What Redditors are Saying

Best Basketball Shooting Drills

TL;DR

  • Focus on form shooting and repetition.
  • Utilize drills that simulate game-like situations.
  • Consistency and variety in practice are key.

Form Shooting and Repetition

One of the most recommended methods for improving shooting skills is to focus on form shooting. This involves practicing shots around the rim and midrange without jumping, which helps smooth out your shooting motion [3:1]. It's important to get a ton of reps in, but vary the types of shots you take—mixing off-the-dribble and catch-and-shoot scenarios can be beneficial [3:1].

Game-Like Situations

Simulating game-like situations during practice can significantly improve shooting performance. One suggestion is to incorporate bad passes into catch-and-shoot drills to mimic real-game conditions [3:1]. Another effective drill is playing "21" on a half court, which provides quick, live, high-pressure defensive repetitions and encourages natural move execution [3:2].

Around the World Drill

The "Around the World" drill is a popular method to enhance shooting accuracy. It consists of shooting from five spots outside the 3-point line, taking five shots at each spot, and calculating your shooting percentage out of 25 shots [5:1]. Repeating this drill for multiple sets can help improve overall shooting performance.

Consistency and Variety

While consistency in practice is crucial, incorporating variety is equally important. Changing up the types of shots and drills prevents monotony and keeps practice engaging. Additionally, recording videos of your skills can provide valuable feedback and help identify areas for improvement [5:2].

Additional Resources

Several users shared links to videos and resources that could be helpful in developing shooting skills. These include TikTok and Facebook reels as well as YouTube channels dedicated to basketball training [1:2], [1:3], [2:1]. Exploring these resources can offer new ideas and techniques to incorporate into your training regimen.

Not a drill, but as a general team rule to help shooting percentages, tell your players that the shooter is NOT allowed to get-back on defense. I see way too often, shooters are so anxious to get-back on defense, that they don't even finish their shot (especially from the corner). They start running back while the ball is still in the air. Ideally, they should hold their follow-through and not move from their landing spot until after the ball goes-in the basket.

I learned this myself because I always shoot better in half-court pick-up games vs. full court. I'm a point guard and was conditioned to be the one who has to get back on defense. Since there's no getting back in half court, I shoot much better. Took me a while to figure this out.

As a side note, because of this, you should tell whoever is guarding a shot on the other team, to take off after the shot. A couple of cherry-pick layups from doing that and the other team's shooters will rush their shots because they'll be worried about getting-back.

Get 3 people and go play 21 on a half court. This is one of the fastest ways to get quick, live, high defensive pressure repetitions in, and helps to teach natural move execution rather than having to premeditate every move you do first.

For shooting do a bunch of form shooting around the rim and at midrange do a bunch of no jump jump shots it will help your jumper be more smooth and less choppy. Then getting a ton of reps in helps but change up the reps don’t do the exact same thing every time. Do off the dribble and catch and shoot shots. Also for catching and shooting make the pass coming to you be a bad pass so it’s more game like.

For dribbling become really good at change of pace also do a bunch of variations of two ball dribbling. Freestyle dribbling for 5 minutes straight also helps at becoming more shift. Last thing I’d say off the top of my head for dribbling is learn how to do 5-6 moves really well because everything is a read and react so you expect your first move to work but say they turn their body on your cross then do a btb wrap around and cross their body again because everything is a counter to something else

For finishing Mikans are a basic drill but you can make them harder by scooting farther out and something that helps is jump from somewhere like the free throw line and finish before hitting the ground helps with soft touch also get really good at the extended finish

And lastly some YouTubers I’d recommend Hennen Workouts Basketball, By Any Means Basketball, and The Mid Range are all great channels

[Help] what are your favorite drills?

Posted by TonyLescano · in r/BasketballTips · 6 years ago

Summer break is just about to start in my country, and that means season is over for about 3 months. Atm i am the 13th man in my team, since I played basketball for the first time ever about a little over a year ago and lack overall experience. Im also pretty short, im about 5'7/5'8 at 19yo (people in my country are shorter in average than in the USA, so my height is kinda just under average). Anyway, im looking to spend these 3 month working on my overall game as much as posible to try and get a regular spot on the team. So, I was wondering, what are your favorite drills? Which ones you recommend the most? Is there any guide, website or something I should follow? Thanks!

Focus on your shooting. Getting the ball in the basket is what counts. So I suggest doing around the world. Which consists of you shooting from 5 spots outside the 3pt line. Each spot shoot be 5 shots and at the end you do your percentage out of 25. You do that for 5 sets, and your shot will improve. Dribbling and getting to the basket will become easier because defenses have to stop your outside shot.

what’s the best drills/workouts i can do when practicing alone? (desc)

Posted by [deleted] · in r/BasketballTips · 3 years ago

ranked on my worst to best

my shooting is very 50/50 and my form is pretty ugly. i aspire to be a spacer but i can’t if my shooting is shit.

my layups are also bad. i suck when people pass to me under the net, find it easier to shoot a jumpshot rather than a shot near the net. i’m also really bad at contact layups, if i get pushed a little bit going up, i completely miss.

in defence i’m just lazy and my dribbling is pretty decent.

It’s sounds like you are pretty new (or terrible!) OP, so the biggest t hing is getting a feel for the ball. Your hands should miss the ball when it’s not there.

I recommend what /u/solo_824 said, but especially the Mikan drill. You get to practice rebounding, jumping, left hand, right hand, and it is the easiest drill to do solo.

Shooting is rep rep rep. Making contact layups is about strength, touch and being in a game scenario. Defense lol man nobody can help lazy defense. It’s a thing where you gotta WANT to play defense.

as long as your shooting form is good you will see the improvement as you keep shooting. if you have enough practice time i would recommend in the shooting practice first start from the right underneath of the rim and take nothing but net shots like 50 times and one step back after each cycle until the 3pt line. if you have a shooting partner its so much easier to practice together. Also not only fixed shots but you should practice dynamic moving shot with your mate as he pass the ball to you.

sorry for bad english

A few exercises I would recommend

5 spot shooting - making 10 shots from 5 spots, wing elbow, freethrow line, opposite elbow & wing. Once you get comfortable challenge yourself by completing the full things in (5mins). Progression can be 10 mids & 5 3's

4321 - (2mins) - make 4 shots from the wing, 3 shots from elbow, 2 shots from the freethrow line & 1 3pt shot from the top. After every shot you run to the half court & back. Good cardio & working on game shots from game spots as well.

Hope that was of value. Feel free to hit me up on IG @Coach_dee7 if you want any further help. Happy to help when I can. Keep getting better!!

i think shooting needs to be worked on outside of practice (and in the off season). They need to be shooting hundreds of shots a day and there isnt time in practice. Make homework to give to each player to do a certain number of makes of each kind of shot (static and driving), as well as dribbling and driving with the left hand.

I never understand this mentality outside of a college or prep school where kids can walk across campus and get in the gym. Shooting is like the most important thing in basketball, why not make it a priority in practice?

degoes1221 · 7 months ago

I understand both sides, to really make kids better it’s hard to get everyone the reps they need during practices when in season. Plus you have so much else to focus on. If it’s off season then by all means, but yeah kids will never be good shooters if you don’t give them time to practice

We started every practice with this…

3 ft in front of the rim, can only use one hand, gotta make 5 straight without hitting the rim. Then do the same at 6 ft. At 9 ft ball can hit the rim. Same for 12 ft. 15 ft is the free throw line, they can shoot normal free throw. After they make 5 straight free throws, they can shoot from anywhere.

I give them 15 minutes at the start of practice to finish this. The furthest they make it during the drill is the furthest they are allowed to shoot the rest of practice.

The one hand shooting really makes them develop proper form. I like that it adds a little pressure, especially once they make 4 in a row. And it keeps kids that have no business more than a foot outside the paint from thinking they’re Steph Curry.

Fortunately my gym had 8 goals so it was manageable. I understand most coaches don’t have this luxury.

4 upvotes on reddit
Proper_Beginning_248 · 7 months ago

don't you think that one hand shooting will ruin the smooth motion needed for shooting. If you teach to shoot with one hand it will make the one fluid motion a motion of two phases because they can only hold the ball with one hand. The whole section of catching the ball and pulling it up to the head is skipped which generates the power of a shot.

Still think that drill is very handy!

A lot of form shooting. Don't do them 1-handed. Start 6 feet out with both hands. Idk who invented one hand form shooting but they're off their rocker

It takes a long time to get better shooting. Won't happen overnight.

To me the best drills have 3 things: An opponent, cardio, and pressure.

King of The Court is by FAR my favorite. Its 1v1 but with rotating opponents. The only way to get on offense is to get a stop on defense.

Also these solo drills:

  1. "Arcade" Score as many points as you can in 2 mins while alternating lays (1pt), middy (2pts), 3ball (3pts). If you don't beat your previous score, do it again.

  2. "Rally" You're down by 10 pts. Each shot you make cuts into the lead. Each shot you miss extends the lead by one point. Play until you take the lead.

So I am working on my game, I am primarily a shooter and I lack finishing through contact and weak hand layups. My dribbling is not the best, so would be also good to improve.

What are some of the drills that you do (ideally by yourself) that have yield the best results for you? A reference to a video would also be great.

Would appreciate your input!

Casually dribble in place 5 times, letting the ball bounce up to your waist. Then dribble hard 5 times only letting the ball come up to your knees. Do this with both hands and then incorporate walking and jogging as you get more comfortable. You really want to control the ball and focus on “pushing” it down as opposed to letting it bounce back up to your hand

Whatever you do, do not try to memorize some combos. Get as good as you can at controlling the ball and let the defense dictate where you go with it.

I improved my shot percentage significantly by playing around the world by myself. Once i finished it fairly quickly i played it again but i couldent advance til next stage until i hit 3 in a row on each stage, then 5. Also i always forced myself to do a jump shot, not just shot from where im standing

Around the world by yourself from very close range, then take a step back and repeat, then take a step back and repeat etc is a very good and very fundamental shooting drill

Yeah, kept adding modifiers where ever i saw fit. Also mind your shooting form. My elbow would go to the side. Once i tilted my feet at about 45 degrees to my nondominant side and aligned elbow and forearm to face the basket, percentage went sky high

Start with a ball, knees bent, try not to look at the ball.

Dribble four times with your right/ then cross to your left/ then four times with you left/cross to your right and keep doing that for a minute.

Then repeat the same drill only this time three to the right/cross/ three to the left

Repeat again for two and one

Best basketball shooting drills

Key Considerations for Basketball Shooting Drills

  1. Shooting Form: Focus on drills that emphasize proper shooting mechanics, including stance, grip, and follow-through.

  2. Repetition: Choose drills that allow for high repetition to build muscle memory and confidence in your shot.

  3. Variety: Incorporate a mix of stationary and moving drills to simulate game situations and improve adaptability.

  4. Distance: Practice shooting from different distances (close range, mid-range, and three-point line) to develop a well-rounded shooting ability.

  5. Game Situations: Include drills that mimic game scenarios, such as shooting off the dribble or coming off screens.

Recommended Drills:

  1. Form Shooting: Start close to the basket and focus on your shooting form. Take 10-15 shots, concentrating on your mechanics before gradually moving back.

  2. Spot Shooting: Choose five spots around the key (baseline, wings, top of the key) and take a set number of shots (e.g., 5) from each spot. This helps with consistency and range.

  3. Catch and Shoot: Have a partner pass you the ball while you move to different spots on the floor. Focus on catching the ball in rhythm and shooting quickly.

  4. Free Throws: Practice free throws regularly to improve your shooting under pressure. Aim for a specific percentage (e.g., 80%) to track your progress.

  5. Dribble Pull-Up: Start at the three-point line, dribble toward the basket, and pull up for a jump shot. This simulates game situations where you need to create your own shot.

Takeaway: Consistency and practice are key to improving your shooting skills. Incorporate these drills into your training routine, and track your progress to see improvement over time.
