TL;DR
AT&T Plan Options
AT&T is praised for its reliability and consistent service, which is particularly important for those who use a large amount of data. Users have reported paying around $35 per line for the most expensive plan, which they find reasonable given the service quality [3]. This plan is suitable for individuals who use significant amounts of data, such as over 2TB per month, due to work or other activities
[4:6].
Network Coverage and Performance
AT&T's network upgrades have significantly improved their coverage and performance, even in rural areas. Some users have experienced an increase in speeds from 10 Mbps to 600 Mbps after switching to AT&T [3:1]. The consistency of AT&T's service is often highlighted as a key advantage over competitors like T-Mobile, which can be inconsistent depending on the location
[4:1].
Comparison with Other Carriers
While AT&T is favored for its reliability, some users consider switching to T-Mobile or Verizon for potential savings. However, it's noted that T-Mobile's advertised savings may not always materialize, as they include perks like Netflix and Hulu in their calculations, which might not be relevant to all users [4:12]. Additionally, Verizon's plans might not offer substantial savings compared to AT&T, especially for heavy data users
[4:4].
Transitioning from AT&T
For those considering moving off AT&T, US Mobile is recommended for its flexibility and ability to choose your data amount and network [5:3]. This could be a cost-effective option, especially for multi-line households looking to save money
[5:2]. It's also suggested to explore refurbished phones from platforms like Swappa, Backmarket, and Amazon to further reduce costs
[5:3].
In conclusion, while AT&T remains a strong contender for those needing reliable and extensive data usage, exploring alternatives like US Mobile can provide financial benefits without compromising too much on service quality.

I’m looking to cut down on my monthly phone bill this year. Right now, I feel like I’m overpaying for the service I’m getting, and I know there are some good budget-friendly options out there in 2025.
For those of you who have already made the switch, what are the best cheap cell phone plans you’ve found this year? I’m looking for something reliable with good coverage, but still affordable.
Any recommendations for me?
Some pre-steps:
In order to take full advantage, you will probably want a phone with 5G and ESIM capability, so maybe consider buying a new unlocked phone first if you don't have that. There are even different types of 5G, for example some phones don't have mmWave receivers (TBF, mmWave support is limited anyway, especially indoors).
I would recommend checking mobile network coverage of the 3 major carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon) in the area you care about. This is the best graphical site I am aware of for doing that. I believe it pulls from the national FCC website which is also useful.
Ironically, if you have the ability to do wifi calling/messaging at home, then it may be more important to have good mobile coverage elsewhere.
Anyway, that will give you a first guess at signal strength and coverage for the area(s) you care about. If it is poor for one of the carriers then you can eliminate MVNOs that exclusively use that carrier. Failing that, the internet broadly claims that T-Mobile's network has the best 5G coverage in cities, Verizon is supposed to have best rural coverage (4G, but sometimes high network congestion), AT&T is somewhere in between the two. YMMV.
If you want cheap plans then you will typically go with a MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) that piggybacks on top of 1 (or more) of the 3 major carriers to provide support to you. Most MVNOs are tied to 1 network. The exceptions I am aware of are US Mobile, Red Pocket, and (maybe) Boost -- switching networks under them is possible which is nice if your current one sucks, but is still generally one at a time unless you want to shell out $$$.
On to the recommendations:
-- If you are ok with T-Mobile network and only looking for most competitive intro rates, Mint Mobile's $15/month unlimited is hard to beat. Downside is you need to pay at least 3 months out.
-- I ended up going with US Mobile because I like the AT&T network and I can get what I want for $20/month indefinitely including fees or taxes. I have read about their support on the AT&T network degrading after 1 month. I tried to avoid this by starting out immediately on ass tier (skipping 30-day unlimited free trial period), so they won't feel the need to degrade anything after 1 month haha. So far so good.
-- Tello (which runs on T-Mobile) also looked like a nice option in terms of month-to-month, non-introductory, great rate coverage. Their mobile app also has better reviews than US Mobile's. A family member uses and likes them.
Note that most MVNO's mobile data traffic is generally deprioritzed by one level from the major carriers, so in a congested environment your response times may be slower. The only exceptions I am aware of for this are Google Fi; and US Mobile on Verizon premium plan (soon to go away) or on AT&T network (if you pay more for it). So far, deprioritization has not affected me. Again, YMMV.
Other things you may want to consider: international calls, international roaming, mobile hotspot support, etc. etc.
How did you get for $20 per month indefinitely?
I am currently on their By-The-Gig 10gig/month plan which is $20/month. (sorry, I didn't mean $20 was a lifetime guarantee or anything ... it's just not an introductory rate.)
Good2gomobile $60 a year for ATT coverage.
Was trying to look online. Is that the one with only 1 GB of data per month?
Yes
Add taxes and fees which vary by location.
I’ve done a bit of research recently and a few options really stood out for cheap plans this year:
EliteTechMarketplace - it’s not a carrier itself, but more of a comparison site that ranks and reviews the best budget-friendly carriers with proper ratings. Super handy if you want to see all the top options in one place before deciding.
Lyca Mobile – every plan includes international calling, high-speed 5G data, and no contracts or hidden fees.
Visible – runs on Verizon’s network with unlimited everything (talk, text, data). No hidden fees, plus they sometimes have promos like a free phone with select plans.
SnapFon – more of a niche option, but worth checking out if you want something simple and affordable.
All of these are prepaid/MVNO style, so you save money compared to the big carriers without locking into a contract.
Visible is 19 a month!!
I really wanted to post here sooo I did a speed test and looked up my nearest tower.
Additionally…
Switched from Verizon to AT&T and paying almost $35 a line out the door for the most expensive plan is not bad at all. I wonder if T-Mobile can really save me 20% 🤔 Really happy with the service and it’s consistent which matters most to me since I use north of 2TB of data each month… also worth noting that on average I get 800⬇️ 20-70⬆️
How do you use 2TB a month??
Well my job is 80% on the road, and I have to look up businesses up to poach them. Then you add the majority of time I spend in reddit to kill time plus doing speed tests and that sums up most of it 🙂↔️🙂↔️
Looks like a troll post
"6+ lines" 😳
Been loving ATT recently, they've been doing upgrades all over my county. Went from 10 mbps to 600 in my backyard and I live rural.

tmobile hitting 1600mbps down the road: hold my beer
at&t averaging 400 (which is still godly for at&t in my area): we chill
My fiancé & I both have iPhones. I’m on AT&T, she’s on T-Mobile. I have dropped three calls in twenty years. My lady drops calls as often as monthly.
When traveling internationally, AT&T works every time, even with 2G roaming. T-Mobile has so many problems outside of the country, it doesn’t even matter if unlimited international roaming is included. It feels like Sprint back in the day.
Speed isn’t everything. 400mbit on a phone is already ridiculous and largely unnecessary for anyone.
And not to mention 80% the att sites are 1 gig backgaul too can’t go past 600 and that’s if there’s even mid band there most the time it’s n5 only 🤣🤣🤣
Don’t get me wrong I actually have 2 T-Mobile home internet backup set up at 2 different addresses hooked up to an AT&T cell booster and the speeds are impressive but that’s just it with T-Mobile they are amazing in certain areas then you travel 3-4 miles and the service is a whole different experience.
With AT&T it’s always a dead reliable and consistent speed and realistically nobody needs more than 300Mbps down considering that with 20-30Mbps you can stream high quality video… and most importantly part of my family travels abroad and sometimes stay an extended amount so roaming is extremely important without all the funny fees 🙂↔️
It's not likely T-Mobile is going to save you 20%. They already got in trouble for " misleading advertising" over those claims.
Honestly I’m starting to like AT&T even more. They don’t promise the moon and the stars, they don’t pretend to be what they aren’t so I’m a happy camper!
Good to hear. More people need to vote with their wallets, go to the company that works for them , and fk loyalty to these carriers. There's no loyalty to consumers.
T-Mobile will definitely not save you money. There is literally no discounts. I brought my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra so BYOD on Verizon unlimited ultimate so that’s $15 a month for 36 months. So from $90 after $10 auto pay that’s $75. I also got a loyalty discount for $10 so that’s $65 before taxes and fees. I added a watch account also BYOD so $7 and after fees like around $75 total per month. T-Mobile most expensive plan is experience beyond which is $100 after auto pay and well that’s it for me. That’s before taxes and fees. And let’s just say I signed up for Go5G next back when I signed up for Verizon when they added the 200GB hotspot. That’s still $100 with taxes and fees included.
I think with AT&T PL and work discount I would get it around $65 as well with BYOD discount. I ended up also getting a line on AT&T prepaid as well as my Verizon line and happy with it.
How on earth are you using that much data on reddit lol?
I use over 1,000 gigs regularly a month on my unlimited AT&t
iOS doesn’t reset it per month so it’s based off the lifetime of that sim that was first inserted onto your iPhone unless they manually reset it. So it could be over a period of time
T-Mobile’s 20% savings advertising is misleading — they include perks like the cost of Netflix, Hulu, etc. in that. If you don’t care for those services, or if you have them through other means, you will definitely not save 20%.
After being with AT&T for a very very long time, I'm finally looking to move off and save some money. I discovered this sub recently and have been trying to educate myself on the different options but would appreciate some advice on my proposed plan in case I'm overlooking something.
Here's our current situation:
Additional details:
Here's what I'm thinking:
First move the 2 low usage non-contract phones to a different provider. I'm eyeing US Mobile's 5GB plan for $23/mo or their BOGO Dark Star offer that ends 8/20.
Get the 7th phone line with US Mobile or other provider and buy a refurbished iPhone 13,14, or 15 from Buy Market or someplace similar. Thinking about waiting until the 17 comes out in case prices drop on the other phones. This phone is going to be my high schooler's so it doesn't have to be the latest/greatest.
When the AT&T contract ends on the other 4 phones in 2 months, move those over to US Mobile Unlimited plans.
Does this sound like a good plan or are there other suggestions? What's the most cost-effective way to go about upgrading the 4 high usage phones when we eventually want to do that? Trade-in directly with Apple? I'm so used to AT&T partially subsidizing all our upgrades (at the cost of committing of course).
Definitely a pretty good plan. US Mobile is definitely the way to go, especially when it comes to networks. You get to pick which of the 3 you want to be on. BOGO does have to use Att network or you forfeit the free line for a year
Thanks! What’s sad is that even if I end up having to forfeit the free line for a year and sign up for another one, it’s still cheaper than what I’m paying for the 2 lines now.
This is a great plan. US mobile gives you so much flexibility to choose your data amount and network.
I also agree with always looking at refurbished iPhones. Backmarket, Amazon, and Swappa all have options to trade in your device when buying one and they have cash offers. If you are going to buy brand new iPhones, go through Apple directly and they have a trade in program as well.
Thanks for the Swappa mention. I’ll add that to my list!

Looking to switch from T-Mobile thought about spectrum but just got off the phone from being yelled at because I wanted to weigh my options. So now I’m looking at AT&T fiber. We stream on two to three devices, do live videos, and I video edit. Which plan sounds best for my needs thought I’d make a post as I don’t have an idea and need to stay around my current price of $55 a month if that would meet my needs but don’t wanna go up unless I have to. Thanks!
The salesman that came by my house said I would be locked in to the $65 price so does that mean my bill will stay there and not go to regular price after 12 months?
Tad late but door to door are not employees, call retention to figure out what deals are on the account, some may not apply for 2-3 billing cycles, also that sounds like a bundle price if you have AT&T cell service
Current bundle promo is $47/month. $65 is the correct non-bundle price with auto-pay and continual $15 monthly promo discount.
300Mbps is more than enough for your average home, even with a large family.
Right now on the myat&t app it shows regular price of $90 a month. Will that change to the promo price when installed? It is already showing activation fee waived. Supposed to be installed tomorrow.
The 300 Mbps should be more than enough.
We don't know two things about your video editing:
I have the 1 Gbps plan but have never been able to download more than 450 Mbps from any server.
You'll love fiber. Welcome to the club.
Don’t have an exact ballpark atm but a several minute edited video after exporting usually is around 1-2GB clips are imported from my cameras sd card. After exporting it’s either uploaded to GD to share with clients, YouTube, or transferred to USB
300 Mbps will be sufficient. Wait until you've had/used/experienced fiber. Since you rely so much on upload, you'll never want to go back. Enjoy.
EDIT: Just had a thought... You could start with the 500 Mbps and monitor your uploads. If you're exceeding 300 Mbps it might be worth it for you to save time. If not, you're in your "30-day trial" period, so you can easily downgrade to 300 Mbps.
Go with ANYTHING except Spectrum!
Yeah, you can start out with the 300 Mbps, since it is the same price as what you are paying now, to see if it fits your needs!
You can always upgrade if you need to!
The 300Mbps plan is perfectly fine for your needs and keeps you at the price point you want to be at.
Thank you!
Besides, you can easily just change your speed to something faster at any time if you want. I went with 500Mbps and it's complete overkill.
Speed Tests only show your top speed. Which is good to know you are getting what you are paying for, but other than that, it's pretty meaningless. What most people just don't know is their real would speed usage which is generally way, way, way lower than they think.
I used to think I was a heavy user. Once I moved to Prosumer hardware and could see my speed in real time in a graph, I was shocked. Getting in the 40Mbps speed range is doing pretty good. With a spike of 130Mbps once in a rare period of time.
ISP's like to sell people on 1Gb. Xfinity likes to push 1.2Gb, see look at us, you are getting an extra 200Mbps of speed over the normal 1Gb. Even though most home users only have a 1Gb Network. So a waste of 200Mb. Besides people are not getting anywhere close to 1Gb. It's just all marketing B.S. People have hardware that just doesn't show them real world speeds
What 5G SA? 😂
AT&T probably isn't going to have SA out in 2025.
They most definitely have SA out already, just isn’t as widespread as T-Mobile. I wonder is it active for Cricket, I could activate on the $35 plan and test out their SA if it’s available. I see SA+NSA on DarkStar US Mobile.
I meant on a national basis, enabled for most accounts like on T-Mobile and Verizon.
There’s no SA toggle on cricket yet, at least on iPhone.
I feel like it's barely active anywhere. Very few select markets.
I don't think we have any SA for them here in Los Angeles. If there is, it's super limited or specific plans.
It’s currently only in the Lorado TX market
Broadcasting, but not able to register with most regular lines.
May I ask which app is that? Thanks
CellMapper
lol. was going to say the same in my area.
We all know the answer to this. “Coming Next Year”
Been with ATT for over 20 years now. Stuck with them because my original corporate discount was 30% off but now is a measly $10 per line. Currently paying about $250 for two lines and an Apple Watch. Insane. Time to switch.
I’m on an iPhone 12 Pro (paid off) that’s due for an upgrade and very keen on upgrading to the forthcoming iPhone 17 Air or 17 Pro this year. My wife’s on a 16 that’s only like 6 months into contract with ATT.
What’s my best strategy to maximize on carrier offers to switch? Like do I upgrade with ATT first and then switch to a T-Mobile or Verizon? I know most people here love MVNOs and I’m definitely intrigued by USM/Visiblr but don’t see a lot of phone offers. Am I just looking at all this wrong? What’s the best way to do this?
Appreciate any advice!
I think you would be surprised. If you actually run the numbers on two lines you're often better off buying direct from apple or samsung and financing through them and getting prepaid with a flanker brand of your preferred carrier. You more often than not come out ahead this way.
For example last year we traded in iphone 14s for pro max 15s through apple and financed, our payment was ~$30 for the phone and we got on prepaid $25 plans that have worked GREAT. So our monthly for each line is $55 bucks. No postpaid is going to come close to that.
Where pre paid can't really compete is when you are paying for 4+ lines. Often then postpaid is the way.
Yeah the thought definitely crossed my mind. But my wife lost her phone earlier this year and we got a new one under contract. Would I just pay it off to take it to the new carrier?
If you pay it off early don't they still penalize, meaning won't they tack on an early termination fee- an expensive fee
You could. Tmobile used to have a "buy off your phone" promo depending on which carrier. Thats what we did with our iphone 14s before we traded them in so we didn't owe anything on them.
I no longer buy my phones from a carrier, just from the manufacturer directly. That way, I have complete control of my phone and move as I see fit if needed.
I almost always do this also but last year a crazy deal came along from mint where I could get the just released pixel 9 and a year of service for about $520 upfront.
The phone was unlocked within 60 days as well.
The most expensive phone you will ever buy is one from a major carrier that is supposedly free. You pay more for a month of service that I do for a year. Buy an unlocked phone from the manufacturer. If you want to save some money buy a refurbished phone off eBay. If you want to save even more and get a better phone stay away from Apple.
Seriously, if you have to have Apple buy it from Apple or refurbished on eBay. Then sign up for an MVNO prepay. Right now, mint mobile has a unlimited plan for $180 for the year, which comes out to $202 with taxes. US Mobile, visible, and tello are other good options. I have not been in a carrier store since 2017, and the money I've saved I can take a major vacation. 😁
Ha, isn’t this the truth!
I keep getting these flyers to come back to Verizon, with a unique code for “free iPhone 16 Pro’s.” And when I do the math with all the taxes and fees, and any worthwhile (not totally deprioritized plan), it just doesn’t make sense.
I don’t think the old phone deals (contract era) of subsidized phones exist anymore. The carriers changed/morphed how they do things these days. But most of the changes are not really pro-consumer at all.
For the most part, all the “free phone” deals are just bait, and end up paying more for the phones (just not up front).
Back in the day as we say it was a deal. Not anymore
Visible offers smartwatch service for free on their pro+ plan and with promo code 6off12 it $6 off per month for a year so your total cost would be $39 a month. I also agree buy an unlocked phone from anybody except a carrier because it will be locked to that carrier.

I am currently on Att personal grandfathered unlimited plan.
I've read that some business plans might have better international coverage.
Is there any truth in this?
It's always unlimited in Mexico everything since they own ATT. MXOne drawback though is of course they want you on ATT MX. However they still allow Telcel roaming because they have more overall coverage. Major drawback when on Telcel the speed is severely.throttled but still unlimited but there's just more coverage in general also more 5g but can't use it please note: Highly recommend getting manual Network selection added to your account this way that you can just change it when you need it but just keep in mind that tell cell speed is heavily throttled and sometimes basically uses but you'll have coverage
Premium or Extra.
You can be either on the starter, extra or premium and don’t listen to the sales persons that tells you that premium gives you better coverage I’m an AT&T employee advanced tech support and they all give you the same coverage only difference is the amount of hotspot with each plan
I’ve been with att for forever and have the most expensive plan possible. I’m tired of paying so much for a phone. Any recommendations on which plan is the best ?
Homie, only you can answer that. What are your needs? Look at the plans and if you can live with the cheaper ones, switch.
that is nowhere near enough information for someone to recommend a plan to you. call the provider or go in store and let them access your account and ask you some questions to recommend anchange
The fuck dude look at the plans on your app and change it ?
Check their prepaid plans. That’s where the deals are and no surprises.
best AT&T plans in 2025
Key Considerations for AT&T Plans in 2025
Data Needs: Assess how much data you typically use. Plans often range from limited data to unlimited options. Choose a plan that fits your usage to avoid overage charges.
Family vs. Individual Plans: If you have multiple lines, family plans can offer significant savings. Look for shared data options that provide flexibility for family members.
5G Access: Ensure the plan includes 5G access if you want faster speeds and better connectivity, especially in urban areas.
Contract vs. No Contract: Decide if you prefer a contract plan with a subsidized phone or a no-contract plan that allows more flexibility.
Promotions and Discounts: Keep an eye out for promotional offers, such as discounts for auto-pay, bundling services (like internet), or switching from another carrier.
International Roaming: If you travel frequently, consider plans that offer international roaming or affordable rates for international calls and texts.
Recommendations:
AT&T Unlimited Elite: This plan typically offers unlimited data, HD streaming, and 5G access. It's ideal for heavy data users and families who want the best coverage and speed.
AT&T Family Plan: If you have multiple lines, consider the family plan options, which can provide significant savings per line.
AT&T Prepaid Plans: For those who prefer flexibility without a long-term commitment, AT&T's prepaid plans can be a great option, offering various data limits at competitive prices.
Always check AT&T's official website or contact customer service for the most current plans and promotions, as offerings can change frequently.
