TL;DR
IWC Pilot Watches
IWC is frequently mentioned as a top choice for pilot watches. The IWC Mark XX is particularly favored for its design and functionality [1:1]
[1:4]. Many users consider IWC to be the quintessential pilot watch brand due to its history and quality
[1:3]
[2:5]. The IWC Spitfire is also praised for its magnificent design and high legibility
[2:3].
Breitling Navitimer
The Breitling Navitimer is another popular option, especially for those who appreciate a busy dial with a slide-rule bezel for aviation calculations [2:1]
[3:7]. However, some users have noted concerns about Breitling's current quality compared to other brands
[2:4]. Despite this, the Navitimer remains a classic choice for many pilots and aviation enthusiasts
[3:8].
Sinn Watches
Sinn offers several models that are well-regarded in the aviation watch community. The Sinn 903 St B E II is noted for being significantly cheaper than the Navitimer while offering an improved design [3:4]
[3:6]. Sinn's Flieger series is also recommended for its clean look and high legibility
[2:6].
Bell & Ross
Bell & Ross is appreciated for its high-quality designs and legibility, making it a strong contender among pilot watches [2:2]
[2:3]. The brand is often considered alongside IWC and Sinn for those seeking a reliable aviation watch.
Alternative Options
For those looking for something unique, the Breguet Type XX and Hamilton Murph offer distinctive styles. The Breguet Type XX is admired for its design, though some find its features overly complex [1:6]
[1:7]. The Hamilton Murph, created for the movie Interstellar, is celebrated as a space-themed watch
[5:1].
When choosing a pilot watch, consider your preferences for functionality (e.g., GMT, chronograph), style, and brand reputation. Each of these watches has its own strengths, so it's important to select one that aligns with your personal taste and needs.
Among all of the watches designed for use as a professional tool, nothing stands out to me as much as the pilot’s watch. Originating with the conception of the Cartier Santos, watches have shared a rich history and a strong connection with the aviation field, accompanying the wrist of military aviators, the first commercial pilots and astronauts. Throughout the years, designs have evolved; from super legible flieger style watches, to chronographs, slide rule bezels and GMT’s, each serving a specific and functional purpose. Today, the pilots watch serves not as a technological necessity, but as a window to the past, a reminder of how far we have come and an inspiration to reach new heights. These are some of my favorite modern pilot watches. What are yours?
IWC Mark XX, but I also really like the latest Zenith Pilot watches.
In general IWC pilots watches are my favorite. Out of the models shown. The Sinn
IWC IS the pilot watch brand
Tried on a bunch of watches recently and the Mark XX was easily one of my favorites
Same. And I have never liked them based on internet photos.
I stopped into IWC more to check out the Ingenieur and maybe try on a Chrono. I never got around to the chrono after trying the navy Mark XX. It just feels, wears, and looks so good in person.
Between a handful of Grand Seikos, JLCs, Breitling, and Tudors that I have tried on in the last 6 months, the Mark XX is the one I went home most impressed with.
My heart still loves GS most as a brand (my first true luxury watch is a GS), and I really really want a Tudor BB Pro based on its design, but the thickness and feel on the wrist just doesn't hit the way I wish it did. But that IWC is so nice. People should check it out.
So the best aviation watch is a Breitling 765 AVI and Hanhart 417ES copy. Ok.
Hanhart yes. Breitling no. Hanhart's design was captured as a post war win.
Not for me. The cold rolled case while nice is a bit OTT no matched dated window. And the hour chronograph is subdial is much less precise. The 15 minute counter complicates keeping track of the hours.
I like the Zulu Time
The brietling type 20 looks better imo
Navitimer.
Hey everyone. I am new to this sub and am curious on everyone’s suggestions for an aviation watch. I am in school to get my commercial pilots license and plan on getting myself a quality aviator watch once I complete the program. Right now I am leaning towards a Breitling navitimer with a mesh band. I love Breitlings history with making aviation watches and plane instruments and ever since seeing an advertisement for them with David Beckham wearing one with a mesh band I have loved that look. I am curious though about other peoples suggestions for an aviation watch. Thanks!
I’d go Sinn, Bell & Ross, or IWC. You’re just going to get better quality, in my opinion, and the designs are better, again, in my opinion. I like a cleaner look with just really huge legibility as top “tool” on my aviation watch. I own a model from each of those brands and would vouch for them. Real high quality watches.
Bell & Ross was definitely another I had been considering. Has Breitling gone down in quality and started relying on the name now or something? You’re not the first to mention quality.
That’s my impression. There are some Breitling die-hards out there with a tendency to get exercised about that opinion, but it is just an opinion. I may be wrong. We’ll say I feel better about the quality of the other watches, and just prefer their style. I seriously love my little Bell and Ross. I bought it because I thought the full lume dial was cool while I was picking up a “nicer” watch for my wife and ended up absolutely adoring that little watch in a way I never expected to. I feel the same way about my IWC Spitfire. It’s a magnificent little watch, but at an ever so slightly higher price point than where you may be looking. Legibility is also the only real tool. Also putting in that plug for the Sinn. Classic aviator watches with great design. Mine runs like a little dream.
Stowa, IWC and Laco.
Yeah I am considering IWC and possibly Bell and Ross as well. Thank you for the other suggestions!
tfw you’re a nazi
Longines Spirit series, Oris Propilot, IWC Mark XX, Sinn 356 Flieger etc.
Check out Brellum they have a pilot line that are sweet.
There are two schools of thought. A watch with a GMT complication so a pilot can have the local time on the bezel and their home time on the dial is common. There are tons of affordable options here, and many GMT's are ubiquitous. Your main decision will be dial color, bezel color, quarts vs. automatic, and braceles vs. strap.
Also, many pilots take pride in airmanship, so they like to keep their navigation skills sharp. So, a chronograph for timing turns and a slide-rule bezel for computations are popular. The Breitling Navitimer kinda rules the roost in this category, but the Sinn 903 is probably a close second. There are some other slide rule watches out there that aren't bad either, like Citizen Promaster Nighthawk, Navihawk, and even Casio Ediface that are quite affordable.
Thank you for the detailed response!
I have a dilemma I’d be grateful for some opinions on. I have a landmark birthday coming up and have decided I’d like a nice pilot’s watch to round off my collection. There are three that I’m interested in but I can’t decide between:
Breitling Navitimer - I like how busy the dial is and have wanted the blue version with white chronograph for years. However, new these are out of my price range so I’d have to go used and they don’t seem to come up very often in my size (44mm and under). And part of me wants the AD experience for this landmark purchase.
IWC Pilot Chrono - I like these a lot, and new it’s in budget, but is it a little boring compared to the Navitimer?
Rolex Air King - I really like the dial and the splash of green pops nicely. My AD says it’s achievable within a few months as it’s a less in demand piece but I’m not sure if its less traditional take on the pilot watch aesthetic might leave me wanting more.
In summary I’m after a nice pilot watch, budget of no more than £6.5k. I like busy dials. Would prefer new but open to used for something special. Does anyone have any thoughts on the 3 I’ve mentioned or are there other options that might be work considering?
Thanks in advance!
The Omega Speesmaster Moonphase sort of splits the difference. I think the Air King isn't a good substitute for the Breitling.
Lovely watch. Good point re the Air King, such a contrast to the Breitling and it probably wouldnt completely cure my pilot watch itch.
41mm navi. Forget AD experience, save money by going secondary or gray.
True, on reflection better to invest money in the watch that will last me a lifetime rather than a shopping experience that could only last for a matter of minutes!
Have you considered a Sinn 903 St B E II?
Significantly cheaper with improved design - https://www.watchgecko.com/blogs/magazine/why-the-sinn-903-isnt-just-a-navitimer-homage
With the money you save on a nice Breitling you could take a weeklong vacation in Hawaii. That AD markup is extreme.
The AD experience is a giant waste of money for anyone that has a budget limitation they are managing. Come over to my house, I'll put on gloves, serve you some garbage prosecco and tell you what a wise choice you made.
I got my Navitimer new with warranty for $2,800 off by going through Chrono24.
Buy the Sinn version of the Navitimer. Half the price for same thing
.
In fairness I can’t deny that is a beautiful watch!
It’s the same. Sinn bought the rights and tooling for Navitimer years ago when Breitling was having money troubles.
Navitimer. Save up. And postpone the purchase.
For my money, I’d go with IWC for a pilot’s watch.
In my mind, a three watch collection should include a durable tool watch (diver/g-shock), a multifunctional watch (gmt/chronograph), and a dress watch.
For me, it would be:
G shock - Lunar Pilot - PRX
Too bad this sub doesn’t allow photos.
Tool watch: Casio G-Shock GW-M5610U. Doubles as a GMT and chronograph because it has those functions, too.
Daily wear/GADA: Seiko Selection SBTM323. Solar, radio-syncing, perpetual calendar.
Dress: Citizen Collection SID66-5191. Solar, classic size at 34.8mm, thin at 5.3mm, on a leather strap.
That’ll about do for anything. You’re in for all three together at about $600.
In EU this collection is nearly impossible. The Citizen is no longer sold here and the alternative [sold by private jewelry stores, not even the Citizen official website] goes up to 300€ and 39 mm case diameter. Still wearable but not quite as classy as that thin 5.3mm piece. Plus shipping, of course.
Same for the Seiko Selection. Unavailable in EU, you can only get it from US/ Asia for 260€ plus shipping. So the entire budget, IF the watches are found, ends here.
As for the G-Shock it goes for 120€ here. So basically 680€ + shipping cost from overseas for two watches [can go over 70€ easily] = 750€ -> 850 USD.
Still an impressive collection...for non EU citizens! [Pun intended]
Citizen promaster diver - Cartier tank quartz - Casio ae1200
Cartier tank being affordable?
Well, one can dream LOL missed the affordable part. Last time I checked some models are in 1000 to 3000usd range. Perhaps a Vario Versa is more affordable. I just like rectangular dress watch 😜

Is this the best watch to wear while playing space themed video games? Does anyone have a favorite watch for sci-fi in general?
I love this Bulova Lunar Pilot and it is my first chronograph. As you all know, they run pretty big but I think overall the size is fine for me. Has anyone had any alternative straps and the steel one? Any thoughts on how the different straps compare when it comes to fit since there micro adjustments?
Bulova spaceview
Yours is definitely awesome, but if you really want a space/scifi themed watch, there is absolutely no watch more perfect and fitting than the Hamilton Murph. It was literally created as a prop for the movie Interstellar, and they later released it for public sale. It is THE space watch, hands down.
I’m new to this and not quite ready to spend that much on a watch yet. And once I am, there are going to be others that are more my style. But I’ve heard about the Murph, and yeah it’s really the only answer here IMO!
I am overwhelmed by the amount of choices of type A pilot watches. I hope this question narrows it down. Which watch in your opinion is the best in each category?
-Budget
-Historical accuracy (look, dimensions, movt etc)
-Specs
-Overall
If budget is a big concern I’d really look at all of Tandorio’s offerings. They have a wide array of dial options in their pilot case. I have one of the more basic models I picked up on sale for like $35 and love it. I think they offer solid watches for the price.
Definitely not historically accurate- but I’m really digging their newer offering of a NH34A GMT with Grand Seiko style dial in a traditional pilot case. Really cool combo. Love the grand Seiko look but rarely do I dress in a way that merits such a fancy watch. Pilots I can rock daily.
Don’t forget a sale is coming up at the end of the month, so don’t buy just yet.
I would say the Escapement Time Flieger. I mostly hear/read great stories about it.
IIRC that was the older NH35 version which they don't sell any more.
The 40mm PT5000 is worth a look, but I found the crystal and dial too reflective.
The ET flieger type B has to be the most in and out of my cart item ever on Ali. I put it in my cart so times but never pulled the trigger on it.
They're sold with a vh31. I have no experience with that movement. Do you?
I just received the the Escapement time Flieger type A and it’s seriously insanely beautiful.
It’s a near copy to the stowa 40mm.
Even the movement is a clone SW200 and PT5000.
You’d be insane to pay $1300+ for stowa when Escapement times flieger for $95 on sale.
Some others don’t have the right case or the right movement or the crown.
But the Escapement time is shockingly beautiful and an insane watch for $95 and a PT5000 movement.
When does it go on sale? I see it for 200 cad right now (I know you mean 95 usd, but that's still much lower than 200 cad)
Escapement time 👍🏻
I woldn't consider my self an expert...but I'll take a stab at it.
Budget - Addiesdive pilot - NH35, sapphire, bracelet, all for $60 is a steal. finishing, date window, dial logo, and case design are the things I'm not hugly fond of
Historically accurate - Hruodland pilots they have a few style and even distressed versions. case and sizes are accurate from what I know of.
Specs - Cronos pilot like I said below, spec monster with great finishing and proportions. plus they are clearancing them out so it's like $135-ish with coupons. which is a bargain for a Cronos on a bracelet
overall - if I were buying a type A, whether it was an older style type A or a newer (IWC mark XIII homage) I'd probably go with the cronos. good looks, nice color options, nice bracelet, perfect size (for me), good lume, and very nice proporions. finishing should be top notch as well.
You can get the black Addiesdive with a sterile dial.
addiesdive or tandorio for budget options
if you want something more special, the hruodland turbine adds an extra touch and is very beautiful
I want to buy myself a new watch but I am in no way shape or form an expert. I am not looking to spend more than like 250-500. I love pilot watches especially the simple ones like Mil-tecs and the stauer co-pilot. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Already looked at Laco? They are quite affordable and one of the original 5 to produce the pilot watches for the German Luftwaffe.
I just looked them up they look great and the historical tie in makes them even cooler, can you speak to their durability? I’m looking for an everyday watch
Got mine a while back, and so far, so good. No complaints and accuracy is acceptable. Most reviews I've read are quite positive.
I have the Laco Aachen 42 and the last-gen Seiko Flightmaster in blue. Both are pretty solid options depending on what you’re looking for.
The Laco has the historical value and both A and B types are available depending on what your dial preference. The 42’s case is max capacity for my wrist (~6.75”)but you can get the 39 if the 50mm lug to lug on the 42 is too large. The strap and water resistance could be better considering the price of the watch and it doesn’t exactly fit under a cuff, especially with heavy sweaters. You can however get it on a metal bracelet and/or swap out the band; it’s wicked comfortable on a single-pass paratrooper strap.
The Seiko is nice and thin being quartz and has a chronograph and higher water resistance. I think the newer model is much harder to read than the last one, but that brings the question of new vs used. Both are cheaper than the Laco
So I googled that Stauer - that’s really just playing on the Breitling Navitimer. I really can’t think of many inexpensive alternatives, so I’ll veer slightly off course. Citizen Nighthawk, Seiko Flightmaster, or find something similar to the Citizen ref. BL5400-52A (which you may need to find used, it may be out of production).
For more traditional pilot watches like that Mil-tec, I’d say look at Laco. Steinhart also makes a few pilot watches, but they don’t have the history Laco has behind them (as Laco was one of the original companies that made flieger watches.
Yeah the laco watches are certainly standing out to me in a good way? Are the durable? I’m looking for an everyday watch
Heading out with the pilot pioneer today. Such a clean looking watch that fits my relatively skinny wrist. I love the utilitarian look of it. Have it on a nato from nomad watch works.
Looks really good man
Thanks! Appreciate it 🙏🏽
Long time reddit lurker (especially r/watches), but first post.
I have been looking for a nice simple pilots watch with a metal bracelet for about 2 years. I really like the IWC Mark XVIII and the Pilot Chrono, but could not bring myself to spend the extra $$$ for the brand. Then spent a long time deciding between Sinn / Laco / Archimede, but ultimately settled for the Archimede Pilot 39 A S (clean watch-face, bit smaller for my small wrists, beautiful bracelet, ETA 2824-2).
Extremely happy with it (have had it for two months). The craftsmanship / finish is incredible and the design is so clean. Works at about +10s a day pretty consistently. Should post a lumen shot as well, really nice!
Did I miss any other clean pilot watches with metal bracelets in my research? Already thinking about my next watch...
Sinn 556a red seconds is pretty clean. Similar size too.
Yes I like that one - just the position of the date annoys me a bit...
What size is your wrist?
Great looking watch! Love how simple and clean the design is.
Looks like another watch to add to my wish list...
Thanks! Took a bit of a risk as I could only buy this online and not in a shop. What other watches are on your list? Looking for inspiration!
It’s a great fit, is it 39mm?
Same as you I really like some of the IWC pilots, a bit out of my price range at the moment though. Another on the list is Junghans Meister Agenda (dark face).
I’ve recently bought a Hamilton khaki field mechanic and have been really impressed with the quality so I’ve added their jazz master and pilot watches to the list as well.
Are the endlinks solid on the bracelet? I have the pilot 39 as well, and am considering getting the bracelet.
That is a gorgeous watch.
Thanks locksnsocks!

best pilot style watch
Key Considerations for Choosing a Pilot Style Watch:
Legibility: Look for a watch with a clear, easy-to-read dial. Large numerals and high-contrast hands are essential for quick reading, especially in low-light conditions.
Functionality: Consider features like a chronograph, GMT function, or a rotating bezel for tracking time zones or elapsed time, which can be useful for pilots.
Durability: A robust case and scratch-resistant crystal are important for withstanding the rigors of flying. Look for materials like stainless steel or titanium.
Water Resistance: A minimum of 100 meters of water resistance is advisable to ensure the watch can handle various environments.
Comfort: Since pilots often wear watches for extended periods, choose one that is comfortable on the wrist, ideally with an adjustable strap.
Top Recommendations:
Breitling Navitimer: Known for its iconic slide rule bezel, this watch is a classic pilot's watch that combines functionality with style. It features a chronograph and is highly legible.
IWC Big Pilot's Watch: This watch offers a large, clear dial and a power reserve indicator, making it both functional and stylish. Its oversized case is comfortable and easy to read.
Seiko Prospex Pilot's Watch: A more budget-friendly option, this watch is durable, water-resistant, and features a clear dial with luminous hands for visibility in low light.
Citizen Eco-Drive Skyhawk: This watch features atomic timekeeping, multiple time zones, and a solar-powered movement, making it a practical choice for pilots.
Recommendation: If you're looking for a blend of functionality and classic design, the Breitling Navitimer is a top choice, but if you're on a budget, the Seiko Prospex offers excellent value without sacrificing essential features.
