How to Get Better at Shooting 3-Pointers

TL;DR Start with basic form shooting, gradually increase range, and incorporate strength training and fatigue drills.

Form Shooting and Gradual Progression

Begin by practicing stationary shots close to the basket and gradually work your way out to the three-point line. This helps build muscle memory and ensures that your form remains consistent as you increase your range [1:2][2:5]. One-handed form shooting can also be beneficial for dialing in your arc and follow-through [1:3][4:2].

Strength and Conditioning

Improving your strength, particularly in your legs and core, is crucial for shooting three-pointers effectively [3:1][5:1]. Many players find that their form breaks down when they lack the strength to shoot comfortably from long distances [3:2]. Incorporating exercises like squats and cardio can help develop the necessary power and endurance [3:5].

Repetition and Consistency

Consistent practice is key to becoming a better shooter. Aim to make hundreds of shots each day, focusing on different types of three-pointers such as catch-and-shoot, off-the-dribble, and pull-up shots from various spots around the arc [4:1][4:3]. Reggie Miller famously made 700 shots before games, emphasizing the importance of repetition [4:4].

Shooting Under Fatigue

Practicing shooting while fatigued can simulate game conditions and improve your ability to maintain form under pressure [5:5][5:6]. Running sprints or suicides between shooting drills can help train your body to perform even when tired, ensuring your shot remains reliable during intense gameplay.

Technique Adjustments

Adjusting your shooting technique for three-pointers may be necessary. Lowering your release point and focusing on using your legs more than your arms can help generate the necessary power without compromising accuracy [3:2][5:8]. It's important to find a comfortable and repeatable form that works for you and stick with it through consistent practice [1:8].

Practice, practice and more practice. As cheesy as it sounds, it seems to be the most effective. Do some shooting drills, Heck even shooting around counts as practice.

First practice stationary shots until you are decent at it. Then practice shooting it by stepping into it. After that, you can start practicing shooting around screens. Don’t practice moving shots until you are adequate at shooting stationary.

It also helps to warm up to 3’s by shooting some shots from close first. Start inside and work your way outwards.

Pullup 3s off screens (use a chair or something), catch and shoot 3s (get someone to pass to you or catch off the bounce). Practice around the arc and you should be good.

Practice one hand form shooting. Start from under the basket and make your way to the 3 point line. Yes, you need to be able to shoot one hand 3 pointers to be a good 3 point shooter.

I do a drill every time I get the chance that really helps increase range. Obviously practice different types of looks, but for locking in your form and increasing range I do this:

I start at the closest box on the paint and shoot one handed until I get X number of makes. Then the next box up, then again until I’m shooting free throws. Then roughly 17-18 footers, the. HS threes, the. NCAA threes etc. next you do the same thing, but you shoot a stand still shot. (Both hands but no jumping).

Then, of course, you do the whole process with the jump shot.

Obviously shooting threes one-handed is silly to force yourself to get the X makes. So I stop at any point when I miss 3 in a row on the one handed shots passed the FT line. But with set shots, it really helps your range to get all of the makes. Obviously the X makes is something that can increase from 2-3 makes to 3-5 makes, 10 makes, 3 in a row, 3 ‘swishes’ in a row etc.

TL;Dr find some way of practicing your shot really close. Until you can get really consistent results and you feel like you have total control over making e ball go in. Then slowly move further away while maintaining the same shooting form.

This might be a dumb question, but how do you get better at shooting from 3? Right now I can’t really score any at school(pickup) or in games(which my parents won’t let me play in Bc of COVID) :( I’ve been doing form shooting every day. Any help, drills, anything would be appreciated.

Form shooting, i use to sit there and shoot hundreds of free throws in a row, once you can pretty much make all of them keep taking steps back until you get comfortable with shooting from there aswell, you can also do this from the wing and corner, just make sure you're free throw range, shit takes a long time bro, but it works.

First and foremost, you need really good cardio and be strong enough to shoot comfortably.

But technique wise, a two part shot mid is reasonable to turn into a more push shot once you go to 3. Be conscious of your release point, you might release high on mid, but lower it a bit to make the push 1 motion shot more conducive. This ofc ties into your strength: it’s hard to shoot 3s so lowering ur shot form makes more forward velocity and less height.

And of course fingers in the cookie jar follow through

Try lowering your release point, you can’t shoot 3s the same way you shoot a mid range due to the distance

Practice. I shoot 50 threes from each spot on the three point line. I shoot about 300 makes a day

To the people saying do this to your shot is wrong. There is no perfect basketball form. It’s all about follow thru tho . When you release your shot make sure your elbows are at full extend then You build muscle memory

Practice all kinds of 3’s. Catch and shoot, off the dribble, pull up and from the major spots - corners, top of the key and wings.

No way around it, just tons and tons of proper repetition. Make sure your form still holds together well from distance.

Yes this. Also I'd say stand right in front of the basket n shoot 1 handed right over the rim and try to swish it. This helps dial in your arc, form, follow through, and helps shoot straight.

I'd have a habit when I got tired to use my thumb for extra push when shooting further out. This helped me knock out that habit and have a smoother release.

Also, as you make them step further out until you get to the 3 and then move around the 3pt line

How old are you? Most younger guys just aren't strong enough yet to shoot threes and just completely mess up their mechanics trying to get there. If you have to mess up your form to get enough "oomph" on the ball to make a three (squatting like a toad, two handing it, etc) you just shouldn't worry about shooting 3s . Heck I was in my mid teens before I could shoot 3s without shooting it like a girl lol.

(Side note playing by 1s and 2s is the dumbest thing to happen to pickup ball haha)

3 upvotes on reddit
That_Toe8574 · 3 months ago

Great point. I learned jacking up 3s at a young age playing pickup with older guys. My jumper became a set shot with a low release because of how hard I had to shove the ball as a kid. I practiced a ton and was a sniper, but needed to be OPEN as my shot was easy to contest or I'd have to heave rainbows.

Better off practicing proper form with a high release and getting lethal from 18 feet and move out as you get stronger, if OP is indeed a young buck.

Train how to shoot when you're tired. The way I would do it back then was to do suicides every time I miss two in a row.

The shots will get tougher, and tougher, but that's the point.

One thing people take for granted is that during actual games, you will likely exert more energy than how you usually do in training. You need to train with in-game speed, if possible.

That being said, shooting is technique first, and muscle memory helps you to follow through that. So, get your techniques right, and then shoot plenty.

10 upvotes on reddit

Keep the work in. The results will come through. Remember to sleep, and rest properly too. Resting is part of training. You'll do good as long as you have the curiosity to the game.

Sit in your shot, you’re not getting enough leg power. you could also be leaning forward when sitting in your shot which sends your power horizontally rather than vertical, this leads to hitting the front of the rim typically.

Nice. I've been there - gotta just make the 3 respectable enough to get them to come out and guard you and open up the rest of your game.

For me the answer was I had to just get a little stronger, but I was a freaking long lanky twig with no muscle. That's the answer for a lot of people coming up short on 3s and nobody wants to hear it haha. YMMV, that's just one possibility.

What I did to get a stronger shot workout wise were pushups, tricep extensions, and squats.

Don't forget to also check your mechanics wether the sequence of your shot is correct, study Luka's form as it perfectly demonstrates the sequencing in slow motion. Also work on form shooting within the midrange, and when you get your mechanics down just go out to the 3.

And lastly is to practice your three ball, you can't get better results if you dont practice your three ball.

The biggest thing that helped me with this is shooting without jumping from as far as possible. Keep your regular form, use your legs, and notice when your form is going bad or you’re just chucking with arms. Maybe start a step back from the FT line. In a few months, or whenever those are feeling too easy, take another step back. I’m currently about a foot back of the three point line, working to get range.

Build your range, you need to be a shooter first then a 3P shooter. The Ray Allen drill is good for that. Essentially you keep trying to shoot from the middle of the basket and move backwards until you miss.

You start very close to the basket with one hand, only your shooting motion. You make three in a row and move a step back. If you miss 3 in a row that’s your range. You reset from close to the basket adding your left hand but without jumping. Make theee in a row and take a step back until your range. Then reset and do the full jumping form, including jump.

Then after that you can keep doing jump shots within that range if you want but this should take you a good 15-20 min.

PineappleKind1048 · 4 months ago

I was going to say this. The best shooters have great touch around the rim. This helped me improve my shot so much. I would just like to add doing a standing shot on the opposite leg of your dominant hand with your regular form. If you can’t make it from 3 consistently then you need to gain strength. Doing this expanded my range to making almost half court shots consistently. Good luck!

You look like you’re doing all the stages of shooting one at a time instead of in one motion. Needs to be more fluid. Probably good in the mid range because you can aim enough to make up for poor mechanics. The longer the shot, the more deviation will play a role.

Which means, start with the basics. Once you get everything fluid, the three ball is just about practice.

Basically one motion shot is when you bring the ball up to your set point and shoot in one fluid movement. 2 motion would be when you bring the ball to your set point as you are jumping up and hold it there until you reach the peak of your jump.

Examples of 1 motion shot: stephen curry, paul george 2motion shot: kobe bryant, lebron james

start at a range where you can hit 3 in a row. Back out a few steps. Keep shooting. If you miss 3 in a row step forward. If you make 3 in a row backup a few steps.

Increase to 5 when you are ready, then more.

There is no fast way to get good at shooting. From an elapsed time point of view you can get better at shooting by practicing hours/day and making hundreds of shots per day. And I mean making, not taking.

First step: get out of this “shortest time possible” mindset. Are you in a rush because you have tryouts or are starting a league soon? Not worth it. You can always get into those later at some point. Creating a rushed form and biomechanics is not gonna be worth it.

So you have 4 months. Thats actually a good amount of time.

All you need to do is practice. At a minimum you need to make 200 shots a day. I’d highly recommend buying and reading a book to learn drills.

Be like Kobe, practice 2 - 4 times a day at least making 200 shots each practice. That’s how you become a better shooter in the shortest amount of time.

I did, and still try to do 100 free throw makes and 100 3pt makes every day (makes not attempts) 20 from each spot

Even if weather is bad i still go and do it. Unless its literally winter with blizzard

First it took me 3 hours to so this, then 2,5 then 2, now it takes between 1 and 1,5 because accuracy improved. I even consider upping the goal to 150, but i dont have much time on my hands so im satisfied with 1,5 hours

Also if theres a rebounder to help me (my brother often does) it reduces the time spent 3x

Just dont rush it, try to shoot every shot focused and proper form. Also it gets harder near the end because of fatigue but training shooting during fatigue is best, as you will shoot fatigued during the actual game

This indeed works, but its long term training like every other skill, there are no shortcuts my friend

Its about acceleration. The ball has to accelerate to a certain speed in the small amount of time you are shooting it. It’s not about strength its about quickness. Jump less, shoot faster, and make sure your guide hand isn’t dragging on the ball either. Good luck.

13 upvotes on reddit
lilgoat0104 · OP · 6 years ago

So I can generate more power if I shoot faster ? And how can I shoot faster ?

4 upvotes on reddit
S
stilloriginal · 6 years ago

I prefer to think of it in terms of force rather than power, because it’s easier to reason through. Force is mass x acceleration. The mass of a basketball remains constant so there is only one thing you can change in order to apply more force, and that is acceleration.

As an exercise, start with the ball at your set point, and very quickly bend your knees and ankles down and up and let it rip. Don’t bend your knees deep - that takes longer so is slower. Just slightly bend your knees quickly, and springy like at the ankles, and shoot it. The key is to be bouncy not take a leap. Don’t even leave the ground, just get a little bounce.

Once you have a feel for the timing and distance you can work on imcorporating that into your shot. But mostly the trick is to jump less and have the ball at your set point early. And to really shoot it quick (your arm). And make sure your guide hand isn’t in the way, pull your guide hand off earlier just to check. And get the bounce from your feet not your knees.

This is all just one dudes .02

It's more about form and efficient transfer of energy than muscle strength. You probably need to get under the ball a bit more and use your legs more efficiently.

Lots of ways, most importantly releasing the ball at the part of your jump with the most momentum. Also make sure you really bend your knees. If it helps, try to shoot just balancing on your toes.

Shooting the 3 ball takes time. You need to build your leg strength. However ask yourself how good is your mid range? Can you consistently know down 18footers? Can you make free throws consistently? Shooting the 3 ball will come, but you have to work on the mid range first.

How to get better at 3-pointers

Key Considerations for Improving Your 3-Point Shooting:

  1. Proper Shooting Form:

    • Focus on your stance: feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent.
    • Keep your shooting elbow aligned with the basket.
    • Use your legs for power and follow through with your wrist.
  2. Repetition and Consistency:

    • Practice shooting regularly to build muscle memory.
    • Start close to the basket and gradually move back as you become more comfortable.
  3. Footwork:

    • Work on your footwork to ensure you can get into your shooting position quickly.
    • Practice catching and shooting in one smooth motion.
  4. Shooting Drills:

    • Incorporate drills like "Spot Shooting" (shooting from designated spots) and "Game Shots" (shooting off the dribble or after a pass).
    • Use a shooting machine or rebounder to maximize practice efficiency.
  5. Mental Focus:

    • Visualize successful shots before taking them.
    • Stay calm and confident during games; pressure can affect shooting performance.
  6. Analyze Your Shots:

    • Record your shooting sessions to analyze your form and identify areas for improvement.
    • Seek feedback from coaches or experienced players.

Recommendation: Consider using a shooting aid, like a shooting sleeve or a shooting coach app, to help track your progress and provide feedback. Consistent practice, combined with a focus on form and technique, will lead to improvement over time. Aim for at least 100 shots per practice session to build confidence and skill.
