What Redditors are Saying

Best Audio Interfaces for MacBook

TL;DR

  • Audient iD44/iD14/iD22: Great DI and pres, compatible with M1 Mac [1:1]
  • Motu M2/M4: Low latency, great sound, recommended upgrade from Scarlett [1:4][2:3]
  • Universal Audio Apollo: Low latency, proprietary plugins, good investment if already in UA ecosystem [5:1][5:3]
  • Apogee Symphony Desktop: High quality, fully compatible with M1 Macs [2:1]

Compatibility with MacBook

When choosing an audio interface for a MacBook, especially the newer M1 models, compatibility is key. Many users have confirmed that class-compliant interfaces like Focusrite Scarlett and Motu M2 work well with M1 MacBooks [2:2]. Additionally, Apogee products are known for their high quality and compatibility with macOS Big Sur and Apple Silicon [2:1].

Sound Quality and Features

Sound quality is a major consideration when selecting an audio interface. The Audient iD series is praised for its excellent DI and pres across all models [1:1]. The Motu M2 and M4 are noted for their low noise floor and latency, making them popular choices among users [1:4]. Universal Audio Apollo interfaces are renowned for their low latency and ability to run proprietary plugins on dedicated processors [5:1], although some users feel the preamps could be better [5:2].

Budget Considerations

For those on a budget, the Focusrite Scarlett series remains a solid option, offering good performance at a reasonable price [2:4]. However, users suggest that the Motu M2 might slightly edge out the Scarlett in terms of features and sound quality [2:3]. If budget allows, investing in higher-end models like the Apogee Symphony Desktop can offer superior sound quality and compatibility [2:1].

User Experience and Recommendations

Several users recommend sticking with Universal Audio Apollo interfaces if you already own UA plugins, due to their seamless integration and zero-latency tracking capabilities [5:3]. Other options include the SSL2+ and RME UCX II, which are also compatible and highly rated by users [1:5][3:2]. For beginners, the Evo series offers user-friendly features like mic gain assistance [1:6].

Audio Interface for MacBook?

ORIGINAL POST

Looking for a good audio interface that’s compatible with my MacBook. Preferably something that has at least two inputs. I know Focusrite is a huge one that’s usually suggested, but the audio I’ve heard from it sounds really empty and more glassy. I don’t know if that’s from poor audio engineering or what, but I’d be willing to try it if anyone has better experiences.

Lol this person can hear the difference between interfaces. No you can't. All interfaces sound the same without using software to analyze things, especially in 2021. All the entry level interfaces have great converters now.

Get the Motu m2. Latency is a non issue, it sounds great, and has a pretty low noise floor. If you have a bit more money go for the m4. Better internals and more channels. I will be upgrading eventually.

I’m using an Audient iD44 with an M1 Mac Mini.

No issues, great DI, great all round.

Same pres and JFET DI in all their models, so if you don’t need 4 pres, the iD14 and iD22 both sound just as good apparently.

Good audio interfaces that work on the M1 Macbooks?

Posted by Bluegunshot1022 · in r/macbookpro · 4 years ago

Hello, I am a novice voice actor and I am getting a M1 Macbook very soon because of how silent and powerful it is. But no matter where I look, I can’t find interfaces that actually work for the M1. I know some aren’t optimized for the M1, but still, there has to be one that works. Can anyone help me? Please and thank you!

Lol yeah. Also the Scarlett is pretty good I’ve had one for about 4 years now decided to get a new one and went motu m2 this time. From what I’ve read the motu m2 just slightly edges out the Scarlett but honestly both are great interfaces, still waiting on my motu to be delivered.

What's the budget? Apogee makes great (but a little pricey) stuff and their Symphony Desktop interface is fully compatible.

https://apogeedigital.com/home-feature-news/apogee-products-and-macos-big-sur-apple-silicon-compatibility-information

Older apogee interfaces seem to work as well, but the Maestro control software doesn't. They're working on that apparently. I have a Duet that I'm hoping still works because I love the thing. Will find out soon.

TB 1 and 2 are more or less the same except for the doubled bandwidth. TB 5 is downwards compatible to TB3.

So, if you just want a new one, ok. But if your interface is good enough, i would try the adapter.

The focusrite recommendations make me want to 🤮. It screams amateur, A/D conversion is terrible, preamp is awful and it’s running on usb connection just awful. Do yourself a huge favor and do your homework and take no one’s recommendations. You know your workflow. Get something that compliments that.

I thought it was one of the best comments in the whole thread.

Which audio interface should I get? (M4 Macbook Pro)

Posted by Comrade-Rabbit · in r/musicproduction · 8 months ago

I currently have a Universal Audio Apollo Twin MKII DUO Heritage Edition Thunderbolt 2. But I just bought a new 16 inch M4 Macbook Pro which has Thunderbolt 5 and the USB-C ports instead of the differently shaped old Thunderbolt 2 ports (I know I can use an adapter which I currently am, I previously had an intel Mac). So I want to get a new Audio Interface partly because of that and partly before tariffs are imposed. Should I just get a newer Apollo? I think it would be nice to have more than 2 inputs like the x4 Apollo. But I heard that Apollo's don't actually have the best quality pre amps. I know the whole "gimmick" of the Apollo interfaces was that they had processors inside of them so you could use their proprietary plugins with little latency. But now is that even an issue with the new M series Macbooks? And now since Universal Audio lets you use their plugins without buying their hardware anymore, it doesn't seem worth to buy. I would rather have an audio interface that is higher quality and sounds better. I'm looking for around the same price +/- of the x4 Apollo ($1600). It would also be cool to have something that also works on Windows and Linux, just in case. Thanks,

But I heard that Apollo's don't actually have the best quality pre amps. I know the whole "gimmick" of the Apollo interfaces was that they had processors inside of them so you could use their proprietary plugins with little latency.

I think very low latency is how they still manage to market their gear now, even though much cheaper interfaces have a low enough latency for most people. That, and up until they offered the plugin versions, people were used to their ecosystem. Even though there are plenty of alternative plugins.

But their success and widespread use probably had a lot more to do with CPU processing power. There was a real need to offload the effects from the computer. You'd have to have a fairly slow computer by today's standards, where you couldn't bounce all your audio before mixing and your computer wouldn't handle the effects. So that need is gone.

1 upvotes on reddit
FenceF · 8 months ago

Stick with the Apollo unless you need more IO 😀

The converter cable is negligent to the performance of the interface in my experience.

Also would assume you have already invested in some UA plugins; so may as well keep on getting the use from them.

There are certain situations where the zero latency tracking becomes super handy.

1 upvotes on reddit
DaggerStyle · 8 months ago

It doesn't matter how powerful your computer is they still can't operate at latency as low as Apollo. The converters are no longer an issue the pre amps are where the money is going....

No doubt. It just depends on whether or not someone needs the lower latency than what they can get with less expensive interfaces.

I know the whole "gimmick" of the Apollo interfaces was that they had processors inside of them so you could use their proprietary plugins with little latency. But now is that even an issue with the new M series Macbooks?

The processors in there mean that the plugins run on the Apollo interface.

It's basically a dedicated computer just for plugins. Just like your own computer, the Apollo's CPU usage can hit 100%.

Anyway, for those plugins your computer only shows the user interface. Your own CPU is spending 0% power when the Apollo is doing the processing.

And now since Universal Audio lets you use their plugins without buying their hardware anymore, it doesn't seem worth to buy.

That's why they've pivoted. It also used to be a sort of copyright protection.

I would rather have an audio interface that is higher quality and sounds better.

UA makes great audio interfaces. You're likely to solve more issues by getting better acoustics in your room or better monitor speakers. At a certain point the interface no longer is the limit.

Anyway, RME is very nice. Very neutral in terms of preamps, however, but the best support in the business, and top notch gear.

People are going to answer all types of shit. All you need is the computer, DAW, and some headphones. For headphones just get one pair, I like the ATHs, whichever you can afford. Everything else is just to look fancy until you know what you are doing and become efficient. Budget wise when the time comes AT and M-audio are legit and last years.

Save your money to max out the MacBook (ran/storage) and get whichever daw you want. I was on Logic for years but switched to ableton couple years ago and shit clicked more. Logic has a lot of goodies though, it’s all preference/learning styles.

I use Apple products personally. Went to music school and learned on all Apple products. Logic is pretty easy to learn ib my opinion. I produce everything in Logic, and I mix everything in ProTools. But I will say I learned ProTools in school, and it’s NOT simple to pick up, but it can be done.

Everything else in your list is cool. I wouldn’t buy any expensive mic unless you know what you’re doing. Look at SweetWater if you want to explore.

I also produce and mix in the DT 770s, and they are pretty fucking stellar in my opinion. Feel great on the ear!

I bought a used duet for 200 euros, a huge step up from the focusrite 2i2 not even in the same league. UAD plug ins are expensive as fk and waves ones do the same thing or even better. The dsp processors are weak as fk you’ll need like 2 satélites just to use a dozen plug ins and antelope has a shitty software.

I think a used duet is the best choice by a mile. I couldn’t decide between the zen go or the solo and decided they were both bad investments. The duet was just perfect

I had the Scarlett solo and upgraded it to the Clarett 8pre. It sounds beautiful. That air button is no joke.

2 upvotes on reddit
OxyRoses · 4 years ago

It works with the M1 Chip, you just need to go through a process in boot or whatever the fuck it’s called to permit outside developers crap.

UAD has a specific page to show install. If you allow access before you reboot at one point then you have to wipe your computer and reinstall your OS. It’s a pain in the ass but it’s worth it. Luna works on M1 too just run it in Rosetta... like everything else on it rn lol.

Also, I have an apollo x, but i’ve never tried any other UAD device so i can’t tell you how they comparatively sound. I love the dynamic range, clarity, and sound of my X tho! Love using the SSL channel strip!

I have an SSL 2+ and i love it. Amazing when you’re using it on a relatively dark mic and you use the 4K button. Amazing SSL sound that you never have to dial in. Sounds sort of like your sounds are slipping and sliding over one another. Absolutely would purchase again.

Friend had a scarlett focusrite solo and it was okay. But you’re much better off taking the investment at that point and getting a clarett because the mother fucking air button on that shit sounds gorgeous. tried the clarett at a studio. however tf it’s spelled.

Apollo’s are amazing though because you can always use the unision plugins to achieve a variety of those preamp sounds anyways! But the Apollo’s take more experience to dial in effectively and get EXACTLY the sound you’re going for.

The question I would ask would be, what are you using the preamp to do? if it’s one or two vocal layers and not a lot then maybe consider something that’ll be harmonically rich and bold. if it’s 12 layers a verse then probably find something much more subtle and clear!

Research the Sibilance sounds on all of your interfaces because it contributes to the sound of everything a TON!

i love SSL. 100% SSL for days on my vocals. Drums API since I’m hip hop. Neve when blending too rock and indie alt. SSL whenever i just want clean, clear, punchy, dynamic goodness.

I would 100% recommend getting a UAD if you can, wait till there’s a ton of plugins bundled with it.

if you want something cheaper i would take my SSL2+ again and again. You can record one channel left and one channel right for true stereo imaging. You can do some crazy things with that when micing instruments!

it’s only if you gave the computer access when it asks to give UAD software access or whatever tf through the preferences BEFORE restarting. If it works fine for you it works fine. If it says it can’t recognize your device on the M1 then that’s a likely reason why. (just when initially installing UAD software to computer)

A Behringer XR18 is much better value for money than an interface. It is an interface but it’s also a mixer meaning you can make better headphone or in ear mixes with EQ, compression and gate on every channel. Not to mention it’s got way more inputs than other devices that are purely interfaces so if you ever wanted to record with a band or run in ears for your band or even use it for FOH, you’ve got all your bases covered.

What good audio interfaces work well with M1 Macs?

I just realized universal audio interfaces like my Apollo 8 run through Rosetta on new M1 Mac chips. I don’t really want to mess with that, and think the UA ecosystem is too expensive in terms plugins.

What solid audio interface works well with M1 chips?

Something with at least 4 mic preamps that sound good.

But what’s the difference if it does run through Rosetta or not? Are you experiencing any issues with it? I didn’t notice even one with my Apollo.

Of course I understand financial thing cos as you said, uad plugins aren’t cheap, that’s a good point to get cheaper interface and plugins from whatever company you like.

Any interface will work with m1, no matter if software will run through Rosetta or not. Sooner or later every company will release software updates anyway.

If you looking for something on uad level then I would say RME or Antelope.

best audio interfaces for macbook

Key Considerations for Choosing an Audio Interface for MacBook:

  1. Compatibility: Ensure the audio interface is compatible with macOS. Most modern interfaces support Mac, but it's good to double-check.

  2. Connectivity: Look for USB-C or Thunderbolt connections for faster data transfer and lower latency. USB 3.0 interfaces are also a solid choice.

  3. Input/Output Options: Consider how many inputs and outputs you need. If you plan to record multiple instruments or vocals simultaneously, look for interfaces with at least 2-4 inputs.

  4. Audio Quality: Check the sample rate and bit depth. A good interface should support at least 24-bit/96kHz for high-quality recordings.

  5. Preamps: Quality preamps can significantly affect your recordings. Look for interfaces with high-quality preamps for better sound.

  6. Software Bundle: Some interfaces come with bundled software, including DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) and plugins, which can be beneficial for beginners.
