TL;DR
Rolex and Moser: Leaders in Black Dials
Rolex is often praised for its deep, "Squid Ink" black dials, particularly in models like the Submariner [4]. However, many enthusiasts argue that Moser's Vantablack is unparalleled in achieving the deepest black possible
[1:1]
[4:3]. The simplicity and symmetry of Rolex designs continue to attract fans, with models like the 116600 being highlighted for their aesthetic appeal
[5].
Omega Aqua Terra and Speedmaster
The Omega Aqua Terra is frequently mentioned as a versatile watch with a black dial that suits both casual and formal occasions. Its polished indices and lacquer dial provide a classy look [1:2]
[2:2]. For those who appreciate the Omega brand but prefer a chronograph, the Speedmaster series offers various versions, including those with sapphire crystal and date complications
[3:6].
IWC and Other Brands
The IWC Mark XX is noted for its understated elegance and has become a favorite daily wear for some users [3:4]. Other brands worth considering include Sinn, which offers durable options like the Sinn 556 and 104
[3:6]
[3:12], and Nomos, known for its large-wearing watches
[2:6]. The JLC Polaris and Breitling also received positive mentions for their build quality and design
[2:2]
[2:1].
Personal Preferences and Recommendations
Ultimately, choosing the best black dial watch depends on personal preferences such as whether you favor dressier or sportier styles [2:6]. It's recommended to try watches on in person when possible, as photos may not fully capture their appeal
[2:3]. Remember to pick with your heart, as the watch that amazes you with its details and character is likely the right choice for you
[2:11].
Black dials are one of those things where despite being the most popular choice for dials I’m actually not all that crazy about black dials. Not that they’re bad or anything but I just think they’re mostly boring at this point. Although there is some black dials where i love the way they look & understand why they might be some people’s favorite. For example, here are some of my personal favorites.
The Rolex Submariner specifically the 5 digit 2 liner where most of the dial is untouched, the Patek 5170G with it’s nearly jet black dial & silver numerals, the Lange 1815 chronograph in black also similar to the Patek, the Seiko sarx035, the Speedmaster with it’s moon surface texture like dial, & finally the moser vanta black.
the new aqua terra black lacquer dial needs to be mentioned imo. that deep black with the polished indices has class on it.
or the old Aqua Terra black lacquer dial....
Plus one for this. That watch is hot in its simplicity
I'm a humble man with simple tastes. Just a nice, clean black dial. Nothing fancy.
Depends on what you’re after - the H Moser Vantablack is…. very black (by definition) - and very clean.
Am I the only one who thinks Movado every time they see this watch?
The Movado Museum is still a really nicely designed watch.
If the question is ‘best black’ dial rather than best ‘black dial’ then the Moser vantablack is the only answer.
I’d say the Patek calatrava 5226G, I absolutely love it
Not mine yet - was just trying it on. Keep going back and forth between vanta and funky fume as a dial (and leaning more towards the latter recently tbh)…
It's already been released!
Great watch, received a few compliments on it so far,
You can see it on my profile.
Calling any Patek underrated is an asinine statement in itself.
The JLC Polaris is an interesting choice. Thanks. I have a gray Aqua Terra right now and like the design.
Pick with your heart not with your brain
The one that stunned you the most and amazed you with it's details and character is the one to go
Always remember that and good luck collecting bro
Thanks for the words of wisdom. The issue is I don’t have an AD near me for any of the brands but Breitling and they don’t have the Navitimer 8 in stock. So I tend to buy things that look good in photos only to arrive and not be wowed.
Oh what a shame
You can try for searching the available AD near you and take a look to their black dial watches if you insist seeing the watch in real life, which personally I always believe that photos don't do the justice.
Have you checked Sinn? Or a round Bell and Ross?
I’m a big proponent of Nomos, and I almost purchased that Club Sport this summer. I think it’s a fantastic, versatile watch. Nomos watches tend to wear large though, so I recommend trying one on in person if possible. You can’t go wrong with that GO either. One of those two would be my choice, at least among your top 4. Do you tend to prefer dressier or sportier watches? That would probably guide my decision here..
Thanks. Wearing large isn’t a problem as I can wear up to 46mm with lug-to-lug width up to 52mm. I’m opening up to smaller case sizes to have more options. 42mm is a good feel for me.
I like the Glashutte best. :)
Me too. Love the big date.
Of the ones listed, I've only had the pleasure of trying on the Breitling, so I can only speak for that one. I was super impressed with the feel of the build quality. I liked it a whole lot and almost bought it on the spot.
I have been wearing timex’s and sport watches for 20 years. I have recently achieved a large work milestone and would like to celebrate with a premium, classic reference suitable for active daily wear and travel.
I tried on the Omega speedmaster professional and fell in love with it, but was turned off by the hesalite and its lack of a date function
Things I’d like:
-Date -Lume hands -Manageable / vintage ish size - somewhere in the 40-42 range feels right. -Subtle enough for daily wear, but nice enough to wear with the occasional suit -Chronometer a plus but not required -black dial -automatic preferred but open to manual -good durability / water resistance -$5k ish budget - likely will buy used in excellent condition -Im not much of a Rolex guy -I appreciate a well known brand with heritage that can be serviced globally
Any suggestions for classic pieces I should consider?
I would generally say that too, but that OP looks pretty understated on a black leather strap. Liking that look.
I mean, if you liked the speedmaster there are like 47 versions of it, including models with sapphire crystal and a date complication. You could also do a Bulova Lunar Pilot if you like the space angle. Also a Tudor black bay, an Omega Aqua Terra, a Sinn 556, the Longines Legend Diver, and IWC has a bunch of simple black pilot watches and chronographs.
I think my IWC Mark XX is my favorite watch and quickly became my daily. I know people say it's too simple for the price but it is just so nice in person and the bracelet is great.
Agreed. Great watch
Nice watch! Not quite my flavor but this is a beautiful piece!
The case screws drive me crazy. Same with the Royal Oak.
Thank you. I did try one on, oddly I felt it faced up larger than the moonswatch. Will take another look.
Loving my classic santos medium. Nice to have a grail(one of mine) on the arm that's not 100k+
39mm Omega Aqua Terra (first gen) might be exactly what you’re looking for and you can probably get one under $3k.
Bingo.
Tudor would be a good shout but you want a date and some of the best Tudors are no date.
Omega AT is the best “one and done” watch for my money, it’s a strap monster (rubber, bracelet, leather, nato) it can dress up or down, it has a date for convenience but you can swim with it and Omega have great after care even for watches you buy used.
I have a Sinn 104 and it’s probably my favorite watch. Something to consider.
black Santos is one of the nicest looking watches money can buy, regular Santos already is a great timepiece, but this... this is very, very nice.
Vantablack: "hold my beer"
Absof*ckinlutely
Respectfully, while I love a Rolex black dial, Moser is the king of black dials imho.
I’ve been a watch enthusiast for years and was never a fan of black dials due to their ubiquity, but this one kept growing on me due to its simplicity and the symmetry of the dial and bezel. The date window also fits in perfectly at 3 o’clock without announcing itself from a distance. I think Rolex hit it out of the park on this one!
Which ref is this? SD40?
Yep, 116600
As the title says, looking for a good black dial watch that isn’t super reflective. I own a Hamilton khaki field and an orient star in black, both beautiful watches, but you can hardly even see the dial under sunlight. Looking for something that won’t have that problem, or at least not to that much of an extent. Preferably under 500USD, size between 38-42, and open to any watch type (dress, field, etc) as long as the dial isn’t crazy busy. Thanks!
Never encountered such a problem. I have black dial Tissot and seems perfect. Also any Swatch automatic with black dial. This is what I can remember under 500 USD
Bulova 96b229 is legible in almost any lighting situation, I’d check it out if I were you
Marathon maybe? I had a Marathon navigator watch that was very easy to read in bright light.
Check out Marathon
I always forget about them. Thanks!
I can recommend the sterile dial version of the Steeldive SD1970. Matt black dial with excellent legibility, fabulous lume and really nice bezel. It is bigger than your preferred spec but wears smaller because of the case shape. If you're okay with tbe weight, I recommend it heartily. Excellent value for money.
I've had my watch for 6 months and I wear it all the time. My wrist size is 16 cm, for comparison.
Hi everyone, Im new to this sub and was curious if anyone was aware of an automatic black dial watch. Im not sure if one even exists with the specs im looking for.
Specs: 38-42 mm case diameter (close to 38 hopefully)
Thickness should be less than 10.5 mm
No open heart
must have a see through case back
Black dial
Silver case
Budget is $1000 but id like to see all of them even if they are out of my budget range
Thanks!
To be honest, there a ton of watches that fall into this category.
Would be good to have some more info - brushed or polished metal case? Date function? Do you want it to come on a bracelet, on leather, on a fabric strap, etc.? Do you want it more in a dressier or sportier style?
I'll throw two more into the ring:
Stowa Flieger and Damasko DS30. I think both can be had for around $1000 and they are more pilot style watches and I think both have clear casebacks.
Christopher Ward also has some other watches like the C63 and C60 which can be black dials.
Christopher Ward C63 Sealander (39mm width, 11.25mm thick)
Sinn 556 - a little more expensive, but not necessarily any better.
Monta Noble, Anthracite dial - killer bracelet, and luxury finishing.
Farer Erebus II.
Stowa Partitio.
Awesome info thank you!
Ive looked online and couldn’t find anything, the closest thing i could find was the Tissot classic dream swissmatic but its a bit thick
Seiko SNKL45 Or SNKL45J1. $90-$120ish on Amazon
Thanks!
This beauty sitting silently in my collection. Truly a no brainer black dress watch for practically any shirt. Wears best with light colours. :)
It got the looks of a Tissot 😍
Looking for something for everyday wear that I won’t mind getting scratched up. Divers are my thing, it is all I have ever owned.
Show me your favorite black bezel, black dials under $900.
Slick What's the lug to lug?
Thanks, 39mm case and 46mm lug to lug.
That’s really, really nice.
C60 trident pro
I'd also recommend the Lorier Neptune for a more vintage-y vibe.
You should check the tariff impact ….
If im not mistaken its paused for 90 days.
This thread has Scurfa written all over it
Traska Freediver. Say goodbye to scratches and enjoy your watch.

100% with this
I’m currently in the market for a black dial diver and I’m looking for recommendations. I had a CW Trident 600 and I thought it was fantastic! It’s now gone on a trade, and I ’m wondering if I can get something for better quality for a little bit more money? Or if Christopher Ward is the way to go. I’ve also been looking hard at the Longines Hydroconquest 39mm as an option.
I’m looking for 38-40mm with a Lug to Lug under 48mm.
Thanks!
Zodiac Super Sea Wolf skin diver 👌🏼
if you can stretch just a hair to under 41mm/49mm and dont mind going used, i dont see it getting better than a v2 oceanking
Hydroconquest hands down
It’s what I’m leaning towards, is there anything specific that sets it apart from its competitors for you?
History, movement, beauty (39mm), presence with large Arabic numerals.
best black dial watch
Key Considerations for Choosing a Black Dial Watch:
Style and Design: Determine whether you prefer a classic, sporty, or modern design. Black dials can suit various styles, from dress watches to dive watches.
Movement Type: Decide between quartz (battery-powered) and mechanical (automatic or manual). Quartz watches are typically more accurate and require less maintenance, while mechanical watches are often favored for their craftsmanship.
Material: Consider the case material (stainless steel, titanium, ceramic) and the strap (metal, leather, rubber) for durability and comfort.
Water Resistance: If you plan to wear the watch during activities like swimming or diving, look for a watch with a water resistance rating of at least 100 meters.
Brand Reputation: Some brands are known for their quality and craftsmanship. Research brands that have a good reputation in the watch community.
Recommendations:
Rolex Submariner: A classic dive watch with a black dial, known for its durability and timeless design. It's a luxury option that holds its value well.
Omega Seamaster: Another excellent dive watch with a sleek black dial, offering great water resistance and a stylish look.
TAG Heuer Carrera: A sporty chronograph with a black dial, perfect for those who appreciate motorsport-inspired designs.
Seiko Prospex Diver: A more affordable option with a robust build and excellent functionality, ideal for diving enthusiasts.
Tissot PRX: A stylish and versatile watch with a black dial, offering great value for a Swiss-made timepiece.
Choosing the right watch ultimately depends on your personal style, budget, and how you plan to use it.
