TL;DR
Shiro
Shiro is frequently mentioned as one of the best sushi spots in San Antonio. It is noted for its high-quality sushi and unique offerings, though it comes at a higher price point [2:4],
[4:1]. Shiro is recommended for those looking for top-tier sushi and are willing to pay a premium for it.
Nikki's Tokyo Inn
For a more traditional Japanese dining experience, Nikki's Tokyo Inn is highly recommended. It's been owned by the same Japanese family for 60 years, offering a unique atmosphere where diners sit on the floor with shoes off [2:3],
[4:6]. While opinions vary on the sushi itself, many appreciate the authenticity and overall dining experience
[2:7].
Koi Kawa
Koi Kawa is another favorite among locals, praised for its authentic sushi and beautiful view of the river [3:3]. Despite ups and downs over the years, it remains a beloved spot for many, offering good prices and a pleasant atmosphere
[2:5].
Other Notable Mentions
These recommendations provide a range of options depending on your preference for traditional or modern sushi experiences, budget considerations, and desired ambiance.
My favorite is Yellowfish off Wurzbach. I really like the Japanese/Mexican fusion vibe they have going on, makes for some unique flavors.
I opened a sushi burrito place back home with tacos/ceviche/sushi etc. thanks for the advice!
Shiro down by the Pearl
Check out Unik’Ko at the rim/la cantera. Two kings roll is awesome.
I’m actually a sushi chef, but I only teach ppl how to make it at home. I’m so over it but the girls I’m with are “dying” for some sushi. I’d rather eat some tacos 😂
Oh shoot dude. Well in that case sushi is not great in San Antonio then. Godai on west avenue is another one that a lot of people love. I think they go too heavy on their fats (eg mayo).
Besides that, yummi sushi is good, and sushi zushi is a place that now has 3-4 locations. It’s ok, but has gone downhill since it opened 20ish years ago.
Also: thanks for the breakfast taco recommendations the other day. We’re here for a week from Alabama and are enjoying your city!
Roll Tide I hope! What part? My husband is from Birmingham!
RMFTR. We’re from Birmingham (Trussville) check out my website www.Birminghamsushiclasses.com or Instagram @sushiclasses
I know SA isn't known for its sushi, but I have been craving! Where is the best place to get the best, fresh tasting sushi?
My wife and I’s favorite is Sushihana off northwest military! Favorite out of any place I’ve had (including Nikki’s, but I have not tried Shiros yet).
Seconded! The rice combination there is AMAZING!!
Nikki's Tokyo Inn is by far the best sushi in the City. Amazing traditional Japanese food including fresh sushi. Owned by the same Japanese family for 60 years. Most seating is take off your shoes and sit on the floor. Great experience. You will love it.
Nikis has absolutely garbage sushi. Fantastic other food but their sushi is trash.
You are absolutely wrong but thats quite alright. I have lived in Asia as well as San Francisco so I know my sushi. Nikis is spot on. :)
Do they happen to have onigiri? That’s the one Japanese dish I haven’t properly found in San Antonio that I miss the most.
Shiro is easily the best in town, but it's pricey.
I also like Nikki's Tokyo Inn for a more traditional vibe, but Shiro is the best.
Nikki's is good but has the service gotten better?
I used to take my wife there like 10 years ago but the service could be rough. Wait 20 minutes to get seen for a water refill, brusque waitstaff, and stuff like that.
Nikki’s and I personally like Koi Kawa too.
We love Koi Kawa. So many ups and downs over the years. I’ve been going there 20 years. When it’s on its “up”, it’s awesome. Always good prices too.
Koi Kawa is amazing
Sure if you love a mountain of capers on your rolls… so random.
Where are the best sushi spots? Any all you can eat?
Well, for whenever the apocalypse ends.
nikis tokyo inn
Seconding this along with Yummi Sushi on Blanco.
Niki’s for more authentic, Yummi for more specialty rolls.
Koi kawa - best sushi hands down. My friend took over the restaurant over 4 years ago. Never had a bad experience there. The restaurant also has a great view of the river. It’s tucked away in a corner of a small plaza off of broadway near incarnate ward
I haven't tried some of the other places mentioned, but this is my go-to for the past few years, they are always nice, the indoors atmosphere is great and the view is magic. There hasn't been anything that was disappointing, though I've traveled a lot in the US and have had mind-blowing sushi in other cities that this place doesn't quite come close to. Nothing in town has made as nice sushi memories though!
Awwww yay I’m so glad!! My friend Danny use to work at all the top sushi places listed in this sub and finally took over this restaurant. He’s a great guy and going through a lot so anytime I support I try to. I’ve also traveled all over too and Koi kawa has always been on top of my list hands down
Sushihana
I work at a local Sushi Chain here in town. My professional opinion on the best sushi spot in San Antonio is going to be Sushihana on NW Military. They have alot of traditional stuff and a great hot side kitchen as well. They have a great selection of fresh fish with items I have a hard time finding at other sushi spots. Also got to shout out to Sushi Zushi if you aren't a sushi snob, it's good and they have a more Americanized menu if you're looking for stuff like that.
A buddy of mine works there. Their fish is very fresh and super high quality.
Godai on West Ave.
I wouldn’t say the best but top 5 is Osaka, they have the BEST lunch special and happy hour every day which is 3 rolls for $22.
Godai on West Ave. Lot of passion for sushi from the owner and it shows.
Haven’t been to many sushi places here, but Godai met my standards and had some very creative rolls. Also great ambiance for a date (had success).
Success?? As innnn?
My favorite was Fujiya off Wurzbach but it closed.
Nikki's Tokyo Inn, hands down. go and be amazed. locally run by Japanese family for 60 years. Sit down on floor with shoes off and hope Pat is your waiter, he is the best and son of the owner. Their food in general is not only authentic but delicious. Definitely make a reservation because they would like you better for it.
I’ve been trying to find this place for years!!!! I went once in college and then couldn’t find it after. It’s such a hole in the wall. The best curry I’ve ever had there too!!
Thank you a million times for posting this you’re a God!!!
Woohoo awesome! So glad I could help you. It is a great place. Enjoy some Sushi for me!
The food was good and genuine but the restaurant itself is showing some serious age. It's pretty beat up but you can tell it started out really nice.
that is the BEST part of the entire place and experience IMO. I would never think to go back if the place looked fancy. its the home like atmosphere that really draws me back every single time. I wouldn't have it any other way. I hope they never fix it up other than safety issues
Shiro is the best, hands down. Have love for a lot of these places mentioned.. But there's really nothing like Shiro in San Antonio. A bit on the expensive side though.
Godai on West Ave
We’ve been there already, it was really good 👍🏽
Uniko at the eilan!!!
H‑E‑B
All of the Japanese people I use to work with love Koi Kawa. (I think that's how it's spelled). Super authentic and be prepared to spend $100/person.
Just looking for a place not crazy expensive but nice enough to satisfy my sushi cravings. Thanks!
I tried HEB and Central Market sushi, they’re fine but the rice is quite lacking IMO
Wasabi is always on point.
Also, might I suggest buying a sushi roller and learning to make your own? It seems daunting but it’s actually really easy and SO delicious when you can add whatever you want! IMO, sushi is the only thing that can taste the same in restaurants and at home.
Sorry for the late reply… I actually love making sushi and I do many times at home. But since I’m in SA just for a month I’m not feeling like getting all the supplies and all that
Shiro is the best sushi in town
Thanks!
Sushi Zushi
I’ll take a look, thanks!
Sushi 7…thank me later. 😃
I will!
Wasabi is pretty good and (used to, maybe still do) give free ginger salad and miso. I love the warm intimacy of the place.
Sushi shima on blanco/1604 has the best happy hour and afternoon prices!
Thanks! Will look into it!
Shiro Japanese Bistro but it’s PRICY. Wife and I went last month and it was $200 with only one drink each.
Goro for omakase. I think he only does it on weeknights.
Shiro is really really good. Lots of different types of super fresh nigiri/sashimi and the rolls are also well balanced.
Nikki’s is a classic for a reason.
Nikki's Tokyo Inn on Hildebrand. Owned by the same Japanese family for 60 years. You take off your shoes and sit on the floor. The sushi is authentic and absolutely amazing. Great atmosphere and service too!
the sushi restaurant version of Cheers
Do you have to pay extra for that private room?
No. just make reservations a couple of days ahead because it books up quick. They have more than one room, there is a general wide open seating area that is for sit on the floor style!
I like koi kawa
Goros
Ok Austin, Goya needs more love! How is no one talking about this place?! Super cozy sushi spot up on the north side on 183 and Lake Creek Parkway. I've been periodically eating here (dine in, take out, AND Door Dash) ever since they opened and always had great experiences! Great customer service and consistently delicious food....and if you dine in, you'll get treated to some really lovely food presentation (I even got an orchid in my bowl today!)
Went there again tonight for their salmon don (salmon sashimi over sushi rice with veggies) and it had the perfect ratio of ingredients. It came with a side salad with ginger dressing and miso soup to make a very satisfying meal.
They also serve amazing Japanese curry (included a picture from a previous visit a few months ago), tons of sushi (Godzilla roll pictured), and bento boxes (think this was the beef bulgolgi one!). This restaurant has always been very slow whenever I've gone, which boggles my mind because I'd totally eat there every week if I lived closer! Y'all are really missing out if you don't give them a try.
I’ve only had Japanese curry a few times but it is delightful. I’ve added Goya to my list of places to try!
I've been here a few times. I live in the area, and I think it's decent. I have a special place in my heart for these super cozy strip center places, it's a special vibe to knock off work and hang out in these places after. I usually end up at Osaka Mansun if I want to go someplace nearby, but I go here when I want something a little bit nicer on the interior. I also haven't been since probably before covid, so they might have new chef
None of their dishes stuck out for me, but I haven't tried a lot of the ones you mentioned. I do remember their edamame being better than other restaurants around though
Lol We're opposites! I don't think I've been to Osaka Mansun since before COVID, but sounds like maybe I should give them another try.
I think Goya has definitely improved over time, but then again, I've liked them from the start. I usually just alternate between the salmon don and their chirashi bowl, but decided to be different and tried their Japanese curry a few months ago (why does it never taste that good when I make it at home?!) and I've tried a handful of different sushi rolls over the years too.
I'll probably just stick to rolls at Osaka since it doesn't look like they have chirashi on the menu. 🥲
Yeah I like the rolls a bit better at Osaka. The hot foods are fine, but I don’t know of any dishes that are standout amazing. But it’s a nice vibe and reasonably priced.
There’s also another sushi place, cannot remember the name, near the golds gym on Anderson mill/183. Also decent, very good/cheap lunch special there. But food also nothing to write home about.
When I want next level stuff I usually drive further to Soto, tomadachi, or daichi in cedar park is also quite good
Goya is a gem
Where can I get a large amount of sushi at an affordable price? I'm having a baby in early October and I've been waiting 9 months for my sushi but idk a restaurant I should go to
GOROS SUSHI!! BEST SUSHI IN SA AND A LOT FOR YOUR BUCK TRUST ME ON THIS
I second this, best sushi for sure!
Osaka has the BEST sushi happy hour EVERYDAY! I think the price might have gone up a little but here it is.
I like to try new places but I always end up back at osaka
I def agree! I really like their lunch specials too!
Umiya has all you can eat sushi including appetizers, desserts, hibachi, teriyaki, etc. for $30.95 per person. It’s amazing and delicious 🤤
Umiya is literally so amazing, I can't believe it. The quality is outstanding, it's crazy. If they doubled their price I would still go.
Ooo I keep seeing this restaurant, I can’t wait to try it now!
I always go to Yummi off of Bitters and 281, it’s delicious and a hole in the wall.
Just wondering your thoughts.
I like Umiya, it isn't a buffet but it is all you can eat and you order from the menu and they bring the food out to you fresh. They have different stuff for lunch and dinner. Lots of sushi, but they have stir fry, noodles, fried rice, and plenty of other yummy asian foods.
No. Kumi on 281 has more hot food and ramen for the same price. My husband lives sushi, I require a hot meal. This serves up both. Also, ice cream.
Yes. If you love sushi, this is one of the best spots in town, hands down.
Love, love, love Umiya. I’m there at least twice a month. Half off cocktails on Mondays. The baked mussels are amazing. Love the udon steak noodles. And I always leave room for some green tea ice cream at the end.
It's like 22 bucks right? Is it worth it?
For lunch it's $22 and for dinner I think it's around $30. I prefer it for dinner as I pile up on the expensive stuff, the sashimi, steak, salmon, seafood, etc. I think it is worth it if you can eat a lot of sushi and sashimi.
Kumi has good seafood but the rest was quite mid. I'm holding out until the mega buffet opens as currently Kumi is the best that we'll get.
Love kumi. Build your own ramen was great. Dim sum was great. We've enjoyed it every time
Its open, had a soft opening.
Asian star buffet
I used to go here when I worked near it. Food is decent.
Yes, it’s open. Apparently it’s good? I’ll need to check it out
