Character Selection and Learning
Choosing the right character to start with can make a significant difference in your gameplay experience. Mileena is recommended as a solid first character due to her high skill ceiling and difficulty to counter [1:1]. Liu Kang is also popular among beginners, offering a good balance of power and speed
[1]. For Johnny Cage enthusiasts, Xombat provides excellent tutorials that can help you master his moves
[2:1].
Practice and Tutorials
Consistent practice is key to improving in Mortal Kombat 1. Utilize practice mode to warm up and refine your combos [2:4]. Watching tutorials on YouTube or from professional players like NinjaKilla and Sonic Fox can provide valuable insights into advanced strategies and combos
[1:3],
[2:2]. Engaging in sparring sessions with more experienced players can also accelerate your learning curve
[1:3].
Understanding Game Mechanics
Learning the fundamentals of fighting games, such as footsies, neutral game, and blocking techniques, is essential [2:2],
[4:7]. Delay wake-up tactics can be used strategically to gain an advantage over opponents
[2:5]. Additionally, focusing on basic combos before integrating special moves can help build muscle memory
[2:6],
[4:2].
Playing Against AI and Online Matches
Playing against higher-level AI can train your brain to hit confirm into combos safely and understand opponent behavior [4:2]. However, transitioning to online matches is crucial for competitive play, as it exposes you to diverse matchups and helps eliminate bad habits
[4:8]. Observing pro players' movements and strategies during matches can offer practical lessons
[4:4].
Persistence and Enjoyment
Improving at Mortal Kombat requires persistence and a willingness to learn from losses [2:3]. It's important to enjoy the process, take breaks when needed, and not get discouraged by setbacks
[4:4]. Practicing consistently and having fun while playing will ultimately lead to better performance and mastery of the game
[5:2].
FYI I main Liu Kang
So I, with no experience in fighting games other than a bit of Street Fighter V, started playing MK1 for about 3 hours about yesterday, knowing nothing but having watched a few gameplay videos and the story mode 3 times on YouTube. Once I got it, I tested out numerous characters on versus mode vs the CPU, at Easy-Medium difficulty. I wanted to main, such as Raiden, Kung Lao, Sindel, Reiko, Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Cage, Reptile, Baraka etc, and I really clicked with Liu Kang after playing his story mode chapter. (kinda obvious bcuz he is an easy tier character)
I also finished the main story at medium level, losing only 3 times.
Today I played an extra 4 hours, testing out invasions for the first time, completing the Invasions tutorial, playing my first tower from the towers of time,
then I tried playing online Kasual, with a WL ratio of 5/30, while winning many rounds in between the matches, (normally the second round, and I generally leave the opponents HP at like 250 while mines at 50, so I was pretty close in winning in the games I lost, pretty good for a guy who’s never really played). I think some people probably thought I was an alt account.
I also got my first hate dm after a match that I won lol, they thought I was trash, but I agreed with them, saying I only started yesterday.
My Liu Kang’s level is at level 6ish and my overall level is level 12. So given I have the winter holiday mostly free. What should I do to get better and fully master Liu Kang, and win more in Kasual and eventually starting Ranked?
Doesn’t matter what charecter you start with just please look up a video for them and learn combo strings and what attacks can hit your opponent when the game is much more fun that way and much easier go into practice range for as much as you need it made learning Omni man and ghost face much easier to practice or warm up
Bro, find a good sparring partner. Preferably someone better than you… so you can learn and consistently improve and get advice as you play. Watch R1ps Arena, NinjaKilla and Sonic fox… see their playstyle and try to mimic it. As time goes, you will find you are catching on and improving. You’ll find the openings and whiff punishes you couldn’t before… I’m down to practice with you if you need a sparring partner. No lie. Lemme know and I’ll send the info and we can throw down and have some fun.
Be good either way, bro!
Many, many hours of practice until I could stay at 50% KL Ratio. As long as you have 3 hours a day it should only take you a few months 🤣🤣
Tutorials.
Mileena is a solid first character too learn, she’s hard to counter fully, and offers a high skill ceiling
Learn the fundimentals of fighting games like footsies, neutralgame, et cetera (this is info that'll be useful in ANY fighting game)
Play the tutorial, both the basic and the character specific one for Johnny if you're having trouble with learning the pacing of combos/ button presses.
Go on youtube, look up tutorials and tips for the character by pros. The newer the better.
Play lots of matches, learn how to adapt to different matchups, and learn from your mistakes but don't take losses too hard; no one gets "ok" at fighting games without getting their teeth punched in a whole lot, no one gets "good" without getting their ass beat a whole lot more after that.
To add to this play in practice mode often. I usually start every session with 10-20 minutes warming up my old fingers with my main combos.
Thx my friend
If you playing versus or mk league learn your opponent I can’t stress that enough a lot of people play in a type of move pattern once you learn that you’ll be good and do not get discouraged if you lost like 2 games back to back the thing I will say tho is watch out for the sub zeros and the raidens their fucking annoying
Learn delay wake up use it to your advantage
Ignore specials while you learn your strings. Once you get those down, learn to fit specials in
Xombat does some REALLY good johnny cage tutorials, could also watch ninjakillas more recent johnny video. Both great ways to get down how johnny plays
I've been playing the game for the past 3 days, and got a few wins in, but after the 3rd or 4th fighter, I find myself getting pummeled to death, blown into smitherines, uppercut off of high places, and so many other deaths. I'm trying to improve, and learn by watching other people play the game, but when I try to play it myself I keep ending up dead. Does anybody have some helpful advice for playing the game?
These games are based on quarter crunchers - you don’t get better, you get cheaper…lol
Honestly the best strategy might be to just spam the running combos. Plenty characters have special attacks to freeze the opponent in place to set em up. Either that or just play with one of the op ass sub- bosses.
Just bought MK1 and likely need help. Been a fan of the games for a long time, but never really got good. Beaten a lot of them, all the NRS titles, deadly alliance, deception, and Armageddon. But it was mostly luck. Any tips on combos, who should I play, what Dlc should I get?
once you understand the basic fundamentals, play against hard cpu, it will train your brain to get better at hit confirming into combos safely. Watch a basic bread and butter combo on yt for your desired main. Dont give up! This game is fun and everyone quits cuz they suck at cameos.
play the tutorial, pick any character and practice, go to towers play online. Just have fun amigo
Respectfully, advise number 3 is not very good. I guess it depends on what OP's long term goal is, but fighting CPUs will build bad habits
The point of fighting CPU is for learning the opponents combo strings, whats low, whats an overhead etc... too many players jump to online matches without a clue of the match up
#3 is best at first. There's no pressure to win, just learn. It's fun, too. Go to practice mode and go ham with hard difficulty. When you jump online for the first time, the reward is sweet and addicting
All good advice, I can't remember if blocking works the same way with MK11, but if you block while standing, someone can kick you or do a lower attack, but if you block while crouching, they can do an attack like a jump kick or a higher attack, so remember to use the right block for the right kind of attacks.
exactly, that's why tip #3 is there
Thank you these are some really good tips
yk what else is long and hard?
It depends on what you're getting good for. If you just want to enjoy the game on single player, you need to practice against higher level AI, understand its behavior, and work on your best combos with the characters you wanna play as.
If you want to get good competitively, you need to go get your ass kicked repeatedly by people who are better than you and pay close attention to what they are doing right and what you are doing wrong. This is what will reinforce good habits and help you get rid of bad ones.
Remember that human opponents and AI opponents are two different beasts. Don't assume that just because you're good at beating one that it means you'll be good at beating the other.
Thank you, probably going to play with family and friends.
I start playing MK1 today and was praticing this combo about 40 minutes until sucessfully executed. I have no experience on other MK games or fight games. Can you guys drop some tips to help me get better into it? Sometimes i click some commands just doesn't happen, even executing fast. (Sorry about grammatical mistakes, it is not my main language).
Watch other people that are good at the game and always stay in practice so you can execute your combos better. Practice makes perfect.
Ty bro💪
I mean you're doing pretty good for someone who started today lmao but yeah you'll find good guides on youtube for each characters + combo ideas for all levels. and then practice !
Thxx, im gonna watch some videos
So I have always wanted to be some what good at MK, not a pro or insanely good but just good so that I can have fun at it. But either I am just not made for the game or I am not putting in enough work. I was trying basic youtube guide tutorials on combos with Liu Kang and for some reason certain moves were not registering and I am not sure if its me or my controller. I am using a xbox type of controller on my PC and for example when I have to do his dragon kick which is back forward X, it doesnt register properly. I dont know if I am doing it too fast or what it is but correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure when you combo in a game like this you have to string the combo fast so it flows ? Long story short either I am too impatient or the way combos are done on a controller are awkward for me.
There are moments when even the controller movement is too sensitive or insensitive. For example I would go to practice an air combo and my character would not jump at all even though I am moving the analog stick diagonally. But I guess enough with my rant, I am wondering what the issue could be with me that I can fix ? Lastly I wanted to bring in Black Desert online, not sure how many of you are familiar with the game but the game itself is an MMO and yes the game is not the same as MK but it is a combo based game that involes some what high apm when doing a combo. I dont know if its easier for me to grasp it on that game because I am so use to Keyboard and mouse and Controller comboing is new to me or could it be something else ? Not really to sure. But any advice is welcome because I really like the MK games and how the fighting is done in them, and really want to get good at it.
Been playing MK since the first one came out on SNES. I didn't get serious with it until MKX.
What really helped me was finding a friend to lab with in online practice mode. Ge helped me a lot with combo timing, learning pokes, reversals, wakeup etc.
Online has a bit of a delay, but in my experience learning to do them in online practice made it 100x easier to nail them offline. Without the delay they'd come out butter smooth.
I'd also really recommend going to the tutorial hub and doing all of them. They really help teach you more mechanics than just pulling off a combo. A lot of the time matches are about footies, pokes, dash cancels and zoning.
Thank you for the advice, will put in the work to get it right !
Some controllers register button inputs better. For some reason my default Xbox controller works better especially when it comes to hitting combos compared to my fancy controller with mouse click buttons and paddles.
My personal tips for you would be
1:Go for whoever appeals to "You"". Don't play a character you don't want to look at.
2: standing 2 is an excellent punish with every character.
3: learn at least one %30 combo with whomever you choose. If you do that three times in a match you win. You also have to account for grabs ands pokes and whatnot you get here and there.
4:Mk1 just came out give yourself a chance to feel it out.
5:which is most important DO NOT GET FRUSTRATED. No matter how good you get someone is always better. Learn from mistakes.
I never expected such a warm welcome. I will go at it again and find a character I like and try to learn from there. So far the comment from you and others are so nice to read and encourage me to go again.
Also don't be afraid of other people online. I became friends with some of my opponents and last thing I know I'm friends with one of the best fucking players in Xbox. Learned a lot from them too.
I would turn release check off. It's on by default.
I will do so tonight. Thank you for the tip !
i know a little about playing raiden in MK9, but not really. Other than that i have only played smash bros with the boys.
Whoever you think is cool. You’ll have more fun playing a character you like
Honestly it has to be whoever you think has the coolest design
The one you like the most.
Baraka
Play everyone a little and keep playing whoever you find most fun.
Okay, so I recently picked up mk11 to play with some friends and I’m complete garbage.. I’ve never played a 2D in my life, and I’m tired of getting smacked by my friends? What advice/tips would you suggest besides just practice to help me improve faster?
I think sparring with people and having them give input helps, as well as tutorial mode and learning the technical aspects of the game! I love getting input and giving it, as well.
I’m working on learning all of the characters and have mastered about 5 of the 25 * on the roster. It really helps to know as much as you can so you can be more efficient.
>mastered about 5 of the 12(?) on the roster
There's 25 characters including Shao Khan, not sure where you are getting 12 from.
Lmfao I didn’t count. I guesstimated like an idiot haha. Correction. 5 of 25. Thank you
Do the tutorial and do not skip it is rge best wy to learn things
I'm just wanting to do a lot of the one player stuff in the game as a completionist in want to know what character is fairly easy to be okay enough at to beat the computer
Any one. Just pick who you like or think looks cool, or whatever.
they all have the same skill floor and ceiling?
Nope, but it doesn't really matter since your just playing 1 player stuff.
Lui Kang, Cassie Cage, Sonya Blade, Kung Lao. Those are my chars to go. I am not a pro or anything but i find them rather quick learning.
Hey everyone have been watching some MK1 streams recently and i really liked the graphics and colors of the games.
I bought an arcade stick some time ago to play SF5, and i was wondering if MK1 feels good to play with it or if i should buy SF6 instead (also heared some good reviews bout it), since i heared people saying MK isnt rlly great to play at the arcade stick.
So the point here is to actually use the arcade stick since it makes the experience more fun
I kinda like more the characters of MK but im more into SF gameplay. What direction should i turn?
Best regards.
And depending on what kind of character you use in MK for instance, Johnny Cage would be a lot harder to use, because he has the taunting where you would have to use like another button to taunt, where scorpions a little more straightforward
Whether it’s a controller arcade stick and needs to feel right for you regardless of the game.
I play with stick and I’m kicking ass
MK edition or standard one? isnt it a pain due to block system and stuff?
Block isn’t bad as a button just takes getting used to coming from other games. I tend to be able to flawless block easier on stick
Genuinely curious how you use talismans in Invasion. You need a right stick.
You bind it to a button?
Alot of sticks have R3/L3 buttons near the home button since some FGs use those as the reset button
I’m using my Quamba crystal on mk 1 with scorpion I’m doing ok. I would think whatever easier for u. Typically speaking, Mortal Kombat isn’t usually played on arcade sticks but for me, I’m having more of a problem using the PS five controller and pausing the fucking game then with an arcade stick lol
