TL;DR
Advanced Ballet Classes
For advanced dancers looking for open classes, several studios come highly recommended. Steps on Broadway is frequently mentioned for its variety of classes and experienced instructors [1:2]
[3:1]. Peridance also offers advanced classes and is noted for having some teachers who use live pianists
[4:1]. Ballet Academy East (BAE) is praised for its professional adult classes and well-maintained facilities
[4:4].
Beginner/Intermediate Ballet Classes
If you're looking for beginner or intermediate classes, the Joffrey Ballet School offers crowded but comprehensive classes that include beginner pointe [4:2]. Ballet Arts provides classes at a slightly lower price point than other studios, making it a great option for those on a budget
[4:1]. Gibney Dance Center is another option for more relaxed ballet classes, including adult pointe classes with Kat Wildish
[4:3].
Budget-Friendly Options
For those seeking affordable classes, Ballet Arts charges about ten percent less per class compared to other studios [4:1]. The New York Theater Ballet School offers inexpensive classes, especially for those with a New York ID card
[2:2].
Special Mentions
Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn has good adult programs [3:1], and Finis Jhung is noted as an incredible master teacher whose classes are worth attending if you have the opportunity
[5:3]. Additionally, Broadway Dance Center offers a wide range of dance styles beyond ballet, which might be appealing if you're interested in exploring other forms of dance
[3:1].
In summary, New York City offers a wealth of options for ballet enthusiasts at all levels, from beginner to advanced. Whether you're looking for professional instruction, budget-friendly classes, or specialized adult pointe classes, there's likely a studio that fits your needs.
Hey! I'm looking for an open ballet class in NYC this week. I've danced for 15 years so I'm pretty advanced. If anyone has any studio recommendations I'd really appreciate it 💕💕💕
Steps on Broadway, Broadway Dance Center, Peridance or Gibney
Steps.
NY Community Ballet has open level classes held at Battery Dance.
Seconding Peridance. Ballet Academy East is also a good studio on the UES.

Classes are very inexpensive and if you have a New York ID card it’s even less
Been going for the last four years. Excellent instruction imo, specializes in Cechetti
hello! If someone is willing to, could you drop some names so i could check them out? I’ve already done some google map searching but it seems that there are more than I thought since i’ve had people irl tell me about other schools/academys. I’m not sure if this will make a difference but i’m looking for pure beginner classes, also places that offer other things aswell (other dances, music, vocal training, etc). Regardless of what i’m asking, any name given helps me out!
How old are you? Have you ever taken ballet class before?
Broadway dance center has a large variety of classes that might be what you're looking for.
Mark Morris (in brooklyn) has some good adult programs.
Gibney dance center has more relaxed ballet classes (think ballet for non ballerinas)
Peridance has ballet classes but they might be too advanced.
I don't know much about these programs but theres probably also beginner ballet classes at the American Ballet Theater, Joffery Ballet, Dance Theater of Harlem, and New York City ballet.
Classes will run you anywhere from $15-30 per class.
Hi all! I am a recreational ballet dancer who has been dancing for about 9 years coming to NYC for a couple of months this summer. I am looking for beginner/intermediate adult classes, particularly at a studio that would allow me to use my pointe shoes during barre/that has a beginning adult pointe class (I am slowly getting back en pointe after a couple of years off). I'm also on a pretty strict budget, so anywhere that has student discounts/good deals would be great!! Thanks in advance for any recs :)
joffrey, STEPS, BAE, each have beginner-intermediate classes and offer beginner pointe, and especially joffrey it’s not uncommon to see pointe shoes in beginner technique classes
Check out Kat Wildish’s adult pointe classes at Gibney! Kat is amazing.
Will have to agree with another commenter about BAE. Maybe I’m a little biased cause I’ve danced there for over 15-20years lol but amazing and professional adult classes for beginner/intermediate classes
BAE is also my favorite :)) and clean well kept studios and lobby.. unlike many other studios in the city
Mark morris in brooklyn
If you are on a budget, Ballet Arts charges about ten percent less than other studios, on a per class basis, and the facility is stunning. You have a couple of months - try all the studios! We are so lucky in NYC to have such great choices in studios. They each have a different vibe. Highly recommend the classes at Steps, Peri (although only some of the Peri teachers use a live pianist), Joffrey (they get crowded), Ballet Arts as aforementioned, and Ailey. Also Gibney. If you need specific teacher/level recommendations, DM me.
Does anyone have any experience with studios who have good programs for (total) beginners in ballet? I'm 23 and have wanted to dance for a while and have finally decided to give it a go :) I know there must be some good places in the city so I was wondering if anyone has any specific recommendations?
steps on broadway's lowest level (I forget if it's called basic or something else -- "beginner" does expect some years of experience) and ballet arts' absolute beginner are fair classes if you don't mind larger classes. broadway dance center usually does an absolute beginner workshop every season that caps off for more individual attention, though i'm not the biggest fan of their instructors.
joffrey and alvin ailey (where finis jhung, mentioned by another commenter, teaches) also offer classes, but i've never been since they're further away from me.
Steps has always been my favorite. They used to have a class called "Absolute Beginner," but I believe it's since changed names to "Basic Ballet."
And Finis is an incredible master teacher. I've taken classes and workshops with him and really adore the way he teaches; everyone who has the opportunity and curiosity should learn as much as they can from him!
I have been to classes at both Ballet Academy East and the Joffrey and for absolute beginners I recommend BAE :) When I went to Joffrey as someone who's been dancing 9 years on and off I found their advanced beginner to be pretty intermediate.
thank you for letting me know 😊
Came here to say Ballet Academy East! I took intermediate classes there that I loved, but they also have absolute beginner adult classes. Pretty sure those are great too, I really liked it there.
Not sure if he’s in Manhattan, but check out Finis Jhung
I've had a good experience at Ballet Academy East (3rd Ave btw 92nd and 93rd). That said, I took the beginner classes there as a way to get back into dance after having stepped away for a few years.
thank you ! i will check it out
Hey all! I’m curious if anyone knows of an earlier morning open class in the city. I work a corporate job now and often am in the office till pretty late precluding most evening classes. My dream would be like a 7-8:30 am class, but I’m even open to an 8-9:30 am situation in a pinch.
I love starting my day with class or a workout and class is doable on the weekend, but the weekday schedules are just not tenable so I end up at the gym or pilates most mornings. It would seem, in the day and age of early morning boutique fitness, there are enough adult ballet dancers working jobs like mine that this timeframe for class would maybe make sense?
On another note, I also do have several friends who do teach - is there maybe enough interest in a class like this that it would be worth starting one up?
Omg thank you!!! This was so niche and I think I looked it up here like a month ago and didn’t find anything - something in the air, I guess!!!
No problem! I thought it was funny to see this problem that someone else was trying to fix in the same sub 😂💖
+1 totally agree with everything you said. WOULD LOVE a 7-830 class
I saw your other post from last week just now! Yes! It looks like there might be someone trying to start one: https://www.reddit.com/r/BALLET/s/XAUVTN1ViH

Reservations are required, that way we do not overfill, as our class sizes are small so that we can provide a low-key atmosphere for all :) But a day or even an hour before is fine! Our Google Form gets updated constantly. Thanks!
Thanks! I am hoping to take a class soon, but work is always changing so I wouldn't know until the day of.
So $18 to practice around bad dancers with no booze & you pick the music?
You can always use your $18 at a bar with a jukebox and spare us from the toxicity.
Cannot recommend the adult classes at PPA more! We are so lucky to have this space in Astoria!
Moving here this summer! Preferably not something like barre fitness, I’m looking for classical ballet classes, thank you!
In addition to New Haven Ballet (already mentioned here) there are also classes at Neighborhood Music School. And there’s a fun adult class on Mondays at Dance Athletics in Hamden, but it’s not super focused on technique.
new haven ballet offers adult drop in classes!
In addition to the drop in adult classes offered throughout the week with New Haven Ballet already mentioned, Wallingford Academy of Dance and Music offers adult dance classes in tap and hip hop. Maybe Jazz too?
I appreciate the low-stress adult ballet classes at Neighborhood Music School. Their summer session is just six weeks long, a good length for testing it out.
Hello! I’m a teen boy and I have loved ballet ever since I laid my eyes on the style, and really wanna take classes, but I am absolutely terrified to take a class. I have no idea what class to even sign up for because most of them are by age chronologically so to take a beginner class I’d have to be with five year olds. And theres adult classes but those are for 18+, which I am not. I am also horrified of being judged because the classes are literally all girls and all people i don’t know. Advice is appreciated! Thanks!!
Take the adult classes. It’s not a big deal. Nobody is there to judge anybody else.
Also, while you've probably heard nightmare stories of toxic behavior in ballet, that's mostly non-existent in recreational adult classes. The people in these classes are super supportive and will make you feel hope for humanity

Talk with the Director or other lead position and get their thoughts. And do it!! I just started learning the guitar and I’m 49. Three weeks in kill6- and I’m horrible and super happy!
Boys in ballet are in demand. There aren’t enough guys to do lifts and partner dancing with the girls so whatever studio you choose will want you to succeed.
I’ve been scouring the web for ages trying to find a company, ANY company no matter how small that accepts adult ballet dancers. I’m 26 and very dedicated to dancing. I’m not “19 year old that’s been dancing since age 4” good but I’m okay and extremely meticulous about learning and improving. I would love more than anything to join a company and perform even just every once in a while. I live in New York, not the middle of nowhere USA so either there really is nothing or my Google results don’t want me to be great. Every search only shows classes available, which I already have plenty of. Does anyone know of a company here that is for amateur dancers? I really don’t want this dream to die 😓
Oh and if anyone has experience in amateur/adult companies, please share!
I don't know if they perform, but a lot of regular studios have adult classes occasionally. It could lead you to find what you're looking for too, just knowing other adult dancers.
Have you asked any of the teachers of the classes you are attending? Asked others in your classes? It seems that is the type of question that is unlikely to get good results from a computer search so asking here and other places that dancers frequent is a good idea.
Don't know if it would be helpful or if it is available to you but if it is have you tried nextdoor?
If it doesn't exist, it could probably be made.
New York is a good place to try. Talk to the other people in your classes, and start small.
All the best!
There’s the Rochester Adult Ballet Company. I think they were founded this year? Or last maybe? I’m not sure if they’re still having auditions. You can look them up on Instagram.
A promising start! Thank you
