What Redditors are Saying

Best Audiophile Headphones

Hifiman Arya Stealth

The Hifiman Arya Stealth is frequently recommended as a top choice for audiophiles. It offers excellent sound quality and is considered a great value for its price, especially when purchased open box or refurbished [1:1][1:2]. Users have praised it for its ability to handle a wide range of music genres, from jazz and acoustic to hip hop and R&B [3:1]. However, some users have noted that the build quality may not be the best compared to other high-end headphones [1:2].

Sennheiser HD600 and Variants

The Sennheiser HD600 series is another highly recommended option for those seeking audiophile-quality headphones. These headphones are known for their neutral sound signature, making them suitable for a variety of music genres [2:2]. They are particularly appreciated for their clarity and detail, although they may lack in bass response compared to other models [1:4]. The HD800S, while more expensive, offers an even higher level of sound quality [1:2].

Meze 99 Classics

For those who prefer a warmer sound with a bit of extra bass, the Meze 99 Classics are recommended. They are particularly suited for genres like hip hop, R&B, EDM, and pop [3:3]. Besides their sound quality, these headphones are also praised for their aesthetic appeal [2:2].

Audio-Technica ATH-R70x

The Audio-Technica ATH-R70x is highlighted for its versatility, performing well in both gaming and music listening scenarios [5:3]. It offers good soundstage and imaging, making it a solid choice for competitive FPS gaming as well [5:2]. This model is recommended for those looking for a balanced headphone that doesn't compromise on music quality.

Considerations for New Audiophiles

For those new to the audiophile world, it's important to consider your personal preferences and the types of music you enjoy. While high-end headphones can offer exceptional sound quality, they may not always align with your preferred sound signature. It's often suggested to try different headphones at an audio store if possible [3:1]. Additionally, investing in a DAC and amp can significantly enhance your listening experience [1:7].

I don't know what Flair I should pick, but I want to buy really good headphones I'm willing to pay up to 700 dollars maybe more if its worth it, I'm in the netherlands but I dont mind having it send over from anywhere in the world. I listen to almost every Type of music and i am always listening. But I have no Idea what Type of headphones I should get and which has the Best quality of audio, I want to hear every single sound in a song and get lost in it. I will be using it at Home with my Phone and also using it with my record player, I have no Experience with headphones, airpods are the best I ever had. Most of the time I use speakers though.

There are a few approaches. Your description would make me lean towards Hifiman Arya, which can be had discounted on Hifiman's website. They have open box, refurbished offers for around 500 eur. The downside of Hifiman is that they're not the best built headphones out there, although when it comes to sound per the money, you are not getting anywhere near that level until $1500 for HD800S.

You may want to also get some DAC and amp with your headphones. Some nice dongle is enough, especially one that can deliver enough power and also has an onboard PEQ. Qudelix 5k would be my vote. It also has bluetooth if you need it. Optionally you can find a desktop box, which would be a longer lasting solution. If your record player is purely analog, then you'll probably need an amp for your Hifimans. The extra power is mostly for adding some bass shelf if you need it. Apart from it, their tuning is delightful.

Other options outside Hifiman? Sennheiser HD660s2 is like the polar opposite - exceptional longevity. There are 20 year old HD600 models being still sold on Ebay. They don't have as expansive and detailed sound, but they still are pleasant and musical, with warm and darker presentation. They also benefit from some PEQ, because the lows are lacking.

If you prefer heapdhones with perfect lows straight out the box, then consider Aune SR7000. I personally would add some highs to them in PEQ, but they are worth their price. They're a closed back model, but not really closed, more like semi-open.

Meze makes two models in their 100 series. They're not as detailed as other models I mentioned, but they have big soundstage, nice bass, dynamic sound.

$700 is a fairly large budget for a first time “audiophile” headphones. I thinks you have a ton of great options to choose from. It sounds like you have an eclectic taste in music, it may help listing a few of your favorites just to give people an idea of what sort of frequency response you are looking for.

Also, more information on your record played and its headphone out mat help as well, if it’s an older system I’m guessing it will have plenty of juice to power most headphones.

With that being said I’m going to give you a kind of boring bet still solid recommendation, the HD600. It sounds pretty good for most genres, except for EDM. Is not nearly as hard to drive as people make it out to be, you can use it with an Apple dongle and a phone, but it will clear up a little with some more juice. You’ll have plenty of buffer left for an Amp if you decide to take that route.

With that being said there’s a lot of great options in that price range now, if honestly lean towards the one you think will be most comfortable on your head.

I listen to quiet a bit of Pink Floyd, David Bowie, and the Dertones 600 works great for for that of music and is a solid performer in most genres. I’m not super familiar with Mac Millers music, but from memory like a lot of hip hop it has quite a bit of bass/sub bass in it. The one area that the 600 is weak in my opinion. I don’t think the bass is nearly as bad a as some people make it out to be, it has decent texture and can thump, but does lack in quantity. Not a basshead headphone.

I’m looking for a great set of headphones. I mainly listen to hip hop, r&b, EDM and pop.

I’m looking for the best headphones without having to do much EQ adjustments. I’m not very knowledgable with this stuff but I’d like to enjoy my music at the best quality possible at home. Budget is around $1000

“The best headphones without having to do much EQ adjustments” is something only you can answer. That said I don’t think you need to get anywhere near $1000 to get where you want.

Hip Hop, R&B, EDM, Pop - you probably want something with a bit of a V sound response, some extra bass, maybe a little on the warm side, but still technical.

Meze 99 Classics or 99 Noir would be my immediate go to in your case. Also consider the Focal Azurys. I wouldn’t go any higher than that, to be honest: there is PLENTY of great stuff at $550 or under that would get you exactly where you want. Higher price != better.

Big tip: try to find used. This is a good way to experiment with higher tiers of equipment at a lower price, and DOES get you more knowledgeable about what you really enjoy. After that, that’s when you go spending the big bucks. For example: a new 99 Noir plus maybe a Sennheiser HD600 would come in at under $1000, and leave you plenty for an inexpensive amp to help drive them better. Those are also different enough that you could really start to see what you like and what you don’t, and when.

For context, I’m all for people spending their money on stuff they love and stuff they want to learn about. That’s how I ended up with my collection which… is decent. But as someone who rotates between $80 and $4000 headphones, my recommendation is definitely to buy used, buy a few, and see what you like. You can then sell and recoup most of your money.

Hi-fi headphones are not developed so that you have to EQ your sound at home, but with a certain sound signature in mind. Whether you like it is another question. You can't even generally say the more expensive the less EQing is needed. It doesn't work like that. It would be ridiculous, wouldn't it? So it's purely down to the subjectivity of your own needs, not the headphones, whether they fit as they are or whether you want to EQ them. 🤷🏻‍♂️

For that kind of money I'd recommend going to an audio store and checking out a few.

You might not be able to audibly tell the difference between a $500 and $1000 headphone and may be better off having headphones with different sound signatures instead. I always considered myself a base head, after getting the Hifiman Arya Stealth I was surprised by how much more I enjoyed Jazz & Acoustic music

Headphones for listening to music

Posted by yazdankh · in r/HeadphoneAdvice · 6 months ago

Hope everyone is well. I’m looking to get a top of the line pair of headphones to listen to music as it was intended to be.

I’m absolutely obsessed with music, managed to hit 220k minutes last year; I listen to all sorts so I want a pair that can allow me to experience the whole spectrum. Some headphones/ earphones I’ve had previously & still have are the AirPod max, AirPod Pro 2 and Beats Solo buds.

It can be wired or wireless, I’m not too fussed on that. I will be listening to it on my laptop (MacBook Pro & iMac) and my iPhone.

I don’t have a budget in mind so go wild as I want to get a pair of headphones that will last a long time and allow me to listen to the songs I love to their full capabilities.

If you have any further questions feel free to ask me below.

Thanks

Edit: been advised to put a budget, would ideally be less than £2.5k. Thanks

Let me rant a bit before giving the advice. Since you start from a very mass market oriented baseline (airpod and beats), it is not automatic that you are going to like headphones that are TOTL but may sound very different from what you are used to: listening to more neutral and detailed-oriented headphones sometimes is an acquired taste and, being a very subjective hobby, it is difficult to advise the best one for you without knowing what your preferred sound signature should be and which music you are going to use that with.

with that in mind, I would suggest one of the following approaches:

1 - If you are willing to wait a little bit more, start with a couple of used headphones around the 500/600 mark covering the wide spectrum of the drivers in order to be able to pinpoint what you like about them and what you don't. Hifiman Arya (or Ananda) for planars, Focal Clear (the old model) for DD and why not even one or 2 good IEM to see if they work better for you. Buying and selling on the secondary market usually doesn't cost too much in each trade and you are able to build the necessary experience to drop the 2.5k onto something that really is the best solution for you

2 - If you are not willing to wait, then at least dedicate an afternoon in one of the most prominent audio store in your city and try each and every model you can. If you explain to the shop what you are looking for and how much you are willing to spend, it shouldn't be a problem at all. First impressions are still partial, but it is at least better than buying blindfolded

Good luck and remember to buy with your ears and not just looking at the pricetag/general consensus and reviews. If during your journey you happen to like best a 30$ wonky sounding headphones, so be it; don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

yazdankh · OP · 6 months ago

I hadn’t thought about it from that perspective. You’re right, I’ll start lower and see what I like and build up from there. Thank you for the input

Audiophile Headphone Recommendation

Posted by BalanceOne83 · in r/HeadphoneAdvice · 2 years ago

Hey everyone, I'm pretty much brand new to the audiophile headphone world other than the research I've gathered over the past few days yet, I'm still unsure if the headphones and amp I've selected are right for me. I feel like every pair of headphones I've come across just gets ripped apart in the comments so its been tough for me to truly find a headphone that a majority of people like.

Regardless, the combo I've ended up at is the Audio-Technica ATH-R70x paired with the IFI Zen Dac V2. The main purpose of these headphones will be FPS gaming 90% of the time. However, from what I've heard most of the headphones that are good for gaming suck at everything else, which is what I don't want. I want a headphone that's great for gaming but also sounds nice for music. My budget is anywhere between $300-$1000. Any advice or recommendation would be great. Thanks.

For FPS gaming, which I play competitively, that headphone is perfect.

Crinicle says is good for FPS with good soundstage and imaging.

Others voted for it here:

To take it to next level, I use the FREE Steelseries SONAR EQ software for PC. It has prebuilt packages for FPS games. Also it allows distance and surround disabling. Go stereo. And in the game audio, use home theater to get most out of less compressed channels.

What you've read is half true. Good headphones, like the R70X, will be good at music and gaming. Any fundamentally good headphones will be good at gaming. Any headset that totes its ability at gaming but never mentions music is usually just a waste of money.

If you can visit an audio shop where you can try several different types and makes of headphones. Take your time if you are lucky enough to more than one dealer in your locality or are willing /able to travel go to as many as you can. When you find the right set of phones and listen to them in the flesh, and that music goes straight to your heart you will know that they are the ones. Of course you can read reviews or visit forums like this but no-one knows your sound better than you. Good luck in your search.

I am in the market for new headphones, and did some research. There is indeed a lol information out there and not always easy to find what's relevant for you. As others said the quality is in the ear of beholder, so knowing your needs will help you navigate. What do you need headphones for, you didn't mention music. If is music, then which music? What's going to drive those headphones? For example I will spend the same amount of money on DAC as on headphones.

Open headphone don't isolate neither you from your environment nor your environment from your music. I got open as I WFH alone in the room...

Theres no objective. The hobby is completely subjective, things you might enjoy might not be things others will. Now there are objective qualities like build quality, technicalities, etc. Just comes down to what your preferences are, and if you arent sure that just means you need to experiment.

Best beginner audiophile headphones?

Posted by Ripjaw564 · in r/HeadphoneAdvice · 2 years ago

I was wondering what "audiophile" headset I should get coming from a Razer Blackshark V2 and wanting a new awesome listening experience. I don't want to spend more than $300 - $400 AUD for a headset and an amp/DAC, which sounds a bit constricting but I think it should be enough to get a decent headset. I listen to metal, especially the heavier stuff such as deathcore, and I've been listening to a lot of sleep token recently which isn't as metal but inspired me to buy a new headset as there's a lot of detail in their music. I also game a lot, but that isn't as important as listening to music for me.

I was looking at the DT 990 pro and the DT 900 pro x but I've heard many mixed opinions so I'm not too sure now, I've also seen people recommend the hifiman he400se for metal but I've heard they have quality control issues so once again I'm not too sure.

For an amp/DAC I was looking at the Fosi K5 but this is a topic I haven't researched as much about so I don't know what's best for me. I want one that can be used on PC and PS5.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

In the end it doesn't really matter what others are telling you. They are recommending things because it sounds good to their ears but that doesn't mean it will sound good to your ears as well. That's why you always have to make sure you'll be listening to a headphone in real life first instead of buying blindly.

For example: I am listening to metalcore, deathcore and rock mainly and got recommended the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro a while ago. So what I did was visiting a music store and found them. Sure the equipment is different to your own in the end (amp + DAC) so it could sound a bit different if you are using them but you will have still an idea of the sound of a headphone. For me the treble was too harsh.

So people told me that the 700 and 900 Pro X won't have this issue anymore.A few days ago I was finally able to test them out as well and my personal impression is that the "peak" is still there but it got smoothened out to a level where it's not hurtful to your ears anymore. But maybe there are people who are really sensitive and will say that it annoys them which is why you always should test them first. Maybe you are one of those people who is reacting sensible to it.

Another example: The Senneiser HD6XX (which is technically the HD 650) is getting recommended a lot as well. I personally can't understand the hype. They sounded veiled and way too dark to my ears but maybe there are people who like that. So you'll always have to keep these things in mind.

The upcoming Audeze MM-100 could be good for Metal but it will cost 399$ so that's a bit over your budget.

Hifiman is surely an option for Metal as well although you already mentioned the quality control issues. You can find a lot of people here who had issues with either dying drivers within 1 year of usage or a broken headband or other stuff. You have to ask yourself if it's worth playing that lottery. Also for some people Hifiman sounds a bit metallic and thin from what I've read and heard but like I already told you earlier: Everyone has a different hearing.

Yeah I'm trying not to let people's opinions sway me too much one way or the other as it's all very subjective but some of it is helpful, I'm still leaning towards a DT 990 or 900 as I don't think I'm as sensitive to the treble spikes people talk about. Hopefully I can try one of them out in-store somewhere

Keep in mind that you also can EQ those Beyerdynamic treble peaks fairly good. I did that with my Beyerdynamic MMX 300 as well, 10kHz at -12 db and the sound is great and not too sharp even on high volumes. For music you’ll probably wanna use a little different EQ. Just try it out.

The 58X was my first "audiophile" headphone, and I still love their sound. They sound good no matter what I'm using to drive them. IMO they are universal, but my ears are older and abused, so I'm probably not the ideal judge. After much reading, they are reviewed as one of the best bang for your buck choices. I'll just say, if mine broke, I'd buy them again.

I visited a music shop and tried several brands and models. I became a fan of Beyerdynamic headphones. No brand impressed me more (I tried AKGs, Sennheiser, Audio Technica, Sony, Yamaha, etc). When in doubt go for the DT 770 Pro 80 Ohm. The 990 is definitely not neutral, but people complain too much, reduce the treble just a bit with a software of your choice and you'll be fine.

4 upvotes on reddit
xXRyuuGinXx · 2 years ago

See this is what I meant with different hearing.

The HD 560S is a good headphone for it's price (if you can deal with the clamping force which always depends on how big or small your head is) but in my opinion (I heard this headphone several times in a music store) it is way too analytical and "boring" for Metal because it's flat like a board and very neutral.

The reason for this is because Metal music is often poorly mastered and the HD 560S is able to make you hear that. Newer productions might be fine but older stuff (even stuff from let's say 2009 - 2012 for example) can sound unpleasant.

But for gaming they are really good.

If there's one thing you take away from my comment, don't buy the Fosi K5.

I'd suggest you find an audio store to try these headphones out before you buy because - well, audio is an incredibly personal hobby where something that one person likes may not be to another person's taste. The Beyerdynamics are incredibly bright and as such, if you're treble-sensitive you won't like them - and since you are so new to the hobby, you really wouldn't know at this point.

Currently at your budget seems like the 560S is a great call - don't know how it pairs with your music but it doesn't need/want a DAC/amp so that helps keep you in your budget.

Welcome to the hobby!

Personally I would probably look towards something universal rather than geared just for metal, especially given how diverse metal can be, and how long good headphones can last. I actually kind of dislike V shape signature headphones for metal, because guitars are commonly set with mid cut for metal, and I like guitars to be thick and energetic. So I would likely consider Sennheiser HD58X (if you can get them without considerable additional expense) or even HD560S.

That should leave enough for Topping DX1 which runs on AK4493 with XMOS XU208, and is capable of 3.89V. While the total power is not crazy, it is respectable, and it should be able to take HD58X just above 115dB which is a lot (and around 120dB for HD560S). However I do not know how PS5 handles USB DACs and DX1 doesn't have optical.

What is the most popular audiophile headphone?

Posted by HeyCharmz_ · in r/headphones · 4 years ago

You hear about brands all the time like Beats by Dre, Audio-Technica, Bose, etc., but what Audiophile headphone is the most popular? Not the brand, but the actual headphones.

If you include gamers, I suspect it could be the Beyerdynamic DT770 or 990. Otherwise the 6XX.

Not the 58x?

Drop's site says that the 6XX has sold twice as many as the 58X.
The original 650 has probably sold billions too.

Best audiophile headphones for around 400?

Posted by Old_Man_Balls_ · in r/HeadphoneAdvice · 1 month ago

I want to start saving up for my first pair of really nice headphones. Price range is $300-$400. I can provide a list (big or small) of artists and genres I listen to, as I will only use them for music. I also record and make my own music so I'd also like a pair that I could use for that as well. I would prefer for them to be closed back and wooden (if I can get some for this price point). The current pair of headphones I own are the Audio Technica ATH-M20x's ($59 USD), which are what I use for listening to and recording music.

For closed back and wooden you might not be able to be able to get better than the Fiio FT1 even at the top of your budget. They really are good and *really* good closed backs are gonna be expensive. At least as far as I'm aware, but others might have a better answer.

The meze 99 classics and if you could get that boom mic from meze. Then you have a gaming headphone and a music headphone all in one

Good suggestion. I use that boom mic with my FT1 for gaming.

Thanks, I will look into those. Do you want me to list some stuff I listen to for reference or would it matter?

It certainly does help us point to a particular sound signature that you might prefer. But it doesn't have to be an extensive detailed list.

One thing to consider before buying anything is to see if you have a local audio store that carries any of the models mentioned. You'd be surprised how much testing your personal favorite tunes will help determine which final pair to buy, esp. if you bring along high quality samples to listen to at the shop.

I do not have an audio store within driving distance to me, I would have to order them online.

I’m not sure if you’re looking. For Bluetooth headphones with a wired option that have anc, passive noise canceling headphones like wired closed backs, or closed back wired headphones with anc (which I don’t believe exist)

1 upvotes on reddit
t3zlacoil · 3 months ago

If you want to cancel as much noise as possible I would recommend iems paired with ear muffs over top or just iems in general you can get a really good seal and block out almost all noise.

I’m not super knowledgeable on iems but maybe look at something like the offerings from brands like moon drop such as the blessing 3 or maybe Sennheiser possible brands like fiio or 64 audio I believe all of there brands have options in the 350 price tier.

Thank you for all the recommendations I’ll check them out, I just found out that they make Bluetooth headphones with a wired option lol, my main issue with Bluetooth is battery life mostly, and everything I listen to music on has a headphone jack anyway. Convenience of no wire matters not to me

This exactly how I feel I honestly don’t miss wireless got to tired of Bluetooth not working having to charge them or some other issue that I just decided to switch to wired fully

best audiophile headphones

Key Considerations for Audiophile Headphones

  1. Sound Quality: Look for headphones that offer a balanced sound profile with clear highs, mids, and deep bass. Open-back designs often provide a more natural soundstage.

  2. Impedance: Higher impedance headphones (above 300 ohms) typically require a dedicated headphone amplifier for optimal performance, while lower impedance models (16-32 ohms) can be driven by portable devices.

  3. Comfort and Fit: Since audiophile listening sessions can be long, choose headphones with comfortable ear pads and an adjustable headband. Over-ear designs generally provide better comfort for extended use.

  4. Build Quality: Look for durable materials and construction, as well as replaceable parts (like ear pads and cables) to extend the lifespan of your headphones.

  5. Brand Reputation: Established brands like Sennheiser, Audeze, Focal, and Beyerdynamic are known for their high-quality audiophile headphones.

Recommendations:

  • Sennheiser HD 800S: Renowned for its exceptional soundstage and detail, this open-back headphone is a favorite among audiophiles. It has a high impedance (300 ohms), so pairing it with a good amplifier is essential.

  • Audeze LCD-X: These planar magnetic headphones deliver rich sound and deep bass, making them ideal for critical listening. They are heavier but provide excellent comfort with their plush ear pads.

  • Focal Clear: Known for their clarity and dynamic range, these headphones offer a great balance between comfort and sound quality. They are versatile and can be used for both casual and critical listening.

  • Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro: These open-back headphones are praised for their analytical sound and comfort, making them suitable for studio use as well as home listening.

Takeaway: Choose headphones based on your listening preferences, whether you prioritize soundstage, bass response, or overall balance. Investing in a good headphone amplifier can also enhance the performance of high-impedance models.
