TL;DR
Bone Conduction Headphones
The Shokz headphones, formerly known as Aftershokz, are frequently praised for their bone conduction technology. This allows users to maintain situational awareness while enjoying music or podcasts, making them ideal for running and cycling [2:1],
[5:1]. They are comfortable and stay in place, even for heavy sweaters
[4:2]. Users appreciate the ability to hear ambient sounds like traffic, which is crucial for safety
[5:4]. However, some users note that audio quality may not be as high as traditional earbuds
[5:5].
Traditional Earbuds and In-Ear Options
For those preferring traditional earbuds, the Jabra Elite Active series is highly recommended for its excellent sound quality and secure fit during intense workouts [1:1],
[4:7]. The Powerbeats Pro offers a long-lasting battery and seamless connectivity with Apple devices, making them a favorite among runners
[2:2]. AirPods Pro are noted for their durability against sweat and superior noise cancellation, often surviving rigorous daily use
[2:3],
[4:9].
Noise Cancellation Headphones
For athletes seeking noise cancellation, Bose QuietComfort Ultra and Sony XM5 are top contenders [3:1]. These models provide exceptional noise-blocking capabilities, allowing users to focus on their music without distractions from external noises. They are particularly beneficial in environments with constant background noise.
Considerations for Glasses Wearers
While bone conduction headphones are popular, some users find them uncomfortable when wearing glasses or sunglasses due to interference with the over-ear design [5:10]. For glasses wearers, alternatives like Beats Fit Pro might offer better comfort with adequate transparency mode for situational awareness.
Overall, the choice of sports headphones depends on personal preferences regarding sound quality, situational awareness, comfort, and device compatibility. Each option has unique strengths catering to different needs and preferences during physical activities.
I'm in search of the best earbuds to elevate my sports and workout sessions. Whether I’m running, cycling, or hitting the gym, I’m looking for something that delivers outstanding sound quality, stays securely in place, and is built to withstand sweat and intense movement.
Have you tried any earbuds that have impressed you during workouts? I’d greatly appreciate your recommendations, tips, or personal experiences to help me find the ideal pair
soundpeats capsule 3 pro plus
very good sound decent ANC and LDAC support
Soundcore sport x20
Can you tell us your budget and what type of phone you are using?
I have had my Jabra Elite 75t Actives for years now and they’re perfect for sports.
I use them at the gym, running, but also cross-country skiing at temperatures going down to -20C.
Not sure if they sell these anymore, but Jabra’s Active series spans other models too. I think they won’t make any new ones but I vouch for these regardless.
So I looked up the post which is 2 years old and still I can not decide what should I get.
1)I never used any sport headphones so its hard for me to decide wheter it should be wireless earbuds or the ones like this ATH-SPORT10(I think this type with it around ear will make some pain in 1 hour) and this one will be not fitting well.
2)I have friend who is using Audio-Technika headphones for Djing and i tried them they are very good qualiy of sound but when running I can hear my steps very much.
Please recommend any running headphones up to 200$
Powerbeats Pro Wireless works best for me. Battery lasts forever, comfortable in my ears, can’t lose them. And apple chip is helpful when I want to connect to a different device (Apple TV, iPad, MacBook). I bought them for running but find I use it more and more for everyday use, and almost stopped using AirPods Pro
Ive run multiple marathons with airpod pros and battery lasts the whole race, and never slipped out. I have sweated through and destroyed every other “sweat proof” or “sport” rated headphone on the market, none of em last more than a few months with daily use. Except the airpod pros. Those have held up marvelously, not to mention the superior sound, noise cancellation, comfort, and secure fit.
Aftershokz. Stay on, comfortable, don't block outside noises (bikes, other runners etc), sound fine, decent charge/playing time.
I got a pair of these a couple months ago and really like them. They're very comfortable and I can hear everything going on around me. The battery is impressive, they last way longer than I thought.
Some races only allow open ear headphones for safety reasons. That's why I picked them up initially. Now run with them all the time. Mine are last year's model and we're only $80.
Yeah, Aftershokz are the best. Their customer service is amazing too. Mine died just shy of the warranty period and they ended up sending me 2 new pairs.
Aftershokz here too. Admittedly I don't use them for music, but for audiobooks they're great.
I switched from AirPod Pros to Aftershokz and am very happy with that decision.
Another vote for Aftershokz. I have a large head and feel zero pressure from them (I read another redditor complaining about this but never experienced it). I often forget they’re on once my music is off sometimes and once realized I was wearing them around a grocery store after an impromptu run to the store after a 10k run.
Sound is good volume wise and crystal clear but no loud thumping base. People nearby also can’t hear your music and it’s not damaging your ear drums.
Battery life is excellent when it’s not winter. Winter battery is fine, just not as impressive. Bluetooth works well and pairs easily with my Garmin watch so I can leave my phone at home.
Best part is they don’t get wax on them, don’t irritate your ears when you sweat and are so much safer. Hands down the most comfortable ear/headphones I have worn in my life.
I only use my Apple earpods for the gym (free weights) when I want to be ignored or situations I need to constantly take them in and out and want privacy… and airplanes.
Happy shopping :)
Yeah, love my Jabra Elite 65s. Use them at the gym, biking n jogging. Always stay tightly in, and sound awesome.
I’ve ran through three northeast summers with the same pair of airpods, surprisingly they just keep on going. Tough to say who is the exception to the rule, but when I first considered running with airpods I asked about them here, and a lot of people were saying they held up great with moisture. One of the main reasons I actually started using them on runs, since otherwise I would have assumed they wouldn’t hold up well. I’ve broken my fair share of ipod nanos and shuffles from sweat so I figured it would go that way too.
I use mine too and sweat a lot and have not had an issue as of yet. Been using for running for about almost 5 months I DO have issues with them coming out so I bought some ear loops for them and it works fine!
Based on the recommendation on this post I also went for Shokz and holly molly I glad I did! they are really life changing, so comfortable and sound is amazing (I use it both for music and audiobooks/podcasts) gave my AirPods pro to my wife, i'm in love with this thing!
edit: make sure you looking at their best and latest model, it's the number 1 on this list here: https://www.digitalspacebar.com/best-headphones-for-running/
Hey all,
So I’m a professional athlete and we have music playing quite a bit in the clubhouse speakers along with other loud noises. I’m looking for a quality pair of headphones that can blockout as much of the noise as possible(ideally all of it) while I have my own tunes on. Let me know any recommendations please!
*Budget not really an issue

The best in the game right now are the Bose QuietComfort Ultra over ears, alternatives that get close (I havent tried these but I hear these are close) Are the Sony Xm5 (although take notice of snapping hinges) Or if you are using an apple product then you should probably get the Airpod Maxes as those will work best with iphones.
Hello r/running,
I am an extreme sweater and feel like I've struggled to find a pair of headphones that I haven't had to fiddle with to keep them in place for my entire running career. Looking for any suggestions on headphones with the #1 priority of finding some that don't fall out. Heard a lot of great things about the PowerBeats and SoundSports but have been hesitant due to the price range. However, I'm open to them if they're truly the best.

Many thanks and happy running (with audio). :)

Best,
Aftershokz Titanium or Aeropex. They are bone conducting so you can keep your situational awareness while running and sweating. They don't fall out, rest comfortably on your head/ear, and you can still hear cars and dogs while you run.
I run with Titanium. Very light and never had a problem sweating on them.
Love my Aftershokz Air too!
I got the Titanium a few weeks ago and am loving them. Couldn't recommend them enough.
I've used PowerBeats, Air Pods, Air Pods Pro, Jabra 65t and I prefer the running with the Aftershokz Aeropex the most. I'm also a heavy sweater.
honestly I told myself for years I don’t need AirPods and then I was gifted a pair from a vendor and I don’t know how I lived. I’ve been running with them 6 days a week for a couple of years now and I’ve had them fall out maybe twice and even that was because of high wind. I sweat a lot from my head in the summer and they’ve never slipped out.
I retired a pair of Air Pods after using them for four years! Never had a problem with them until they couldn’t hold a full charge anymore!
I was gifted a pair of Power Beats and they are as good as advertised! Never had a problem with them falling out!
(Disclosure statement: My wife is Creative Pro Photographer for the Apple Store)
I got the Bose sound sports because amazon had them on sale for $99. Ran for about an hour this morning and had no issues with them falling out. The aeropex were nice, but for some reason I was getting a headache.
Yea, I run in these too. Love them. I do want to try the Jabras too.
I've spent more on headphones than I'm comfortable sharing. The Elite Active 75ts are absolutely my favorite. The sound is great, the isolation is great, they stay put when I'm really sweaty and running, and they're comfortable to wear all day. The 65ts were good, but the 75t just sound a little better and are a fair bit more comfortable.
I'm on my second pair after 2 years with the first. The battery does die out, and I do have to wear a headband when it's hot because the sweat dripping from my face does make them slip out. The second pair is so worth it though. I will be buying a new pair when these ones stop working for me.
I love my Jabras too!
What do you choose for your daily running journey? Are you happy with it? I'm looking for something with good sound and don't fall out while running. I'm willing to pay if you say it's truly worth buying. Hope to know your choices currently.
Anyone who says anything other than bone conduction headphones (shokz) just hasn't tried bone conduction yet. It is that much better. Running with earbuds is true insanity once you've tried bone conduction.
I use shokz like everyone else here but disagree still. The audio quality is average at best so depending on where you are running and if you enjoy music quality there are instances where in ear would be fine. I used to wear some in ear that were open back and they were pretty good but not as comfy over long distances which is certainly a strength of the shokz.
They aren’t ideal for glasses and sunglasses wearers. Maybe I’m overly sensitive to it but I can’t get sunglasses to sit right or not shift a little with bone conduction. If the over ear thing was super skinny I think it could work. I was surprised by the quality of the sound, especially bass, but I still can’t get comfortable. Beats fit pro work great for me and although transparency mode isn’t as good as open ear it’s perfectly adequate
Shokz OpenRun.
Even better are the new Shokz OpenDots - they have the advantage of not interfering with your sunglasses.
+1, they’re brilliant!
I do a lot of small country lane running, found myself before constantly looking behind me for cars etc… now there’s no need and the sound is pretty dang good.
These have changed my life, never listened to so much music, podcasts, etc while exercising
Just to chip in, I've had the same pair for I think 4-5 years. Battery is still great, they haven't broken, and I run between 40-120km a week depending on what I'm training for.
Only thing that broke is the little rubber charging cover.
Highly recommend!
Jabra Elite 8 Active… but they no longer make them. Once this pair dies, I’ll dabble in the shokz 🤙
I refuse to wear anything else! I'm not convinced I'll like Shokz because I want to enjoy the music I'm listening to and not have it muddled by wind and traffic
Been with various Jabra Elite Active for years. The best. So disappointed they are stopping production.
Shoks headphones! I hardly ever run with headphones. I like to be aware of my surroundings. These were a game changer for me. You can still hear what’s going on around you and listen to your music/podcast. Also I have ear issues so the air buds were not the best thing for me. They take like 5 seconds to get used to
I am sick of my iPhone headphones for my long weekend runs - they always fall out when it’s windy or when it’s hot. What are some of your recommendations for quality running headphones?
Second this. Any in-ear headphone that I have used leads to weird hot, sweaty ears. Aftershokz don’t have the best sound quality but I don’t find that super important when I am running and listening to podcasts or music on the last part of my runs. I am a convert!
agree completely. being able to hear surrounding noise as well as music is key for me while running. not looking for top sound quality and these aren’t that bad.
Second on this! I have owned Jabra, Bose, and Airpods. Jaybird are the only ones with enough customization options to fit comfortably and not fall out. I have worn them on everything from marathons to strength training workouts and they have never fallen out. I will say the jabras didn't fall out either, but they are so big that after a while your ears start to ache.
The vistas also fixed all of the problems with the jaybird runs. They now support a single-sided connection so you can listen with one ear in and leave the other ear free to hear the world around you, when the battery starts to die you toss that one back in its case and swap to the other ear.
When I'm running on any type of busy area I wear the right ear only so I still have my left ear open and towards the road to hear anything going on!
On top of all this the vista 2s have active noise canceling as well as a transparency mode that shut everything thing out or allow you to hear voice/traffic queues around you
Edit 1 : I ve had 2 pair of Jaybird x3’s for the last 6 years and love them wore the first pair out and had insurance on them and got the second pair and they are still going strong. Saving my pennys now for the Tara pros or the vista 2’s leaning towards the vistas for safety sake .
I love my AirPods, but I bought my husband aftershocks for bike riding and he says they’re great. They wrap over the ears and around the back of the head, so there is no way for them to accidentally slip off. They also let in other sound, so if there is someone coming up behind, you can hear them before they are on top of you.
Powerbeats Pro and it’s not even close…tried many. They are expensive but zero movement and fit is great for all that I’ve convinced. I’ve converted a bunch of friends. Sorry to make you spend so much money but if you don’t want to worry about headphones again…
I LOVE these, except for one caveat - the charging. I'll get home from a run, wait until the headphones are dry, and place them back in the charging case. I make sure they're seated properly and close the case every so gently. THEN, I wake up for a run the next morning and one of the headphones magically didn't charge. Thankfully they charge fast, so I re-seat them and wait 5-10 minutes depending on the charge I need, then I'm good to go. Very irritating though.
I use the wireless PowerBeats3 still if you need a cheaper option… anymore you can find a new pair for maybe $80. I’ve owned 3 pairs over the last 6 years now? One pair I use strictly for conference calls and the other 2 I’ve used for the gym, running, cooking, cleaning the house etc… they’ve held up well
Damn i just looked them up on ali express, i just had to claim warranty on my sony ear buds today and these defo look like a good pair of running headphones. Good shout bud
I just switched to aftershockz (the aeropex) from in-ear buds and I fucking love them. The sound clarity is so much better than I expected, I listen to a lot of books on tape and part of my route is adjacent to a highway (with some trees in between) and I still don't have an issue hearing.
Jabra Elite Active, 65 are solid, 75 even better
Another vote for Aftershocks. I have AirPod Pros for work but I 1000% prefer the Aftershocks for running outside. They’re more comfortable for long distances, hold up well to sweat, allow me to hear the outside world, and I never worry about losing them.
As the title says, i'm curious to know which headphones, across all price range, you currently use while running outside or at the gym. Or it would be also great if you let me know some other top options currently available on the market. Thanks.
I also recommend shokz or a similar bone conduction headphones. I have the shokz that are 2 separate buds but they also have a headset where they're connected. I use for running outside to hear my surroundings and in the gym. They also connect easily to my phone and my Garmin watch for music.
I have Shokz. Worth every penny.
In case this info is useful: the OpenRun (the midtier) are more waterproof than the OpenRun Pro (not sure about the newest pro 2's). This factored into my decision when I purchased because I don't really care about marginally better sound quality but I DO care about waterproofing because my area gets a ton of rain and snow throughout the year.
I chose Open Runs for the same reason. Just seemed more practical and I don’t care about the bass when I am running.
P.S. For indoor/treadmill runs I use a cheap pair of wireless headphones I picked up at Walmart a couple years ago. Packed Party was the brand, I think? I want to say they were like ten bucks. I doubt they're sweatproof so I'm sure they'll kick the bucket wayyyyyy before my Shokz, but they do the job for indoor stuff.
I have the open runs for that reason... I have sweated to death my old lower tier pair. In the company's defense, they sent me a free replacement pair that were an updated version. I also have a pair of open fits that I got for a present for myself a while back because they fit better under hats.
I run in the country where we have no sidewalks but a lot of free range dogs, people on tractors and the occasional lost cyclist from the neighboring county with more money. I'm not from that county but also wear them cycling because drivers seem to hate cyclists even more than they do runners... they fit great with my helmet and sunglasses both.
Shokz. I've had my pair since they were still Aftershokz. They just went on sale at Costco for $20 off so I made my husband get me a new pair for Christmas.
I love my aftershocks. They stay in place and let me hear my surroundings which is important where I live as bikes often fly by (illegally) on the sidewalk and you don't want to jump around a puddle and into a bike.
I was shocked to find out that bikes are legal on the sidewalks in my township.
The police department just posted an updated chart because there's been drama with kids on motorbikes riding in the streets. Turns out that normal bikes as well as e-bikes are legal on the sidewalks here.
Completely unrelated to running but those e-bikes are terrifying. Idc if it makes me sound like a grandma, I see 10 year old kids zooming past in those and I’m like, in what world is that a good idea? With no helmets!!
shokz
I’m just curious to know what headphones audiophiles use in the gym, lol. Me personally I just use my only pair of bluetooth headphones which is the JBL Tune 510BT. They are honestly unremarkable, but so am I. I like them just fine.
I previously owned the AirPods Pro 2, which were great for the gym, just like others have mentioned here. However, since I've increased my cardio workouts, I switched to the Powerbeats Pro as they stay in place much better during intense sessions and are more comfortable, especially when sweating.
Last summer I picked up the Jabra Elite 8 Active, and they've been fantastic. Being someone who tends to sweat a lot during workouts, these headphones have given me no issues whatsoever.
The audio quality is top-notch, they fit snugly and stay in place, and the battery life is impressive. They're the best headphones for the gym I've ever had (and I've tried quite a few).
Definitely recommend them if you're looking for solid workout headphones.
Edit: Added a link of a pretty good review I found, discussing all the pros and cons (which I mostly agree with)
Hey everyone! Just wanted to drop in and share the earbuds that have been total lifesavers for me during workouts. I've tried a bunch, but these three really stand out for their comfort, durability, and sound quality.
I've gone through a few, but here are my top 3:
Each has been great in its own way, just depends on what you're after!
wow you only commented this 3 hours ago, and this is the exact comment i was looking for after i google searched “best earbuds for the gym recommendations reddit”. life saver thank you for sharing🙏🏻
You are welcome! seems like it all aligned,
cheers and Happy New Year!
What was their recommendation? They’ve deleted their comment
It's honestly crazy that Google picked up on a comment made 3 months after the post within 3 hours haha
What was the recommendation
My current headphones are good for walks and my lighter lift days but don’t really cut it on runs (they fall a lot). Any recommendations? Right now I have just some off brand headphones from Amazon.
This the way. They're great running headphones. But they're also great regular headphones. You can't say that about most of the other sports-centric buds out there (just know the hear-through mode isn't quite there for running, so if you need audio for better spatial awareness, maybe go somewhere else)
This is the answer. Been using various iterations for 5+ years and they are only getting better. Sound quality is great and they don’t slip out of my ears (just make sure you test out the various in-ear size options before your first run)
SHOKZ OpenRun Pro is the only answer....they sound good enough for running and will keep your ears open for traffic and other runners/cyclists.
I was trying to be a hipster against the use of Shokz thinking they were no better than anything else. Just stuck to my apple AirPod pros. Until I started hitting my 20 mile runs during marathon training and realized the AirPods couldn’t last long enough and got uncomfortable after a few hours.
I caved and decided to give Shokz a whirl and there is no going back. They are endlessly comfortable, loud enough 98% of the time, Last plenty long, and I can hear everything going on around me. It’s a no brainer for running for me now.
100% I wasn't sure about them, then my wife got a set as a gift and I gave them a try. And bought a pair almost immediately after. I love my Jabra Elite Active 65t, but the passthrough just doesn't work well in wind or winter (anything covering them makes a racket). The Shokz completely fix that particular problem.
Team Shokz!
I like to hear my surroundings, and hate stuff in my ears. They usually fall out, or ones that do stay in start to hurt eventually (even my molded shop ear plugs start hurting, I’m a delicate flower)
for those who used Shokz, have you guys heard or used Mojawa Run Plus? I am curious what people thought about those.
If you don’t want to spend $180 on Shokz, you can get a $20 pair on amazon (it’s #5 on this list). It comes with like 10 different sized earbud tips so you should be able to find the best one. They wore out after about 1.5 to 2 years, but for $20, hard to go wrong. I’m on my second pair.
For running, consider earbuds that offer a secure fit and are sweat-resistant. The Jaybird Vista 2 is highly recommended. This model provides excellent stability during intense activities, superior sound quality, and durability against sweat and elements, making them great choices for runners who need reliability and comfort.
Ditch the off-brand woes! Finding the perfect running headphones is key. I suggest Jabra Elite 7 Active for extra grip and powerful sound. Earhooks and a snug fit keep them in place, while their IP7 water resistance handles sweat and rain.
People will make comments about the sound quality, and yes they don't sound as good as regular headphones, but I was almost hit by a car about two weeks ago when they ran a red light. Only reason I didn't is because I heard the tires squeal and literally sprinted out of the way.
After shaking off the adrenaline I thought about the headphones I used to wear that were over the ear headphones. I never would have heard the car coming.
So I will take the drop in audio quality for safety. Also, I find they are really comfortable and hardly notice them sitting on my ears. Which is why I would prefer them to an earbud type of headphone as well.
I highly recommend the Shokz OpenRun Pro. They’re lightweight, comfortable, and provide great sound quality while keeping you aware of your surroundings. The battery life is impressive too, making them perfect for long runs. If you prefer traditional earbuds, the Apple AirPods Pro or Bose Sport Earbuds are also excellent options with great sound and comfort.
Trying to stay safe out on early morning runs and would love to hear everyone’s recommendations on beat headphones that let in ambient noise!
Tried the Shokz bone conduction but they don’t seem to stay on my head well!
+1 for the jabra elite active, I even shower with them after finishing my run.
AirPod pros with the pass through option works great 👍
I have gotten more use out of my AirPods Pro than any other item I ever purchased. From running in transparency mode to traveling with noise canceling, taking zoom calls to even connecting to my tv when the girlfriend is working or sleeping, it’s a constant companion for me. These are so robust, versatile and switching between devices is so simple and easy.
Yep, I was hesitant to buy Bluetooth headphones for so long because I thought the connection would be spotty and they would fall out, sound wouldn’t be as good etc. Nope, the airpod pros work perfectly. It’s one of the few tech things I own that just 100% live up to expectations. So kudos to Apple there and I’m otherwise not a big fan of Apple. But these were a home run.
Yup. I try not to be an apple fan Boi because I truly don't care. But if you're already in their ecosystem, the airpod pros are just perfection. Like for sure the best product they've ever made
Thirded. I have both AirPod pros with pass through and Aftershokz and have to say I prefer the pass through.
+1 for the AirPods Pro 2. The sound is fantastic and the transparent mode works great.
+1 to the Jabra Elite 85t. The “hear through” mode pumps in outside noise through microphones in the ear buds, and is super helpful for hearing ambient noise while running.
I also love these, because unlike bone conductors, you still have access to a noise cancelling mode so these can be used for you normal everyday earbuds too, not just running/outdoor usage.
I’ve had mine for two years with heavy usage and they still are holding up great. Can’t recommend enough.
Can be bought for around $70 second hand if you want to give them a try.
I have an aging pair of Aftershokz, now just Shokz, I guess. Stick to my head like glue. I hope they last forever because they're the best thing since sliced bread. The inventor should be canonized. Hope you find a pair that fits you well!
Seconding this. Best running headphones I ever bought (probably the 6th or 8th) and I'm never going back.
I have a Garmin Forerunner 245m running watch, which holds my Spotify playlists and mp3s. It connects directly to my Aftershokz via Bluetooth - no phone required
I'm also quite happy with my Jabra Elite 7 Active. Hearthrough mode definitely lets you hear your surroundings on your runs.
best sports headphones
Key Considerations for Choosing Sports Headphones:
Fit and Comfort: Look for headphones that provide a secure fit, such as in-ear or over-ear styles with adjustable ear tips or hooks. Comfort is crucial for long workouts.
Water and Sweat Resistance: Choose headphones with an IPX rating (like IPX4 or higher) to ensure they can withstand sweat and moisture during intense workouts.
Sound Quality: Opt for headphones that deliver clear sound with good bass response, as this can enhance your motivation during exercise.
Battery Life: For wireless options, look for headphones with at least 6-8 hours of battery life on a single charge, and consider models with quick charging capabilities.
Connectivity: If you prefer wireless, ensure the headphones have a stable Bluetooth connection and a good range. Some models also offer wired options for reliability.
Additional Features: Consider features like noise cancellation, built-in microphones for calls, and touch controls for convenience during workouts.
Recommendations:
Jabra Elite Active 75t: These true wireless earbuds are known for their excellent fit, sound quality, and IP57 water resistance. They offer up to 7.5 hours of battery life and have a customizable equalizer.
Bose Sport Earbuds: Renowned for their comfort and sound quality, these earbuds are also sweat-resistant and provide a secure fit, making them great for various activities.
Powerbeats Pro: If you prefer ear hooks, these wireless earbuds offer a secure fit, impressive sound quality, and up to 9 hours of battery life, with an additional 24 hours from the charging case.
Choosing the right sports headphones ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences, but these options are highly regarded in the market for their performance and durability.
