What Redditors are Saying

Best Lotion for Babies

TL;DR

  • Aquaphor and Cetaphil are popular unscented options.
  • Aveeno and Tubby Todd are recommended for sensitive skin.
  • Coconut oil and breast milk can be natural alternatives.

Unscented and Sensitive Skin Options

Many parents opt for unscented lotions to avoid irritation on sensitive baby skin. Cetaphil lotion is frequently recommended by pediatricians for its gentle formula [1:3][1:6]. Aquaphor is another popular choice, particularly for babies with eczema or dry skin [1:1][2:4]. These products are praised for their effectiveness without added fragrances that might irritate a newborn's delicate skin.

Popular Baby Lotions

Aveeno Daily Moisture Healthy Start Newborn Balm is favored for its moisturizing capabilities and suitability for sensitive skin [3:2][3:3]. Tubby Todd All Over Ointment is also well-regarded for its ability to soothe and moisturize without causing irritation [3:2][3:4]. Both brands offer products specifically designed for babies, making them reliable choices for parents seeking specialized baby skincare.

Natural Alternatives

Some parents prefer using natural alternatives like coconut oil or breast milk for moisturizing their baby's skin. Coconut oil is often recommended for its natural properties and effectiveness in treating dry skin and eczema [5:1][5:7]. Breast milk is also suggested as a natural remedy for dry skin due to its soothing and healing properties [5:6].

Considerations for Using Lotion

When deciding whether to use lotion on a newborn, it's important to consider the baby's environment and skin condition. In dry climates, daily moisturizing may be necessary [4:5][4:6]. However, some pediatricians advise waiting until the baby is older before introducing lotions, suggesting that the skin naturally adjusts post-birth [5:2]. Testing any new product on a small area first is recommended to ensure there are no adverse reactions [2:2].

Our LO is due next week and I am still on the search for a good baby lotion. I obviously love the smell of the Johnson and Johnson one but I don’t feel comfortable using that brand. Does anyone know a reliable / safe brand that smells like the Johnson & Johnson? Or just any baby lotion in general that you’ve used that you love?

My pediatrician says no scented anything. When I asked about my baby's dry skin she recommended Cetaphil lotion, not baby anything, their boring, unscented normal lotion.

We haven't used any soap or lotion on our 5.5month old baby and his skin is perfect. Never had nappy rash either because we use facewashers with water instead of babywipes.

My understanding is it’s not recommended to use lotion for a little while. My ped isn’t a fan, saying they too easily absorb everything so young. I was advised to use aquaphor on dry skin for a while. She’s 3 months right now and it did help a lot, especially since my LO has eczema

Nurses told me he doesn’t need lotion until his older. But his skin is so dry, should I go ahead and put baby lotion on him? He is 9 days old. Thanks

Our girl peeled for 2 weeks, I was leaving it or putting breastmilk on occasionally but at the end it was her forehead and scalp and I got fed up and ended up slathering her in Cetaphil/Aquaphor non scented lotion and it cleared up really quickly.

We have always bathed and moisturized our babies daily, from day one. Different folks have different ideas about this stuff, so I think it is exactly like everything else: subject to parental preference.

Our pediatrician at our first appointment recommended that we lotion our baby up but Colorado has dry winters. He was concerned about her skin getting too dry and cracking and bleeding.

What are you using for lotion?

Posted by 404HecksNotFound · in r/newborns · 6 months ago

I have an 11 week old, and I'm seeing that a lot of folks are lotioning up their little bubs every night. I didn't know we were supposed to be doing that. That being said, he doesn't get a bath every day (more like once or twice a week, tops). Is this a thing you do if you are bathing them daily to prevent skin drying out? Or is it an "all babies should have lotion" thing? I'm finding myself trying to put minimal things on his skin, and I don't really have a reason for that lol.

Bonus: What brand of lotion are you using?

We have been using Aveeno Daily Moisture Healthy Start Newborn Balm because of samples we were given from the pediatrician and it’s worked well for my little one! That being said, I have also heard Tubby Todd is great.

Yes, I have! No issues. It doesn’t have any specific warnings that suggest otherwise, just says to apply twice daily and that it’s made to mimic the vernix from the womb.

Also an 11 weeker here and only bathing twice a week. I don’t lotion daily, only after baths. Using Tubby Todd all over ointment. I want her to be able to build her own oils naturally

You don’t need to lotion your kid. If you want to ok. They dont need lotion, unless you live in the desert. I’ve done it a few times when it’s hot and dry out but usually leave his skin as free as I can.

hopehehehe · 6 months ago

My letdown when he unexpectedly unlatches.

Jk in all seriousness, I don’t have time to do a lotion massage or apply lotion all over. We bathe once a week and have no real need for lotion imo

Aquaphor - not the baby one, just the regular one. A bit on the face and shoulders each day. We were told not to start actual lotions till 4-5 months and my guy is 3 months. Though he does get a little OTC eczema cream, too, as needed on the chest. He doesn’t need much of anything to stay okay!

I started lotion as soon as I started bathing my baby, about 2 weeks in. It's extremely dry and cold here in NE-OH, and seemed helpful to my baby. I use the California Baby Lavender & Calendula line, which I used for my oldest who had horrific baby acne (so bad it looked like measles) - cleared it up in about 2-3 days max and smells amazing.

Since I've been using it for baths with our newest daughter, she hasn't had a bit of baby acne. Maybe she won't get it or maybe the lotion is keeping it at bay. Either way, I'm happy! They're pricey but I def recommend them.

ArcherShark · 7 months ago

The nurses at the hospital advised us to wait at least a month before any sort of lotion.

From what I've read, baby acne has to do with hormones baby may have passed on from mom, especially if breastfeeding. We bought tubby Todd exclusively for our baby's face because even the unscented, fragrance free lotions we had seemed to exacerbate her acne but we started using tubby Todd and it's helped a ton. That said, baby acne isn't anything to worry about and it will go away on its own eventually.

Mine had terrible baby acne/excema on her cheeks. I started using the Mustela cleansing water followed by their unscented baby lotion and it legit cleared it up within two days. Nothing else helped--I tried everything from Tubby Todd to coconut oil. I only use sparingly now but we live in MN so the cold weather is brutal.

At that age, my baby was dry in places (including face) and also had some tiny zits… my pediatrician told me to just wait it out and see because their skin is adjusting to the world outside the womb.

Pediatrician added that it’s not harmful for the baby, we’re just uncomfortable because it looks a bit unsightly.

Fast forward, baby is 6 months. Perfect skin. I bathe with only water and some breastmilk (shampoo because she has lots of hair). Occasional coconut oil for massages and such. Never any lotion. But each baby is unique :)

This advice doesn’t apply to cases like eczema or if the baby feels irritated, of course.

Yes Aveeno baby is good. They have human skin like adults do. If they’re skin is dry you can use lotion

5 upvotes on reddit
bloomed1234 · 3 years ago

I think 4 weeks is the usual recommendation to wait till. I only do water on baby's face still (7 months). I used soap on the rest of him from birth (hospital told us to) and my doctor recommended against putting any type of lotion product on my baby at first. I started using an oil around 10 weeks I think for baby massage before bed.

These can be a little pricey but I’m absolutely obsessed with Kate McLeod lotion bars!! The product doesn’t contain any water - just cocoa butter and oil - and the packaging doesn’t contain any plastic. I sometimes buy scented bars for me but use the Unscented Stone for my daughter. I find it lasts a pretty good amount of time (though I go through mine much quicker) and the solid bar makes for a nice little bedtime massage routine.

ETA this would probably be fine for her face but since it’s not specifically formulated as a face moisturizer I use Earth Mama Baby Face and really like it

We buy big bottles of organic jojoba oil with a pump, and the whole family uses it after showers/baths! Our ped was ok with it and we started using it when our baby was very little. For her, once that soaked in I’d layer it with Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby Fragrance Free Lotion… we still use this one now that she’s a toddler. And for extra dry spots, I’ll add Earth Mama Nose & Cheek balm or Pipette Balm on top.

enyalavender · 1 year ago

Just fyi, in general oil is an occlusive and lotion is an emollient so you would want to layer oil over the lotion to optimize the effectiveness of each product.

5 upvotes on reddit
T
thefinalprose · 1 year ago

Oh, thanks! I was under the impression that jojoba oil is more of a wax, which is why it’s so similar to human sebum and has more emollient properties.

There’s a Korean one called Atopalm and it is incredible. My mom is super sensitive and this was recommended to me as a dupe for skinceuticals triple lipid. But it is the biggest baby excema lotion in Korea and I’m on my 4th bottle of it. Highly recommend for kids and for adults. Use on your face for two days and just feel the way your skin changes. I use it on my three year old because we are in Chicago so this saved our lives in the winter. Make sure to get the Korean version of it. https://a.co/d/hZ7YyFB

best lotion for babies

Key Considerations for Choosing Baby Lotion:

  1. Ingredients: Look for lotions with natural, hypoallergenic ingredients. Avoid products with fragrances, parabens, and sulfates, as these can irritate sensitive baby skin.

  2. Moisturizing Properties: Choose lotions that contain ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, or glycerin, which are effective at locking in moisture.

  3. Skin Type: Consider your baby's skin type. If they have dry or sensitive skin, opt for thicker creams or ointments. For normal skin, a lighter lotion may suffice.

  4. Dermatologist-Tested: Look for lotions that are dermatologist-tested and specifically formulated for babies to ensure safety and efficacy.

  5. Packaging: Choose products with easy-to-use packaging, like pump bottles, to minimize mess and ensure you can apply the lotion easily.

Recommendations:

  • Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion: This lotion is formulated with natural colloidal oatmeal and is known for its moisturizing properties. It's fragrance-free and suitable for sensitive skin.

  • Cetaphil Baby Daily Lotion: This lotion contains organic calendula and is designed to hydrate and soothe dry skin. It's also free from parabens and mineral oil.

  • Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment: While not a lotion, this ointment is excellent for protecting and healing dry or irritated skin. It's great for areas prone to diaper rash or chafing.

Choosing a lotion that meets these criteria will help keep your baby's skin soft, hydrated, and healthy.
