TL;DR
Gentle Exfoliation and Moisturization
For those dealing with keratosis pilaris (KP), gentle exfoliation combined with effective moisturization is key. CeraVe SA Body Wash is frequently recommended due to its ability to gently exfoliate while still being suitable for sensitive skin [3:1]. It’s important to follow up with a thick moisturizer, such as Eucerin Advanced Repair or CeraVe's own moisturizer, to lock in hydration
[1:1].
Salicylic Acid Products
Salicylic acid is a popular ingredient for treating KP due to its exfoliating properties. Naturium's Salicylic Acid Body Wash is highly praised for its effectiveness in smoothing out KP bumps [2:1],
[4:1]. Users recommend allowing the product to sit on the skin for a few minutes before rinsing to maximize its benefits
[4:2],
[4:3].
Alternative Options
For those seeking alternatives, Bioderma Body Oil Wash provides a luxurious feel while keeping the skin moisturized [2:1]. Additionally, some users have found success with natural bar soaps that have higher glycerin content, which can be beneficial for dry skin
[3:2].
Routine and Additional Tips
A consistent routine involving exfoliation and moisturization is crucial for managing KP. Some users suggest using salicylic acid face washes on the body for targeted exfoliation, followed by urea-based lotions like Prequel's Urea Lotion for additional moisture [5:1]. It's also important to avoid over-exfoliation, as it can lead to irritation and itching
[5:8].
Professional Treatments
For more severe cases of KP, professional treatments such as retinols, lasers, or chemical peels may be considered, but these should be discussed with a dermatologist [5:3].
I'm a female in my late 30s. My KP seems to be getting worse as I age. I have very dry skin and that is making it worse too. What has anyone found that helps? TIA

I'm also trying to treat my KP, and recently started becoming much more digent in a routine to combat it (since I suddenly have so much free time haha). The best body wash would probably be a very gentle one like CeraVe's Hydrating Body Wash. Be nice to your skin-- don't scrub too hard and don't use super hot water. Dryness will exacerbate the KP, so you'll want to be diligent with moisturizing your skin (I apply Eucerin Advanced Repair while still damp from my shower) and using a product with urea or salicylic acid (Amlactin, CeraVe SA rough & bumpy, etc.) 1-2x a day to dried skin (so not wet right out of the shower). Personally, keeping up with this for just a week so far has really helped smooth out the skin on my arms and thighs.
What is your favourite body wash that actually removes bacteria, exfoliates or helps with Keratosis pilaris specifically and preferably has a nice luxury feel or smell.
Or what is your routine for body care when you shower/bath. I’m a mom and don’t have a ton of time but also am sick of using generic drugstore stuff and my skin feeling not soft. I want the product to actually have ingredients that are antibacterial though and something with a nice smell.
I like Naturium's Salicylic Acid body wash for my arms and use it most days of the week. Twice a week I use Naturium's Glycolic Acid Mask Scrub on my arms where I have KP. This combo plus Prequel's Urea Lotion in the morning and Naturium's Retinol Body Lotion before bed has cleared up my arms.
I use Bioderma Body Oil Wash on the rest of my body.
I just started using that salicylic acid BW after reading about it in this group. Is it not supposed to be used every day? I don’t shower every day so atm I’m not overusing it, but just curious.
I think you can use it every day. I just sub the Glycolic Scrub Mask 2x a week for extra exfoliation. I don't know that the salicylic acid wash by itself would be enough for the kp on my arms.
Thanks this sounds like ingredients that make sense and cover all my bases
Seconding the Naturium SA body wash for having great performance and feel for the price point and I think that alone would check many of your boxes so I’d definitely recommend trying it.
I’ll add that the SA wash many of the other Prequel and Naturium products listed here are unscented so will probably not give you the sensory experience you also mention.
I’d recommend smelling the Bioderma Oil Wash and the Naturium Oil Washes to see if one of those gives you your scent fix. If they don’t, the scented options from brands like Dove might be a good option or there are higher-end options from brands like Necessare and Salt & Stone that have more sophisticated scents but also nicely moisturizing formulas.
[Edit to fix typo]
Black african soap with an African net or the Naturium salicylic acid body wash
I also like the olay body washes!
You can use the Acnefree oil free benzoyl peroxide cleanser if you really want to manage acne bacteria. It's also very comfy and elegant. Otherwise you don't really need general antibacterial washes. You should just be looking for a nicer body moisturizer. The gold bond age renew retinol lotion would be nice for that
I don’t really have body acne. Shouldn’t you use a soap though or an antibacterial body wash anyways?
You don't need to distirb your skin microbiome for no reason, no. If your skin is healthy then that's not necessary to use some antibacterial agents unless your doctor advised such. Just normal washing is more than adequate.
You can use a body wash on your skin if you prefer to, but it's only necessary when your skin is soiled or oily or in areas with skin-on-skin contact like armpits or groin or whatever. The ginger Lily Zeroderm body wash 1gallon is very nice.
I’m in Australia and I use Glowy Skin Exfoliating Body Wash 500ml - it’s $10 and lasts me months!! I use it after gym .

Antibacterial soap will just destroy your natural skin biome and likely lead to issue like yeast infections.
It’s not recommended for body wash unless you’re about to have surgery or have a specific medical issue.
And regular soap is designed to mechanically remove bacteria so nothing special needed
I'm looking for the best body wash that will sooth or not irritate my KP and leave my body moisturized
Anyone with my similar issue please leave me some tips and body washes to use
Have you tried natural bar soap? Not the store bought bars...a real, natural (probably handmade) bar. The glycerine content is usually much higher in natural bar soaps which really helps with dry skin.
I started taking the collagen peptides with hyaluronic acid and vit c and it has helped my skin so much. My arms used to feel so bumpy.
Following this. I’m 35, always had it on my upper arms (and even on my upper legs when I was younger). Now my 2 year old has it on her upper arms and legs too. I was so self conscious about it as a child - I don’t want my baby to be. 😢 I’ve tried so many things but to no avail.
Is that what the red bumps on my upper arms are?? TIL
I have KP too and super sensitive skin CeraVe SA Body Wash has helped a lot. It’s gentle but still exfoliates. Follow with a thick moisturizer and it makes a big difference!
Do body washes with salicylic acid really help smoothing the skin and fading kp marks? Or is there any other solution? I have seen bodywise and arata body washes but dont know if they'll really help
I started 10 days ago so I can’t really say for now, but it’s supposed to help ! Do you let it sit on your skin during the showing ? They’re meant to stay a little ( 2-3mn ) and then rinsed off
Oh is it so? I didn't know about this
Make sure you allow shower products to sit for a few minutes before rinsing. I use a body cleanser and a shower oil and I get a better result when I allow them to work for a few minutes before rinsing. I think it has improved some of the hyperpigmentation too.
My pharmacist told me this ! Rub the product well on the problem areas, let it sit ( say the alphabet twice ) and rince well :)
Idk about fading kp marks but the naturium salicylic acid body wash has smoothed out my kp bumps
That’s so good to know !!!
Oh okay
Hi! new here. Lived with KP all my life (early 20s now). My back looks scarred because of KP bumps which appeared 5 years ago. They are dark and patchy and it covers entirety of my upper back (kissed goodbye to backless). And on my arms they've been as long as I can remember. I've started using Dermadew soap and although it sort of lightened my KP for my arms with regular use, my back is still the same. I'm looking for a good KP bodywash( salicylic, glycolic, urea) and a full KP treatment routine.
I have been using the Sirona Bodywash. It seems to help my KP. This summer I experienced extreme itching on my back as well as my chest and neck. Right now thankfully its under a little under control and I have repurchased the bodywashes in sale.
I've heard over exfoliating is bad so that maybe the case for itching.
You cant 'cure' KP but can stay ahead of the curve.
See a derm. Till then this is what I do..I have/had severe KP on my legs.
You will see amazing results in two wk . Status now : 90 % bumps gone. PIH is still there. Planning to incorporate lab muffin DIY vit c for body but I am lazy as of now.
Important : if I stop doing this, KP will be back to square one . You have to understand that etiology is still not clear though hair shaft defect and follicular keratinization defect have been proposed. So it is all about symptomatic management. Hope it helps.
If my body skin type is dry, can I use salicylic acid facewash on legs?
People with kp have extremely dry skin. Sometimes it can put sahara desert to shame. The problem is with the mechanism of its shedding dead cells which is genetic but not clearly understood. The hair follicles get 'trapped ' if I may oversimplify it. Exfoliate and moisturize is the way to go. Derms even prescribe retinols or laser or peels but those are professional treatments not DIY.
Can you tell exactly what salicylic acid facewash you use? I want to buy one
Lacne 2% ( la pristine) or saslic ds 2% (cipla) both pharma grade.
I have a question, isn't paraffin bad for the skin and moisturex cream has liquid paraffin, are there any substitutes ?

Check out Dr. Sutvak on instagram. She uploaded a reel recently with budget friendly suggestions.
Y’all, I’ve had KP for years, if not for as long as I can remember. Its been really, really bad and no matter what I have tried (gluten-free, basic dove bar soap, lactic acid, dermatologist recommended creams, etc. you name it) not one thing has worked, BUT this Naturium Glycolic Acid Wash.
Just only a few days ago I started using it because I ran out of my regular body wash and today I randomly noticed how smooth my arms and legs felt and looked, which is typically where my KP is the worst. I usually have horrible, super raised red and clear tiny bumps everywhere on my arms and thighs, and I can literally tell you they are non-existent now.
Anyway, please try. I’m shocked and need to share!
This is one of the few things that has a noticeable effect for me. My skin is much smoother and less bumpy afterwards. If you want a stronger effect, you can lather it on your dry skin like a mask for a few minutes before you scrub it with water.
Cool! I’ll try
Has it helped with areas of pigmentation on the body (if you have any)?
I think so, but I mainly deal with red or discolored bumps so because those have dissipated, my skin is much more even toned now.
this product gave me psoriasis. never again
Ive been using and its not done much for me 🤷🏼♂️
Aw bummer. Maybe its all hit or miss
same
Same
same 😞
The KP scrub is their best product imo
Hello folks! I know basically nothing about skincare and am wanting to swap out my facewash I've been using. My derm tells me I have KP on my face. I also have it on my upper arms, but that doesn't bother me. I recently ran out of my typical facewash, and then I got pretty sick for several days so I haven't bought a replacement. My face is suddenly almost buttery smooth presumably from a combination of IV fluids at the hospital, not using that facewash (despite it being something I specifically bought to help the KP), showering less, and getting more hydration in.
All of that being said, I'd love to keep this soft version of my face around for as long as possible. Do you all have any recommendations for a daily cleanser/facewash for me to use in the shower? I live in the middle of nowhere, so something I can just pick up at CVS/Walmart rather than relying on the postal system is best. I also don't particularly want anything very expensive or cumbersome to my routine. I don't mean to sound picky, but I have a lot of trouble sticking with changes to my routine. Thanks for any recommendations.
I’ve been using Bump buster by a new k-beauty brand called Geoul Gwanli; its worked wonders so far, highly recommend!!
Hi Can someone please recommend an exfoliating body wash or soap available in dm or in a similar drugstore budget in Germany I’m looking for something that contains salicylic acid. I could find some face wash options but haven’t come across any body wash or soaps with salicylic acid Any other dm/drugstore product recommendations for keratosis pilaris are also welcome :)
In DM, you can find Balea beauty expert peeling (greenish and white bottle) with salicylic acid on your body. I use it after showering to prevent razor bumps and it is working great. It is also ultra cheap, so you I recommend you try it :)
There's a body wash for men from L'Oréal with SA.
Cerave carries an SA body wash and the ordinary has an SA serum. The solution also has a lotion with SA.
Any face product will work on the body. Guessing you're not using salicylic acid all over your body but targeting areas so a salicylic acid face wash will do just fine (if not better).
I sometimes get KP on the outer edges of my upper arms. Dry brushing and chemical exfoliation help (Balea 15% urea lotion and Balea AHA body lotion both help and basically completely eradicate it when it shows up)
Used the skincare kit for my face and got really good results (had closed comedones). I saw they also had a body wash and wandered maybe it can do miracles for my KP as well, it doesn’t specify if it suits KP or not so I’m looking for some advice.
I think it may help since it has tea tree oil which helps with bacteria and has AHA which also is used for kp
I have used this for my Kp and it really made a difference. I use their toner pads tio
Thank you! I ordered it. When did you start seeing results? Would you say it helps more with redness or the bumps? My KP is mostly bumps no redness
If you’ve liked another part of the range I’d give it a go. Nothing to lose. Then again I have countless of half empty tubes in my bathroom cabinet trying to treat my KP
Yeah same, but I’m desperate and this series did clear my face so why not
If it’s affordable for you I’d go for it
I've only seen one person who spoke of double cleansing their body to manage body acne or clogged pores outside of removing water-resistant sunscreen in this subreddit. I have tried substituting my regular bar soap for an oil cleanser and was surprised to see my keratosis pilaris slowly vanishing. I am wondering since all that keratosis pilaris is, is non-inflamed closed (micro)comedones if there would hypothetically be any benefit to trying double cleansing on the body since switching to an oil cleanser has honestly been a major breakthrough for me.
Edit: I wanted to clarify that I have been using acid exfoliants and other keratolytic agents and am aware of their benefits for KP. I have been using Amlactin for the past two years, but it has never produced results like this with other bar soaps and shower gels than it did with an oil cleanser. So, to clarify I made the post inquiring about double cleansing as using an oil cleanser has provided the deepest and most exfoliating cleanse I have ever experienced in my life and it's making the keratin plugs shrink!!
So, I hypothesize that since Keratin plugs are nothing but sebum, dead cell and keratin debris trapped in the follicle. The abundance of keratin makes sebum and rest of the debris stick to the follicle lining and so I'd hypothesize that using oil to cleanse meaning "like" dissolves "like" is why the plugs are shrinking also seems that it is preventing TEWL as well meaning my skin stays moisturized longer.
For me, acid exfoliating and diligent moisturizing alleviated my KP, probably because the acid helped break down the plugs and the moisturizers keep dry plugs from forming, is my guess.
I don’t think cleansing is really the key here for KP, because it’s not like a dirty thing. Since the oil cleanser is working for you I would stick with that, I use a bioderma cleansing oil type thing on my KP regularly, and it helps, but I still always use a fry skin moisturizer ever since I learned what KP was like 7-8 years ago.
The real breakthrough for me was the acid exfoliation, I discovered this a year or two ago, by putting some pretty fermented kefir on my skin as a sort of mask. Kefir is a probiotic drink, kind of like yogurt, I make it everyday. It has lactic acid in it, which is an alpha hydroxy acid. I soak some washcloths in it and then put it on the back of my arms for about 20 min, then shower like normal. That helped immediately in a few uses.
I don’t have body acne really so I can’t speak much for that, but whenever I do have some breakouts on my back, usually from summer and being sweaty, I’ll just wash with my salicylic acid face wash and that helps a lot.
Thank you for your response! However, I should have specified my knowledge and use of acid exfoliants and keratolytic agents for my KP for the last 5 years now. To mention how important and how much of a breakthrough this has been I want to highlight that after just two uses of an oil cleanser instead of bar soap my keratin plugs began to shrink, unplug hair and the pigment of the plug is beginning to disappear although there is no doubt that the combined use of this oil cleanser with my amlactin lotion (has 15% lactic acid) are causing this as my amlactin has never produced results of this kind with other bar soaps and shower gels.
Now, I want to clear up another thing (I should probably edit my questioned at this point ^^) it turns out in my case that cleansing is a huge deal and "dirt" does factor but it isn't that I need to cleanse more or that I am dirtier. Keratin plugs are nothing, but sebum, dead cell and keratin debris trapped in the follicle. I was never expecting that changing to an oil cleanser would change my skin, so I am also blown away!
Lastly, I wanted to mention that you are on to something about the kefir and probiotics it turns out biotic skincare by helping our microbiome helps reduce KP. I also use a probiotic spray with AOB's (ammonia oxidizing bacteria) that feeds off the ammonia your skin produces when you sweat and consequently feeds off the ammonia that is released by the lactic acid in Amlactin.
Ah yes I think I misinterpreted the cleansing part. When I think cleansing I imagine removing debris, which I guess is what cleansing is, and therefore exfoliation is a type of cleansing. But for some reason in my mind it’s separate. So double cleansing methods that have double exfoliation properties should help! I’m on the same page now.
I just took out my oil cleanser again thanks to your post, my skin has been so dry lately and it’s really helped, and soothed my arms where my KP is the worst.
That’s so interesting about the probiotics! It didn’t even occur to me the probiotic aspect could be helpful, I originally used it for the lactic acid component to exfoliate, but now I’m tempted to use it over my whole body more.
I’m interested to see where body skincare goes in the future, I recently saw an advertisement for a body wash with retinol… that’s got me interested in if that might help with KP too!
What cleanser are you using, perhaps it contains acids, which is usually what helps best with kp.
I was just messing around and used my facial oil cleanser. It is numbuzin's easy peasy cleansing oil that contains zero acids but does contain one skin identical ingredient which I hypothesize follows the "like" dissolves "like" of the oil cleansing method wherein this case the oil is melting the keratin and dead cell waste trapped in the pore of the keratin plug.
Sorry, I just edited my post to include my hypothesize.
It’s possible, always good to find something that helps. Looks like a very gentle cleanser.
Eucerin Urea 10% so far has been the best thing I have tried for my KP. Recently my partner even commented on how smooth my hips are (don't laugh anyone KP on my butt/hips has been really annoying me before this lotion).
Thank you for replying! I just edited my post to include that I am familiar with and have been using acid exfoliants and other keratolytic agents for the benefits they provide for alleviating Kp. I'm glad you are finding success and kp on the butt and hips was the last place I suspected for mine to spread 😑. I have tried a ISDN's ureadin 20 emollient hydrating cream and it didn't do anything besides smell good. I have found great success with Amlactin instead. Lactic acid seems to work the best for me out of everything else for some reason. That and salicylic acid body scrubs however I made the post inquiring about double cleansing as using an oil cleanser has provided the deepest and most exfoliating cleanse I have ever experienced in my life and it's making the keratin plugs shrink!!
A bit off-topic, but this cream is fantastic for dry feet as well. It will make them baby soft in the Winter, when my heels are dry and rough from wearing wool socks. It will also make them baby soft in the Summer, when wearing sandals cause my heels to dry out from being exposed to the elements.
I use baby oil on my body right after the shower after patting dry. It’s amazing and my KP is virtually gone.
I find my cleanser works so well is either because of the skin-identical ingredients or fatty lipids in the oils used. In your case, I suspect this maybe true depending on which baby oil you are using but in the instance of the plain ol' johnson and johnson it can reportedly hold up to 10x it's weight in moisture. It may be that and the fact that you may have a higher TEWL and lipid loss threshold during cleansing as that is usually the time skin losses the most moisture and oil; making it super hard to replace during the moisturizing stage. I have heard of a case of people solving their kp entirely by slathering themselves in coconut oil after showering so this is believable. Didn't work for me though. Glad you've found success in riding yourself of this pesky skin condition.
i started getting deep keratin acne on my back, may sometimes come to a little head but i can feel under the skin how full and deep it is. i started double cleansing it and it’s doing too good of a job, actually cleansing the skin right off the acne, emptying the weird keratin liquid like stuff from it and leaving an open wound ….. idk if it’s good or bad but im just happy to have found something that works.. the scan heals the deep keratin deposits don’t 🤷🏼♀️
Best body washes for keratosis pilaris
Key Considerations for Body Washes for Keratosis Pilaris (KP)
Exfoliating Ingredients: Look for body washes that contain exfoliating agents like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid. These help to remove dead skin cells and smooth the skin's texture.
Moisturizing Properties: Choose body washes that are hydrating and contain ingredients like glycerin, shea butter, or ceramides to help maintain skin moisture and prevent dryness.
Gentle Formulation: Opt for fragrance-free and hypoallergenic products to minimize irritation, as KP can be sensitive to harsh ingredients.
pH-Balanced: A pH-balanced body wash can help maintain the skin's natural barrier and prevent further irritation.
Recommended Products:
CeraVe SA Body Wash: Contains salicylic acid for exfoliation and ceramides for hydration. It's gentle and effective for KP.
Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash: Features colloidal oatmeal for soothing and moisturizing, making it a good option for sensitive skin.
Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash: Contains salicylic acid to help clear and prevent breakouts, suitable for KP on the body.
Eucerin Roughness Relief Body Wash: Formulated with urea and other moisturizing ingredients to help smooth rough skin.
Paula's Choice Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA: This product combines exfoliation with hydration, specifically targeting KP.
Takeaway: Incorporating an exfoliating body wash into your routine can help manage keratosis pilaris effectively. Always follow up with a good moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated and smooth. If irritation occurs, consider consulting a dermatologist for personalized recommendations.
