I’ve been to Intro to Hip Hop dance at Free Mind, the studio! They have lots of different classes, too. Not far from the Jefferson L. Def recommend.

Peridance has a variety of dance classes that are offered multiple times per day/week. Taking one class can be a definite pathway to other forms of dance, as you’ve already been experiencing! 👏

Can I ask where you’re taking the ballet classes? Been looking for a good studio to get back into it!

To supplement your options, the Dimenna center in hells kitchen lets you rent their spaces. I think the building is actually owned by Baryshnikov believe it or not

Ripley Grier probably has the most options. New 42nd St Studios is fancy with big rooms. Shetler Studios has low rates.

Ripley Greer studios is my go to. Very easy booking and good rates.

You can use the subway for unlimited amounts of time if you just yell "Show time!" first.

SpaceFinder is also a good place to find space.

The only hip-hop dance studio in SLO was Street Heat. They’ve been closed for a little while now, but some of their instructors migrated to CORE Dance (which has multiple styles being taught, including hip-hop).

For dance, check out Ryan’s Academy of Dance (RAD) - they used to have hip-hop classes. Ryan is fantastic.

For drums/guitar Music Motive is likely your best bet aside from seeking out individual instructors. Stefanie is also great.

u/Chance-Fix-3477 -- hi! i'm in the process of relocating to jersey city and i'm also looking for affordable spaces for teaching my dance class, but also just looking to tap into the community of dancers around here. did you find anything promising? or do you have any suggestions for where to connect with folks in the dance community? i'm especially interested in finding POC-centric dance communities :) thanks!

I've put together a longer response as this is something I've wrestled with for my own children. Hopefully these thoughts help you and your son.

As a long time dance music enthusiast with the same goals for my kids... I think they need significant drug and sobriety context before going to any of these events. The number one concern I have for my kids is to give the right first impressions/examples.

1. All the dance clubs are 21+, the only 18+ opportunities are going to be specific shows/events.
2. 18+ shows these days are a fucking shitshow. These kids are sloppy AF. Anyone who remembers the PLUR days can attest - even though there was a stigma back then too, there were really wholesome parts to dance music events. That wholesome part is pretty much gone - it's about getting fucked up for these kids.
3. He doesn't have the context to understand that the folks his age at these events are largely not good role models. Even your most impactful words can't really overcome the experience of seeing others his age be irresponsible with themselves.
4. Honestly, if he could get in to places like House of Yes, that kind of crowd is a much better type of role model, mostly because they are actually about the dance and the fun and less about the drugs and getting fucked up than today's 18yo's. They are also largely older, which makes sense.
5. My suggestion is to take him to a camping music festival as his first entry into this kind of scene. Many of those festivals have entire family-only areas, they usually have all sorts of fun and engaging and creative activities, and in general the crowds are much more easy going and wholesome towards a family than you'll ever find in a club. He'll no doubt be exposed to people on drugs, but in a context where he'll see it's not just about getting as F'd up as possible.
6. Check out DAYBREAKER events. These are sober raves, they start at 9:00am, start with an hour of yoga followed by Disco and other kinds of joyous dance-first music, and of course are completely sober. This is the kind of first impression/role model that will provide the context so that we can go to see dance music artists in clubs together later in life.

Those are my thoughts, hopefully they help - I'm no expert but I've met so many families that have taken this route and their kids are totally awesome because of it.

Check out residentadvisor.com for event listings! They always have good stuff, lots of different types of venues too. Not sure what events are 18+ though.

Not for 18 y.o, no. Webster hall, sometimes, but usually 19+. Other than that, college nights have been largely eradicated.

Someone else said Ballroom Hub, and while they are fantastic (the floor, the owners, the people that go there), it can be a bit narrow and it's noticeable with the greater number of people that seem to be on the floor.

Manhattan Ballroom Dance is another option, their floor is bigger, and there seem to be fewer couples that use it during the day. The community here isn't as good as Ballroom Hub though.

Stepping Out Studios I wouldn't really recommend for standard dancers. The main room has two large support poles, and the side rooms are really only large enough to even practice Latin in. Add all the Latin coaches here, and this studio clearly focuses on that.

u/kittycatcay are you actually in NYC? Are you in a suburb? New Jersey has many large studios.

1. Rogers Hackensack - The Demidovas & McDonald's own this place.
2. Rogers Fairfield - Same as above.
3. Starlight Dance Center - This is where Giampiero Giannico teaches.

A lot of standard dancers seem to practice where the most space is - which doesn't happen to be in Manhattan. I know coaches do travel to NYC, but floor fees are more expensive, and the general quality of the floor as well as the size isn't as good.

Chiming in a bit late on this, but if you're willing to trek out to Brooklyn, Brooklyn DanceSport Club has a nice floor and is pretty cheap. It can get busy in the evenings, but if you can go earlier in the day or sometime in the afternoon you can get a very large floor pretty much all to yourself.

Actually, Ballroom Hub is in fact less expensive and probably has the best prices in the city. Whereas Stepping Out charges $20/hour/couple, Ballroom Hub charges $15 for the same. According to their website, Stepping Out charges $145 for a monthly pass, and while Ballroom Hub charges the same, they also have a pretty decent pro-rating system.

It's owned by Igor Litvinov and Renata Shvarts, who are both incredibly nice people as well and reliable in terms of maintaining the studio, and listening to the complaints of their customers.

Ballroom Hub is the nicest floor for smooth and standard, and I practice there myself because I like it the best, but if you really want cheap then head over to Stepping Out Studios on W 26th Street. It is not as nice a floor, has two big poles, and is full of Latin dancers, but it is less expensive.
