Best Build for Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

TL;DR

  • Strength and Faith builds are popular with lightning damage synergy [2:1].
  • Bleed-focused builds like Nagakiba are viable but require careful stat allocation [5:1].
  • Experiment with different weapon classes available in the DLC [2:3].

Strength and Faith Builds

Strength combined with Faith offers a versatile build, especially with the new DLC content. Players have recommended focusing on lightning damage using Clawmark Seal and Death Knight equipment, which synergize to boost both weapon and spell damage [2:1]. This build provides consistent thematic elements while enhancing damage output, making it one of the more reliable setups for tackling the DLC.

Bleed-Focused Builds

For those interested in bleed mechanics, switching from a strength-based build to a bleed-focused setup like Nagakiba can be effective. It's crucial to balance your stats between Dexterity and Arcane to maximize bleed damage and utility [5:1]. Occult infusion is recommended for its ability to scale physical damage with Arcane, although it doesn't allow weapon buffs [5:3]. Keen infusion paired with Bloodflame Blade can offer optimal damage but may feel cumbersome to some players.

Exploring New Weapon Classes

The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion introduces new weapon classes that can significantly impact your playstyle. Early areas in the DLC provide access to weapons like Great Katana and Milady, which can be tailored to various builds [2:3]. These weapons are versatile and can adapt to multiple infusions, allowing players to experiment with status effects or pure damage outputs [2:6].

General Tips for Build Optimization

Regardless of your chosen build, there are general strategies to enhance your gameplay experience. Prioritize Vigor early to ensure survivability and consider starting with single-stat builds before branching into dual-stat setups at higher levels [3:2]. Utilize ranged attacks when possible, as they can provide significant advantages against certain enemies [3:3]. Additionally, exploring different skill paths like Chronomancer or Monk styles can offer unique abilities and playstyles [4:1], [4:2].

By considering these options and experimenting with different setups, you can optimize your build for the challenges presented in Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.

What’s your level and your build? When I started the DLC I was lvl 150 playing as a str/dex/arc build. The BIGGEST thing is getting the scadutree fragments. Those actually boost your attack and defense power. You can level that up to level 20 and that is really how your weapons do a lot of damage. I also respec’d to more intelligence instead of arcane and I got some really good results from that!

Honestly bleed is a hard build to have in the DLC. That’s why I changed to Str/Dex with a slight focus on faith. But those scadutree fragments are HUGE. Hunt those bad boys down and you will mow down bosses. To fight radahn, you’ll need a scadu level of 19-20.

Do you use any of the apps with the maps? They will have the locations of all the scadutree fragments!

Hi everyone, last year i played the base game a lot, completed it with almost all main playstyles, so completely used to it. My most favorite ones were arcane and str/faith builds. I like playing from scratch anytime i try a new build, to personally feel it in a bit more hollistic way.

Anyway, now i have some time and i just purchased expansion SOTE and thus will restart playing elden ring. Want to try to finish also SOTE with various builds (capped at rl 150).

Would very much like it of you guys can give me some weapon/build ideas completely focused on sote that i can try.

Not asking for details (of course would love it) but more like which weapon/playstyle would match and be a nice combo (no need for op obviously).

Thanks a lot already.

In the very first area of SotE you can get a LOT of solid weapons that are in the new DLC weapon classes. I'd pick one of them and build around that. Great Katana & Milady are my favorites - backhand blades, black steel greathammer, & beast claws would be great options too.

Would katana/milady suit more to an arcane build or strength/faith, in your opinion?

Katana is more dex/arcane. MiLady is insanely versatile. It works equally as well on almost all infusions, but it's multi-hit moveset does push anything with status buildup a bit higher.

Strength+Faith has loads of good options in the DLC; can try out a specialized lightning damage build with Clawmark Seal + Death Knight equips, they're all very solid IMO. It's one of the builds that has the best mix of consistent theming and simultaneous damage-boosting synergy (all of the Death Knight armor pieces boost lightning damage for both your weapons and your spells)

Build making + tips for new player

Posted by Beranir · in r/LordsoftheFallen · 4 months ago

I just bought the game on ps5 in a sale. Im very casual enjoyer of souls genre, I only really finished Elden Ring + DLC and Bloodborne and I dont really care about not using summons or OP stuff, I use what ever I need to beat the boss hehe, thats why I say casual enjoyer.

I just wanted to ask about build making. I looked what type of build is popular and powerfull and saw strenght + radience. Ok big sword and spells sounds awesome, but how should I prioritize? In bloodborne its allways get your main dmg stat to 25, than go for vitality and/or endurance, than main dmg stat to 50 and than the rest is kinda up to you. How is it here? does game have some kind of caps like bloodborne and ER?

And of course as a new player Im open to all tips and tricks you could recommend, without any spoilers of course.

The generally agreed advice is to get your vigor to at least 20 right away. Maybe even higher.

Then me personally I suggest starting with a single stat build and waiting until high level to try duel stat builds.

I found a straight radiance build very strong for my first playthrough, especially once you find the Mana regen rune and ring.

1 upvotes on reddit
Crusaderofthots420 · 4 months ago

Most builds are plenty powerful, there are very few "wrong choices". However, I have general tips that apply to all builds, which you can combine with any recommended builds in the other comments.

First of all, never forget you have a ranged weapon, even without spells. The ability to always have a ranged weapon available is a massive boon, especially with status ammo.

Secondly, try to block as much as you dodge. Unlike in classic soulsborne, chip damage from blocking with weapons isn't as big an issue, since you can regain that damage by attacking.

Thirdly, armor does matter. This isn't DS3, wearing heavy armor can give you sizeable damage reduction, especially against elemental damage and status effects.

For first playthrough I would focus on one dmg stat. If u like big sword Bloody glory is excelent Grand sword. Requires 20 str/32 rad, but scales mainly with Rad. Its excelent Choice for Full radiance build and u get not only top tier melee dmg, but Also strong magic and heals. U only need 4 stats - Str 20, vit 40, end 20, rad 75. Rest u Can put wherever u want. str - more phys dmg, end - more stamina, equip load, Inf - more mana. Or u Can Also add agil to meet base requirements for other great rad weapons like judge cleric Spear or pietas sword.

Beranir · OP · 4 months ago

ok I will have one question, I heard that str + rad is good build combo, but I dont really know what exactly is rad playstyle. Is it mainly buffing? mainly spell casting? What is the gameplay with rad?

1 upvotes on reddit
Gurru222 · 4 months ago

If u use Bloody glory, its the same as str playstyle , but u get stronger buffs and spells. My 1st playthrough was pure str as in every souls game, and I have to say, rad is way stronger. If u use mana regen ring and rune, u Can keep 100% uptime of radiant weapon buff.

Gear: holy dmg amulet, holy dmg ring + mana regen ring.

Bloody glory - 2 orimon runes, 1 gravix - this one increases Also holy dmg, dont mind the description

Light reaper Shield on the back with 1 nartun + 2 tumul. With this setup u have strong mana regen and u barely use any normal heals. Red reaper is Also not problem.

If u want more dmg, switch Shield for jeffreys dagger with 3x gravix and mana ring for two handed dmg ring.

One last important thing is Umbral eye of loash which makes u almost imortal.

1 upvotes on reddit
Glass-Grapefruit3990 · 4 months ago

Ok hear me out, as long as you don't try for an umbral magic build in the beginning, bc that requires both radiance and inferno and if you like big swords then it adds strength into the mix. However if you ask me any "element" is worth it, I've seen radiance and inferno be great, I personally like umbral. I'm also a casual player i upgrade whatever I want, play how I want, and these souls elitist can suck a fat 1. I also like to switch it up so I always go for a rounded character knowing I'm probably going to play the game multiple times per character. My 1st 2 characters were a throwing and an umbral magic user. I've also make characters for each "range" based on its "element". On my thrower I did a bleed build and on my bow I'm doing a poison build. Really just find a build you like and enjoy the game. There really isn't a wrong answer on this game, it's not as hard as the souls games.

1 upvotes on reddit
Abject_Muffin_731 · 4 months ago

This game is way easier than Elden Ring + DLC so if u can beat that ur fine. Just run whatever interests you. If you really want the strongest build in the game then yea its radiance, flickering flail and lucent beam specifically.

The notable soft cap in this game for damage stats is 45. No need to push beyond that. 20-30 health stat is fine. Stamina depends on ur weapon as usual

1 upvotes on reddit

Beranir · OP · 4 months ago

I heard its not as hard which is ok, since Im not chasing the high of banging my head against boss for three weeks to finally beat it. I used mimic tear, moonlight greatsword and I was not holding back on my levels. The only thing I never did was get another players help, mostly because I dont have ps+ but lets say it was principle :)

Man I am just loving trying out builds in this game! Personally I’m really enjoying the Chronomancer skill path with the Clockwork Blade to boost my abilities during Timeshift. Also really enjoying a monk playstyle using Brawlers Gauntlets and imbuing them with different elements depending on my needs. What kind of builds are you guys running?

Every ds game I’ve gone for 2 handed strength builds so this game I was like I’m gonna do something different. After accidentally finding the Shade Sabre in those ruins in the Looming Wood I fell in love. Not only does it do dark damage (which is super useful against the Angelicals in the citadels) but the ability to teleport behind an enemy’s shadow that you are targeting is so so op. In PVP it’s even crazier because nobody has caught on to how good this thing is. Calling it now, within two weeks everybody will be wearing the Fallen Halo to negate dark damage.

I think getting rekt by stonetinge R1 spammers in PVP has really put me off the build, how do you counter that shit

yyzable · 5 years ago

The best success I've had against Stonetinge spammers is with a Hunter bow build. Gathir's Bow (the one that shoots three arrows at once) and the Ring of Feathers (increased firing rate) usually kills 'em before they can get to you but the bow is an ultra rare drop and getting the ring means you don't get the third silver orb.

I'm intrigued about how my Sword Priestess build will do against them though.

Best Nagakiba Bleed Build for the DLC? (Switching from a Guts STR Build on NG+4/5)

Posted by FirstHighFlyer · in r/EldenRingBuilds · 1 month ago
post image

Hey everyone,

I'm getting ready to dive into Shadow of the Erdtree and decided it's time for a big change. I've been running a Strength/dex build with the Guts Greatsword for my entire journey so far, but now I'm planning to respec into a fast, bleed-focused build using the Nagakiba.

I'm on NG+4 (or maybe +5, I honestly can't remember) and since I'm coming from a Strength background, I'd love some help optimizing this new setup from scratch. I'll be attaching a screenshot of my current stats for reference.

My goal is to create the most powerful Bleed/Hemorrhage build possible, but with one key constraint: I don't want to do a ton of complex side quests for new gear. I'd prefer a build using items that are relatively easy to get or that I likely already have from the base game, so I can just focus on playing through the DLC content.

I'd love to get your advice on the following:

  • Stat Allocation: What would be the optimal stat spread for this high NG+ level? I'm guessing a lot of Vigor is a must, but how should I balance Dexterity and Arcane for maximum bleed and damage output?
  • Ash of War / Affinity: I'm set on using Double Slash. With that in mind, what's the best affinity to use on the Nagakiba? Should I go with Occult (so it scales with Arcane and I can buff it with Bloodflame Blade), or is a straight Blood infusion more effective for this setup?
  • Talismans: Which talismans synergize best with Double Slash's rapid hits? I'm thinking Lord of Blood's Exultation, of course, but also Millicent's Prosthesis and the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia. Are these the best choices to maximize the successive attack damage?
  • Off-hand Weapon: Should I be dual-wielding another katana (like an Occult Uchigatana) for more pressure, or would it be better to use a seal like the Dragon Communion Seal in my off-hand for buffs?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

You can’t use blood flame blade (or any weapon buff) on an Occult infused weapon.

If you want to maximize damage, Keen + BFB will be the most optimal damage but I find BFB clunky.

Occult affinity can’t take weapon buffs, but will be a good balance of damage because the arcane scaling it gives will cause Arcane to scale your physical damage as well as boost the damage of your bleed props

1 upvotes on reddit
Moist_Ad_6868 · 1 month ago

What's the armor you're wearing?

1 upvotes on reddit
Zippywin · 1 month ago

(You can't run Bloodflame Blade on Occult)

  • Stat Allocation: This depends on whether you run Quality + BFB, Occult or Blood. I don't think Quality + BFB offers much leeway for scaling. Blood is slightly stronger than Occult, but I prefer Occult as it offers much more in the form of spells and AoWs to help support your build. Blood is likely stronger without sacrificing support at 250+.
    • 57 Vigor
    • 18 Mind
    • 25 Endurance (assuming you're keeping your current drip + some leeway)
    • 18 Strength
    • 22 Dexterity
    • - Intelligence
    • 28 Faith
    • 80 Arcane
    • 24 spare stat points:
      • Faith for much better incantation damage (43 is a softcap, then arcane)
      • Dexterity for better Nagakiba damage (40 is a softcap, then arcane)
      • Vigor (up to 60)/Mind/Endurance for QoL.
  • Talismans: For damage, order of importance: Shard of Alexander > Lord of Blood's Exult > RWSI > Millicent's.
    • Highly recommend a defensive/utility talisman over one or more of these, notably Dragoncrest Greatshield.
    • Swap out Lord of Blood if opponent doesn't bleed.
    • Don't ever run Radagon's lmao
  • Off-hand Weapon: I might have hinted at it already, but Dragon Communion Seal is probably your best option, as buffs are the best option to scale damage/defense when softcaps are reached. I chose 28 faith because of Golden Vow, with access to Greyoll's Roar if you need it. You can even cast regular incantations with great spell scaling, comparable to dedicated faith builds.
    • It also weighs nothing, so nothing's stopping you from running another Occult weapon - perhaps a ranged sidearm running Blood Blade or Spectral Lance, or if you want to powerstance, Braggart's Roar on Occult Uchi.

Leveling up your strength and dexterity is fine, but early on you're going to want to prioritize upgrading your weaponry. Also it's super super important to level vigor. You're going to want at least 50 vigor by the end of the game.

Also Elden Ring is an open world game (I'm sure you know) but there are barriers to that you have to deal with. If you're in the Siofra River at level 18, you've gone a bridge too far. I'd turn back. You can generally know when you need to turn back when you're absolutely getting your ass kicked with no hope of doing any ass kicking yourself.

Anything made of crystal doesn't like strike type damage, so find a weapon that does that. Should say what kind of damage it does just below the name in the menu. Or you could just eyeball it. Strike type weapons are generally clubs or hammers or what have you.

Might be a bit early for siofra river at level 18. That early you should only meet the minimum weapon requirements in dex and str and concentrate on vigor and some endurance. Weapon upgrades help you a lot more at that point than leveling up dex and str so don't worry about those stats yet.

It looks like u r leaning towards a flame(faith) build. If u r gonna main the blasphemous blade then I would suggest only leveling up strength and faith apart from of course ur vigour and endurance. Ur spells purely scale with faith so it should complement ur build well. However using a flame build will probably give u a very hard time when tackling a boss in the 2nd half of the game. So I suggest investing in a purely strength weapon for that fight or one that does holy cuz holy scales with faith too. Also side note, blasphemous blade only can be leveled up to lvl 10 max i believe as it uses somber smithing stones to level up and not the normal stones. Oh yeah, level up mind too to have more fp to use ur AoW on blasphemous blade more.

Guys, I am undecided about my final build of my character, at the moment I have a build where I can use everything in the game, but I never use sorceries and things that scale on arcane.

I ONLY HAVE ONE LARVA TEAR LEFT (Maybe I missed some from the DLC but I'm not sure).

At the moment, I have no intention of starting NG+6, since I'm taking a break from Elden Ring until the release of NIGHTREIGN.

So, I would like a STRENGTH - DEXTERITY - FAITH build. So you can use both heavy swords and katanas. Im LVL. 300, Is there any good man who knows how to build me my final build with a very high attack rate? Thanks in advance.

There are some weapon options that may be worth considering. From the base game the Blasphemous Blade, Maliketh's Black Blade, and the Sword of Night and Flame would work well for your build. There are a lot of options from the DLC- black steel greathammer, devonia's hammer, fire knight greatsword, shadow sunflower blossom, anvil hammer, rellana's twinblades, any of the smithscript weapons. Lots of DLC weapons reward overlevelling with three or four stats for scaling. Scaling four stats at D is relatively weak at RL 150 but you can get a base AR over 900 on NG + 6 or 7.

3 upvotes on reddit
whatthefoxsees · 4 months ago

There’s nothing too difficult about that. You’re Level 300, as you say. We don’t know your starting class, but even if it were Wretch, you could go VIG 60 MIND 19 END 40 STR 80 DEX 80 INT 10 (or whatever your base Int was) FAI 80 ARC 10 (or whatever the starting number was).

If you want more Mind or Endurance, you take points away from Str, because you can still cross 80 Str as long as you have at least 54 Str and you two-hand your weapon.

That’s it really.

Zeons21 · 4 months ago

This is a very solid advice, anything different would be down to preference

For example, id go with a str/fth/bleed build which is the build above but dropping str to 54 and a bit of dex to pump arc to 45. The extra damage bleed provides is quite good.

What was the starting class that you chose?

If it was Vagabond, at level 300 you should be able to have this stat spread:

60 Vigor 34 Mind 45 Endurance 70 Strength 70 Dexterity 10 Intelligence 80 Faith 10 Arcane

If you are higher level than 300, put your remaining levels into Strength and Dexterity to reach 80 on both. Then level Intelligence so you can also use weapons that scale with both Faith and Intelligence, such as Rellanas Twinblades.

Since you are scaling both Strength and Dexterity, I assume you are sticking more to a Quality/Faith build, so I prioritized your Faith scaling over Strength or Dexterity individually. This is to keep your armament options versatile while still maintaining high incantation scaling.

Your Incantation Seal will obviously be the Erdtree Seal, unless you are prioritizing specific types of spells. Make use of Golden Vow and Flame Grant me Strength to keep your damage high, as the latter also boosts physical damage even without a fire weapon. Also use the Greenspill Crystal Tear in your Physick to keep your Stamina topped off so you can deal as much DPS as possible. Your other crystal tear is a matter of preference, but I usually use an element shrouding tear, like flame, lightning, or holy.

For your weapons, I would recommend sticking to a Fire weapon and a Holy damage weapon, both of which will scale the most with your stats. The Banished Knight Greatsword scales well with both Strength and Dexterity, and also has a very fancy scabbard. Its moveset is also buttery smooth. It’s definitely one of my favorite weapons though so I’m a little biased. I’ve also had a lot of fun with weapons like the Death Knight Longhaft Axe or Devonia’s Hammer, but options like the Blasphemous Blade and Messmer’s Spear are always gonna be stronger. Fire is just so damn strong. If you are using a Holy weapon, have the Sword of Light on hand in order to use its skill like a Flame Grant Me Strength buff but for Holy damage. The Euporia Twinblade would be a great contender for a Holy weapon, as it scales evenly with Strength and Dexterity and the most with Faith, which would align with your stats. It’s also much stronger than when the DLC launched. as it has received some buffs.

As for your armor, you can wear whatever fashion you like, but I’ve loved using the Death Knight set, Tree Sentinel set, Cleanrot set, Malenia’s set, Night Maiden armor with Nox set, and Leda’s Armor with Oathseeker set for Faith builds. Rakshasa’s Armor is also OP, but everyone and their mother uses that.

Talismans are really gonna depend on what weapons you use the most, but I generally run with the Shard of Alexander, Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman, Two headed Turtle Talisman, and then my flex slot is either Crimson Seed Talisman +1, Godfrey Icon, Rellanas Cameo, an elemental scorpion talisman, Talisman of the Dread (for Blasphemous Blade), or Bullgoat Talisman.

The only thing I would add is that 13 int opens the door to discus of light, probabñy the best spammable spell in the whole game.

Not easiest but fun and pretty good, like if the build is really good and fun but you have to stay close range the whole time or some that’s fine

Great omenkiller cleaver, cold wild strikes ash. You can even get multiple in one playthrough without trading for powerstancing fun, they drop from the enemies in atlus or volcano manor. Hit mins to use early, pump vigor, some endurance and maybe mind, then slam STR. Very few normal attacks will break your poise so you can kinda just push out a ton of damage and mow through mobs. https://youtu.be/m--acF6y_xM

After defeating both Malenia & Elden beast multiple times, I would say Stoneshield + Thrusting sword (Blood) is the most broken/ easy build for this game

Add in Swarm of Flies and you will be invincible vs any boss

where can i follow a build like this? https://preview.redd.it/j17ir3njpjp81.png?width=1014&auto=webp&s=355c0c19ee0904918cf0a9db222c8e92f17592dd is this similar?

Yeah, but IMO, Thrusting sword or heavy thrusting sword are better since you can apply seppuku on both of them

Personally I prefer the fastest weapon which is the rapier (Cleanrot knight sword). The bleed will be your main source of damage

Which thrusting sword would you recommend?

Cleanrot Knight Sword scale with Str. You will have 48str to use Stoneshield anyway

Blood Arc build. Get Rot Breath and Dragon Seal. Start warrior and use scimitars till you get elanoras, use elanoras till you get rivers. Rot breath with trivialize half the game, blood loss will trivialize the back half of the game.

There is no "best build", every build reach a point where you say "Fuck I wish I had X instead of being Y".

For a build to not suck, however, try focusing on one or two stats from "STR, DEX, INT, FTH, ARC", that will dictate weapons you can use and normal weapons can be infused with an "Ash of War" you like and infuse for the stats of your choice.

Don't spread your stats too wide, and never forget to pump vigor, endurance, only to be able to avoid fat roll with your gear of choice.

10 normal weapons can be upgraded to +25 per game cycle.

8 somber weapons can be upgraded to +10 per game cycle.

What's the best build?

I need to git gud, I've been molested by everything in the lands between. I can't hurt anything I Inflict less damage than a gummy bear. I'm not new to the souls games ‏but I don't like playing and throwing my points around and getting close to the monsters is scary.

I usually two hand the strongest str weapon I have, and level life, end, and str in all souls games. I use no shields. Use heavy infusion for more str scaling. Level up the weapon of course.

That's a reliable way but it's boring. I like being light and rolling 83839 times and do sick combos

LoFiChillin · 3 years ago

Sounds like you wanna play from range, so a mage build most likely. There are various bosses tho that basically render that playstyle completely useless. I suggest just practicing. You also prob inflict no damage at all because either you haven't upgraded your weapons and/or you're very early in the game.

What’s your level? And current stats. And starting class.

And a tip: the best stats in the world won’t mean shit if you don’t know how to use em. At the same time, you can beat the game at level 1 if you’re good enough.

True maybe what I was looking for is something like the easiest build to master. I'm probably level 8 wretch 16 vigor 12 strength and everything else is 10

Rom_ulus0 · 3 years ago

LMAO bro you're a level 8 wretch of course everything is slamming you. Every other class STARTS at like 14. Just go Vigor/Strength/Faith and grab the Claymore from Castle Morne.

You can jump attack and Lions Claw everything to death pretty easily then.

I’ve been having a lot of fun with flame of the redmanes ash of war, 2-3 breaks poise on most things. I’m doing arcane/dex, have it on the mesirecorde and Kept vig low with the assassins talisman that gives health back in criticals. Just beat redmane double boss battle at lvl 40 coMpared to the lvl 80 it took me on my first play through.

I felt a similar way, again, practice helps. There are also various points where the game wants you to pause, explore the open world, and level up before tackling the main path again. That’s what I had to do for stormveil. Cant play it like dark souls or sekiro unfortunately.

Arcane build lvl arcane to 60-80. Use bleed infusion. When boss is resistant to bleed infuse weapons with occult to gain more physical dmg. Overall arcane and vigor are too best stats in this game. Try to use double katanas or double curved swords. Double twinblade are very good too. Running r1 and jump attacks Procs bleed instantly. Use dragon communion seal for blood incantations and dragon spells. Rotten breath is a way to go. Blood spells are late game spells. Try to find Eleonora’s poleblade, rivers of blood, nagakiba, scavengers curved swords, godskin peeler, Mohgwyn spear. Top tier weapons. Also Reduvia dagger with insane ranged weapon art will melt annoying bosses like godskins, hell any boss without bleed immunity. Dagger can be found in starting area at lvl 1! Don’t forget to raise mind to 20 at least for early mid game you are gonna spam that l2 a lot on each weapon. Bleed is very fun in pve, trust me.
