TL;DR
Decathlon/Kiprun
Decathlon is frequently mentioned as a top choice for affordable athletic wear. Their Kiprun range is particularly praised for offering good quality at a lower price compared to other brands [4:2]. While their Kalenji-branded items can be hit or miss, Kiprun products are consistently recommended for shorts and tops
[4:1]
[4:4].
Old Navy
Old Navy's running gear is another budget-friendly option that users have found reliable. They offer running shorts with practical features like zip pockets, and their tanks are noted for affordability, especially during sales [4:1]. The availability of tall lengths is an added benefit for those who need it.
Athleta and Gymshark
Athleta is favored for its squat-friendly leggings and overall quality [2:4]
[2:5]. Gymshark is known for its stylish designs, though the quality can vary, so it's advisable to check reviews before purchasing
[2:3]. Both brands offer a range of activewear suitable for various activities.
Vuori
Vuori is recommended for shorts, although some users are not fans of their tops [5:1]. This brand is appreciated for its comfort and style, making it a popular choice among athletic wear enthusiasts.
Secondhand Options
For those open to secondhand shopping, platforms like Poshmark and Mercari offer lightly used athletic wear from high-quality brands at reduced prices [4:3]
[4:6]. This approach allows you to access premium brands without paying full retail prices.
Other Recommendations
Fabletics and Joylab are also mentioned as affordable options, with Joylab being available at Target and praised for its inclusivity [5:2]
[5:3]. These brands provide a mix of affordability and style, catering to different preferences and needs in athletic wear.
Any recommendations for sportswear? Maybe not for life since a lot of clothes break but the most durable and good for value sportswear brands you guys know.
My Adidas socks keep on breaking while playing and one shirt from Nike costs $40+ these days which is kinda crazy if I want to buy a lot.
My own faves so far are Decathlon for general sporting equipment and Adidas shoes for football.
Patagonia, outdoor research, mammut, all of the outdoor brands will last longer than the sports marketed brands imo.
If we had a budget, that might help.
If we had a sport, that might help.
If we had a sex, that might help.
We have a search engine and for socks, we speak to that topic 4 times a week.
At ease
Below $40 shirts, but willing to spend more if higher quality. I was hoping to use in more of a general use since I go running, boxing, bouldering, and football. And something for men.
Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice on where to buy activewear and would love your recommendations.
I’m about to restart my fitness journey — I used to run and lift weights before — and I’m now looking for some good-quality activewear that I can use for both gym sessions and outdoor running. Ideally, I’d like to find a brand where I can get everything in one place (leggings, shorts, sports bras, and tops) that I can mix and match.
Right now, I’m considering Gymshark or Oner Active, but I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews, so I’m not 100% sure. For context: I live in the Caribbean, so it’s very hot outdoors, but gyms here are usually air-conditioned and pretty cool.
Sizing info: I’m 4’11”, 120lbs (goal is around 108lbs), 34” bust, 34” belly (widest part), 29” waist (smallest part), and 39” hips. Squat-proof leggings are a must, and I’m hoping to buy pieces that will actually last a while since I don’t often shop for clothes.
Would love to hear your favourite brands and any specific lines you recommend for my needs! Thanks in advance!
I loved PLAI Active. I bought their flares first to try as they have a petite length and loved them! I went back to get the shorts and leggings and they fit good and the most comfortable!!
If you're looking for a name brand, definitely those brands are very high on my list. Gymshark, in particular, is touch and go with some of their quality, but they always look good no matter what. The only issue I've literally ever had was that some leggings are thinner than others but if you go on YouTube before you buy them or if you're unaware of what the line you prefer as far as how they feel on your body then just hop on YouTube and look at a review and most people do a squat check. Gymshark, in particular, is really big on sponsoring influencers, so there's almost always a video even for their new stuff that's about to drop so that people know what they're getting. The reason I stick with them in particular is because of the customer service. The one time I had a concern about an item, they let me keep the item, which was still wearable and looked completely fine. They gave me a refund and a 30% off my next purchase. Obviously, I just went back and ordered a completely new set of something different because that's a place where I want to spend my money.
While gymshark is always having big sales, oner active feels a little bit more expensive to me. idk. I feel the stuff doesn't go on sale as much, and when it does, they dont restock as much, but ive never got items from them so I cant speak on quality.
One place I would definitely say to avoid is Alphalete. Their stuff is super high quality, and when they do sales, they do them big, which is huge because of the fact that their stuff is usually completely out of my price range. They typically have an amazing Black Friday and birthday sale, which you can get items for as low as $10 when they're typically like 80. I've never had an issue with quality from them, but the thing that sucks is if you ever have to deal with customer service. Like the last and only time I had to deal with their customer service made me never want to deal with the company ever again. Like if you ever have a issue with shipping or returns, it's going to make you so upset, and they are so flippant about keeping any patronage that you're never going to want to go back. I've seen people never get a refund for an item they sent back, and still have to pay for postage and shipping.
Thank you for being so detailed.
I live in the Caribbean so I definitely need good customer service because sometimes it costs me to return the stuff.
Oner and Gymshark look nice, so I’ll try to do some YouTube research and get them on the sales. Are there any channels you recommend in particular that are honest with the reviews?
I love Athleta personally. I have one pair of Buff Bunny legging and really like them.
Athleta is my JAM for squat friendly leggings =). Really like all their stuff
My best friend received her Oner active leggings with pet hair and stained with vaginal discharges. They refused to do a refund and said their products are always checked for quality..

Athletic Wear is a BROAD topic with many sub categories, and different brands creating different items for all different types of activities. Proper athletic wear is an intersection between form and function, ranging from the extremes of Athleisure to Alpine Climbing. Whether you are into hardcore sports, are a gym rat, or just want to be comfortable while looking like a gym rat, chances are if you are reading MFA, you want to look good while feeling good and performing well in what you wear.
For this reason, when you post a link to an item or brand, talk about what activity (or lack thereof) you recommend it for. This way we can have a searchable thread for users coming in looking for “gym”, “running”, “hiking”, or “netflix”.
Or more likely most people posting here won’t have read the above anyways and will post. But I tried.

Now I'm currently searching for cheap running gear that still holds up in terms of comfort and performance. I’m trying to stay active without breaking the bank, and I know there’s a lot of budget-friendly gear out there that gets the job done.
I’ve seen some options online, but I’d love to hear from others about what has worked well for you. Whether it’s affordable running shoes, breathable shirts, leggings, socks, or accessories like waist packs or armbands — I’m open to all suggestions.
Some brands I’ve been looking at include:
If you’ve found any great affordable running gear or know of lesser-known brands that offer solid performance for the price, please share!
For clothing the Kiprun range from Decathlon is excellent, the quality is as good as other brands which cost the double. Kalenji-branded stuff can be OK but overall not as good as Kiprun. I would hesitate before buying running shoes from Decathlon though, the only exception would be the Kiprun KD900.2 which is a well-reviewed tempo shoe.
The best approach for budget running shoes is usually not to go for the cheapest models in the range, but to buy the previous year's models on a discount. This can be hard if you're US size 9 like me, but if you have a small or very large foot then you can get some amazing deals.
Are you adverse to used? You can find lots of great quality brands for lightly used. I’ve sold a bunch of stuff only worn 1-3 times or NWT. IME the cheaper brands always disappoint including those you’ve listed.
I seconded this. A lot of my favorite pieces I've bought used on Poshmark.
Man all my own gear eventually gets to a point that I’m grossed out by wearing it even myself.
The idea of wearing someone else’s running attire kinda skeeves me out. Maybe I’m just smellier than the average person.
The Decathlon Kiprun branded stuff is really good.
Tip: buy nice brands secondhand on Poshmark or Mercari.
I’ve loved my Old Navy running shorts. No phone picked but a small zip pocket that holds keys and a gel or two. When they have sales you can find shorts for less than $15. My favorite running tank is from there too and I grabbed it for $7. They have tall lengths too which is great for me.
I love Decathlon/Kiprun. Mostly good quality for shorts. I’ve found it varies by style though.
TJ/TK Maxx can also be a treasure trove of good gear.
Don’t skimp on shoes-it’ll come back to get you later. Go with last season!
What is your favorite brand of athletic clothing and why? Bonus points if it’s affordable! 💅🏻💅🏻💅🏻
I like fabletics!!
Joylab I find it in thrift stores. It’s pretty phenomenal. https://www.wearecollins.com/work/joylab/ they are size inclusive https://shopjoylab.com/joylab-sports-bra/
This brand is sold at Target btw!
Darc sport
Yum
Vuori is really good for shorts but I'm not a fan of their tops
I’m looking to purchase some activewear and would like to filter out the fast fashion brands. What are some of your favorite quality activewear brands?? Thanks!
Oiselle is a good one
Girlfriend collective
Seconding Girlfriend Collective! Great brand.
I really like Zella and have found a bunch on TU that I bought for under $10.
I should add, I’ve also gotten athleta, sweaty Betty, and adidas on TU. They all tend to be a tiny bit pricier.
Athleta, Sweaty Betty, Onzie (RIP), Lorna Jane, Marika.
Hey everyone, Just wanted to know your thoughts on brands that sell affordable running clothes? Last thing I want to do is buy a pair of $80 Lulu lemon compression shorts. Thanks
Baleaf on Amazon..... Great shorts and shirts at a reasonable price.
I also really like this brand. I purchased a bunch of their shorts and really like them. They are comfortable and get the job done, color choices are also pretty good too!
Not exactly answering your question, but I’ve found high end brands of barely used or brand new athletic wear at thrift stores in high end neighborhoods. Usually at Target prices. But it can take a lot of digging through and patience til you find something.
To answer your Q — Baeleaf on Amazon has affordable athletic wear — $20 high waisted 5” yoga shorts with double pockets — mine are still going strong!
I buy mostly offbrand, cheap stuff.
Baleaf is a good brand for shorts.
For tech shirts, just find something cheap. I get mine on Amazon for around $10 and I can't remember the last time I had to replace one. They last forever and work just fine.
For socks, I bought a six pack of Gold Toe Tech socks a few years ago. I think it cost about $18 for 6 pairs. I wear them almost constantly and they still look like new. I have a few pairs of more expensive ones for really long runs or races, but I think they would be just fine for that as well.
For shoes, I just buy older models and rarely pay more than $70.
I have a Garmin Forerunner 35 that I bought for less than $100 a couple of years ago that does everything I want. I've put 55 miles on it this week and I think it still has a third of its battery left.
Kalenji
Decathlon has really good stuff no matter the sport.
Scrolled to bottom to add but you already beat me to it
Nike, Adidas, Under Armor, Reebok, Puma, etc.
I like Nike and Adidas
Target has some really nice athletic wear
The leggings I own have lasted 5+ years and seem to still have a good few years left in them.
And they were only 25 bucks
Target athletic wear is the only athletic wear I wear lol
wear
The only activewear you actively wear.
They also have amazing bedspreads.
Whatever's at TJ Maxx.
I don't pay full price for clothes that just get stanked up.
I hate to say it but Lululemon is comfy as fuck. It is crazy expensive but great.
Had a sibling that worked there and have multiple shorts plus some work slacks and love every piece of clothing I have from them.
Second this. The material is great and the cut is really good. They just feel a level above the average brands.
I’ve been shopping for a hoodie and was going to get american giant but based on your post think I might get luluemon instead!
I came here to comment this. I love them.
Discount
LADIES. I am in the market for new activewear. I am so far removed from my “gym rat” era and have zero interest in gymshark, alphalete, typical “lifting” activewear brands etc. etc. etc. These days, I am typically more into low impact pilates/yoga or calisthenics & plyometrics. I am seeking an activewear brand or recommendation that isn’t $100 per pair of leggings. I need to purchase, basically, a whole new closet of activewear and times are tough, dude, I can’t afford lululemon or alo. What affordable brands are we trusting these days? I care about comfortablity and “movability” more than I care about “slimming” or “compressing” materials and I just want cute colors or patterns. As much as I love all black all the time, I literally look like I only have one gym outfit lol. It is time for an upgrade. PlS Help!!!! I trust yall!!!
I get my activewear from Costco lol 😂
Kirkland brand activewear is so underrated.
Crz Yoga and Tj Maxx
Aoxjox is killing it lately too. Lovely fabrics, holding up to tons of washing, coordinating colors for the lines.
Wow, I’m looking at the CRZ brand website right now, and their sale items are shockingly affordable!
Costco!! Love the leggings they have
I only buy it when on sale! Can get a lot of activewear half off
Old Navy
I bought a two pairs of joggers from them for 5 each. They’re so incredibly comfy holy cow
I third CRZ yoga. I buy the CRZ YOGA Butterluxe Workout Tank Tops off Amazon and they are fabulous. I’ve worn them for years and they are such great quality. I love their leggings as well.
Second old navy!
I’ve been buying my activewear from them for over a decade and the quality is actually sooo good! Their kids and men’s stuff is great too!
Hello fellow runners! I am a 25F in the process of losing about 70 lbs, with 25 down so far.
To give some background, in the past I was in really good shape and considered myself to be a dedicated long distance runner (worked my way up to a half marathon). So basically, I know running is something I enjoy and am willing to invest in. I got what I assume to be a stress fracture, which got me out of the habit of running (and made me quite discouraged), and then some major life changes occurred, followed by COVID… blah, blah, blah… I gained a lot of weight.
I’ve recently picked running back up again because it’s made me so happy in the past, and even only being able to run 2 miles now, I’ve fallen back in love! So far my weight loss has been decently quick, so I’ve been reluctant to buy proper running clothes, because I’ll likely only be wearing them for a relatively short period of time.
However, summer is ending pretty soon and the weather gets pretty brutal (rain, snow, below freezing) where I live, so I know that soon, my old gym shorts and a t-shirt won’t cut it. Back in the day, I wore pretty high quality running gear, but that won’t fit me at my current size.
I’m wondering if anyone has any cheaper options that are weatherproof..? I have a newish pair of shoes that I’m very happy with, so mostly worried about clothing. Thanks!
Target has decent cheap active wear.
Not female like OP, but I really like the 5” men’s running shorts from Target. I waffled around getting shorts with liners because of how expensive shorts from a running brand can be so I opted for target ones and I ended buying 3 more pairs because I liked them and they’re inexpensive.
Agree. their women running shorts are a great buy. Pocket in the back.
The baleaf line of gear is pretty affordable. It’s quality enough that I run in it 4-5x per week!
Their bike shorts are great for running! I love the zipper pocket in the back.
I like their shirts as well. Cheap and good quality
Target and Old Navy have some really good athletic, wicking gear, and Old Navy is always having sales. Check stores like TJ Maxx as well. I also look at the clearance section at Running Warehouse quite a bit, and find some good deals there.
Old Navy is great. Their 8" powersoft shorts are so great. Soft, comfy and don't ride up or chafe.
I am a frugal person. I love second run stores like Ross and Marshalls as well as consignment and thrift stores. I understand not wanting used athletic wear; you will find new with tags stuff at these places all the time.
For harder to find specific items (like sleeveless hoodies or discontinued styles that you wish you had more of) try eBay or online retailers.
TJ Maxx tends to have a good variety of cheap running stuff. You might have to dig through racks a little but I’ve found some good leggings and shirts for cheap
This is the answer if you want name brand stuff. My wife and I hit up TJ Max’s and Marshall’s anytime we need new stuff. Lots of good deals usually.
Check online though first I’d say. the ones near me are all currently sold out in stores for running gear lol.
