed this too I almost wish they moved the left pill to above the top row on the right and move the right pill up closed to it like how 8bit do does. I miss hit left direction for that pill, so set it to parry so worse case I’m dodging.
yoo instead of bending your pinky try straightening it out and using the bottom or side of it
I have a Mavercade 04MX which this one was modeled after, and it's honestly the best. Super comfortable to use with the split layout too. This one just needs a little more split, but I'm sure it's better than standard layout. Great product. DOIO has one too. It feels super intuitive in my hands.
Need to check this out
I use an 8bitdo Xbox/PC leverless. It's my first ever, after not playing any FGs for probably 10 years. It's really, really great, and I don't think I can ever go back to a stick.
So I ordered that one but returned and didn’t try it bc I ordered this. But I do love the pill placements on the 8bit do one. I love 8 bit dos stuffs.
I'm new to fighting games and I'm a keyboard player, and I want to buy my first controller, but I don't know which one to go with, any suggestions?
If you're already great at keyboard, i suggest all-buttons.
The stick is fun, but you'll have to learn how to walk again basically.
With some exceptions, it's hard to top a leverless when it comes to efficiency of inputs. If you come only from keyboards and dpads, going leverless would also likely be more intuitive than picking up a joystick.
Joysticks are certainly more fun though, imo.
Stick for fun, leverless for sweating
Stick, no question. So much more fun.
Leverless if you want to retain familiarity with keyboard.
Stick if you want the arcade experience.
That's about it.
