What Redditors are Saying

Best Baldur's Gate 3 Bard Build

TL;DR

  • Lore Bard for spellcasting versatility and support.
  • Swords Bard for melee combat effectiveness.
  • Consider multiclassing with Warlock or Paladin for additional benefits.

Lore Bard: The Versatile Support

The Lore Bard is highly praised for its versatility and support capabilities. It excels in providing a wide range of skills and spells, making it ideal for players who enjoy controlling the battlefield and supporting their party [1:2]. With access to spells from any list through Magical Secrets at levels 6 and 10, the Lore Bard can adapt to various situations by choosing powerful spells like Counterspell and Eldritch Blast [1:5][2:2][3:10]. This subclass is perfect for those who enjoy a strategic playstyle and want to be the ultimate jack-of-all-trades.

Swords Bard: The Melee Powerhouse

For players who prefer a more combat-oriented approach, the Swords Bard offers a strong melee presence. This subclass allows bards to wield weapons effectively and perform impressive combat maneuvers. It's recommended to focus on Dexterity-based weapons such as knives, shortswords, and rapiers to maximize hit chances and damage output [5:1][5:3]. A popular build involves pairing the Swords Bard with a Paladin for divine smite capabilities, enhancing both damage and versatility [3:3].

Multiclassing Options

Multiclassing can further enhance a Bard's abilities. A common combination is Warlock 2/Lore Bard 10, which provides access to Eldritch Blast and other Warlock features while maintaining the Bard's core strengths [2:2]. Another option is a Sorcerer/Bard mix, offering additional spellcasting flexibility and elemental affinity from the Draconic Bloodline [3:1]. However, it's important to consider that multiclassing may delay some key Bard features, so plan your progression carefully.

Race and Background Considerations

Choosing the right race and background can complement your Bard build. For instance, a Zariel Tiefling offers free Thaumaturgy, which enhances intimidation and performance checks, aligning well with the Bard's role-playing aspects [4:1]. Additionally, focusing on Dexterity and Charisma will improve both combat effectiveness and social interactions, crucial for a Bard's success in Baldur's Gate 3.

i.e. role play, combat prowess and spell casting. Literally a real jack of all trades. Any rebuttal or round of applause is appreciated for this take.

Lore Bard is the best bard.

I would disagree and say sword bard, since it’s the best of both worlds buttt if you wanna tell me why I’m all ears, already played Valour and sword bard so that’s 120 hours down I’m ready for a 3rd play though.

Lore bard is outstanding support because of their access to spells from any list, plus Cutting Words. But it sounds like swords bard can be good as a gish/hybrid option. Different roles - which speak to the greatness of Bard!

Scout_Puppy · 1 year ago

Cutting Words to make enemies miss or your spells and debuffs hit.

You get the Magic Secrets at lvl 6, then you get another one at lvl 10. So, you can get Counterspell at lvl6. Lore Bard has a lot more tools to control the flow of battle.

I am in love with swords bard but if you’ve played both lmk the difference with a valor bard is - I just can’t imagine wanting a bard that can fight and also giving up flourishes.

"Best overall" is a tough one -- depends how highly you value being able to pass out-of-combat checks like the act 2 boss persuasion stuff. Bard is the best at that, no doubt.

But a bard ain't doing 350 single target damage in one turn like a monk, paladin, or fighter can, nor clearing a room like a sorc spamming Twinspelled/Quickspelled Chain Lightnings.

Of course there is a valid argument that the latter is overkill, which it is. Four bards can beat tactician easily. A solo bard can probably do it.

Just depends what you want out of the game.

You can get Eldritch Blast at lvl 6 as one of your Magic Secret spells as a Lore Bard.

For example, I've heard that Polearm Master still doesn't work as it should. I also recently found a bug where a control condition (such as Hypnotized) seems to get overridden by "Witness" (if you kill a neutral NPC in sight of another). Or I want to at least be aware of the combat bugs so I can plan for those in the harder fights.

I haven't done a full playthrough on Bard yet (it's my Tactician run, been waiting for some bugs to get cleared up before pursuing it seriously). But I mained Bard when I played 5e, so I'm 100% with you. Lore Bard ftw.

Depends what sort of Bard you want - do you want a Bard who's great at supporting the party and has a ton of skills (i.e. a Lore Bard) or a Bard who's more focused on dealing damage in melee and ranged (Swords Bard)? All Bards are actually pretty good without multiclassing and multiclassing can delay the good stuff you get from your Bard progression (e.g. Extra Attack, Magical Secrets, Font of Inspiration), but there are some builds with quite nice synergy e.g.

Warlock 2/Lore bard 10 (gives you the more powerful version of Eldritch Blast for consistent ranged damage)

Paladin 2/Swords Bard 10 (for lots of Smiting)

Paladin 6/Lore Bard 6 (lots of Smiting, Paladin Aura, still get level 6 Magical Secrets, eventually)

Draconic Sorcerer (White Dragon) 1/Swords Bard 11 - this is actually the build I'm currently running with, gives to access to the Shield spell, Armour of Agathys, and Magic Missile, as well as a bunch of Sorcerer offensive cantrips and +3 AC unarmoured. Still gives access to a 6th level Bard spell as a capstone. If taken at first level also replaces your Bard bonus to Dex saves with the Sorcerer bonus to Con saves, which is very handy to help maintain concentration on spells during combat - but you do need to pick a race that gives the weapon proficiencies you need (e.g. Drow or maybe Wood Elf), as otherwise you only get the very limited weapon proficiencies form Sorcerer - I went for Drow, which gives you proficiencies in Rapier, Short Sword and Hand Crossbow (Sorc gives you Dagger, Staff and Light Crossbow, Swords Bards gives you Scimitar proficiency).

Fighter 1 /Swords Bard 11

Cleric 1/Swords Bard 11 (pick a Cleric domain that gives you access to Martial Weapons and perhaps Heavy Armour)

For ability scores, for my Sorc 1/Swords Bard x I went for:

Str 8 Dex 16 Con 14 Int 8 Wis 12 Cha 16

For skills I have: Perception (from Drow), Performance and Acrobatics (from Entertainer background), Insight, Persuasion (picked at Sorc level 1) and Deception (picked at Bard level 1), with Expertise in Insight and Persuasion (for dialogues).

u/Metalogic_95 would you mind posting your build plan more in detail? I'm a DND noob and I love the sound of your build but overwhelemed with choices.

Like which cantrips to take in Sorc, what to use on level ups etc. But I like the idea of a draconic drow bard quite a lot.

1 upvotes on reddit
M
Metalogic_95 · 2 years ago

For Sorcerer cantrips I took Shocking Grasp (denies reactions and gives advantage if target is wearing metal armour), Bone Chill (good vs. undead and prevents HP gain), Ray of Frost (environmental effect on water, puts out fires and slows enemies), and Fire Bolt (good damage and environmental effect on grease/firewine etc.)

For Bard cantrips I took Vicious Mockery and Blade Ward

For Bard level 1 spells I took Healing Word, Bane, Dissonant Whispers and Sleep.

At level 2 Bard I took Speak with Animals (which is a Ritual spell, so doesn't use up a spell slot when cast)

At level 3 Bard I took Tasha's Hideous Laughter, Cloud of Daggers and Crown of Madness. I also got Faerie Fire at character level 3, because my character is a (Seldarine) Drow.

At level 3 Bard I put my Expertise into Insight and Persuasion, to improve my "face" skills (another party member is my thief).

At Sorc 1/Bard 3 I'm not wearing any armour, but due to +3 AC unarmoured from Draconic and +2 AC unarmoured from an item I found quite early on I have 18 AC (with Dex 16), backed up by +5 AC from Shield spell as a reaction and/or +4 AC from a Defensive Flourish).

I went for the Two Weapon Fighting style at level 3 Bard and am currently dual-wielding +1 Short Swords and +1 Hand Crossbows.

Is there a good way to shoehorn a dwarf into these? I desire the dex/cha for dialog and rogue reasons, but having a shield seems fairly important. I should probably just go paladin and forget the thief stuff, but maybe someone knows a smart way to handle it.

Edit: cripes.. is taking just one level of cleric the answer here? I hadn't ever looked at this before, but they provide the missing shield prof. Do you start as cleric, or can you do this after 1 of bard?

I finally stared as a bard and am looking for the best build that is a nice balance with melee. I keep Astarion in party as a 4/7 Rouge/Gloomstalker and love that. I’d like to go for similar vibes with my bard and would prefer swords to double crossbows. Unless you’ve got other ideas? TIA!

I tend to like just straight 12 Lore Bard.

Mostly because I'm not a huge fan of playing super overpowered builds. They tend to make the game very stale for me very quick. But Lore Bard is a controller type character who can do some big AoE damage at times that feels like it is powered about how it should be.

Swords Bard is obviously busted and is involved in just about all of the best builds in the game. But I just don't find that entertaining.

imo, i think 10 lore/1 cleric or warlock/1 wizard is the most fun lore bard setup and its not very broken either, it just really expands your spell list to include pretty much every spell in the game and if you go cleric you can also get armor proficiency on top

its feels just like pure lore bard but with twice as many spells

I’m partial to swordsbard10 paladin2: divine smite upcast for big hits, melee flourish for multi-attack, and magical secrets from bard10 is such a killer combo. It’s gotten to the point where I struggle to build bard or paladin any other way.

Depends on your play style. But between bardic inspiration double attacks and super upcast divine smites, you’re going to end up doing a ton of damage either way.

It’s also really nice to have bard support spells like silence and plant growth. Great for engagements where “it’s not me trapped in here with you, it’s you trapped in here with me”

As a great fan of sorcerers, a 6/6 lore bard split is great, since you get magical secrets and elemental affinity from draconic bloodline, but I feel it isn't what you are looking for.

This build is probably what you want.

If you are not in honor mode, 7/5 bard/warlock will give you a third attack and will enable you to use any weapon doing damage based on your charisma (so don't need to use the dex gloves and can dump strengh)

Not having Hold Monster or any of the level 7+ spells like Globe of Invuln hurts a lot though. I feel like 6 Sorc 6 Divination Wizard, INT based, should feel better. Cutting words and Song of Rest are cool, but losing so many good high level spells just doesn't sit right with me.

I thought this would be a more popular option but seems you're the only one so far among melee and full caster bards. I like my skillmonkey oriented variant with 6 swords bard / 3 thief / 3 ranger, a bit less combat burst but 3 more skillpoints than the fighter dip (covers sleight of hand, arcana / history and one more random pick) and provides some small amount of extra spell slots and utility spells.

Zariel Tiefling- the free Thaumaturgy is awesome for passing intimidation/performance checks, you can’t go wrong.

As for subclass, Lore Bard is great if you don’t mind taking more of a support role to your allies in combat - the free three skills synergies nicely on a brainy bard (just make sure not to pick any of those skills in character creation, or you’ll double up and the game doesn’t let you re-pick).

The combat Bards look fun, seems like Valor is the easier to play of the two but I haven’t created a character from either of those subclasses yet.

Best bard build?

So I'm planning on being a melee bard in my party. I'm doing school of swords though I've heard valor is also really good. I'm on my 3rd playthrough but last time I played bard I wasn't too effective in combat so I was wondering which school I should take and what weapons are good for bard. I remember last time my chance to hit my enemy's was rarely above 50% with melee so I was wondering how I could avoid that so I can actually hit the enemies and do decent damage as well

Depends on your weapon and stats. Generally, melee weapons use STR while ranged weapons use DEX. Finesse weapons use DEX if it's higher than STR. The corresponding ability modifier is added to your attack rolls, so the higher they are, the more likely they'll hit.

So best to use knives, shortswords and rapiers then? My dex is definitely my second highest star. In actual dnd I play bard but it's a lot easier with homebrew and the fact I can avoid combat easier. But in bg3 combat is a major element and last playthrough I was dead for over half my fights so I wanna try do it right this time. Thanks for the help!

How do you make the best Bard?

I would appreciate any tips on my new playthrough! I am making a Drow College of Lore Bard, not the most proficient subclass but it fits the "scholarly poet" vibe I'm going for. If you have any good suggestions regarding good Bard armor, dope Bard clothes, effective cantrips, and badass spells, please put them below.

Also, is there any sarcastic or hilarious dialogue options in this game? Either this game is hiding most of the funny dialogue options for me or there isn't any. The only funny dialogue option I have found was when you encounter the female ogre and bugbear going at it. If so, what is the funniest dialogue option you've encountered?

Probably not the best, but 10 bard/2 paladin is a huge amount of fun. Smites are just crazy good damage, and College of swords gives good damage output with flourishes (and increased chance for opportunity smites), while also allowing you to operate as an effective caster too. But as a part time paladin, you have to remember, ABS. Always. Be. Smitin’.

I’ve leant into dex focused armor (Yuan Ti) and dual wielding short swords, but can see myself picking up heavy armor and a polearm soon I think.

Lore bad is lots of fun! Look into Fear, Hypnotic Pattern, Plant Growth, and other control spells. You can do a bit of damage with cCloud if Daggers, Shatter, and Thunderwave but that will be your weak point. Consider a two level dip into Warlock for eldritch blast, or using a staff that comes with an attack cantrip like Firebolt or Ray of Frost. The Potent Robe is great if you go the warlock route.

Some good magical secrets options are Fireball, Hunger of Hadar, Haste, and Counterspell, but feel free to grab something else if it catches your interest.

Bard is for sure the character with the funniest/ sassiest dialogue options, but it isn’t gonna be constant. Most of the humor in the game is environmental or party banter.

In my opinion, the best lore bard takes one level in wizard. This allows you to learn spells from spell scrolls, significantly increasing the spells you can learn. One level of wizard is enough to learn any wizard spell for which you have a spell scroll. And there are a ton of wizard spells that don't care about your Int.

Endgame build is probably 1 fighter / 1 wizard / 10 lore bard. This is a support character who can fulfill all of your needs and is customizable to whatever you want it to do via magical secrets. You can even make a radorb lore bard and have it function like a cleric but with bard support.

This is better to do as a companion rather than as Tav. All of the companion voice actors have lines recorded for cutting words / vicious mockery. Turn the reaction on by default to have Shadowheart, for example, randomly call your enemy a cuck.

This isn't the best bard build. The generally agreed strongest options are 2/10 smite swords bard and 1/1/10 ranged swords bard. Those builds can be found with a simple search. Both of them are exceptionally good for your main character and are in the top five builds for any class in general in terms of their power and party contribution. The only downside is SSB requires some evil choices if you want to unlock its full power.

2 upvotes on reddit

a_toaster96 · 8 months ago

SSB with only good decisions is pretty viable too. Carry resonance stone to cause psychic vulnerability in a generous radius. Use shadow blade and ring of strange conduit (summon shadow blade takes concentration). And dual wield a stat stick or damage rider like dolor amarus or under mountain knife. AND you can you can do this with DEX as your main stat to get weapon dmg bonus, AC bonus, and initiative (dex builds rock).

Just be sure to tell your party you work alone when it comes to killing mind flayers.

Check if they make an attack roll or require a saving throw. Anything that doesn't is fair game. Counterspell, longstrider, etc.

You still probably want 16 Int or so to increase the number of spells you can prepare at once

Lots of good suggestions in here, and just want to share a piece of info you may not have learned.

Early in the game, you will gain access to unlimited respecs for 100 gold a piece (which is very little, gold is plentiful in this game). You can't change your race/background, but you can reallocate stat points and even change your class entirely if you wnat. So if you find your character isn't doing everything you want, it's easy to make totally new builds. You can respec your companions too :D

Let's Talk Bard Builds

Posted by PureBlue · in r/BaldursGate3 · 2 years ago

Bards of reddit, lend me your experience. I am torn between the following:

Full lore: Pick a shield and armor prof race = human or half elf. Cutting words seems great - I love being able to "put a thumb on the scale" for important rolls. For lvl 6 magical secrets, stuck between haste (op with Larian's changes), counterspell (great, but cutting words uses reaction and might want damage... would pick at lvl 10), fireball, or call lightning or lightning bolt (wet = double damage = more than fireball, because Larian).

Swords:
If melee, multiclass with two levels of paladin for shield + heavy armor + smite. If ranged, multiclass with two levels of fighter for archery weapon style + action surge. Melee slashing flourish is a cleave that can hit multiple enemies, which is good especially with smite, but ranged is a literal extra attack. Ranged flourish + action surge + extra attack = 6 attacks in one turn. More with hand crossbows, I assume.

Not sure why one would pick valor. Cutting words seems far better than combat inspiration.

Bardlock seems bugged at the moment, so not considering it.

Please share your bardly advice with me. What college did you go? Any multiclassing? What magical secrets have you chosen?

Swords bard 6, paladin 2 and the rest in bard again for a dps build (you can go 6 x 6 but i dont like personaly) Life cleric 1 or 2 and the rest in lore bard for a suport / healler type Swords bard 6 and warlock 6 for another mix of dps Valor bard 6 and battlemaster 6 for a tank/suport type (make sure to take some of the suporttive manouvers) Any bard to 12 its viable on themselves Bard bring a lot of utility and a rly strong capability to be the face of the party, just have in mind that they get some spells from other classes in some lvls, that being 6 and 10 for lore bards. And lvl 10 for swords and valor bards. To get the most of it just make sure you have the pros and cons of what you will be gainning or losing for each build, for exemple the swords 6 and paly 2 you will have full spell slots progression + the lvl 10 bonus spells + the paladin smites for some absurd burst dmg and so on...

Depends on how you're wanting to approach it. If you want close range combat, most take Swords for high damage. If you want more spellcasting/control, Lore Bards have great versatility. You can also dip into Sorcerer for Metamagic, allowing you to do great debuff/crowd control.

2 upvotes on reddit
SSJ4Vegeta1986 · OP · 1 year ago

Yeah , I definitely think close range. The main reason is the charisma stat and being able to talk my way out of certain situations.

moonwatcher99 · 1 year ago

I mean, you can definitely still do that as a Lore Bard. I was referring more to how you approach actual combat once it starts. But fair enough, everyone needs to play how they want.

Myself I went Lore because you get so many options, including Cutting Words and two instances of Magical Secrets. Also, a lot of the best Bard gear for skills don't give as much protection, so I wouldn't really want to be on the front lines. The big sacrifice is the extra attack, unfortunately.

The last two levels of bard aren't that great, spell-wise, etc. So, you could start with Warlock at level one to get wisdom saves which are handy, then lvl 2 bard/lvl 3 warlock/rest lvls bard. This gives you hex which is an awesome stat remover for enemies, and Eldritch blast. 2nd lvl of sorc gives Eldritch Invocations : Agonizing Blast, (Repelling Blast or Devil's Sight).

Your other option is to take two lvls of fighter to get that action surge. Both good options.

Just throwing out info here, but L6 spell Ottos Dance is busted as hell. 100% lockdown of a boss guaranteed. Gotta hit 11 bard for it. Seriously though, it takes guys like Cazador and Raphael completely out of fights. So I would counterpoint that full 12 Bard for this spell alone is amazing.

Yeah man. Multiclassers tend to discount the sweet stuff a full 12 will get you due to the natural bias that occurs because they’re insecure about their builds. I’m a 30 year DM and I’ve seen all manner of combinations. I would take a full 20 of nearly every class over some Frankenstein creation. I immediately wrote off the gentleman above who said the “last two levels of Bard spells aren’t that great.” As you said, Otiluke’s Irresistible Dance is the strongest spell in BG3. I’ve been taking videos of all the big bads I’ve hit with it dancing their little hearts out.

10Bard/2Paladin

Warlock is just a waste, you get better spellslots in this setup for the purpose of smiting, better damage on your flourishes and magical secrets which while I think people overrate it in a melee based build for this game, is still very good and better than anything you get from a dip into warlock.

Use mobile flourish to both enhance your mobility to always be able to get into melee range on an enemy and to get 2 enemies together to cleave.

Stack crit based items, crit fishing (especially with ability to cleave) is key for this build.

Take an ASI and then savage attacker as that will boost your damage a shit ton overall.

I find that there are other melee builds that on paper pump out more damage, but this is the one most reliably on target if you can use mobile flourish proactively, and it is close enough in overall damage that having a single turn more of doing full damage rather than being stuck doing ranged damage or expending a resource to get on target makes up for any difference and then some.

If you are using haste you may find that you have plenty mobility on your melee characters, but if you are using haste literally nothing is weak and everything in this game turns into absurd easy mode, so talking about optimal and haste sort of gets redundant as you are talking about does everything die in 1 turn or 2.

I used a similar build and had blast throughout the game. One shots any boss and still has amazing out of combat utility.

Bards are naturally pretty close to busted. A swords bard with 2x hand crossbows by itself is extremely potent. Full caster progression, Heroes Feast abuse, mixing two weapon fighting and casting for extra value, the ability to make 5 attacks in a turn with Ranged Slashing Flourish.

Pretty godly for a single class build. It can be even crazier if you use/abuse titanstring bow and special ammo (although I would say that is not a controller friendly build).

Edit: oh and magical secrets is really good too.

TLDR:

Sword bard 6 -> fighter 1 -> thief 3 -> sword bard 7 -> fighter 2 with archery style and sharpshooter.

Equip the band of the mystic scoundrel and helmet of arcane acuity. Those are essential items so if you didn't find the helmet or if you already dealt with Akinator and forgot the ring, you fucked up.

The basic strategy is to stack arcane acuity with arrows, then use your bonus action to cast spells. You deal high damage and control enemies at the same time. Highly effective.

This is the build I put on Jaheira. It’s absurd how good it is. Consistent damage and very strong control. Even just throwing out command with a BA is great when you’re at 95% success.

You can't cast command with those levels. If you take 10 Bard with magical secrets you can grab Banishing Smite and Command which adds some nice burst damage and a good use of level 1 slots.

i always found bard to be a little worse than other martials as far as "op builds" go due to low feats, but i didnt know about that ring, that is an absolute game changer, extremely strong.

btw i find 6 bard / 4 thief / 2 fighter much better than 7/3/2. Extra feat instead of bard 7 which honestly doesnt give much.

also, that helmet is great early on but once you have enough spell save dc, you can switch to diadem of arcane synergy. this automatically triggers with a bunch of effects, most easily, ability drain tadpole power (which is great on any shooter), and opens up your 2nd ring slot for whatever else.

I mean, Bard10/2Paladin is full caster spellslots for Smites that can use cleave for their top damage, has much improved mobility and you can dual wield shortswords/end game dagger to maximize your stats when crit fishing to smash out huge smites.

It is pretty top tier as far as melee goes, and honestly is the only dual wield melee build I think truly can sit somewhere near the other top melee builds that are almost always 2h.

You get 2 feats, so you can max out dex and grab savage attacker which is going to be a huge boost to damage for this build.

I guess you could say it is slightly worse than the top martial builds but it certainly never felt like it was, and I think it because having a good usage of mobile flourish lets you do top damage when you have a single enemy and move them in a direction you need to go, so you can have much less frequent moments of having to use ranged attacks or expended a resource to get into range, which I find is a problem with some of the melee builds that are producing optimal damage. Sure, warlock5/paladin7 is insane, but it can be much more limited in terms of getting to your targets in a fight that is more spread out.

Admittedly fights get more dense/in closer quarters as the game progresses, so this lack of mobility eventually doesn’t feel as bad, but until the very end of Act 2 I found plenty of fights where you needed to move between enemies so often and having that free teleport attached to your damage to preemptively move without spending movement speed was pretty huge for actually getting to do damage.

If you are looking for raw damage, you can just get 10 levels in Bard for Banishing Smite, use an auto-crit with it for 10d10 force damage. You also have your ranged flourishes + Sharpshooter for more damage. Band of the Mystic Scoundrel + Helmet of Arcane Acuity to bonus action cast invisibility or any enchantment/illusion spells (Banishing Smite also takes your bonus action, so not on the same turn). Just going 12 Bard allows you to get a feat like Alert so you are basically untouchable, or you can multiclass into Fighter for Archery Fighting Style + Action Surge.

6 Swords Bard w/ Sharpshooter + Literally anything is more than enough to beat the game with.

best bard setup

I'm thinking of being a human or gnome bard but there are so many guides saying be this be that quite overwhelming does it really matter what race i am? what would be the best option for a beginner bard player?

In the end it really doesn't matter but ideally you should be taking a race that gives you something you don't have.

EG if you play to be a valor bard human is worthless cause you get shield+martial anyway. Tiefling on other hand gives a elemental resistance and some free spells. Orc is basically useless cause you won't be critting that often and if relentless endurance is proccing you probably already lost the fight and should be reloading your save lmao. Dragonborn gives you resistance but also lacks darkvision.

Like i said in the end at like level 12 with cracked items it really doesn't matter but some races are better objectively simply because they provide useful stuff while others give nothing. Not bad but just give nothing

Half orc is decent for a Swords bard because you are going to be critting often and Swords bards get to add extra damage dice to their weapon attacks.

Livid_Language_5506 · 2 years ago

Its ok but i wouldnt call it good as extra spells/elemental resistance/shield prof cause sword bard doesn't get that etc.

I'm still of the opinion that sword bard is just a worse fight and bard combined, but if you had to choose there are worse options cough dragonborn

Everything is viable and you can just pick what you like based on lore / style.

All races offer some nice advantages:

  • Gnome has a nice saving throw bonus. I took the subrace with double proficiency in history myself.
  • Halflings are lucky which is always useful
  • Humans and Half-Elves gain shield proficiency which is huge for lore bards!
  • Githyanki and Shield Dwarves for medium armor proficiency if your lore bard does not plan to invest more than 14 in dex (which might allow you to get more constitution or int)
  • Tiefling for the cantrip that grants advantage to intimidation
  • Wood elf if you want extra movement, stealth, perception
  • Drow for perception and a free faerie fire and darkness spell each day
  • Dragonborn for an AoE attack and some resistances
  • Half ork to resist oneshots and for stronger crits (swords / valor bards)

Just take your time, I'd take a look at Lore Bard, it's the most "bardy" of the options gets extra skills and spells, just make sure at the startyou don't have the skills you gain from taking lore bard and read spells before picking them up and you can do amazing monoclass and maxing CHA, then having 16dex/14 con or the like.

Expertise in Performance+ preferred CHA skill and talk your way out of the shit you get into.

If you take the actor feat and chose Intimidation+Persuasion as your Bard Expertise, you can have Expertise in all CHA skills as soon as level 4 (plus a +4 modifier). Makes convincing people to do stuff reeeeeaaaaaally easy.

Race matters the most for roleplaying. There are optimal choices, like picking human for shield proficiency, githyanki for medium armor prof and jumping powers, halflings for Lucky etc. None of these bonus are going to make or break your build, but they can be nice to consider if you have a particular build archetype in mind

best baldurs gate 3 bard build

Key Considerations for a Bard Build in Baldur's Gate 3:

  1. Subclass Choice:

    • College of Lore: Focuses on spellcasting and versatility, allowing you to learn spells from other classes and enhancing your support capabilities.
    • College of Valor: Offers better combat abilities, making you more effective in melee and providing buffs to allies.
  2. Ability Scores:

    • Charisma (Primary): As a bard, Charisma is your most important stat for spellcasting and social interactions. Aim for a score of at least 16-18.
    • Dexterity (Secondary): Improves your armor class (AC) and ranged attack rolls. A score of 14-16 is ideal.
    • Constitution: Important for hit points; aim for a score of 12-14.
  3. Skills:

    • Focus on skills that leverage your Charisma, such as Persuasion, Deception, and Performance. Consider adding some utility skills like Stealth or Acrobatics.
  4. Spells:

    • Support Spells: Choose spells like Healing Word, Bardic Inspiration, and Heroism to assist your party.
    • Control Spells: Consider spells like Hold Person and Dissonant Whispers to control the battlefield.
    • Damage Spells: Include spells like Vicious Mockery and Shatter for offensive capabilities.
  5. Equipment:

    • Weapons: A rapier or a hand crossbow for melee and ranged options.
    • Armor: Light armor for mobility; consider upgrading to medium armor as you progress.

Recommendation: For a balanced bard build, consider starting with the College of Lore subclass. Focus on maximizing your Charisma and Dexterity, and select spells that enhance your party's effectiveness while allowing you to control the battlefield. This build will make you a versatile support character capable of handling various situations, both in and out of combat.
