TL;DR
Avoid Talcum Powder
When selecting a baby powder, it's crucial to avoid products containing talcum powder. There are health concerns associated with talcum powder, particularly its potential link to respiratory issues and other health problems if inhaled [4:1].
Popular Creams for Diaper Rash
Several creams have been recommended by parents for treating diaper rash effectively. Boudreaux's Butt Paste is frequently mentioned as a reliable option [2:1],
[3:1]. A&D Ointment is another popular choice, praised for both preventative and treatment purposes
[5:1],
[5:3]. Calmoseptine has also been highlighted for its effectiveness, especially in severe cases
[5:6],
[5:7].
Non-Powder Methods
In addition to creams, several non-powder methods can help manage diaper rash. Allowing the baby's skin to air out by giving them "naked time" is highly recommended [2:4],
[3:5],
[3:6]. Ensuring the skin is completely dry before applying any cream is essential, as moisture can exacerbate rashes
[2:6],
[5:1]. Using cloths with water instead of wipes can also reduce irritation
[3:3].
Other Recommendations
Some parents have found success with alternative treatments such as coconut oil and breast milk baths, which can soothe and moisturize the skin [2:2]. Zinc-based creams are also widely used for their protective barrier properties
[3:4],
[3:5].
My son gets red booty cheeks often, we apply corn starch each night to combat that. Well it's hard to apply sometimes so I decided to get a powder shaker. It works absolutely amazing and I get a giggle each night when I "season" his buns. Highly recommend corn starch for redness and getting a shaker to apply.
Not to be that guy but you really shouldn’t use cornstarch for diaper rash.
“Cornstarch (10%-98%) is formulated as a powder. It is widely believed to be a safe infant powder, but it may be hazardous. In one such case, a 1-month-old infant was brought to an emergency room because of poor eating habits and impaired breathing.5 The physicians ordered a chest x-ray, which revealed diffuse opacification in both lungs, with dark-blue polygon-shaped crystals visible on a Gram-stain. The crystals were eventually demonstrated to be cornstarch. The mother admitted that she used cornstarch powder during diaper changes. The physicians diagnosed cornstarch pneumonitis, cautioning that the careless use of the powder could lead to accidental aspiration with subsequent severe respiratory disease.
Another concern about cornstarch is that it may serve as a culture medium for Candida albicans.6 Because of this, the pharmacist should recommend against the use of cornstarch. Products containing cornstarch include Johnson’s Baby Pure Cornstarch with Magnolia Petals. The magnolia petals in this product are not approved for use as protectants. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends against use of cornstarch at any time as it can worsen a diaper rash with candidal infection.1”

My baby is 13 months..going on 14...what creams work best for your little one?? This never used to be an issue but he eating quite a bit which is causing a bit of poopy diapers..when i am at work my mother watches him and says she changes immediately after a soiled diaper. I recently bought triple paste on amazon. he has had aquaphor... desitin...A and D... just nothing seems to really work on his butt..what are your favorite creams for your baby? I know the zinc in diaper cream should help.but i feel like triple paste and destin make his butt more irritated :((((
Spending time outside of a diaper to air out his booty is great. I also dump breast milk into his bath and let him hang out and play. Then air dry after bath. I lather baby in coconut oil all over as our wind down routine, too, so some coconut oil gets in his butt too.
Layer aquaphor and then desitin very liberally on a dry booty then diaper
All of this 1000000%. As much bare butt time as possible. I did diaper off on her tummy on her mat and used a hair dryer on low to really dry it out. Even 10 mins without a diaper every 5-6 hours will make a huge difference. Also I used my peri bottle from the hospital to spray off her bum with warm water instead of using wipes. Then air dry. Then icing her butt like a cupcake with sudocrem. Was gone in 1.5 days! You can also try going up a size in diapers to give extra room!
Sudocrem!
Been using it since baby was a newborn and it's been so good!
Vaseline as a preventative, zinc based cream as a treatment. A wet and dry cloth instead of baby wipes really helps too. Skin should be bone dry before cream is applied.
We use Aquaphor, which I see you mentioned. Are you making sure whatever you're using is being applied to dry skin? We always use the clean diaper to fan dry everything prior to applying the Aquaphor. This helps so much.
boudreaux butt paste ... I swear by this stuff!
First time mom and first time dealing with a rash. My little man is five months old and we just got his first diaper rash and I don’t know what to do. I’ve been putting cream on it (boudauex? Butt paste and now A&D overnight ointment). Should I continue with the paste? Or should I just use baby powder? Or both? Help please. I don’t want my baby in pain because of a diaper rash.
Make sure skin is completely dry before applying any topicals. thickly layer the paste to create a barrier. pat dont rub to clean. size up on diaper if possible.
Stop using wipes and switch to cloth with water.
Zinc cream, naked baby time, and milk baths if you can
Any kind of zinc cream plus as much naked time as possible, if possible. During naked time I'd actually do less or no cream to let it dry out even better.
Yes this! Naked time for their booty to air out .
Struggled with rash for weeks! Turns out the wipes were causing it. We used pampers sensitive and switched to Huggies sensitive and rash is gone. Other things that helped were airing out after change and patting dry before putting on triple paste. Would also rinse bottom with warm water under faucet and air dry once per day. Good luck!
I tend to have heat rashes! I was wondering any suggestions for padded regressors?
I don't know of any power. Aside from do not use anything with talcum powder in it. I know of a cream though. Parent's Choice has a good diaper rash cream. I know you are asking for baby powder, but that's all I know. Hope this sort of helps.
Hey powder and creams both work for me. Just need recommendations:0
Cool! Ok! 😌
Bodreaux’s, triple paste, aquaphor?
Putting finishing touches on the nursery and can’t decide which to buy.
We use A&D.
It's best practice to dry baby's skin before putting ointment on. Be forewarned, if you use the Bourdeox (idr spelling) Butt Paste, if baby has a rash and you don't dry their skin before adding ointment the rash will get so much worse! We found out the hard way. Decided to discontinue using that brand. We have had really good experience with A&D. We use the preventative ointment if baby looks a little pink. The treatment ointment if it's an actual rash. It works within a day usually.
Which A&D do you use? There are so many! We use bourdeuxs right now and it's so hit or miss if it'll help even if his skin is totally dried first
I've only seen two, one for preventative and one for treatment. We use both as needed.
Every boomer told me to use A+D Ointment. When my baby got diaper rash it was the only one that truly helped.
Yup, A&D and Destin were truly the only ones that quickly and effectively did anything for diaper rash.
Earth mama and weleda, aquaphor during the meconium stage in the very beginning.
Calmoseptine
We just had a nightmare rash when my baby was sick, and nothing helped until we got calmoseptine. I was so grateful. It worked miracles.
Triple paste!
Hello all! I have a now 6 month old baby girl and she just gets the worst diaper rashes. Me and my husband change her religiously, but that doesn't seem to help much. We changed diaper brands thinking maybe that was why, but she still has them. We have been using Destin cream and Johnson's baby powder (we alternate the two). What creams do yall use? Or powders? We are just at a loss and baby is just so uncomfortable 🥺
Dr. Bordeaux's butt paste at every diaper change. Worked like a charm!
I just wanted to let you know I did get this butt paste and with just one day her diaper rash is almost completely gone!!! Thank you so much! I appreciate it and I know my daughter does too!! 😊
Yay!! I'm so glad it's better!! 🎉
I have seen this advertised I will have to give it a try. Thank you!!
Make sure it is completely aerated before placing on a new diaper. Use a blow dryer on cool air if need be. Vaseline works better than any powder cream!! There's a reason they put it on circumcision and skin conditions.
Never rub just pat and always use A&D preventive before rash and A&D treatment for rashes.
Mom of a two year old and the only tiny rash he had was from Covid Poops.
Only thing that helped my baby was switching to dairy free milk it was like an almost overnight improvement. Expensive formula!! But ended up being the only thing that helped
Try anti fungal topical cream like clotrimazole. You can get it over the counter in pharmacies. In my experience if the rash is persistent, keep spreading and gets worst it may be a sign of yeast infection.
I would also do a wash over the sink with a gentle non-soap base cleanser instead of wiping during nappy change. As it keeps the diaper area cleaner and gentler on the skin. And gently pat with a soft towel to dry
I agree with the other comment try sudocream. It works wonders. My Dr reccomended to only use a pea size amount for a palm size area.
Also in my experience the baby powder make the rash worst. Maybe give it a break for few days and see if its improved.
Hello! My son is 9 months old and we just found out he has a double ear infection. Ever since starting antibiotics he’s been having a ton of diarrhea and it’s led to a very painful diaper rash for him. He screams so bad every time I wipe him I hate it. :( we are currently trying Boudreaux’s Butt Paste because I’ve heard good things but it’s not making any difference. Is there any other good creams for this situation? I’ve heard different creams work for different causes of diaper rash (like yeast rash) so I’m curious. Thanks for any help!
Calsomeptine + aquaphor (to make it spread 😅). I swear this worked the best and still does for my very rashy 2 year old niece!
Also hosing them off > wiping during the sensitive times
Second calmoseptine!
Triple paste! LOAD it up. Also take a break from wipes and use diapering cream (Mustela Liniment is great) with cotton pads. You can clean the load of it off with toilet paper and finish the clean up with the liniment.
Yes, +1 to all of this. Put it on real thick like you’re icing a cake.
Once the skin barrier is broken, A&D ointment is really the best. Then use any 40% zinc oxide to maintain!
I’d make sure it isn’t yeast infection. It’s really common for them to get yeast infections in antibiotics
Yes to this. When my kid had a really bad rash, the nurse recommended Lotramin AF with a layer of butt paste on top. It cleared in two days.
Desitin extra strength 40% zinc is magic!
Hello! My little one is 10 months old and gets diaper rash pretty frequently like once every 2ish weeks I wanna say. We have a routine from our pediatrician that treats it really well when it does pop up but there HAS to be a better way to prevent it.
We currently use just regular pampers and desitin max strength and we gave up on using wipes because they all irritated her so we just rinse her bottom and let her air dry really good or use a soft cloth to get her completely dry before putting on a new diaper.
I can only assume that the pampers and desitin contribute to the issue constantly coming back so I want to switch those products but oh my goodness there are so many different options and decision fatigue is real.
For diapers we are thinking: Pampers pure, healthy baby, or Millie moon (I wanted to love coterie but that price point made me want to barf)
For butt paste we are thinking: triple paste, aquaphor baby with zinc, or a&d (we’ve already used boudreax’s and it didn’t work as good as desitin)
Let me know what worked best for y’all, TYIA!
We use aquaphor with zinc. They have a regular version and one specifically for when baby has a bad rash, both have worked well for us. In healthcare we use zinc when people start to get skin breakdown from excess moisture and it works really well!
My baby’s pediatrician recommended getting a small container with warm water and adding a little bit of cetaphil for sensitive skin into the water and use that to clean babies butt everytime they poop. I guess it really helps get every poop particle and it was the only thing that helped my daughter’s diaper rashes on top of the usual ointment. I also let air dry and add a little bit of baby powder (contains zinc) just to absorb any extra moisture. Hope your LO rash gets better soon!!! I know how stressful it can be
I will have to try that out because even with rinsing her sometimes I see a couple little poop particles left behind
we use sudocrem for our LO's rashes.. definitely better than mustela based on our experience.. as for diapers, we use ultrathin ones during daytime and thicker ones for bedtime..
As someone who used to deal with diaper rash constantly with her newborn. 1. I’m so sorry you’re going through this it’s so frustrating and 2. I’ve tried just about everything.
The top 3 things that consistently work:
We used aquaphor max strength (only during rash flare ups), water wipes, dry wipes, and Huggies little movers diapers. No more butt rashes since using dry wipes. That's literally the only difference in our diaper change routine. They work so much better than a little fan or cotton cloth.
Hi! I am on the search for an awesome baby wash and baby lotion to use for when baby comes. What lotion has the “classic” baby smell? I really don’t want one that smells like baby powder. Thanks!!

I absolutely recommend noodle and boo , you can find it on Amazon. And it smells AMAZING . I've used it with my last two babies and plan on using it again. While it is pricier than Johnson and Johnson and, I'd say similar proves to honest brand. But I promise it smells so Amazing you will want to smell your baby all day long . My babies also have sensitive skin and had absolutely no issues, so that's always a plus.
Also, I haven't used the lavender scent only the original. So can't speak for the lavender.
Good luck 😊

best baby powder
Key Considerations for Choosing Baby Powder:
Ingredients: Look for powders made from natural ingredients. Talc-free options are preferred due to concerns about talc potentially containing asbestos. Cornstarch-based powders are a popular alternative.
Skin Sensitivity: Choose hypoallergenic formulas to minimize the risk of irritation or allergic reactions, especially for babies with sensitive skin.
Moisture Absorption: The primary purpose of baby powder is to absorb moisture and reduce friction. Cornstarch is effective for this, while some powders also include additional ingredients for soothing properties.
Fragrance: Consider whether you want a scented or unscented powder. Unscented options are often better for sensitive skin and reduce the risk of irritation.
Packaging: Look for easy-to-use packaging that allows for controlled application to avoid mess and waste.
Recommendations:
Burt's Bees Baby Dusting Powder: Made with cornstarch and talc-free, this powder is gentle on the skin and has a light, natural scent.
Johnson's Baby Powder (Talc-Free): This is a well-known brand that offers a talc-free formula, providing moisture absorption without the risks associated with talc.
Earth Mama Organic Baby Powder: A natural, organic option that is free from synthetic fragrances and made with safe ingredients, ideal for sensitive skin.
Choosing a baby powder that aligns with these considerations will help ensure your baby's comfort and safety.
