What Redditors are Saying

Where to Buy Affordable Workout Equipment

TL;DR

  • Check online marketplaces like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and OfferUp.
  • Explore thrift stores, yard sales, and discount retailers such as Ross, Marshall's, and TJ Maxx.
  • Consider second-hand sports stores like Play It Again Sports.

Online Marketplaces

One of the most recommended places to find affordable workout equipment is through online marketplaces. Websites like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and OfferUp are popular choices for finding used gym equipment at a lower cost [1:2][2:1]. Many sellers may have multiple items they want to unload, so asking if they have other exercise equipment can lead to bundled deals [2:1].

Thrift Stores and Yard Sales

Thrift stores and yard sales are also great options for finding cheap workout gear. Estate sales can offer significant discounts on larger items like benches and squat racks [1:4][5:1]. Timing your purchases around New Year's resolutions or the end of garage sale season can yield good deals as people often sell unused equipment [1:1][5:6].

Discount Retailers

Discount retailers such as Ross, Marshall's, TJ Maxx, and HomeGoods frequently carry workout equipment at reduced prices [5:1]. Additionally, stores like 5 Below offer inexpensive options for basic workout gear [4:2][5:2].

Second-Hand Sports Stores

Play It Again Sports is a notable second-hand sports store where you can find pre-owned workout equipment. This store is particularly useful for those who prefer not to transport heavy weights frequently [3:3].

Adjustable Weights

Investing in adjustable dumbbells is another cost-effective option. They allow for progressive weight increases without needing to purchase multiple sets of dumbbells [4:3]. While some users express concerns about their weight compared to traditional dumbbells, they remain a popular choice for home gyms [4:6].

By exploring these various avenues, you can build an affordable home gym that suits your needs and budget.

Anybody know a good place to get cheap workout equipment? Specifically I’m looking for a bench, squat rack, bar, and ~200lbs of plates. Any ideas?

Craigslist, goodwill or Facebook marketplace would be good places to start. I bought a bunch of weight plates from there cheap. Also, check out if you have any discount exercise equipment places around you. Walmart is also not that bad for some equipment. The golds gym stuff is decent for a beginner and I think they have a kit with like 180 lbs of weight.

Used gym equipment is typically cheap enough. While we're at the end of garage sale season (at least in places that run on Memorial Day to Labor Day schedules), places like CL and Facebook are a good alternative. Just look for desperate people who are trying to clear out their basement after realizing they haven't touched those dumb bells in years.

In the meantime - are there any discount $10/mo gyms (like Planet Fitness) in your area. If you are not 100% you will keep using your new equipment for the long haul / don't want to commit a room in your house to store all of it / or simply might want more variety of equipment, these $10 gyms are pretty great for that.

A friend of mine just got a full rack of barbells and a bench for cheap from an estate sale, if you’re willing to wait it out that could be a good option.

The places have been mentioned here. Timing is also important (naturally outside of your basic setup). It's August now but put it in the bank. Lots of people decide to get in shape as a new years resolution. Usually around February a lot of cheap extra plates, or something to add cardio show up on Craigslist.

Second hand equipment websites such as Facebook Market Place and eBay, gumtree or if you can find a gym that's recently closed down or just selling equipment they usually sell it quite cheap

I got some basic weights from a local sports store on a sale. You can check FB market place as well, resistance bands on Amazon are pretty cheap as well.

My most expensive item would be a Stripper pole I ordered that was 200$.

But if you are creative you can also make your own weights at home. Gallon milk jug with sand or water for example.

I have found equipment on FB marketplace, craigslist, Offer Up, yard sales, goodwill (thrift store) and a pre-owned sports store called Play it Again Sports. A great question to ask private sellers when you contact them about the listing is " do you have any other exercise equipment for sale?" Lots of times they have a whole garage full of stuff they're trying to unload one piece at a time and you can get a great bundled deal price.

LPT: New to exercising? There’s a lot of good quality, affordable, used equipment in buy & sell communities

Posted by junktownexpress · in r/LifeProTips · 2 months ago

I don’t live near a gym, so developing a good exercise routine has been tough. I scored a few simple pieces of equipment in great condition for very cheap on a buy & sell app. This has made it convenient and affordable for me to incorporate exercising at home into my daily routine. There’s no way I would have bought the same equipment at full price, being unsure if I would use it in the long term.

Genuinely the best thing to do if you're looking to build a home gym is checking online marketplaces and garage/yard sales (and even family members).

Dad sold me his elliptical for $25. Which was funny given I was the one who helped him move it in and build it less then a decade before when he bought it for like $700

Bought an exercise bike off a marketplace post for $75.

Bought some adjustable dumbells (go up to 50lbs) at a yard sale for $35

And my aunt gave me her old bench for free.

For less than $200 I got a very solid starter gym in my basement.

Where can you find cheap workout equipment?

Hi, I just wanted to know if anyone knows good places to find cheap workout equipment. I have a set of dumbbells that go up to 15 lbs but that’s quickly starting to get too light. I could only really find dumbbells that were $1 per pound but that’s really expensive if you want a set. I make do without a bench but I figure a bench would be good as well for some dumbbell exercises.

Honestly, $1/lb is pretty standard nowadays it seems.

Your best bet is to just keep an eye out on local forums (craigslist, fb marketplace, etc) and see if you can snag something cheap. Or just invest in an adjustable set of dumbbells, which will be cheaper than buying a pair of each progressive weight.

Otherwise, get a gym membership. You'll get access to much more stuff for way cheaper than it would cost to buy (and store) it. It would at least give you an idea of what stuff you also need/want and how much weight you'd need to buy to get a solid workout at home.

ArchedRobin321 · OP · 2 months ago

Yeah, I actually have a gym membership but my transportation has been finicky lately and I feel like I can push myself more at home as well. I’ve heard of those adjustable dumbbells but I heard that they’re actually lighter than the regular ones. It might just be superstition though.

ArchedRobin321 · OP · 2 months ago

I will definitely still look into those adjustable weights, they are way less expensive! Are there any brands you recommend?

The most cost effective thing you can buy is a good set of standard plates with the corresponding barbell/dumbbells

You might try your local buynothing group and do an ISO - in search of. If you're not familiar, it's a FB group where people give stuff away. You have to join and then once approved, you can ask. The people in my group are very generous and I have seen workout equipment listed. If there isn't one in your city, you can try the next one over.

With exercise equipment, the general rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for. Read product reviews and when you find a promising option, see if you can find an independent video review of it on youtube.

Thrift stores have a surprising amount of home workout equipment.

Posted by Knightraiderdewd · in r/workout · 2 months ago

Just something I’ve found and thought it might help anyone having trouble affording equipment for a home gym.

I just prefer working out at home, and have found some of my most used equipment at my local thrift store for relatively cheap.

To be fair a lot of it is mismatched, if you care about that, but I’ve not only saved money, but got some pretty good stuff like dumbbell weights and ab rollers.

I have been collecting all the instruments under my home roof since 2018. I searched all of Nashik for good and reasonable equipment. However, the basic equipment in the city starts at the mid range of online equipment. The online ones have return policy except the delivery charge so you can try the online one. I purchased dumbles set and weight plates alongwith rod, tricep as well as curl one online which are non PVC in 2018, then in 2020 I purchased a pull up bar, more weight plates (PVC ones this time 👎) and mattress. In 2022 searched for a bench extensively in the city but the search concluded to amazon(purchased online) Recently, I bought a boxing bag through my friend who now resides in Rohtak which is amazing and at very reasonable price. My suggestion BUY ONLINE for daily and beginner to moderate workout.

Pretty pricey to buy pretty much anywhere, so I've always just looked second hand. You may have luck reaching out to some of the smaller gyms and/or fitness influencers and see if they have equipment they are looking to offload.

Purchasing affordable gym equipment company/ brand/ site recommendations

You want to buy used commercial equipment from stores that went under or schools that are being rebuilt. I bought over 100k worth of gym equipment for about 8k. Including a full 5-130lb iron grip db set with racks. Which retails for about 30k nowadays.

You do this via Craigslist and Facebook market place. Checking it every hour.

I started with an 800$ rack from Amazon. I put it together, realized it was shit, sold it for 700 and the went and picked up a used hammerstrength rack for 350$ lol. Retails for like 3k. Came with an adjustable HS bench.

You want life fitness, hammer strength, iron grip, cybex, free motion, and a handful of other brands. Don’t waste money on anything else.

Where to buy affordable workout equipment

Key Considerations for Buying Affordable Workout Equipment:

  1. Online Retailers: Websites like Amazon, Walmart, and Target often have competitive prices and a wide selection. Look for sales or discounts, especially during holiday seasons.

  2. Second-Hand Options: Check platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or OfferUp for gently used equipment. You can often find great deals from people looking to sell their unused gear.

  3. Discount Stores: Stores like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, or Ross often carry workout equipment at reduced prices. Inventory can vary, so visit regularly for the best finds.

  4. Local Sporting Goods Stores: Sometimes, local stores have clearance sections or seasonal sales. Don’t hesitate to ask about discounts on floor models or last year's stock.

  5. Warehouse Clubs: If you have a membership, places like Costco or Sam's Club can offer good deals on bulk purchases or sets of equipment.

  6. Sales Events: Keep an eye out for sales events like Black Friday, New Year’s sales, or end-of-season clearances, which can offer significant discounts.

Recommendation: Start by checking online retailers for the best deals, and don’t overlook second-hand options for quality equipment at a fraction of the price. Always compare prices across different platforms to ensure you’re getting the best deal.
