TL;DR Utilize Sub-Zero's mix-ups, defensive capabilities, and baiting strategies to maximize his strengths. Practice hit-confirmation and combo execution to improve your gameplay.
Defensive Play and Baiting
Sub-Zero is known for his strong defensive capabilities, which can be used to deter opponents from rushing in. His ice clone is particularly effective at keeping aggressive players at bay [2:1]. Baiting opponents into making mistakes, such as whiffing attacks or falling for the ice clone, allows you to start your offense effectively
[2:2].
Mix-Ups and Combos
Sub-Zero excels with mix-ups, primarily using overheads and lows to keep opponents guessing. The basic 50/50 mix-up strategy involves using overhead starters and low starters to create opportunities for full combos [3:1]
[3:2]. Practicing these mix-ups will help you climb the ranks of Sub-Zero players quickly. Additionally, learning to hit-confirm—reacting to whether an attack hits or is blocked—is crucial for maximizing damage output
[3:3].
Kameo Selection and Strategy
Choosing the right kameo character can enhance Sub-Zero's playstyle. For instance, Sonya can complement Sub-Zero by allowing combo extensions off his moves [2:1]. Experimenting with different kameos like Sektor or Stryker can also provide strategic advantages depending on your opponent's playstyle
[2].
Practicing Combos and Watching High-Level Play
Improving your execution of combos is essential for mastering Sub-Zero. Engaging in combo challenges and watching high-level gameplay on platforms like YouTube can provide insights into advanced techniques and strategies [4:4]
[4:5]. This practice helps refine your skills and adapt successful tactics from experienced players.
General Tips
Staying composed during matches and avoiding random button mashing are key to executing Sub-Zero's strategies effectively [4:1]. Understanding the range and timing of his moves, especially slower ones like certain overheads, can prevent punishments from savvy opponents
[4:2].
Sub Zero's really tough to fight. Most of his strings aren't really punishable with the exception of overheads, and you can't really zone him or do much spacing at all thanks to his slide and ice ball trades are in his favor. Letting him get a jump in feels pretty much like a death-sentence too.
More practice or am I doing something wrong?
I've been doing alright with liu kang against sub zero
i find the best way to beat subzero is to bait him into something stupid, like a slide. he seems vulnerable to corner pressure,
How are you baiting him into sliding. I find that his slide almost always catches me once I've finally decided to start blocking and try and put pressure on.
neutral jump. let it get you once. then go to jump again. hop, block, punish, tbag, repeat
Sub is a strong character, not gonna lie. He’s got a hard time against tele’s though because iceball is too slow to not insta punish.
Okay interesting. Thanks for the heads up. I wonder if he'll get a nerf soon, he has a lot of decent resets for restarting combos with either lows or overheads. Maybe I'll just go back to playing him instead lol
Anyway, thanks
Block low
My biggest tip is: don't.
Sub-Zero is the devil.
I recently got Mortal Kombat 1 and I'm maining Sub-Zero. Any tips for that character? Fighting strats, defensive or offensive... It seems, like Sub-Zero always seems to me, that it's a bit heavy and slow, but with a couple of quick bait moves.
Also, I'm currently using Sektor as the kameo, cause his movement of throwing the opponent away helps me connect it with a slide, but I've seen people using Sonya. And of course, the classic Stryker.
Thanks.
Yeah you're mostly gonna wanna bait people into clone or just a whiff punish in general and then start your offense. I don't think he's a character where you just come out the gate swinging on offense, especially since his strings and frame data aren't good
Take advantage of the fact most experienced players will not rush and attack Sub like a madman due to his excellent defense moves. His ice clone alone is enough to deter people from rushing you in a ready or getup position. With Sonya as kameo you can combo off all his moves. He has rather good mixups imo. His back 3,4 into kameo is a nasty combo starter which takes a lot of people by surprise.
So i have just gotten back into mk11 and even when losing i find it incredibly fun but to the point. My only experience really is story mode and i was wondering if anyone has any tips or streamers for someone to improve as sub-zero? TIA
Overhead starter low starter.
Use both of them and you instantly jump to the top 15% of sub zero players
Number 1 thing to do is to learn how to hit-confirm. Put AI on random block and make sure you can 100% of the time hit-confirm into a full combo.
Sub zero is pretty one dimensional in this game. You just mix people with the overhead and low.
Sure you can have good footsies and staggers and all that but it all works because people are afraid of his mix.
Start with the basic 50/50s then as you improve, look to improving other areas because subs mix ups should kinda carry you a little while you learn fundamentals
Im new at mk1 and I tried some characters now and Sub Zero seems very nice. I need to become better than my Level 50 friend asap and YouTube dont Help me very much rn, does someone have Tips or can Help me?
I know that overhead that pops them up in the air is nice (back abnd either y or triangle) but it is SLOW and you will get punished for just throwing it out. Try to work out distances too as you can frequently surprise someone with a longer range button (not special) than you think at that level
Use sonya, mix with b2 and b3, standing 2 for neutral, f1 for mid.
His typical bnb route is launcher into air 2,1 delayed ice clone, air 1, 2, end with standing 3 into slide.
He's not my main but I do play him a decent amount and have a lot of success with him. If the person you're fighting can't consistently react to b2 online it's basically a free win as long as you play well.
When I was wanting to learn, I went through the combo challenges and watched high level play on YouTube to see what was possible
What Combo Challenges?
Might be a bit obvious but stay composed when doing your combos and avoid random button mashing
I really Struggle with this because the only other Game that is a bit Like this was Brawlhalla and there I used the Joystick but my friend told me to use d Pad or what ITS called
Yeah I get that, I struggled hard too, especially with aerial combos. Someone else mentioned going through the character trials, really good to practice and get better
Winning is great and all, but once the sub-boss appears you gotta jump that mf to maximize points
Nah u can win without sub unless you need 1k points for mission
Plus the additional points help with ranking. It’s just about getting the most points you can
He has like 2 kinds of kombos why do you need almost 10 minutes for it?
I would like to help beginners out! Here are more guides like these for other characters! Link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLWTRIaseNnkXm1-ch-1VWmM18ftKOThu
He is a bit fun but I don't now how to combo with him so I'm trying to learn some basic one (the clip is something I thought was some what decent)
You are not gonna get the ice ball on a regular match, use your normal combo starter, when you get it he is fun and very consistent
Them hitting the ground kills the combo so the FB can be blocked and punished.
Sub/Sub isn't much of a combo team but more of an anti zoning/mashing.
So don't double sub and keep them in the air
You can combo with sub/sub, the damage is gonna be bad because you'll freeze off of the kameo or fighter, if not both.. freezing gives horrible scaling, it is ideally for anti-zoning. But yeah, the idea is you need to juggle them in the air, or if you have access to a restand, you can continue the combo.. as far as the restand, Ice slide into sektor's double rockets come to mind.
Sub/Sub is a good team, but you have to play patiently using it. The ice armor helps you ignore zoning, the parry can help you punish the opponent for mashing and armoring too much. The cold shoulder is a very safe move that you can do klone after to get a good distance away from the enemy. The freeze gives you decent combo damage and it can be done as an ambush after the ice armor which can give you safety and slide combos
As others have said I think you should just learn the beginner stuff first then decide who you like to play. Once you’ve learnt the fundamentals then you’ll understand how to come up with all sorts of combos. I personally love this game for all the potential there is for creative combos
That ice ball isn’t gonna hit in neutral 99.9% of the time. I’d recommend looking up some videos on how to play neutral, how turns work, frame data etc, then you’ll be able to lab combos more efficiently
His best kameo is Serena if you don’t have khameleon. Please go do his combo tutorials.
Try foreward 1 standing 2 into down foreward 3 instead
Maybe people here don't recomend him because he is "toxic"? But Sikander is an excelent sub player with sic combo routes.
Lol there is something really wholesome about this clip, although it doens't make sense, it shows somebody having fun trying to figure things out, it really takes me back.
I remember Jason coming out on mkx and I watched my first “how to read frame data” video and it just killed me. Now I’m like gimmie gimmie gimmie every new character and don’t need it lol what a great joy it is to finally learn and understand
Also how can I block Noob's teleport thing?
Edit: I play on Switch
Overhead and lows
These will beat new players but if you stick with game you’ll need to develop more skills.
Are you on PS4? I main SZ. I can play with you. Also watch Tom Brady on YouTube. He's pretty methodical with regards to his playstyle. Sikander is good too. He's less predictable and a really good SZ player. He's not a loyalist though, so you won't see him use SZ against any tough matchups like Jade
You can easily punish noobs teleport
Most of the time it’s predictable too
Watch sikander on YouTube
Wish he could compete at tournaments, he really is pretty great on him
Why can't he compete?
You can block Noob's teleport by just blocking :D. Follow it up the block with an uppercut to get a free krushing blow!
For playing as Sub, practice his overhead, lows, and canceling into his specials like his iceball or slide. You can get some really good combos going if you cancel into the ice ball.
He's a blast, enjoy!
I do like the the slide and the new f123 brutalities, but in general there is just too much of "enemy explodes" in mk1.
I really wish we got a Sub-Zero Cover Art for MK11 like we did for MKXL and Deception. Sub-Zero was peak here.
Back when sub zero had swag
He still has swag what you mean?
Not compared to mk11
Not only do many of the brutalities seem to lack creativity, but the explosion brutalities seem to lack impact in MK1 too. It’s more like they just reduce to pulp and all the bones fall on the floor in about the same spot. The older games seemed to have greater explosions than the current game.
Personally brutalities are stellar this game when they aren’t like a random explosion. Some really work like noob’s but some are so random like kitana’s.
We get insanely good ones like shang’s acid stab, and mid ones like the random kabooms
I blame all the clowns who complain the animation were to long on mk 11 now they short asf
This was also my main, bro was he fun to play. I loved all the hate that came with it too. His damage w/ the krushing blows was insane 🔥
Interesting because it seems like Kuai was always a brutal and harsh fighter. In MK1 I see they made attempts to switch it around to make it look like Kuai is now gentle and sub is more harsh and brutal as a fighter (in personality too) but sub seems so harsh, quick and brutal here.
Special cancel into ice ball any time you can. That's your main tool. Amp slide when you can for guaranteed krushing blow on 3rd amp slide. Best variation for tournament is the first one. If you don't care about ranked use air axe and ground freeze. (Also 33 is an underrated move)
Your main combo should be
b3,2 df1 d d d d d d b1,4,3 bf3
Watch YouTube videos. Maybe play some KOTH as well to see how other players play. Practice kombos.
Also, learn other players moves. I can’t tell you the amount of times I got bodied because I didn’t know a certain characters moves.
Tom Brady's channel for instance.
Use Dead of Winter. Everyone is always on about his slide but the Deep Freeze you get from DOW is a much better tool for consistent damage.
