What Redditors are Saying

Best VST Plugins for Mac

TL;DR

  • Paid: UAD Spark, Soundtoys, Serum 2, Fabfilter Pro-Q, Soothe 2
  • Free: Valhalla, Tokyo Dawn, Surge XT, LABS, Vital

Popular Paid Plugins

Several paid plugins have been highly recommended across discussions. UAD Spark and Soundtoys are praised for their creative capabilities [1:1][1:4]. Serum 2 is frequently mentioned as a top choice for sound design [3:1][3:3]. Fabfilter's Pro-Q and Pro-R are noted for their quality in EQ and reverb processing [3:1], while Soothe 2 is highlighted as essential for vocal processing [3:6].

Recommended Free Plugins

For those looking for free options, several users have suggested high-quality free plugins. Tokyo Dawn offers stunning EQ and compressor plugins [1:2]. Valhalla's Room and Delay are widely used for their exceptional sound quality [1:3]. Surge XT and LABS are also popular choices for free synthesizers [5:1][3:1]. Vital is another favorite for its powerful synthesis capabilities [3:5].

Special Mentions

Some users have pointed out specific plugins that stand out for certain tasks. Decapitator from Soundtoys is frequently used for saturation effects [1:5]. The BBC Symphony Orchestra plugin offers a comprehensive set of orchestral sounds for free [5]. Additionally, Spitfire LABS provides a wide array of unique instruments at no cost [5].

Considerations Beyond the Discussions

When choosing VST plugins for your Mac, consider compatibility with your DAW and whether the plugins support your Mac's architecture (Intel or Apple Silicon). It's also important to assess your needs—whether you require plugins for mixing, mastering, or creative sound design—and choose accordingly. If you're new to music production, starting with free plugins can be a great way to explore different sounds and techniques without financial commitment.

ORIGINAL POST

I'm sure this has been posted a bunch but I'm looking for some good plugins for my Mac, currently running studio one. I have a lot of good Vst's, trillion, omnisphere, etc. But I'm still using the generic compressors and eq's and delays and stuff that come with S1.

Any suggestions would be great!

Cramit is a multiband compressor that I really dig.

Spitfire Audio's LABS instrument series is really cool too.

MAutoPitch is a free autotune/formant shifting plugin that I use a lot.

Decent Sampler is a pretty unique sampler made by this one youtuber, and he releases soundpacks for it based on strange instruments he finds and samples.

ZAK Sound's Retro Keys VII is an instrument plugin that emulates oldschool electric pianos, good for softer jazzier beats.

Surge is an insanely powerful free synth, def check it out.

OctaSine is a modular synth plugin, you can mess around with modules similar to old Moog and Eurorack synths and get some interesting sounds going.

I'd suggest grabbing the entire MeldaProduction suite from pluginboutique for free. It's basically an extra set of stock plugins. A lot of them blow Ableton's stock plugins out of the water (no offense to Ableton, their stock plugins are great lol)

I'm assuming your relatively new to producing?, unfortunetly I'm unaware of free mac vst's however alot of paid ones do offer trial versions, usually they come with some type of limitation like playing a static kind of noise every 20 seconds or only working for 20 minutes before you need to start up a new instance of it, however if you get yourself into the habit of bouncing your audio (rendering to wave) which is just good housekeeping and reduces resources on your mac you should be able to play with some of the best plugins without spending a penny, from my experience preset packs work flawlessly also with the trial versions, I little tip also if you do decide to do this I usually keep a copy of the midi data along with the wave file and remove the synth from the midi version and rename it to whatever synth I used followed by preset name, I hope this made some kind of sense.

[QUESTION] What are the best high quality guitar FX plugins for Mac?

Posted by gomesnorte · in r/Guitar · 4 years ago

I have a MacBook and use Garageband and Bias FX2. I'm now cherry picking some great, high quality separate FX plugins, like Valhalla DSP. Aside from the "basic" effects I'm also looking for more creative FX like some of the modern pedals that allow you to create more out-there sounds.

Any suggestions?

Look if you want a great Swiss army knife there is Helix Native.

But there are a million different specialist plugins that people use.

For instance - i am In Love with several of the different effects from Soundtoys.

This list is mostly for amp sims but many of them do have a set of fx. Helix Native has a ton of great fx.

For reverb the Fractal FAS-FX Reverb is excellent. Way more natural sounding than ValhallaRoom for example.

Looking for plugins

Hello! Recently, I've gotten into composing cinematic-ish music, and I'd like to know if any of you have good plugins recommendations.

Also, I'd like some recommendations for drumset plugins as well (preferably for metal).

Thanks in advance!

Tons of Kontakt librariesare geared towards cinematic styles. Especially from the likes of Spitfire Audio or Audio Imperia.

There's also a Braaam VSTi, I forget the name but it is pretty good.

best vst plugins for mac

Key Considerations for Choosing VST Plugins:

  1. Compatibility: Ensure the VST plugins are compatible with your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and macOS version. Most modern plugins support both 32-bit and 64-bit systems.

  2. Type of Plugin: Identify the type of plugins you need:

    • Synths: For creating sounds (e.g., Serum, Massive).
    • Effects: For processing audio (e.g., reverb, delay, EQ).
    • Sample Libraries: For realistic instrument sounds (e.g., Kontakt libraries).
  3. Sound Quality: Look for plugins known for high-quality sound and versatility. User reviews and demo versions can help assess this.

  4. User Interface: A clean and intuitive interface can enhance your workflow. Try out demos to see which interfaces you find most comfortable.

  5. Support and Updates: Choose plugins from developers who offer good customer support and regular updates to ensure compatibility and new features.

Top Recommendations:

  1. Synths:

    • Serum: Highly regarded for its wavetable synthesis and user-friendly interface.
    • Massive X: Offers a wide range of sounds and is great for electronic music.
  2. Effects:

    • FabFilter Pro-Q 3: A powerful EQ with a clean interface and advanced features.
    • Valhalla Room: Excellent reverb plugin known for its lush sound.
  3. Sample Libraries:

    • Native Instruments Kontakt: A versatile sampler with a vast library of sounds.
    • Spitfire Audio LABS: A free collection of high-quality instrument sounds.
  4. Mixing and Mastering:

    • iZotope Ozone: Comprehensive mastering suite with various modules for finalizing tracks.
    • Waves SSL G-Master: Emulates the classic SSL console sound for mixing.

Recommendation: Start with a few essential plugins based on your specific needs, and consider investing in a versatile synth and a high-quality EQ. This combination will give you a solid foundation for music production on your Mac.
