What Redditors are Saying

Best Baldur's Gate 3 Fighter Build

TL;DR

  • Battlemaster with Great Weapon Master and high Strength is a solid choice.
  • Consider gear and elixirs to boost stats and damage output.

Battlemaster Build

The Battlemaster subclass is highly recommended for its versatility and effectiveness. Key maneuvers like Riposte, Feint, and Trip Attack provide crowd control and additional damage opportunities [1:2][1:5]. Combining this with the Great Weapon Master feat allows for powerful attacks with two-handed weapons, especially those with 2d6 damage like greatswords [1:2].

Strength and Equipment

Boosting your character's Strength is crucial for maximizing damage output. In Act 3, you can acquire gloves that raise your Strength to 23, allowing you to redistribute points into other stats [1:3]. Additionally, using elixirs of strength throughout the game can temporarily enhance your abilities, making encounters easier [1:6].

Alternative Builds and Multiclassing

For those interested in dual-wielding or ranged options, consider multiclassing with Rogue or Ranger for additional benefits like Sneak Attack damage [5:5]. Sharpshooter and dual hand crossbows offer a strong ranged alternative to melee builds [1:7]. Eldritch Knight combined with Ruby of the War Mage can provide magical versatility while maintaining martial prowess [5:6].

Gear Optimization

Selecting the right gear can significantly impact your build's effectiveness. Items that lower critical hit thresholds, such as helmets and daggers, are particularly useful for Champion Fighters aiming to maximize crits [3:9]. For dual-wielding fighters, consider feats like Dual Wielder for extra AC and bonus action attacks [5:4].

Party Composition and Strategy

When building your fighter, consider how they fit into your party composition. A balanced team might include characters like a thief for stealth and burst damage, a berserker for raw power, and a cleric or sorcerer for support and utility [3:5]. Adjust your strategy based on the strengths and weaknesses of your party members to optimize combat effectiveness.

ORIGINAL POST

I'm struggling with making my character useful. Every build video I watch has like dozens of people in the comments saying the build is actually crap or would be better if it was doing something different. Does anyone have recommendations for good builds or a guide that they trust to be useful? I'm terrible at building my character.

Got you fam, go battlemaster, for your maneuvers get riposte, and then whicever of the frighten/disarm/push ones that do extra dmg push is really good since it gives you an extra shove if you're in a situtation to get an enemy into a pit. At level 4 take Great Weapon Master and use weapons that have 2d6 so greatswords are gonna be the most common ones of those, 2 feats go to making your STR 20 and then you can pick athlete or more constitution or savage attacker for the last one. And das it you just go in and smack shit, use your maneuvers when you can and with your mages put haste on your fighter and hold person/monster on enemies (it guarantees crits) and you can be making 9 crits in a turn later on that all get +10 damage added on them from great weapon master. Oh and for maneuvers trip attack is also good to get you advantage.

You can also start 17 str, do the thing in act 1, then just use one asi and use your other for whatever

Just to add on if you're not sure if this is good or not, I was killing some bosses in one turn later on with Laezel on tactician using this setup, the last feat I took on her was athlete to get closer to enemies faster but taking savage attacker or extra stats is fine too.

Get the gloves that automatically raise your strength to 23 in act three. Then you can re roll your stats to put str at 8 and redistribute in other stats. Plus 2 more feats to use!

gavlor · 2 years ago

Is it ur main character? I would just get your AC as high as possible or your damage as high as possible. Champion is good if you have a ton of gear backing you up or are attacking to get critical hits, BM is cool if you want to back up your team more.

Get a shield, the biggest, highest dmg 2-handed you can get your hands on, or fight with offhand

Dex or Str; usually both are redundant. if you go dex, you can get medium armor mastery which gives you armor edge over Heavy @>16 dex But it’ll take more work to find strong weapons.

With dex for feats I’d get med. armor mastery+, attribute bonus (maybe resilient dex)++, maybe dual-wielder+++(but you might also prefer 2x light weapons since attribute bonus could be more reliable) Fighting style; two-weapon or defense

With str for feats I’d get attribute bonus (maybe athlete or Heavy Armor Mastery)+, Great Weapon Mastery++, Attribute bonus+++(savage attacker?) Fighting style; Great Weapon fighting

Cross-classing works well with fighter, especially in the grey area between levels 5-11. If you want to use two weapons, get 3 levels in rogue for the ‘thief’ and likely one more to get the feat. You also get fighting styles for cross-classing into ranger or Paladin. A level 6fighter/2 paladin would have two fighting styles and two feats, attack 2x and divine smite. A level 1fighter/3rogue would have sneak attack and 2x attack with offhand. A level 5fighter/3 rogue; A level 4rogue/6fighter; a level 6fighter/4 paladin.

Or you could be a psycho like me and just make a paladin with str and dex as dump stats, relying on magic gloves and elixirs of giant strength the whole game hoping you don’t run out

1 upvotes on reddit
accidentalawesome1 · 1 year ago

I do this with elixirs. There's almost an infinite supply of elixirs of hill giant strength in act 1 and 2, and cloud giant in act 3. I Dumped strength and increased dex for initiative, pop an elixir and have 27 strength, 23 Con from the amulet 17 dex and 16 wisdom. First round use your bonus action to pop potion of speed. Enemies are deleted before most can get a turn. It's hilarious

Whats the option if some one wants a dual wield fighter and doesnt want to pick gwm?

Sharpshooter which is the ranged version of GWM with dual hand crossbows.

If you want melee I'm not sure yet sharpshooter/GWM make the builds using them so good so not getting anything like it is a hit to dps.

Possibly with some multiclassing and experimentation you could make something really good but it's gonna be more complicated and it's gonna be more dependant on weapons that you get, it feels like your offhand is gonna have to be more of a stat stick with some good effect like >!Knife of the undermountain king which lets you crit on a 19, but even that works better as a stat stick for a sharpshooter build since you're never using it it's just constantly giving you that effect. !<

Best strength weapon for fighter build?

Posted by SlitThaClit69 · in r/BaldursGate3 · 2 years ago

I'm using the baldurian great sword on laezel and it doesn't seem to do that much damage without turning giant. It does around 35 damage with 22 strength whereas character like astarion do around 50 damage per melee turn. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is the weapon just not that great? Are there any better strength weapons to get?

As the other commenter said, but expanded.

Astarion (rogue) : 1 attack. Usually big, good single hit. Assume, using your example, 50.

Lae'zel (fighter) 2x 30 average, plus BA options such as Polearm Master or GWM. Total of 70+, more with Crits. 4x with action surge for easy 100+, which can be split among many targets

Karlach (Barbarian ) same as fighter, minus action surge, + reckless and frenzied.

Not sure where your math is different, but mine says 2h martial are OP AF.

SlitThaClit69 · OP · 2 years ago

Yeah I'm just wondering how laezel doesn't do over 30-40 damage if the baldurian great sword is supposed to take strength into account and boost the damage. It seems to do about the same damage as every other weapon I'm using. Was wondering what the best strength weapon is since there really doesn't seem to be any difference between them in terms of damage

But if you talking about rouge. Figher can hit 3 times a turn. Rouge cant.

Champion 11 / GOOLock 1 (GOO for frightened on crit). Max DEX at Lv. 4+6 and get Sharpshooter at 8.

Equip Risky Ring, one of the crit helmets, Knife of the Undermountain King, Bloodthirst dagger, The Dead Shot, Boots of Stormy Clamour, Gloves of Belligerent Skies, Ring of Spiteful Thunder and Thunderskin Cloak. Finally, use Drakethroat Glaive to put thunder damager on your bow. Shoot everyone with Arrow of Many Targets.

Everybody is frightened and dazed and suffers from reverberation all the time (if they're still alive after your turn).

All-martial build

Posted by ellimist76 · in r/BG3Builds · 6 months ago

Want to try an all-martial HM run. Hoping to keep it pure martial but would consider paladin/swords bard/bladelock if pure martial seems undoable.

So far I was thinking TB OH Monk Durge, BM Laezel, Throwzerker Karlach, Gloomstalker Rogue Astarion. I beat HM with a fire sorc build but I definitely am not amazing at the game -- I'm sure anything is possible but I'm looking for any edge I can get (without exploits). Thanks!

Funny, I'm doing the opposite right now and doing an all ranged build.

Wizard, fighter/ranger, sorlock, and druid.

Works great, but battlefield control is super important.

Good luck with your build. I think I'd do: Bladesinger fighter combo, moon druid, frenzy barbarian w/ 3 levels in thief, and paladin/bard.

Your comp should be fine. I might consider EK instead of BM if you need more tankiness and mobility. I’m doing an all-martial HM right now (no range attacks or spells on enemies allowed, limited to throwing consumables occasionally but not weapons) with a “weaker” party comp and it’s going great. Main differences are:

Dex OH monk instead of TB (I just didn’t want to use str elixirs, but TB will be better here). Main source of CC with stun and prone.

Wolf Barb Karlach - gives everyone else advantage on melee. Took elk aspect at lv 6 for more MS. Throwzerker will be better, but I didn’t want to throw.

2H Eldritch Knight - longstrider is super important for all martial party (you’ll have it from Ranger). Extra Tankiness with Shield and mobility with expeditious retreat and misty step to gap close.

Sword + Board Ancients Paladin - bonus action heal (which applies bless and blade ward) is nice, and lv 6 and 7 auras work very well for an all melee comp since everyone is so close together

A few points to consider:

Resistances: A lot of bosses have physical resistances. Avoid these by eigther using the adamantine weappons, the bone spike gloves or the Foebreaker hammer also monk and moon druid lvl 6 learn to ignor at least non magical resistances.

Items: if you have 4 similar builds, you might wanna make sure there are no overlapping itemisation. So i would at least opt for two str based and two dex based builds. Monk is great since it has very unique items most of the time.

AoE: Martials tend to be single target focussed, but there are some fights where you might want some AoE. Typical AoE martials are Tiger barb and hunter ranger.

Versatility/Roles: Again your comp will be focussed on single target nuke damage, wich is absolutly viable, but if you dont know the encounters to well you might wanna have some more options like control, healing or tanking to react to certain mechanics (and i think its way more fun that way).

So i would reccomend to adjust, your builds a little:

You might wanna have someone with radiating orb and reverbaration gear, to debuff and controll the enemys. Eigther your monk with manifestation of soul, but even better would be the tiger barbarian (eigther wield the shining shaver of skulls with a shield, the moonlight glaive with GWM feat or any weappon with the callus glow ring and the ring from the underdark tower that grants you the light cantrip, or dual wield a torch). The Tiger barb could hit and debuff multiple enemys at once proccing a cascade of radiating orb with the luminous armor.

The closest you can get to a healer might be the shatrered flail with the periapt of wound closure for great self healing and the transfere life Ilithid power to heal your teammates. That would also result in a great tank. This might be suited on eigther a throwzerker (4 attacks/heals per turn, need to be Bound by a camp caster EK until the throwzerker puts gets to Bound it himself on level 10/11 when multiclassing into EK), the tiger heart barb with the ring combination (should heal on every enemy hit in your cone) or on a fighter (preferably EK to be able to throw, with its reliable 3 attacks per round).

Speaking of fighter, battlemaster could also be a great ranged damage dealer (dex based), and also a controller since the ranged trip attack as an indefinite duration of prone, wich - when combined with fear from manacing attack - can let enemys skip a turn. Disarming attack is also great to take enemys out the fight and rally could "revive" downed allies (wich all can be done by a meele battlemaster as well, except the prone fear combination).

Lastly for a tanky build, you could get that with a dex based hunter ranger (wich has also great AoE in late game). Hunter level 7 can chose the multi hit defense, wich - combined with the defensive duelist feat - offers some great AC bonus on top of an even awesome AC with high dex and the uncapped medium armors. Only down side is, that you are limited to the three versatile/twohanded finess weappons in the game (at least, if you wanna do serious damage too).

Summary:

I would use one of the following constellations:

  • Classic OH Monk (9 OH monk, 3 thief rouge, str elixiers, 16 dex, 15 con, 16 wis, 10 cha, Tavernbrawler +1 con, ASI wis +2, typical monk gear)

  • Flail EK thrower/tank/healer (12 pure EK, 17 str 10 dex, 14 con, 16 wis, Tavernbrawler +1 str, potion of everlasting vigor str +2, tough, 2x ASI con +2, shattered Flail, periapt of wound closure, best shield and heavy armor you can find, should be your Ilithid power user, best when compleated the Z'aikhist - would fit lore wise - to use the healing-powers with your bonus action).

  • Tiger barb debuffer meele AoE (9 Tiger barb, 3 champion fighter, 17 str, 14 dex, 16 con, 10 wis, hag hair +1 str, ASI +2 str, GWM, moonlight glaive or any weappon with callus glow ring and light cantrip from EK, luminous armor, boots of stormy clamour, eventually gloves of beligerent skys)

  • Hunter ranged AoE damage dealer (12 pure hunter, 17 dex, 16 con, 15 wis, ASI dex and wis +1, sharpshooter, ASI dex +2, titan string bow, club of hillgiant strength, best uncapped medium armor, hord breaker, volley)

Or:

  • Luminous monk (9 OH, 3 thief, str elixirs, 14 dex, 15 con, 17 wis, 12 cha, tavernbrawler con +1, resilient wisdom wis +1, manifestation of soul, luminous armor, gloves of beligerent skies - maybe switch to soul catching gloves if you get them -, kushigo boots)

  • Flail throwzerker health tank/healer (5 berzerker barb, 3 thief, 4 EK, 17 str, 16 con, 14 dex, 10 wis, Tavernbrawler str +1, ASI str +2, shattered flail, periapt of wound closure, throwing gloves and ring, best cloths or capped medium armor you can find, Ilithid healing power) PS: The giant Barbarian might even more fitting if Patch 8 Drops before you start the run.

  • Ranged battle master controler (12 pure battlemaster, 17 dex, 16 con, 15 wis, ASI dex and wis +1, sharpshooter, ASI dex +2, heavy armor master, titan string with hill giant club for damage or giant breaker crossbow for debuffing, best heavy armor you can find - despite high dex, just because wie can and armor of persistance with that feat and that stats is super durable - trip, menacing, disarming and pushing attack, rally)

  • Hunter AC tank (12 pure hunter ranger, 17 dex, 16 con, 15 wis, Hag hair dex + 1, ASI dex plus 2, defensive dualist, great weappon master, best uncapped medium armor, phalar aluve -> larethians wrath -> dancing breeze, Hord breaker, multi attack defense, whirlwind, use the ranger spells if you want or just ignore them).

Looking for a Dual-Wield Fighter Build

Posted by Redditor_exe · in r/3d6 · 19 days ago

I'm about to start a new campaign with a group of friends based in a homebrew world. My previous characters have been a gloom stalker/assassin Ranger and a EB Warlock, so for this campaign I wanted to do something a bit different.

After doing it with countless builds in BG3, I want to trying playing a dual-wield based Fighter in this campaign. I know that Figher isn't the best class to go for this style with and from a pure min-max standpoint I'd be better off with a two-handed build. However, this is a bit more casual of a campaign and I really want to stick with the flavor and backstory for my character.

I don't need any super meta build or anything that tops the DPS charts (I already had to carry one party on my back with the aforementioned Ranger and don't really want to do that again), just a solid build that can put in reliable damage. If it helps any with building, I am willing to multi-class, I just want to start as a fighter. Also, the DM is also a huge BG3 fan and it probably wouldn't take me much to get him to add in the ability to gain an extra bonus action in some fashion.

You want a fighter class that doesn't have too many/important features that takes bonus actions and ideally one where you can add damage riders onto your attacks.

Battlemaster - solid, non-magical character roleplay, your manouvere dice refresh on a short rest so you can keep using a lot of them all day.
Psi Warrior - also solid but dice equal to twice profficiency bonus so you have less of them especially at low levels compared to battlemaster.
Eldritch Knight - assuming your dm lets you cast whatever with a weapon in both hands or gives you a ruby of the war mage this is nice. By lvl 7 booming blade/greenflame blade will add very solid damage each turn replacing one of your attacks. War caster will also add to your action economy. You can pick up hunters mark or hex with the shadow touched or fey touched feat (although again they will take your bonus action for the setup so only use against big monsters).

Multiclass Options:
Rouge stands out as a way to add damage each turn, in particular swashbuckler so that you have no need to hide to proc sneak attack (you don't need charisma to use this feature). You could literally go full rouge after getting fighter to lvl 6 or 8.
Paladin could be nice on an Eldritch Knight, but you would need to primarly focus on spells that buff and don't require rolls to be effective with greenflame blade/booming blade as your two attack cantrips. This way you won't need much INT. divine smite won't take your bonus action.
Barbarian - with 3+ attacks that you get rage damage bonus on if they hit is adding solid damage. Its takes a bonus action to rage though. Reckless attack would also add solid damage. Zealot barbarian adds damage on hit.
Soul Knife Rouge 3, Beast Barbarian 3 - Its 6 full levels out of fighter but it works in that you get to make 4 attacks per turn, 3 with the rouges soul knife and one with the beast barbarians claws.

fun fact -- at level 5, you can wield two nonlight weapons and attack with each of them once as part of your attack action (for full damage). You still have a free bonus action, should you still wish to snag the Dual Wielder feat for the extra AC and a free bonus action attack, or instead focus your feat juice elsewhere like Telekinetic + Fey Touched for a more gishy loadout.

Champion (although boring and passive) with Slasher + Crusher (wielding Longsword + Warhammer) is pretty awesome single target lockdown. Reduce speed and bash away! Champion in particular works because of the additional oncrit effects from Slasher+Crusher, but Psi Warrior is also pretty awesome with its Telekinetic Thrust or Battlemaster with its Push attack which can occur alongside Crusher's knockback for some extra juice.

(Granted, you can just wield a Glaive and pair up PAM with Slasher and Crusher and get about the same, if not slightly superior, effect...)

Take Fighter to 5, then go Rogue for the rest. Use finesse weapons for Sneak Attack damage. Battle Master gets you Riposte, for a second Sneak Attack in a round. Swashbuckler works well in melee

Eldritch Knight + Ruby of the War Mage would give you a versatile dual-wielder who can survive a dragon's breath to the face (Absorb Elements) or deploy Shield in a pinch.

If you can get access to a homebrew rule that'll allow you a second bonus action attack/a second offhand attack, you can use the EK7 feature and mix cantrips with weapon attacks. If you throw in Rogue, even one level, you can some skills to your capacities and have the build have lots of out of combat usefulness.

You can also legit learn healing on Eldritch Knight, and you don't even need a funky feat if your DM allows Dragonmarks.

Straight battlemaster fighter with trip attack would be solid. Trip on first attack, get advantage on the later ones. Also get some fun CC options with push attack and menacing attack.

Alternatively, you can try a crit fishing build with champion fighter and Elven Accuracy. If you do that route, you'll probably want to multiclass into something like rogue, ranger, or paladin since straight Champion would probably be both weak and boring. Also would probably want to make sure you have a good source of advantage like an allys Faerie Fire

Where's all the love for the Bastard Sword and the Bloodletter?

Posted by Kyrenaz · in r/neverwinternights · 1 month ago

So, I've been on this sub for years now, and I always see the Kukri, the Kama, the Scythe, Greatsword, Longsword, Rapier, Scimitar and all those weapons get love from this community. Never once do I see anyone look at the Bastard Sword or even mention the Bloodletter +8/+10 you get access to by the end of HotU.

As far as I can see, they are like Longswords, but better, so if you spec a fighter into using one-handed swords, then wouldn't the bastard sword just be the better choice? Fighters do get more feats than they know what to do with, so why not just take the cost of exotic weapons and grab a bastard sword over the longsword?

I know itemization is a thing, but as far as I can see, most modules, whether official or not, will supply you with a healthy supply of each weapon (even though Enserric won't become a bastard sword). As long as the module isn't based on a specific class, like rogue.

Is there some reason to not go for Bastard Swords, or just dual wield them for added damage?

Bastard sword is indeed a versatile weapon. It offers solid damage both with and without critical hits. But builds that aim for the highest damage per round tend to prefer scythes or kukris because they rely on critical hit optimization. Well...kukris at least provide strong damage for their size, but both weapons lose a significant part of their potential when facing enemies that are immune to critical hits, such as undead. These enemies are not rare, and may be common depending on the module!

Kamas are a different case though, these builds aim at delivering really good consistent damage rather than relying solely on critical hits. In the hands of monks+clerics characters that use the Divine Power spell to increase their attack bonus, they can achieve some of, if not the highest damage output in the game.

If you choose to go with a bastard sword, that is completely fine :). It works well without too much investment, and it has the advantage of being a good choice to use either with a shield for extra AC or dual wielding for good damage in general. This again means that this weapon is effective against both crit-immune enemies and normal foes, even if it falls short of the top damage numbers possible with other weapons.

I hope this helps!

I'd say it's because if you pick up Exotic Weapon Prof, you'd pick a better weapon than Bastard Sword, like the Scythe and Kukri you mentioned. The Bastard Sword isn't a bad weapon by any means, it's just that there are other Exotics that are better, generally. The Kukri has vastly superior crit chance, and the crit multi of Scythes is incredible, especially on a Weapon Master. These are just my thoughts on the matter, though, so don't take it as gospel.

Short answer: Everyone is a little over obsessed by critical range.

I do recommend taking Exotic early on if you have extra feats because you might find interesting exotic weapons along the way to use from time to time, like the Bastard Sword Dragon Slayer.

But as far as specializing in Bastard Sword, it really depends on what specific weapons are available, and I've never found a Bastard Sword interesting enough to make that a specialty. Bloodletter is not that impressive. Nameless light is quite good though. Kind of like a weak Holy Avenger for the Non Paladins.

Katana is has the same crit range and damage dice as the Bastard Sword. But has more interesting options available IMO in OC:

  • Blade of the Elements - slay elemental property.

  • Divine Fury has Stun and Elemental damage.

  • Master Li's Way has Acid damage and keen.

  • Craftable Sword Saint Legacy +4 with Sonic damage in the OC, when there are very few +4 weapons.

For a Katana, late in HotU you can buy Sword Saint Legacy +8 that does +2D6 Sonic vs Evil. Since it's only "vs Evil" you can stack on a crafted +2D6 Acid with Risolvir. This makes it one of the best 1 handed weapons since most enemies are evil you will do +4D6 elemental damage most of the time. IIRC you can also find a +12 Katana, in HotU...

So I have specialized in Katana in the OC and HotU on occasion. For SoU, I usually just go Paladin and Longsword...

Base damage is good early on, but becomes increasingly less important as you level. As you stack on enhancement bonuses, strength damage, and class features (e.g. weapon specialization), the base damage component becomes an increasingly small portion of your damage. This results in weapons with better crit range/multipliers outscaling the bastard sword as you progress.

Moreover, spending a feat on +1 average damage is inefficient compared to other options. You don't actually want to go heavy on fighter levels, so it usually comes at the cost of more valuable feats such as Knockdown, Improved Expertise, Blind Fight, or even Toughness.

Plus the Bloodletter is nothing special. Wounding and Vampiric Regeneration are weak enchantments. It's essentially just a +8 sword, which other weapon categories can easily match.

To add to this excellent explanation : from an optimization standpoint, for most exotic weapons (rule of thumb : everything but Kukri or Scythe), it's never worth the feat tax to use them, unless the module/server you play on made specific changes to the less used exotic weapons to bring them on par with the other, better options.

However, since most modules are not very hard, you'll almost never gimp yourself by choosing an exotic weapon for the fun/novelty factor of it. It's not optimal, but in solo play, that's not the only thing that matters.

1d8 vs 1d10...

BS requires exotic feat...

Is the extra 2 points of potential damage worth the feat slot, that is the question.

I only play NWN2, so I don't know what NWN1 requires to use BS.

Imo, no. The usefulness of the variable portion of the damage means less than the flat. 1d4+10 and 1d10+10 both have a minimum of 11. Thats not counting STR mod or anything else. The variable damage is just gravy at that point.

The beat part about that build/guide is there is no bs about how its soooo powerful then 5 min in gets to the point that all you need to do is be level 12 and have already picked up your BiS from act 3. Yeah thanks that's not helpful for actually progressing through the game.

Just sit back and snipe people with advantage, getting steadily more powerful as you level. Zero bs or shenanigans needed.

I HATE how so many guides are like

>Items for this build are [act 3 boss reward], [act 2 boss reward], and [act 3 boss reward]

>The key combo for this build is [level 9 class feature] and [act 2 item]

Kudos to Cephalopocalypse whose build guides go through real progressions. He will say “you should really do single class until level X as this one class, and then respec, otherwise you’re too weak without the extra attack/feat/level 3 spells.” Though even he is pretty light on act 1/2 itemization.

I play only Honor Mode nowadays and the major filter is usually just getting to level 5, sometimes 6-8 for a lot of multi classes. There’s plenty of difficult fights after that, but the bar is a lot lower for finding a strong build since there’s just a lot of room to work with.

What I really need is a well balanced party that can handle fights at level 4 with limited items, consumables and spell slots.

One annoyance I have is that certain items (ring of flinging for throw damage, the bless on heal ring) really stack the deck for certain builds/strats at this point in the game.

Exactly! Morgana's builds are designed for Act 1 and it really does shine. I follow another Youtuber who has so many class suggestions but most of it is clearly for Act 2 & 3.

Morgana's guide got me the golden dice, I did cheese Act 3 by having Gale sarifice himself, but Act 1 is where I was having troubles until I get to lv3-4.

It's been done to death, but tavern brawler, Barbarian chucker is insanely fun. Huge damage dealer with the right stuff, and you can basically run around throwing enemies at eachother. Now with Giant barbarian you can also boot people off cliffs

Tavern brawler moon druid is also great fun. Owlbear that hits with the force and precision of an orbital strike is nothing to scoff at.

And tavern brawler open hand monk is a great problem solver for all problems that can be punched to death.

In fact, tavern brawler for everyone!

You're probably trolling but full fighter is the most fun I've had in 5e and BG3. My first character when playing 5e was a fighter and now whenever I try to play something else it's just not sticking.

Shit like wizard or warlock or any of those weakass casters. Ok, very nice little buddy you cast a big fireball. Let's see how this potion of haste totalling 9 attacks tastes + great weapon master extra attack after killing something else + ilithid flight + enlarge + invisibility on my duergar battlemaster dwarf. Enjoy being prone and with no weapon until I chip away your feeble hp with 35-40 damage per swing. I clear rooms on my own.

Playing anything else feels pathetic and weird...

I'd multiclass though. Go 11 fighter and dip 1 level into fighter.

Or do a classic 6/4/2 (fighter/fighter/fighter).

My throw build with all the items is beyond insane, easily 100+ damage a turn and reverb stacking on nearby enemies with the trident is so good. I found a weird glitch with a buddy where he threw a smokepowder bomb at an enemy with a lot of health, my special trident hit right after and per the combat log it 'killed' the smokepowder bomb on the enemy which caused thunder reverb on every instance of force damage and somehow caused 200 damage in one toss....

Not to mention the Giant's Kick is incredibly satisfying.

Hey guys, I was thinking about making a third playthrough of bg3 but I'm not sure about what build I should do. For my first two playtrough I played a gloomstalker archer and a oathbreaker lockadin. I was thinking about doing a drizzt do'urden build but I've heard college of swords bad is a fun build. Can I ask why it is so good ? Also any recommendation for a different build ?

Sword bard/rogue is ridiculous. Great party face. Do all the rogue things. Sneak attacks. Flourishes. Heal. Control. It’s a lot of good stuff. Can’t wait for access to patch 8 to out Swashbuckler with it.

I’m doing a longbow focused swords bard on Tactician with 2 lvls in Fighter and it feels busted strong. Dual wielding knife of the mountain king with the 19 str club, titanstring longbow, helmet of arcane acuity, ring of the mystic scoundrel and risky ring. In a crowded fight on the first turn I can wipe half the board with the ridiculous number of arrows I can output. Plus using control spells or dissonant whispers as bonus actions is 🤌

2 upvotes on reddit
MrPoopMonster · 5 months ago

It's good because you get access to good spells like hold person and hold monster on top of being able to double your attacks using bardic inspirations charges. And the gear you get scales into the late game amazingly.

Titan string bow and club of hillgiant strength give you really solid base damage early. So when you get your extra attack at level 6 that means you can shoot a bow 4 times at a single target without extra actions. You can keep charisma fairly low like 14 (or 15 and then to 16 with hag hair or asi or whatever)with expertise in persuasion still makes most dialog checks fairly easy. Arrow of many targets plus helm of arcane acuity means your effective casting stat is really high when you need it to be. And in the very beginning of act 3 you get a ring that let's you cast your most important spells as a bonus action.

Or instead of Titan stringbow if you don't want to be an elf, you can dual weild hand crossbows and have even more attacks, but it uses up your bonus action late game.

Swords bard is (arguably) the best subclass in the game for multiple reasons:

  1. Full caster levels
  2. Fully capable martial by level 6 (extra attack, medium armor proficiency)
  3. Flourishes, slashing flourish in particular, are busted. On a ranged character, slashing flourish literally doubles your attacks and adds your bardic inspiration die to each one. There’s no other subclass feature in the game as crazy powerful as this IMO.
  4. Magical secrets at level 10, always good
  5. Multiclasses very well with a variety of classes (paladin for melee smites, thief rogue for dual wielders, fighter for weapon proficiencies + fighting style + constitution saving throws + action surge, etc).

The multiclass benefits, in particular, are so awesome it's actually become frustrating for me. Every build I come up with is like - "Yeah, but it'd be better if you just start with 6 levels of Sword Bard."

It is wild how good SB is. You can make a good case it can be the best archer and best caster AT THE SAME TIME, with 10 levels of SB to boot.

5 upvotes on reddit

The College of Swords Bard is so good because you're pretty much good at everything. Want damage? Slashing Flourishes exist. Want to be the party face? Proficiency and expertise in Persuasion/Deception. Want to be a spellcaster? Bard's spell list has great control spells in Hypnotic Pattern, Hold Person, Hold Monster & can even take two spells from other classes via Magical Secrets to get something like Command or Hunger of Hadar. Then there's the Helmet of Arcane Acuity + Band of the Mystic Scoundrel item combo from act 3 that lets you cast irresistible control spells as bonus actions.

The class can be improved with two levels into other classes since Bard level 11 & 12 don't add much besides an extra feat. Want to focus more on Ranged damage? 2 Fighter levels sounds good. Want to focus on Melee damage? 2 Paladin levels sounds good.

Fighter Assassin build?

Not looking for optimal class but I wanna play a fighter assassin dual wield character. Will probably use the alert feat to get the most out of the assassin initiative.

Should I just go pure assassin build, or go something like Fighter 6 Assassin 6?

I am abit of A multiclass noob. So i'd appreciate any help :D

Fighter (probably Battle Master) to 6 first for multi-attack and two feats (Both should be Ability Score Improvement, get your DEX to 20). Then Rogue to 3 For Assassin (Or Thief, your choice). End the game with the last 3 levels into Ranger subclass Gloom Stalker. They provide even more bonuses to stealth and give an initiative boost.

I'd argue champion for the -1 crit number. That stacks with other items that do the same.

1 upvotes on reddit
zomgeddon · 1 year ago

I thought about doing this myself, but waffled between Assassin for the alpha strike stuff or Thief for the extra bonus action (which means more off-hand attacks).

I kinda thought going fighter first would be the way, as getting to 5th level for extra attack is pretty strong. Then start leveling rogue to get the subclass.

The problem with this is I'd mostly feel like a fighter and not be doing any rogue stuff, so then maybe it'd be better to rush to Rogue 3 then focus on fighter? This would delay the extra attack so might start to feel a bit weak until... geez level 8.

Not sure what is the better path. I know eventually it'd probably feel pretty strong but it could take some time.

Tavern Brawler Thrower is the most OP especially if you go Dwarf and get this weapon that does 2d8 damage. https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Dwarven_Thrower

Tavern Brawler is crazy OP in general and adds your strength to additional sources of damage such the 1d4 throwing ring (grove) and throwing gloves (underdark).

11 levels in Fighter and 1 level in Rogue is optimal. For some reason throwing weapons apparently are able to sneak attack even if they aren't finesse weapons.

Even without this specific weapon you've got options for Eldritch Knight to make Tavern Brawler even better.

Lightning Jabber from act 1 comes to mind immediately. 1d6 piercing + 1d4 lightning before adding in the tavern brawler bonuses.

Shining Staver-of-skulls is 1d4+1 bludgeoning + 1d4 radiant and comes from act 1.

Well, tavern brawler is the most broken thing in this game, so obviously throwing EK is the most OP fighter build. You need at least 11 fighter for 3 actions, last level probably war priest.

Then there's 2h SS with titanstring which is strong but not broken like TB.

For melee there's the traditional PAM/Sentinel build which been underperforming in bg3 due to bugs with PAM implementation. Not sure if it's fixed yet, haven't tried it lately.

Don't think there's anything worthwhile with sword n board. And if you want dex ranged, you're looking at dual xbows and a different main class probably.
