Best MacBook Accessories for Musicians

TL;DR Essential accessories include a multiport adapter, external storage solutions, protective sleeves, and audio equipment like headphones or earbuds.

Multiport Adapters and Docking Stations

Musicians often require multiple connections for various devices such as MIDI controllers, microphones, and external monitors. A multiport adapter is crucial for expanding the limited ports on a MacBook Air. Anker's multiport adapter is recommended for its reliability [2:2]. Additionally, the Kensington SD2500T docking station supports Thunderbolt 3 and can help overcome the MacBook's port limitations [2:3].

External Storage Solutions

Given the large file sizes associated with music production, external storage is essential. The Corsair EX400U external SSD offers fast data transfer speeds and ample storage capacity [2:3]. For backup purposes, a Samsung T7 drive can be set up with Time Machine to ensure your projects are safely stored [4:2].

Protective Sleeves and Cases

While opinions vary on screen protectors and keyboard covers, a sleeve is universally recommended to protect your MacBook from scratches and minor bumps during transport. Tomtoc sleeves are frequently mentioned for their quality and affordability [2:4][4:1][4:3].

Audio Equipment

For musicians, high-quality audio equipment is vital. Consider investing in good IEM earphones or AirPods for monitoring your mixes [5:2]. These accessories ensure you hear every detail of your recordings and mixes accurately.

Additional Accessories

A Magic Trackpad and Bluetooth keyboard can enhance your workflow when connecting your MacBook to an external display [2:1][5:2]. Microfiber cloths like those from Koala or Apple are useful for keeping your device clean without damaging its surface [2:4][2:7].

Got one in silver 16gb 512gb. I am gonna use it for recording my guitar. It’s so beautiful do I need any kind of case or screen protector ? I mostly use it in my room and I am very very careful with my devices. Just am using a keyboard cover which I will remove every time before closing the lid.

I just bought a sky blue M4 MacBook Air at the $849 price, I tried so hard to just go cheap and  get a windows machine (not that they're all cheap) but once I saw the price and the Air I had to have one.  I had a Pro back awhile ago. This thing is beautiful!  And fast, and quiet!

If you at all need a computer the $799 price is literally a steal.

So good.

I just gave some dude shit for his sky blue looking silver and then I see this silver looking sky blue and beautiful. 🤦🏻‍♂️ maybe I AM colorblind. Congrats on the purchase my friend! Take care of her but they are tougher than you think!

dont worry about a screen protector as its actually more likely to damage your screen due tothe minimal distance between the screen and body, its good that youre removing your keyboard cover when you close it, and about cases? if you have it in your backpack a lot it might be worth getting a sleeve

A multiport adapter would do, here's one from Anker:

I got Kensington SD2500T docking station and Corsair EX400U external ssd, both support thunderbolt 3 and work great, they really make up for the MacBook Air limitations.

Limitations? It has thunderbolt 4, right?

By limitations I meant lack of ports and expensive internal storage, I went for a thunderbolt 3 docking station because it is still very fast and cheaper than thunderbolt 4

If you don't like using the trackpad, then I would suggest getting a wireless mouse. I would also suggest getting a USB hub for any external devices you may want/need to use.

New to MacBook!

Posted by Mundane_Sundae8374 · in r/macbookair · 5 months ago

Hello!

I purchased my first MacBook earlier this week (Sky blue M4, 16GB/512GB, 13 inch) and I’m just wondering if there are any accessories you would deem essential?

I’m usually a big advocate for protecting my devices with cases and screen protectors wherever possible, but I have seen conflicting opinions on them for the MacBook.

I’d really appreciate any help!

As for essential items main ones are a backup drive to set up with time machine and a usb-c to usb-a dongle if you have any usb-a devices.

For time machine something like a samsung t7 is pretty good and you can get them for like $130 or so for a 2tb one (4x the size of your internal drive).

If you carry it in a bag, definitely also get a sleeve. The tomtoc one linked in another comment is great and isn't too expensive.

Smaller accessories? Actually nothing I can think of. Maybe some IEM earphones or AirPods. A nice sleeve to carry it.

Should I buy macbook accessories?

Posted by OddlyPeasaint · in r/Tech_Philippines · 3 months ago

I just bought a macbook and really want to explore new apple products. Pero hindi ko alam parang masyadong delicate yung product, nakakapanibago yung pagiging magaan nya at dahil galing sa windows, and daming nakakahilong bagay sa laptop na ito. Haha iykyk.

Ask ko lang if it's advisable to buy laptop case ba yun? And screen protectors and keyboard cover ng laptop. Hindi magiging cause ito ng pagbilis na pagkasira ng product? Thank you!

Laptop protection

Posted by EricVellekoop · in r/drums · 6 months ago

Sup drummers,

In my band Blossom & Wither (instrumental post-metal) we play with a backing track using my MacBook Air M2. Now that's my baby, I love that device. It sits on its own stand, exposed and all, beside me near my hi-hat.

I'm afraid I'll drop my drumstick someday and it'll land on my Apple computer and damage the screen or worse, so I'm looking for protection, something to put over it whilst it's still operatable. I've searched Bax Shop and Thomann, but I can't find anything. Have you got a tip for me? Please let me know!

Keep practicing and keep using the best metronome app there is,

Eric

I wanna follow this thread for some good ideas. I would actually like to have a bit of a 'station' of sorts where I have my laptop and audio interface, my iPad for chart reading, my beltpacks for IEM and headset mic, and accessory tray for quick switch sticks and my phone and water bottle etc.

If I can fit all that in a unit with a small footprint, good accessibility, and proper protection, I'd be so happy.

I kinda agree with this. I use a laptop that's not exactly cheap either and I am looking to protect it better, but in many ways it would probably better just to get a beater laptop. It does depend on what you use to play the backing tracks. Myself, I just have .WAV files with backing tracks hard panned left and click hard panned right, and I play those through VLC with some nifty fool-/failproof config. I could easily get a much more basic laptop to do that for me. Hell, I HAVE 2 laptops like that :-P

1 upvotes on reddit
P
punkyguy · 6 months ago

Agree. And it's not just whilst your playing, toting it around in public in and out of cases will add wear-and-tear. Plus increased likelyhood of it being stolen or dropped by accident.

Any cheap laptop can play a backing track, so why use an expensive one? I use a cheap tablet, albeit for click rather than backing tracks.

If you really must use your laptop, my suggestion would be one of those covers you put over food when it's outside. All different shapes and sizes, but should be easy enough to find one that fits over a MB air, if you almost close the lid.

punkyguy · 6 months ago

Also, I have wire mesh covers I use for BBQs. It might disrupt the wifi. If that matters to you, a quick google brings back plastic solutions. You could also tether the cover down to the stand for extra security

1 upvotes on reddit
Key-Patience-3966 · 6 months ago

I have an M1 for stability reasons -- it never crashes like my Dell XPS15 did. Never. So I wouldn't recommend getting a cheaper laptop. You can set your laptop to not fall asleep when you close the lid, so that could be some cheap protection. I've played a lot of gigs and never hit my laptop on the left.

The highest spec you can afford is the best.

They will all be fine. Cheaper ones might require more track freezing than the more expensive ones but their all good.

If you want more future proofing find a Windows laptop. As you'll get more hardware for your buck.

But either way you'll be good.

AI Answer

🤖

best macbook accessories for musicians

Key Considerations for MacBook Accessories for Musicians

  1. Audio Interface: Essential for high-quality sound input/output. Look for options like Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 or PreSonus AudioBox for reliable performance.

  2. MIDI Controller: A compact MIDI keyboard (e.g., Akai MPK Mini or Novation Launchkey Mini) can enhance your music production capabilities, allowing for easy control of virtual instruments.

  3. Headphones: Invest in a good pair of studio headphones (like Audio-Technica ATH-M50x or Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro) for accurate sound monitoring during recording and mixing.

  4. External Hard Drive: Musicians often deal with large audio files. A portable SSD (like Samsung T7 or SanDisk Extreme) provides fast storage and backup options.

  5. DAW Software: Ensure you have a reliable Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) like Logic Pro X, Ableton Live, or GarageBand for music production.

  6. Laptop Stand: A sturdy, adjustable laptop stand can improve ergonomics and airflow during long sessions.

  7. USB Hub: A multi-port USB hub can help connect multiple devices (like MIDI controllers, audio interfaces, etc.) to your MacBook.

  8. Microphone: A quality condenser microphone (like the Audio-Technica AT2020 or Shure SM7B) is crucial for recording vocals and instruments.

Recommendation: Start with an audio interface and a MIDI controller as these will significantly enhance your music production experience. The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 paired with the Akai MPK Mini is a solid combination that many musicians find effective. Additionally, don’t forget to invest in good headphones for accurate sound monitoring!
