TL;DR
Pure Cleric Build
A straightforward approach is to keep Shadowheart as a pure Cleric. This allows her to maintain strong healing and support capabilities while staying true to her original character theme. A Life Cleric build offers excellent healing efficiency and control [3:2], while Light Cleric can be particularly effective after certain plot developments
[5:1]. This choice ensures she remains a valuable asset to the party without complicating her role with multiclassing
[1:3].
Cleric/Paladin Multiclass
Combining Cleric with Paladin can create a powerful melee build that leverages divine smite and extra attacks. A popular setup includes 7 levels of Cleric and 5 levels of Paladin, focusing on Wisdom and Charisma for spellcasting and saving throw bonuses [2:2]
[5:5]. However, this build is multi-attribute dependent, requiring strategic use of equipment like DEX/STR gloves or STR elixirs
[5:1]. Thematically, it fits well if Shadowheart undergoes significant character development towards a more righteous path
[2:1].
Cleric/Monk Multiclass
The Cleric/Monk combination is highly versatile, offering both healing and damage capabilities. A recommended build is 6 levels of Open Hand Monk and 6 levels of Light Cleric, which provides strong reverb effects and delightful gameplay [5:1]. Alternatively, a Storm Cleric paired with Storm Sorcerer can focus on elemental damage
[3:1]. This setup aligns well with Shadowheart's potential narrative shifts and offers exciting tactical options during combat.
Alternative Builds
For players seeking unique builds, combining Trickery Cleric with Gloomstalker Ranger or Thief can create interesting stealth and ranged attack dynamics [4:2]. Another option is a Knowledge Cleric with Eldritch Knight and Monk dips, utilizing Sentinel and Great Weapon Master feats for melee effectiveness
[5:2]. These builds offer varied playstyles and can cater to different party compositions and player preferences.
In summary, the best build for Shadowheart depends on your desired playstyle and narrative choices. Whether you opt for pure Cleric, multiclassing with Paladin or Monk, or exploring alternative combinations, each offers distinct advantages and thematic coherence.
Planning to leave the subreddit once the game comes out to go in fresh and unspoilered. Want to get advice on shadowheart.
Will be running:
MC Vengance Pally/Sorc
Gale Div Wizard pure
Astarion Assassin/GloomStalker/Fighter
Shadowheart ????
Difficulty: Tactician or whatever is hardest
Mainly planning on using her as ranged support, but Im not too sure how I should go about it. Def want to keep trickery domain to stay RP friendly. I know that it will be fine either way whatever way I build her, but want to keep it not underwhelming to play her as well.
For those using shadowheart, how are you gonna build her?
Some youtuber suggested Cleric1/Bard11 .. 14wis/16cha honestly, i kinda like the idea. still a cleric at start for lore, still a healer, better support....
not actually sure thats the way im gonna go, but im seriously considering it.
Just go cleric 12
So spoilers here for those not yet done with the game. I'm only just starting act 3 so requesting no additional spoilers either.
I've just made it to Rivington and my Shadowheart has dyed her hair white. She was really starting to come into usefulness with Justiciar scimitar and shield, ever-sight ring for seeing in the shadow she got via the shield. Was really looking forward to a Dark Justiciar build but alas, she turned good this first playthrough. So now I'm looking for a thematic build to keep with the new direction, incorporating the Selunite Spear (not the Dame Aylin glaive). I found this YouTuber had a build I quite liked the notion of.
https://youtu.be/q_mdAZdpOPk?si=EFVXn6uiaBqzwuK9
This is ostensibly a Shadowheart Paladin 2/ Cleric of Light 10 that charges into battle and locks down a target with Sentinel whilst keeping her spirit guardian lawnmower up. I also like the idea of being able to keep her in sanctuary and using Moonbeam. Just really wanna involve moon/light as much as I can whilst keeping her melee efficient (Karlach and Lae'zel do the heavy lifting there, and Astarion provides help too. SH has always been the least useful till lately and the promise of Dark Justiciar just fell through :') ) I don't know much about build crafting but wanted to see if this was a feasible way to go, and if anyone has other suggestions.
My party is Karlach as mc, Beserker And Fighter/Champion with GWM; Lae'zel as Fighter Battle Tactician (I think that's what it's called, she can trip and disarm etc), Astarion as a magic subclass of Rogue. Just want Shadowheart to embrace Selune thematically and start pulling her weight since she's a good girl now.
Fought the Caravan guards upon entering Rivington and she did good, although her initiative put her one away from being last 🙃
Anyway cheers and thanks for any input and insight!
Paladin/cleric is good! A pretty niche build that I always like is 7/5 light cleric/vengeance paladin, it’s basically a light cleric with divine smite and double attack. Focus on wisdom since paladin’s spell list isn’t that useful.
If your initiative is low, you can consider taking hellrider’s longbow for an additional +3 initiative, or picking up the alert feat, which is one of the most busted feats in this game.
As for items, sacred star/blood of lathander/selune’s spear of evening are all great options. You can basically equip her with all the items that mentioned radiant orb and you’re good to go.
I'll be looking into this more tomorrow, it's getting really late here and I had to force myself to stop playing 😆 Thank you!
Respeccing Shadowheart to Light Cleric after the Nightsong gets resolved that way is a Respec I would allow at my table. It makes sense from an RP stance.
Paladin/Cleric is a great multi, though usually you usually take Paladin to at least 5 for two attacks instead of 1. Which class goes to 7 is a toss-up. Cleric for more spell slots, thus more Smites and more Spirit Guardians damage, or Paladin to 7 for aura. Either is good.
Party comp sounds good, and it sounds like you're having a lot of fun with the run. As a fellow Arcane Trickster enjoyer, mind if I ask how you have Astarion set up?
Thinking of respec Shadowheart into Storm cleric, so she can heal and dps. Any recommendations otherwise? Will be a full fire sorcerer, with some lightning. Probably running with Laezel n Astarion in addition to Shadowheart
I use life, and it's a bit ridiculous. With the right gear, her heals are insanely efficient and buff her chance to hit. Keep spirit guardians up all the time, add war caster and the highest ac you can get her to make her a high priority target that's hard to hit. She still does respectable damage but the impressive bit of that spec is the amount of damage she can mitigate.
Aiming for full 3 feats, so if multiclass will be 8-4 or 4-4-4
War cleric can be helpful if you want her to be a bit more of a Frontline fighter
A lot of options for Shadowheart. If you are thinking of Storm Cleric, you might multiclass it with Storm Sorcery. I have heard taking 2 levels of storm cleric with the rest going to storm sorcerer to be very powerful.
Another option is to make her a light cleric which is especially helpful for Act 2.
This last palythrough I struggled to find a cool class setup for shadowheart that also seemed to fit her story. Just didnt want to go full cleric and wanted a more melee setup. I actually found a fun build with shadow monk 7/trickery cleric 5. Use shadow teleport each turn to go anywhere then have the bhaal armor (vulberable piercing damage) and shars spear and shadowheart is actually doing enough damage to kill enemies. Kind of a first for me with her lol. The stun attack is also working a lot of the time.
What kind of setups have you used for shadowheart that worked well for damage? Please dont tell us about your healing build with her.........
I'm not a fan of dedicated healing builds either. My top 3 favs for SH are:
Gloomstalker 5/Trickery 7, archery focused build, can carry Phalar Aluve or Sorrow. I got Harold ASAP, and she used that well into Act 3 to bane a group of enemies with arrows of many targets.
Tempest Cleric/Storm Sorc, various combinations, can start with sorc for mobility or cleric for heavy armor. Very damage-focused build but less lore friendly.
Nature Cleric - overlap with druid, good control spells, can use torch with shilleleigh in the early game. It doesn't fall into the domain of her goddesses, but it suits SH's personality.
I'm a big fan of one-level Monk dips on Clerics, and on SH in particular because it lets you build around her spear (whichever you end up getting) without sacrificing spellcasting and with the option to wear robes.
One of my favourite Selûnite builds was a Knowledge 5/EK 6/Monk 1 with GWM/PAM/Sentinel. Add Khalid's Gift, Diadem of Arcane Synergy, Bonespike Boots and either Moon Devotion Robes or Robe of Protection and you get a very solid melee.
I’m cooking up a trickery 7/fighter 5 build with shar’s spear and my melee gloomstalker durge wearing bhaal armor, I have to pump her with giant elixirs so she does damage, but it’s working fine so far. The cleric utility is a huge plus and extra attack gives her more juice
I did that build on my first durge character and it was a lot of fun. Using necrotic spirit guardians allows you to still use shadow step because it doesn't generate light like the radiant version does.
I did the shadow monk thing as well similar to you on a solo playthough. I felt like the Cleric part wasn't really doing a lot, so I just dropped it and instead went Shadow Monk 6 / Thief 4 / Fighter 2. This felt great both as a coherent build that could solo the game and as a thematic choice for her.
Alternately the healing build IS a fantastic damage build - Sorc 1 / Cleric 11 and build for Rad Orbs/Reverb. I've also done a solo run with this build, so it certainly does the damage we need at all stages in the game (I was worried about Myrkul, but it didn't end up being a problem at all).
Upcoming patch 8 will let you improve this with 2 levels in druid to ensure you never lose concentration.
Hey, I'm on my first playthrough and chose to free the Nightsong, so I'd like to change Shadowheart's war cleric. Light cleric makes the most sense, I've played it before and really liked it, only dropped it because it didn't make sense thematically.
I'd probably want to multiclass though, I've never played monk or paladin, but I think both make sense here. However, I might have read that cleric/paladin don't actually go well together. As of monk, I've only found a dark justiciar build.
I guess I'll keep playing her as usual, running around with spirit guardians, casting support spells and blood of lathander/phalar aluve. But I'd like a bit of a different twist.
Do cleric/paladin or cleric/monk builds work? Can you recommend some?
I'm open to other suggestions.
One build I came up with was:
Life/Knowledge 5/EK 6/Monk 1 with Sentinel/GWM/PAM
Core gear: Selune's Spear, Selunite Robe, Dex Gloves
Cleric/monk does indeed work and is extremely good. 6 Open Hand 6 Light cleric is a very strong reverb build and is just delightful to play. 6 OH 6 tempest is great also for knockback punches and Call Lightning burst. 6 shadow monk 6 trickery is excellent also but is much better aligned with SH's evil/Shar path. Can say more on any of these if they sound interesting.
Cleric/paladin can work, but is quite multi attribute dependent. Works best with either DEX/STR gloves or STR elixirs so you can get to 16 in both WIS and CHA. One of the better versions is 6 vengeance 6 war cleric, with a reverb focus, or even 10 war 2 paladin as a hybrid support/damage build. In both cases Phalar Aluve is probably your best weapon, and concentrate on Hold for autocrits or Spirit Guardians for more passive damage/reverb.
You dont really need 16 in Charisma. You really only need Paladin for Smites. Everything else you want to be using Cleric for. Strength and Wisdom are your only focus.
Hmm, I have to say in a lot of cases I don’t agree. In paladin dip cases like 10 nature or war 2 pal, for sure, exactly as you say.
But any build that goes to 6 paladin levels wants CHA for the massive saving throw bonus. As well as for any BA smites you may want to use, in many cases Channel Oath abilities, and even some spells (like Ensnaring Strike or Moonbeam for Ancients).
If you don’t want any of that, but do want smites and extra attack, something like 5 vengeance/devotion 7 knowledge cleric is pretty decent and can work as you say.
I'm unfamiliar with paladin/cleric but I think the core mechanics for paladin is divine smite, so I guess for the cleric/paladin build I'd actually be fighting in melee?
Yes, they are melee builds, usually with GWM and a two hander.
And I actually forgot one of the best ones as of patch 7 - 6 ancients 6 nature cleric. You use Shillelagh and a staff with GWM to go all WIS/CHA, and don't even need to boost STR or DEX.
Im old school i like my healers, pure life cleric is amazing suport and control
The narrator implies it's seluna that gives shadow heart her strength after pivotal plot point. So any good or neutral aligned domain makes sense
I want to know your opinions on how you build and set her up
I use her in almost every playthrough. In my opinion, the strongest build is to stack ALL of the items that proc when a character heals someone. That's the helmet from saving the Grove, the gloves from the tiefling leader, the ring from Volo etc.
That allows Shadowheart, with a bonus action and a level one spell slot to heal the target, heal herself, give the target blade ward, give the target bless, give the target a free disengage etc. You can basically turn her into an insane value machine.
In a pinch she can cast guiding bolt and necrotic touch and do massive damage as well. Mace of Farie fire to give advantage to companions. And her AC is pretty high with a shield.
She's basically just THE BEST support character.
So what feat do you give her? Just a wisdom- boost? I had her dabble in druidry to give her Thorn Whip and Thunderwave for high ground shenanigans, but wasn't blown away by it.
I have tried that too, but putting her Wisdom to 18 seems to be the best use of the level 4 feat.
Add the Spear "Visions of the Absolute" to the mix and she will also contribute in a fight with some low damage and blinded condition
The Shield of the Absolute also gives you an aoe buff+debuff, which is incredibly handy if you feel like getting branded.
I save her spell slots for inflict wounds or guiding bolt. I use potions to heal instead.
I always place down invoke duplicity for advantage to attacks first, then I just keep casting inflict wounds (3d10) on the enemy with the highest hp.
I don't bother wasting spell slots on low hp enemies. I just attack with a torch to help out a bit and make sure no one is obscured by shadows.
She’s my Bless bot. I give her all the items that buff her healing (but only because there isn’t much else for a cleric right now), and take the +2 Wisdom at level 4. Weapons are Spear and Shield.
During fights she casts bless and in later rounds spams guiding bolt, or inflict wounds with the occasional melee or crossbow attack mixed in if the fight seems to easy to waste spells on. A healing word every now and then should someone go down.
i just spam guiding bolts...
No this isn't a romance thing I promise, I already unintentionally romanced laezel cause I didn't unlock karlach until I was 80% towards act 1💀. That being said, my shadowheart build is messy at best. I intended for her to be a healer, but she barely has any spells that can heal a good amount (ill provide a picture of all spells she knows). Plus she has her bow which is okay for the most part, but honestly she's kind of hindering my team. I've been really considering replacing her with karlach, because I've been hearing she hits like a mack truck. But I already have myself who is a barbarian and laezel who is a fighter. I've been struggling because I don't know if I should add another melee based character to my party. I would like to have a healer but my healer frankly sucks at healing. In my case is shadowheart still a better option or is karlach too good to pass up?
FYI, healing is not meant to be a primary action in DnD. The most effective way to prevent damage in DnD is kill the thing doing the damage. Spell slots are just too valuable. The one exception is healing downed teammates so they’re back in the fight. That’s what healing word is for.
What clerics are best at is buff spells, like bless, and AoE damage (spirit guardians is one of the best spells in the game). If you don’t have another character with enhance ability I think you should bring shadowheart.
The only exception the healing rule is life cleric, which can put out MASSIVE healing with its channel divinity feature, and combined with some magic items that turn healing into buffs, it can make honour mode a cake walk
Bring her to withers and respec. She can be a great healer
That's what I'm doing lol, but I'm still finding myself trying to choose between her and karlach
I play in a bunch of party configurations, but my two main groups are like so:
1 Fighter -- 1 Fighter w. Bow -- 1 Wizard -- 1 Cleric
1 Fighter -- 1 Fighter w. Bow -- 1 Purple-Skinned Paladin -- 1 Cleric
Which means I do use Astarion, but only for specific scenes (sneaking, backstabbing), and Wyll pretty much sits at home waiting for Act 3, and/or in the unlikely event that Gale is kidnapped.
Make her a light cleric if you want max spell damage. Fireball and a great channel divinity option will make her an excellent healer. Make her a life cleric if you want her to do max healing. And a war cleric if you want her to be able to hit things with weapons.
All Clerics have good support spells but you could also try out Tempest Domain. Then she gets super strong Thunder and Lightning spells which can be boosted to deal maximum damage by using Channel Divinities.
Respec her as life cleric, profit
I've been trying Shadowheart as a Valour Bard because I've never tried it, and gave her a level of Wizard so she can learn even more spells, and it's been pretty fun. Not optimized, but it's an evil multiplayer run, so no Karlach. our group is a Vengeance Pally, Spore Druid, Assassin Rogue, and WizBard and we're pretty OP.
Everyone talks about the two level fighter dip but not so many talk about the one level wizard dip, it’s stupid powerful.
I didn’t get the Wizard dip thing until someone said you can learn elemental summons from a scroll. So it doesn’t matter if you have high Int.
So just one up to two is enough for my Arcane Trickster Rogue to learn 2nd level spells when I get the slots?
Oooos I’m romancing Lae’zel is not a consolation prize. It’s a great story.
I feel like I'm not using her right.
She's basically used for bless and an occasional heal for me and that's about it. And it's not like my fights end super fast, i just don't seem to use her...
I rarely melee, rarely use an offensive spell on her, not even utility spells so it feels like a wasted slot in my party but I'm just sure I'm using her wrong so can anyone recommend a guide for her or at least some pointers?
Respec from trickery to light and then you'll never want to be without her in the party
For act 1 at least, I like having her equipped with the luminous armor (look up what that does, it's kind of broken) and then load up with radiant-based attacks to exploit that armor's ability.
Later on her Spirit Guardians can also be pretty helpful for crowd control (helped a lot in a certain boss fight from her personal quest, where she was basically a one woman army), and some of the level 6 spells (like Blade Barrier) made act 3 bosses stop in their tracks.
Light is where it's at for a first playthrough, IMO. Nice balance between party support and offensive power.
I'm running her as Life for a second playthrough. Seems like a solid choice if you want to lean in towards pure support.
Trickery Clerics kind of sucks generally speaking unless you want to be super clever with stealthing around or something, make her pretty much any other Cleric besides Knowledge (as that's for skill monkey stuff then combat) and she'll be better for you most likely.
Though Clerics have great offense that you should consider leveraging, Guiding Bolt, Spiritual Weapon, and Spirit Guardians are great spells when you get them and the latter two stay good pretty much forever. For a newer player I'd suggest playing Light Domain, it's just free utility in Warding Flare and extra damage options with Fireball to pair with Spirit Guardians. Life is also fine if you desperately want a heal bot Cleric.
What level are you? This would help.
level 9
You're further than me. But do you know what role you want her to do? Have you Re-spec her at all?
Healing just sucks once you get to Act II. It's better to Prevent than to Heal.
My friend and I are in an honor mode run. We have OP ranged swords bard, summoner spore druid, and battle master Lae'zel with the circlet that gives all your undead minions resistance to physical damage. Shadowheart is a full light cleric with radiating orb gear, which is cool when she's using spell slots, but her short rest/no resource cost stuff isn't as good. Unfortunately this is an evil playthrough where we raided the grove, so potent robe and a few other builds are out. Ideas?
Open hand monk? Will synergize with your short rests nicely and it's pretty damn powerful. Probably have a bunch of unarmed junk sitting around i would guess.
That's true. I'll have to look and see if we sold anything deal breaking. We've kept a lot of more powerful items just in case
Even better, 6/6 or 5/7 Light Cleric/OH Monk. Keep all your radiant gear but now you can go punch crazy. It's a really fun build and my favorite RadOrb build. Works really well with short rests as well!
9 Open Hand/3 Thief is one of the strongest builds in the game, especially with a Bard for Song of Rest. The Graceful Cloth is the only item you really want from Act 1; most of the rest of what you might pick doesn't come in until much later, and the build isn't especially gear-reliant regardless.
Open hand monk can still do all the Reverb Radiant Orb stuff, just get then to Level 6. You can still go Cleric after if you want, if you really need Cleric Spells
Light and Tempest Cleric are fun. Death Cleric looks like a blast too
I'm stoked for death domain more than any other patch 8 subclass (largely thanks to Caduceus from Critical Role)
Minor caveat in that Cad was a Grave domain cleric, not Death. Grave is more of a "circle of life" type of thing, Death is more of "murder is cool" type of thing
I was also confused. Death domain is still really cool though and one of the better cleric subclasses imo
I know you said she was already a light cleric, but if you dip just one level into storm sorcerer, she can fly. Your rad orb build + spirit guardians + flying is a super powerful build, just fly over all enemies and tag them with damage and a few stacks of orb
Honestly I'm close enough to act 3 that I may give her the upgraded tadpole instead
1 storm sorc / 11 light, life or tempest cleric
Light Clerics are fun, but as they use a lot of resources they rely on rests.
I had a lot of fun with my Radiant Poisoner build for Shart.
It's a cleric / thief with a lot of mobility and debuffing enemies with RadOrb, Reverb and Poisoned. It does decent damage, but it actually makes everything easier for the team.
The mobility with Spirit Guardians is something really underestimated until you see the impact across the battlefield.
Looking for one, preferably support Cleric combo.
Any radiant orb stacking build works great as a support, and is thematic for Shart
Probably not the strongest, but I like Nature Domain Cleric.
Spike Growth is really nice to slow enemies down AND deal heavy damage to enemies moving through it. Combos very well with Hunger of Hadar, as Blind enemies cannot jump out of it and they take a lot of damage every turn.
Plant Growth slows them down even move (1/4 speed!) and needs no Concentration!
Lashing Whip cantrip is nice to pull enemies to a Cloud of Daggers, Darkness or sometimes pull them off ledges.
This with a polearm master/sentinel is super fun and you can use it to keep enemies in the thorns/etc.
tavern brawler monk
but for support cleric, Life Cleric is obviously the best, had good items with healing synergy, like the hellrider's pride or The Whispering Promise (both obtainable in early act I btw)
as someone else mentioned, Nature Cleric is also cool for support and as a bonus: in older edition of the game, nature was a domain Shar worshipper could pick, so it's somewhat lore accurate
I've made Astarion 7 open hand monk with 5 thief rogue(for uncanny doge /half damage taken) with tavern brawler. He hits hard! he has 24 strength(+2 from drow alchemist potion +2 from mirror of loss).
For Clerics, Tempest is the highest damage. Using create water to wet the enemies, an upcast L5 Call Lightning w/ destructive wrath is doing 100 damage by cleric level 9.
Haste with upcasted call lightning is absurd.
12 Light cleric IMO since with this you can face tank with her as well as doing great CC, heavily item dependent tho, Use all the radiant orb and reverberation equipment available with this she will be unstoppable even on tactician. Cast Spirit Guardians (Radiant) go near enemies and they are basically useless
