TL;DR
2M Smokehouse
2M Smokehouse consistently emerges as a top recommendation for BBQ in San Antonio across multiple discussions. It is praised for its brisket, although some find it too rich or fatty [4:3]. The venue has received accolades such as being listed in Texas Monthly's Top 25 New BBQ Joints
[4:1]. Despite occasional mixed reviews about the sauce and sides
[4:5], it remains a favorite among locals and visitors alike
[5:1]
[5:3].
Reese Bros BBQ
Reese Bros BBQ is another strong contender, recognized for its fantastic food, atmosphere, and service. It's noted as one of the newer establishments making waves in the local BBQ scene [4:1]. Reese Bros is often recommended alongside 2M Smokehouse as a must-try option
[5:4].
Smoke Shack
Smoke Shack receives mixed reviews but is still frequently mentioned as a popular spot. Some patrons enjoy their brisket and mac and cheese [2:4], while others criticize the sweetness of their dishes
[3:8]. Its proximity to downtown makes it a convenient choice for visitors
[1:2].
BBQ Station
BBQ Station is described as an old-school BBQ joint with great brisket and sausage, complemented by sides like jalapeño mac and cheese [2:5]. While not as frequently mentioned as 2M Smokehouse, it has a loyal following that appreciates its traditional offerings
[2:6].
Other Recommendations
Pinkerton's BBQ is another option, especially if you're near downtown [2:2]. It's praised for community engagement and special events
[2:1]. South BBQ is also recommended for its brisket, chicken, ribs, and tater tots casserole
[2:3].
When visiting San Antonio, these BBQ spots offer a range of flavors and experiences that cater to different preferences, ensuring you'll find something to satisfy your BBQ cravings.
I’m coming to San Antonio for a few days next month and would like to have some good TX BBQ. I know Austin is more known for their BBQ (I think I’m supposed to say “Fuck Austin” here), but I’m sure you have great BBQ as well. I searched the sidebar and didn’t see it, but if I missed a guide I’m sorry and please link it.
Appreciate all your help!
Not entirely sure why people would downvote this.
Smoke Shack is my favorite BBQ spot. You’ll likely be near it as it’s very close to downtown.
Is it really that good? Imo the brisket was dry and food was overpriced. I've heard one or two people say positive things so I'm wondering if it was just a bad experience.
South bbq and kitchen is pretty good
It’s 2M and not really close in my opinion. Two Bros was top notch a few years ago but seems to have fallen off.
For the life of me, I will never understand why people recommend Smoke Shack. I’ve had better at Rudy’s
2m for sure then B&B smokehouse.
Unfortunately I don’t think we’ll be around when 2M is open :(
Big bib is great
Hello. Coming to SA for a conference in a few weeks and looking for reccomendations on a BBQ place. I don’t care about ambience or presentation, just want the best food.
Thank you!!
The consensus is 2M Smokehouse is the best.
If you're downtown though, Pinkerton's is a good option.
I'm also partial to BBQ Station which never makes these lists. Good old school BBQ.
BBQ Station is what's up! I often forget how good it is until we go. I was just there this past Saturday and I'm still thinking about the jalapeno mac and cheese. The BBQ is great as well, I'm particularly fond of their brisket and sausage.
No one ever mentions BBQ Station- and that’s fine because it’s phenomenal, been here for decades and that means the lines will still be short when I arrive.
BBQ Station’s moist brisket can only be described as melt-in-your-mouth beef. It’s so good. Pair it with jalapeño macncheese and some pork ribs. Forget the sauce, not needed here.
Shhhhh don’t give the secret away! Also the owners are fantastic people.
I was about to say the same. 2M is the go to, treat story behind the go BBQ in San Antonio. Pinkerton's is great if you are in the downtown area, they also do special events. Last year they did a bunch of brisket stuffed roasted pigs for memorial day for free, brought in live music. When a place does stuff like that for its community, I can't but help support them when I can.
South BBQ get the brisket, chicken, ribs and some tator tots casserole. Near the river too and south of downtown.
Smoke Shack has great brisket and mac
Big Bib has amazing sweet potato casserole
DONT GO TO BILL MILLERS
I was talking to someone the other day who had made a trip to San Antonio last year. I asked if they got some ‘q’, and they’re response was: “I ate at Bill Millers.”
All I could do was laugh. You poor, poor bastard.
Two Brothers
2 bruh
I’m visiting some family just outside SA in the next few weeks. I’m a fat dude from Maine who wants some legit BBQ, but know from living in a tourist town, that the best places to eat are never ever the ones that pop up in a google search, or yelp, or whatever else people use. I was just hoping for some recommendations for the better BBQ places that the local crowds enjoy that may not show up on the front page of my wife’s last bing search. Thanks for any suggestions input!
Big Bib, BBQ Station, although I always take visitors to Smoke Shack
Burnt Bean in Seguin. Right outside San Antonio
Texas Pride. Can't go wrong y'all
Really good BBQ!
If you want to stay in town, recommend 2M or The Barbecue station.
If you want to go for a drive, check out Smitty's in Lockhart!
In San Antonio I would say 2M, Reese bros, South BBQ and smoke shack.
This is the correct answer. First 2 are the best offerings. The earlier you go for lunch, the better chance the brisket wont be sold out
In town, these are my picks with 2M being tops
Can confirm! I also think 2M is the best BBQ I’ve ever tasted.
I have to strongly disagree on Smoke Shack. God everything is so sugary, even the fries. I got some ribs and they were so caked overly sweet sauce it tasted like they cooked them in melted Jolly Ranchers.
I also strongly disagree on Smoke Shack, and I've been there so many times to count. It's awful every time.
2M the best
Okay so I’ve been in the area since 2015 and have to admit I’ve been to some really great places to eat. I’m looked for options and opinions! Who’s go the BEST I mean “can’t miss out on “. BBQ in SA?
I'm still searching also. I have hit Rudy's a couple of times and it's OK but the ribs are consistently UNDER cooked. Lots of people mention The BBQ Station. I simply don't understand this one. The staff was unfriendly and they do NOT serve moist (fatty) brisket. Sides are very average. My next places will be The Smoke Shack and the 2M. Each one are highly recommended.
2M Smokehouse
I enjoyed the brisket at 2M but my SO found it to be too rich and fatty.
Their BBQ sauce is just ok. Not my preferred style. I also wish they had potato salad lol.
I was super disappointed when I went there. It has a nice vibe, maybe I went on a off day for them. I felt I wasted my money.
overrated imo
Blacks or Pinkerton
Pinkertons
Lots of great options in SA. Reese Bros BBQ are the new kids on the block and they are killing it. Recently made Texas Monthly Top 25 New BBQ Joints. Family run business and absolutely fantastic food, atmosphere, service, etc. Can’t recommend enough!
South BBQ
2m Smokehouse is the best in town.
Second this.
Reese Bros is the truth. 2M is also very good. Can’t go wrong with either!
What I was going to say as well!
Pinkertons is also excellent
2M is hands down the best BBQ in SA
Hi, I’m visiting SAT for the first time ever, I’m going for a Spurs game, but I would like to know if there is any BBQ that I MUST visit. Thank you for your tips.
2M . Nectar of the gods
Agree on 2M. Burnt Bean if you're willing to go to Seguin.
Pinkertons and it’s not even close.
Pinkertons always gets a ton of downvotes on bbq posts because it’s “touristy” and overrated, but it’s actually really good food. And the location can’t be beat.
South bbq is excellent
BBQ life by Chris is my favorite
2m is pretty solid but kinda overhyped
South BBQ is slept on it’s so good
BBQ life by Chris is a very good choice.
2m. Reese brothers and south bbq
I lived in SA for a year now and never tried this place. Does it usually have a line on a Saturday morning? If so, what’s the best time to arrive?
With the weather being nice you do run the risk of it being more crowded. I haven’t heard of them selling out early though if that helps. I think even if you got there when they open it shouldn’t be more than 30 minutes. The food comes out pretty fast also after ordering
I think I’m gonna try Reese brothers, 2M will be closed for the weekend
Gone to 2M a few times and they’re freaking delicious! I would go every day if I had unlimited money! But this reason is the only reason you need to go!
I’m headed to San Antonio next week for a conference. Are there any “must have” bbq joints to try?
2M on the east side, Burnt Bean out in Seguin 30-40mins
Burnt Bean 100% made a trip out there recently and got damn some of the best bbq I have ever had.
just hit up burnt bean last month...absolutely stunning. the brisket is perfection. pork ribs were overdone (meat falling off the bone) but the flavor was excellent.
2M for sure, but get there early because they run out
Reese Bros BBQ
Two made the Texas Monthly Top 50, 2M Smokehouse and Pinkerton’s Barbecue. Texas Monthly Top 50 Best BBQ Joints (2021)
They also have a BBQ Finder App.
Pinkerton’s is in San Antonio?
Yea DT by the new frost tower. It’s good.
What part of San Antonio? I can give you somewhere about 10 minutes away if you tell me the general area. What you really don't want to miss out on are the breakfast tacos.
this. I visited last week for the first time
chicharon con Chile 👌👌
2M. 2M is all you need in life.
I am a long term NYC resident and I will be traveling to San Antonio in April this year and will spend the entire month of April there. I want to know what are the best Texas BBQ places in San Antonio for me to check out during my visit? Thank you so much in advance!!!
Also I’ll be traveling there alone so if anyone wants to accompany me to places in San Antonio/nearby I’ll be happy too! Just leave a comment or PM me and we can get to know each other before meeting.
Edit:
I also want to note that I do not drive, I reply on public transportation.
Edit 2: Been reading the comments. Looks like 2M, Pinkerton, and Reese Bros are must-goes haha I’ll be sure to check them out. A month is a long period so I’ll def try out a few more based on the comment section. Really helpful y’all!
South BBQ or 2M in San Antonio. Burnt Bean if you’re willing to take a short drive(45min-ish) to Sequin TX
Seconding South. I believe its the same BBQ that Curry Boys uses in their dishes.
South is the best IMO. I always order online so I have no issue with waiting in line.
Just went there yesterday. It was pretty good. Brisket and Mac were both lukewarm. Had to go back and ask for silverware and BBQ sauce. Service was definitely lacking which is odd for Texas BBQ. I'll try again but Pinkerton's was better imo.
2M had the best BBQ imo but their sides are… bare minimum
This is it OP. 2M Smokehouse has been recognized across the state and country for being one of the best BBQ places. They were a James Beard nominee in 2022. Go there.
Can confirm. 2M is the best in San Antonio city limits.
If you travel outside town to New Braunfels (30ish min drive) there’s some other great options. My favorite is Black’s BBQ.
You’re getting all the best recommendations elsewhere. If you want to try a fusion spot, Curry Brothers BBQ on St Mary’s street used SE Asian infused flavors (like curry) in their cooks. Not the best in town, but one of the most unique.
Plus you can’t go wrong hanging out on the St Mary’s Strip.
I just discovered curry boys yesterday. They changed my mind on curry. It's amazing! Sweet and spicy and perfect.
Top tier list fam. I'd throw BBQ Station in the mix as well.
Y'all don't have to go (and make the lines longer), but they belong on the list too.
2M, Pinkertons, Reese bros., Smoke Shack, 2bros.
Reeses Bros. is the best that is close to downtown.
Ok folks I’m a Texan so I guess it’s my god given right to give my opinion on BBQ. Never been to Pinkerton’s before but always heard it was one of the best in the 210.
Cold sides: Coleslaw was 8/10. I’ve had better, but not by much. Worth having on the tray! Potato Salad: 10/10 some of the best I’ve ever had. I will be ordering a quart next time.
Hot Sides: beans: 9/10. They were absolutely delicious. Bacon Mac n Cheese: 7/10. Pretty damn good, but could have been a bit creamier in my opinion. I ate every last bite.
Blueberry cobbler: 6/10 pretty good nothing special
Brisket: 6/10. Great crust, but our batch was a bit dry :/ Pulled Pork: 7/10 pretty standard for a bbq joint here in TX Glazed Pork Ribs: 9/10. I would eat these sweet delectables every single day Smoked Sausage: 10/10. Biased because it’s always my favorite part, but GATDAYUM this was amazing.
All in all: worth the wait in line
Looks like the bomb. I’ve been to SA probably half a dozen times in the last year and still haven’t gone to Pinkerton’s. Tried a lot of others but next time I go I’ll have to stop in.
It’s pretty good for a pit restaurant. Not necessarily as good as I could make at home, and not as good as Terry Blacks, but definitely worth a trip!!
I’d go back for the brisket again. Some of my favorite in Houston. Maybe was an off day
The best thing that I tasted out of Terry Black’s was their sauces. Very disappointed
Gotta love Pinkerton’s!
Pinkertons......... - Arthur Morgan
beat me to the bush cause I was bouta say Red Dead lol
hahaha instantly popped in my head
😂🤣😂🤣
Looks like shit. How much was that wonder bread?
If you’re still in SATX try to hit up 2Ms. One of my favorite spots ever. Equally Seguin is only about 30m away and has Burnt Bean which topped the Texas monthly list and is, by a long shot, the best bbq I’ve had

Theory Coffee
What's Brewing
Indy Coffee
4:13 coffee truck on potranco, Cajun coffee shack on potranco, and there's a new coffee truck on 90 E and Montgomery Rd but idk the name of it and haven't tried it yet.
Coffee + Culture is pricey but good.
Best coffee and most consistent is Golds hands down
Whole list is invalidated because of the way OP opened the burger section.
Can the mods please ban OP? Do we need a vote, how does it work?
This but I like both, this whole list is eh. The suggestions here are definitely not all reliable lol. Not that some of these places are horrible but there’s so many better options. But honestly, the thing is, if you can’t find new/good places to eat in San Antonio, you may need to check your pulse. There are so many good restaurants, even a top 10 of each type would barely scratch the surface. Google reviews is my go to anyway. If it can’t earn at least 4 stars, I ain’t goin. Most good places are near 5 and there are many.
I am open to suggestions :)
Simis on fredericksburg is awesome indian food! They have a lunch buffet and great lunch menu. Close midday after lunch to prep for dinner so check the hours
Spice, Fredericksburg and 410
Nope, means Indian (Asian).
For Indian my list would be:
Spicy and unique food- Spicy matka
South Indian food - Madurai Mes
Chaat/street food - Chattar Pattar and RJ food truck
Multiple categories: Biryani Pot
