TL;DR Salmon eggs, PowerBait, worms, and spinners are popular choices.
Live Bait
Live bait is a classic choice for trout fishing. Commonly used live baits include salmon eggs, worms, crickets, and wax worms [1:1]
[3:1]. Red worms, in particular, are recommended for their effectiveness when hooked through the middle without any weight
[2:2]. In some areas, like Vancouver Island, cured salmon roe is a local favorite, especially for large coastal cutthroat trout
[4:1].
Artificial Bait
Artificial baits such as PowerBait are highly favored among anglers targeting stocked trout. Variants like Gulp PowerBait or Berkley rainbow glitter have been reported to yield good results [1:2]. Some anglers prefer specific scents, such as corn-scented PowerBait, which have proven effective for them
[1:5].
Lures
Spinners and spoons are versatile lures that work well for various trout species, including cutthroat and rainbow trout. Popular options include Panther Martin spinners, Rooster Tails, Blue Fox Vibrax spinners, and Gibbs Croc spoons [4:3]
[5:1]. These lures are particularly effective when casting or trolling in lakes and rivers
[5:6].
Fishing Techniques
The method of fishing can also influence the choice of bait. For instance, float drift fishing with single eggs or wool has been successful for some anglers [4:2]. When fishing in streams, using a bobber setup with waxworms or a split shot with PowerBait can be effective
[3:2]. Additionally, soft beads or steelhead worms under a float are recommended for river fishing
[5:2].
Local Regulations
It's important to be aware of local regulations regarding bait use. In some regions, such as Vancouver Island, bait is banned in many rivers to promote catch and release practices [4:1]
[5:3]. Always ensure compliance with local rules and regulations to protect fish populations and habitats.
Fish stocked trout fairly often, I've actually found the gulp power bait or the berkly rainbow glitter have better luck for me than the garlic PB
Stocked trout maybe.
Powerbait yellow corn scent, roostertails, Pautzke salmon eggs
They make a corn scented powerbait. Works magic for me. However I’ve never gotten a bite on mice tails
Never hit the trout stream without a few jars of salmon eggs. Also I prefer crickets over worms but I like worms as a back up.
Red worms hooked once through the middle, no weight. Let them wriggle. You'll outfish everyone
DOA shrimp or Vudu shrimp.
But really live shrimp if you can get it
DOA with gold top/white belly and VUDU pink shrimp will catch anything in salt…..best shit ever.
I bet this is one of the oldest debates in human history
300 BC, Grunk’s wife scowls at him as he returns to the cave fishless
Grunk know best bait is blue beetle. Tronk say best bait is red beetle. Grunk say Tronk don’t know shit.
Lol! This will never be settled!
Same with catfish
Depends on the species, size, environment, what’s hatching, method of fishing, and more
Very cold river at height of around 13500 feet from sea level.
Worms
Can you list 5 please or more I know corn and power bait is good. Any others? Can you please provide links to stuff you use to catch trout.
Bobber, 2 1/2-3ft space, and a #10 hook with waxworm usually limit out with this setup.
I get a lot of trout to chase my rooster tail but never strike it. But i fish a small stocked stream
Live bait trumps all Eggs for lakes Waxworms on a bobber for streams or a split shot with some Berkeley powerbait
Butter Worms specifically the orange and yellow colored ones
Live bait: shrimp, worms, wax worms, or crickets (Depends on the area or lake v.s. Stream)
Artificial: powerbait worms Carolina rigged, hooked whacky style with a small treble hook or a 1/32 oz panther martin
Fresh oily guts work the best, but in most stocked trout places you can’t use chum as bait
I'm heading to Vancouver Island for a trip and plan to do some fishing with a spinning reel. I have experience catching brook trout back home, but I've never targeted cutthroat or rainbow trout. What lures would you recommend for these species?
I rarely use lures for trout fishing. Float drift fishing with single eggs and wool have always caught fish. If you're fishing the Quinsam you'll catch them with french fries. Lol
Here in the states, I always caught a lot of trout on the Panther Martin spinners. Especially the bumblebee one, the black and yellow one absolutely kills it for me. Silver KastMasters, rooster tails, those are all things I’ve caught a lot of fish on.
Alright, I'll make sure to buy a panther martin
Make sure to get a single barbless hooked one they rip up trouts mouths and honestly do way more harm than good.
Wish you the best of luck !!!
Fished the island my whole life, can’t go wrong with a steelhead worm or bead under a float especially now as the salmon are entering our waters, sea run cutties will be following them up to feed on the eggs. Blue fox spinners and Gibbs crocs spoons are hard to beat as well, just ensure you’re using a single barbless hook as per regulations in all our rivers.
Worms, roe, eggs for trout.
Bait is banned in all but 2 rivers on Vancouver island, where OP is requesting information about. It’s also not ideal for catch and release fishing, and banned in many areas because of that. In lakes, where by and large bait is legal, cured salmon roe is a local favourite especially for large costal cutthroat in some of our larger lakes.
Alright, I'll make sure to remember
Roostertails for me. 1/6th size
I'm heading to Vancouver Island for a trip and plan to do some fishing. I have experience catching brook trout back home, but I've never targeted cutthroat or rainbow trout. What lures would you recommend for these species?
For fishing rivers a soft bead or steelhead worm under a float is nearly impossible to beat, small spoons and spinners can work well too, though I prefer to fish those in lakes. Gibbs croc spoons and blue fox vibrax spinners are my go to for hardware.
Grab a couple spinners, a couple spoons, and whatever catches your eye. Buy some floats and some worms or powerbait.
Personally, I like the panther Martin spinners. Just have some variety. Cutthroat and rainbows aren’t really difficult. Just need to find them and have something they’re willing to take.
If fishing rivers please avoid using bait as it’s unlawful, single barbless in all our rivers as well as non retention of any non hatchery trout.
Any idea which stream or river might have hatchery trout? Last I checked, the closest trout hatchery I could find was in the Okanagan.
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind
Alright, I'll buy some spinners and spoons, thanks
Panther Marting, Mepps Black Fury, small spoon (Len Thompson, Kamlooper) for casting, Flatfish or spoon for trolling
Spoons, spinners and bubble float plus fly combo has worked for me spin casting.
Black and silver specked flatfish for trolling
Spoons or worms for casting, willow leaf for trolling are my favorites
Caught my two biggest trout yesterday using lemon lime power bait. The biggest one snapped my lead and got away. I’m using 10 pound line on reel and 8 pound lead. Any tips?
Congrats on those big trout but it should take a much bigger fish to snap 8lb, so maybe lowering drag or trying a Palomar knot would be smart.
Knot slippage is what I was thinking, you should be using 4# for these fish, they can see the line when it's 10# and up. Trout can be hard to catch as they're cautious.
Cast, reel, Repeat.
The trout will tell you when and how they want you to go from trout fishing to trout catching.
Bring tin foil salt and pepper to cook them in. Used to start a fire to get coals first when I’d fish high mountain lakes just to cook fresh caught trout
I want to live out the rest of my days as a hermit wherever you are.
How would you Reddit?
Fuck reddit I just wanna fish I'm just here when I can't fish
Probably the same way. Most Redditors barely touch grass as it is.
Note I said most. Not all.
Loosen your drag! Let them tire themselves out
Rapalas
CD1, CD3, and CD5 work the best for me by far. Even the smaller brookies will hammer a CD5.
I’ve caught thought all the way up to the 09 size. Craziness. The ones in the river near me love 07 rainbow trout ones.
I'm sure it's user error, but I've tried Rapalas a hundred times and have never had a single bite.
What colors and sizes are you using?
Could just be location too. Fish are weird
It's funny I usually use dough or crawlers... tossed everything and the kitchen sink at them last weekend and crankbaits on leadcore was the only thing they'd hit on...
All you need for trout is the 3 m's
Mepps Martins and magnets
Mepps #2, panther martin 1/32, and trout magnet jigs
Garlic flavored night crawlers! Absolutely tore em up with them
I prefer 1/32 to 1/16 Oz. tinsel or marabou jigs. If that doesn't work, roostertail or salmon eggs.
Do you also use it in rivers and streams. Please let me know where it works the best
Funny, I recently started using marabou jigs (mainly 1/8 oz) and have been crushing trout with them. Black/Red combo mainly.
Mainly using these: https://hawkenfishing.com/collections/sys-jigs/products/sys-jigs-flies-marabou-flash-jig-13
Night crawler with a cast a bubble is highly effective for lake fishing. Close to shore in the early (cold) season. Move out farther as it warms up. Berkeley stuff has no place in my kit. Fly lined night crawler in streams is a good bet. Stingers and traps are awesome in the stream. Cast masters with good hooks and spinners of just about any type are effective as well.
I’m fairly new to this. Going to Colorado with some friends to do some backpacking and fishing. Would appreciate some suggestions on the best bait/lures to use for catching trout at high elevations. I will be just using a basic spinning reel rod from Walmart for the trip. Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: Thanks for the advice everyone!
Rapala Countdown, rooster tails/mepps, spoons.
My best day ever on the river was with a Rapala countdown and strike King bitsy minnow.
I'm pretty sure at one point I caught 5 fish on 5 consecutive casts and lost count of fish by the end of the day
I live for days like that.
My PB brown and bow were both caught on a CD9 Brown trout pattern. They are killer when the conditions are right.
Joe’s flies. Consistently my best producers
Lil Jake's have hands down produced far better for me in lakes than any other lure. Silver or gold with red dots Thank me later....
Panther martin bee. Gold spinner, black body with three yellow spots. Works wonders.
Trout magnets (comes in an all-in-one case), Powerbait nuggets/eggs, some size 10-14 hooks, BB size splitshots, Thomas Buoyant spoons are my favorite. I’m sure I can name more things but probably best to keep it simple!
want some recommendations for trout lures
mainly fish small streams and creeks
just wanna try stuff different than spinners and worms
(fallfish pic for lack of trout pics 😭)
My uncle takes a worm hook and puts a live earthworm on it rigged Texas style with about a third to half the worm trailing off the back. He absolutely destroys trout on that rig.
If you catch a bunch of those river chubs, put them on hooks and go slam some smallmouth bass. Super effective bait.
I mainly fish small streams and creeks across Kentucky and my primary lures are either #0 or 1 Mepps inline spinners and Joe’s Flies. I’ve had god luck with both.
yeah I have a joes flie on in the pic
I thought so but wasn’t for sure. I’ve had really good luck with the #0 Mepps with stream trout and smallmouth. I like the Joe’s flies but have had hooks straighten out on bigger feisty fish.
rooster tails, spoons, and basic flies
what kind of flies can I throw on spinning rods
i already use roaster tails and spoons though
You can buy clear casting bubbles that give you weight to fish with flies on spinning gear. It’s actually very effective and has caught me lots of trout this year.
i have a bunch of flies I got from a yard sale. it's kind of tricky to get any distance with them but they work pretty good in small or fast moving water
Yes the brown glitter rooster tail seems to catch fish in any stream, lake, river or pond. Have fun!
Rapalas, but only when the water gets back below 70
Morone Swimbaits has some small jerk baits. Match that fish hanging off the hook. The bigger fish will eat fish the size on your hook. You can also cast fly fishing flies under a float on a spinning rod. Its also very effective and fun.
I don't catch that many trout in a day, I've tried tons of lure, and jigs end up being the best to catch them. But I've heard from alot of people that lures work better. So what lures do you use. Or if you do also use jigs what color are they usually
I'm just getting started with trout, but have had the best luck on a 1/32 oz Panther Martin classic. Regular style, yellow and silver.
S-shaped lures like ABU Toby, natural colours work best, big & small. For me spinners have been a hit and a miss, Mepps have caught the most.
Panther Martin size 6 rainbow trout dressed, or a size 6 bras body in silver dressed.
Rooster Tails
my friends who fish for trout have told me that marshmallows work well
best bait for trout fishing
Key Considerations for Choosing Bait for Trout Fishing:
Type of Trout: Different species (e.g., rainbow, brook, brown) may respond better to certain baits. Research the specific trout species in your area.
Season and Water Temperature: Trout are more active in cooler water. In spring and fall, they may prefer live bait, while in summer, artificial lures can be effective.
Natural Baits:
Artificial Lures:
Color and Size: Bright colors (like chartreuse or orange) can be effective in murky waters, while more natural colors (like brown or green) work well in clear waters. Size should match the local forage.
Recommendation: For beginners, starting with live bait like nightcrawlers or small minnows is often the most effective approach. If you prefer artificial lures, try a small spinner or a spoon in a bright color. Always check local regulations regarding bait use, as some areas have restrictions.
