TL;DR
Bloodhound's Fang
Bloodhound's Fang is frequently mentioned as a top weapon choice due to its versatility and power. It has excellent dexterity scaling, making it a favorite for dex builds [3:2]. The weapon's Ash of War, Bloodhound's Finesse, allows for quick repositioning and delivers powerful attacks, which can be particularly effective against bosses
[3:10]. Players appreciate its ability to stagger enemies and its general utility throughout the game
[3:1].
Uchigatana
The Uchigatana is another weapon that receives high praise, especially for dexterity builds. It's noted for its balanced moveset and respectable damage output, making it a reliable choice from early to mid-game [4:9]. Many players have completed the game using the Uchigatana, highlighting its effectiveness across various encounters
[5:9].
Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear and Blasphemous Blade
Despite recent nerfs, the Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear and Blasphemous Blade continue to be popular among players. The Sacred Spear is valued for its bleed build-up and area-of-effect capabilities, while the Blasphemous Blade is appreciated for its healing properties and strong Ash of War [1:6],
[4:9].
Dual Curved Swords
For those seeking high DPS, dual curved swords with a lightning infusion are recommended. This setup benefits from rapid attack damage enhancements and offers one of the highest DPS outputs without relying on status effects [5:1].
Other Notable Mentions
Several other weapons are highlighted for their unique attributes and strengths. The Claymore is praised for its well-rounded nature, being a staple in the Souls series [4:12]. The Magma Wyrm Scalesword offers both physical and fire damage, making it a versatile choice for strength and faith builds
[3:3]. Additionally, the Guardian Swordspear and Bolt of Gransax are noted for their effectiveness in dexterity builds, providing mobility and significant damage potential
[5:7].
With the recent nerfs to Blasphemous Blade and Dark Moon Greatsword, what do y’all think is the new best weapon in the game? I think star fist and Mohgwyn sacred spear are insanely good at the moment. For DLC weapons I’ve been enjoying the Milady and Rellana’s twin blades.
Had quality build 70 70 (616 AR) with Winged Sword Insignia + Millicents Prosthesis + Thorny Tear. The DPS is insane. On bigger enemies with long stagger animations and recover I basically try to stance break them and then instead of critical hit I just spam R1 and they just melt away.
I managed to beat the final boss in just 8 attempts. The first 6 was with a greatshield great katana, the last two was with Bloodfiend arm spamming R2. That weapon is something else.
I've beaten the dlc with this weapon, I have also utilized blind spot as a dodge + damage on the final chain of hit combo from bosses.
This boss pissed me the FUCK off last night and after I beat it I grabbed the weapon and went to bed immediately. I haven’t found a str/fai weapon I’ve wanted to use since the hammer. I’m definitely trying this one.
Devonia's Hammer/Black Steel Greathammer and Death Knight's Longhaft Axe were my favorite new weapons to use, alongside my mainstay Siluria's Spear
I was Scadutree Level 15 fighting it, and it died in like seven Blasphemous Blade L2s.
Not seven per healthbar, mind you, seven total. Such a goated weapon.
Yeah I feel like bleed builds will always get you more DPS though. Maybe it’s good as an infuse weapon for spellsword builds, haven’t tried that yet. I do like it against mobs but there are better weapons that can do both bleed/ frost on bosses with no buff required.
Spent a while using the, but then I found the Venomous claws and fell in love for my arcane build. I was using rotbreath from the dragons, then proccing poison and bleed off the claws. Dummy good.
It Is even strong enough to still deal dmg to holy resistant bosses with the Ash of war, goated weapon
Moist critical used these with cragblade in his dlc run and he wouldn't listen to his chat when they said the star fists were a huge chunk of the reason why he found the dlc so easy.
But really, a weapon with charged attacks that have the poise damage of a collosal weapon at 3x the speed and bleed ontop of that? Of course it's op.
I like to play the game somewhere in the middle difficulty level. I wanted to try out fist weapons so I used the star fist and after 2 bosses I realized that they are quite literally the best weapon in the game so I stopped using them. It wasn't fun anymore
All day! Don’t need a heal when your charged R2 comes out that fast and you stagger everything all the time. Yeah their range takes some getting use to on some bosses, but even if star fists weren’t super strong already they have bleed!
Lightning infused dryleaf gauntlets.
Not because of their stats, but because now you've turned into Heihachi from Tekken and therefore are the superior specimen by default
Should be in instead of axe of godfrey due its S scaling in strength. Axe of godfrey is more of a quality weapon than pure strength
The sword ive had with me since day one. Lordsworn straight sword. It has yet to fail me once
Best choice. Add "Quality" with "Sacred blade" ontop of that and you have my Dex/strg/faith build.
This weapon never disappointed in any way possible. It hits hard, has great reach, looks good, it has great poise damage, and it is the best straight sword for me.
Throw storm blade on that bad boy and punish from ranged also. Still melts bosses at NG +7
It counts as a strength and arcane weapon, right? It has decent strength scaling too
Right, OP left out the best weapon in the game
I honestly don’t understand the hype, it does less damage than the greatsword and it’s ash of ear does less damage than the blasphemous blade’s aow
Straight swords carried me through most of my first play through. Plus, the moveset for power-stanced straight swords is pretty fucking cool.
I got ahold of that thing yesterday and equipped it just to see it's move set and AoW. After like 30 seconds I decided this was going to be my NG+ weapon. The charged heavy is cool af
Been some of the most reliable weapons in every souls game. In DS3 a longsword with stance and a 100% neg weapon art shield could counter pretty much any other build in the game. Sadly I forsook the classic in elden ring when I first started cause PvP balancr was horrendous at first but maybe I'll give it another try.
I feel that way about the Claymore but it carries a sense of notoriety since everyone has loved it for a decade now lol. But yes straight swords are always fantastic.
I’m hoping they improve the two quality builds in str/dex and especially int/fai with more weapons, better scaling, or even new elements to improve said scaling. I love quality in Dark Souls, whether I’m using any and every weapon or any and every spell. I miss the days of hexing and pyromancies running off both, then altering my weapon to go that route too
Theyre straight up invincible. Got max rank in arena with this and carian retaliation/golden parry medium shield. SS S combo has always been meta. No other build is anywhere as strong if you play it right. Having perfect frames that also parry magic and another that is a damn aoe ranged parry on a medium shield, thats both faster and lasts longer than a buckler is just stupid.
Went on a 27 game winning streak until i saw a dual whip user and fought bleed builds and frost builds all day, not a single one was a hard fight.
Medium shields due to carian and golden is too broken and honestly needs a nerf. But since no one js using jt it never will be nerfed lol, which is good for its users. Lordsworn has amazing moveset, range and also a 1.1x crit modifier which stacks with ERs hornet ring the assassin talisman.
For all the broken stuff people call bleed is and RoB they have never once been actually strong in PvP.
Fang dex scaling is absurd. You get the talisman that reduces skill fp costs early enough you spam the shit out of its bonkers weapon skill.
I love this weapon so damn much. I play it in NG+
Same - first playthrough and I've been using BF since I got it (thank you Blaidd). BUT I just recently received and switched over to the Magma Wyrm Scalesword. It has both physical and fire damage and scales at 'C' in both strength and faith. Downside is it's quite a bit heavier (I'm still at medium load but just barely).
Could be the best. Others have higher damage against certain enemies but Bloodhound fang has no weakness and can be greased.
Agreed on there. While I don't think the Fang is the best weapon in the game, it makes a very solid argument as best on a first playthrough, or best general weapon.
-Hits hard enough to cause staggering
-Okay whether two-handed or with a shield
-Somber weapons are more easily upgraded before bell bearings
-Just barely fast enough not to feel clunky
-Ability has interesting repositioning qualities, hits hard, but is also just fun in general
Just about the only negative I can say about this weapon is that it's reliant on slash damage. This doesn't usually matter that much, since it has the stagger power to knock Crystallians prone within a few hits, but Borealis was a monster and not even Dragonwound Grease could save me.
Pretty much agree with everything here, and it was my favorite weapon on my first play through ever. I was upgrading almost everything I found, and I wanted to try everything I could, but I kept coming back to this weapon whenever I got stuck or needed help progressing.
I also had problems with borealis using fang. Found out it has lower strike resistance. Great mace jump attacks destroyed him. Just run around him on torrent to dodge aoe, close up for cheeky jumping attack. Good strat against him.
Blood hounds finesse is a god tear ash of war in my book. I'm not even that good a player but I can whoop some demi god ass with that bad boy. Right now my two favorite builds are one character specializing with this one and another with the greatsword with lions claw. It's not necessarily the best in the game but it hits like a mac truck and I'm role playing as guts from berserk so I'm sticking to it. Plus it is just fun. I just love an ash of war that can't be interrupted.
Also it's Ash of War is super versatile. A heavy hitting 2 hit combo that also has inherent defensive uses. And it gives you a short range teleport that if get good and a bit lucky you can blink through certain attacks especially close range AOEs. Bloodhound's Fang is my one true love in ER
I rarely used it on my first two playthroughs, but on 3rd NG, I got it right away, scaled Dex and upgraded it over others. It is way more fun than I realized. Like others have said, that bloodflame takes it to another level.
It adds some nice range to the melee, closes the distance, and jumps back to that safer distance, all quickly. You're not as likely to get stun locked as you are with some of the slower buildup AoW.
Same. Every build ends up str, faith, or both.
Number 1 easiest weapon for sure. I feel like moongrum whenever sometime invades me with this thing
I have yet to use it. I haven't done a dex weapon run yet. Only Strength, Strength/Faith, Intelligence, and now Ranged Dex. It MIGHT be an option next run lol
Mine are
1 Uchigatana, Cold, Unsheathe
2 Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear
3 Noble’s Slender Sword, Square Up
4 Godskin Peeler, Blood, Cragblade
5 Executioner’s Greataxe, Royal Knight’s Resolve
I only have three favorite weapons and all of them are the Bloodhound's Fang.
Is the Claymore that OP? Noob here so please don't mind, I really want to know. I tried it but found the piercing attack very situational and rather prefer Longsword and Bloodhound's wider area attacks.
It's just a really good early-game weapon that has a good moveset and respectable damage. It's not really end game viable, but it can take you way into the mid game comfortably.
You should playmore with the claymore, aka the jack of all trades, master of fun. There is a reason it’s the legendary storied sword of castle morne, unlike that game of thrones looking stick.
It's mostly that the Claymore has been a staple of the souls games forever, and has always been an excellent well-rounded weapon, capable of handling just about any situation that comes along. It has developed quite a following as a result, myself included.
Nightrider glaive w/phantom slash
Rusted Anchor w/prayerful strike
Dragonscale Blade
Bolt of Gransax
Crucible Knight weapons (ordovis greatsword & siluras tree)
I like to keep Dragon Cragblade, and Bolt of Gransax equipped at the same time and just switch between them… damn do those weapons compliment each other incredibly well.
All
Weapons
Are
Valid
Blasphemous blade
I liked Blasphemous Blade at first, but when I discovered that it can stunlock Malenia, it became my favorite weapon.
Honestly tho, VERY good weapon 🤣 currently doing an unga bunga playthrough and it's SOLID. Stance break almost anything with ease 😎.
Double flails from the night cavalry was my ng+ build. The poise damage they do is crazy. 3 jumping power attacks staggers just about anything in the game.
I love my greatswords in all their flavors.
I just couldn't be arsed to upgrade them all over again
Yeah the upgrading sucks. I still managed to play the game with 7 different weapons and 4 shields, but I wanted to play with even more but that would have cost so many runes. Late-game I just used cheats to upgrade all weapons to +24, which would still be possible with a lot of grind, and it was even more fun to play with a bunch of different items.
If you don't want to use cheats or upgrade too many weapons, I recommend using like 2-5 weapons with different damage-type/weight/playstyle, upgrade only these, but use different Ashes of War and switch up the AoW-Affinity. This still changes their playstyle a bit and you can play around with all different elemental damage/effects. Don't forget that unlike Dark Souls you can always change the AoW Affinity without any cost!
I’ve spent the last week farming runes for smithing and somber smithing stones. I’ve got enough to level 5 of each type to almost max. Hopefully the dlc has some ancients to get +25/10 on the new weapons.
I just spun up a dex guy and only beat Margit and I am at sotemveil now using the uchi. Any area in particular to keep an eye out for good dex weapons? I’ve beaten it once as a strength sorcerer but never dex.
Guardian Swordspear is good early game (though you might have to farm). Once you get to Leyndell grab Bolt of Gransaxx, IMO the best part of dex builds and up there with the other top tier weapons since you can be hyper mobile around boss arenas and sniper for huge damage
I will note Uchi is a top tier dex weapon. I just beat the entire game with it and the other katanas are side-grades.
Dual curved swords. Lightning infusion (comes from a later-area whetblade). Talismans/buffs that improve rapid attack damage. Highest DPS I've seen without status effects
Unless Wing of Astel was nurfed, god the AoE ability of its LT attack carried me. Do it right it will stun lock most bosses.
Claymans harpoon with the ice spear ash of war is probably still my fav weapon!
(Isn't it a str/int weapon though? I can't remember having played a Dex/int character but I've used that spear A LOT)
Bloodhound's Fang
I don't know if this is the best place to ask, but I really got sick of the game because of this weapon, can anyone tell me what a viable replacement would be? I have 60 hours of gameplay. I tested hammers, some swords, but nothing seems as powerful as spamming Bloodhound Finesse.
At this point in the game I don't know how to find another weapon as good, but I also can't stand it anymore.
Edit: thank you guys for the tips
This is admittedly kinda a shit answer because it's not exactly what you're asking for. But if you learn to parry literally anything feels good. You get this dopamine inducing sound effect followed by you stabbing whatever you're holding into an enemy for a million damage.
To actually answer your question: "Greatsword" is really easy to get and has a ridiculous attack rating with Heavy infusion. It gets even more ridiculous as you hit the STR softcap, then start putting points into DEX and then infuse it to Quality. It's not even slow because you can spam the crouch-light-attack for a quick, extremely long ranged stab that also has the benefit of knocking over most humanoid enemies.
I dunno, I just beat the entire game with an uchigatana without using summons and it never felt weak.
The weapons generally feel pretty balanced.
Loretta's Sickle works fine for me, thankfully. Not really a katana guy
Great Stars for me. Normal weapon which means it can be infused but also buffed with incantations and greases. Has bleed build up and because it's a heavy STR weapon, it hits hard. The weapon does strike type damage and not many enemies are resistant to that damage type. It also heals you for each enemy hit by a certain amount. Prayerful Strike goes great with it and heals me more than my flasks do. Other good ashes of war would be Lion's Claw, Prelate's Charge, Wild Strikes and Gravitas for taking down flying enemies. If you want to make an HP regen build without having to spam the Blasphemous Blade all day like a one-trick pony then this weapon is your best bet.
Also, did I mention it looks freaking awesome?
Great Stars is so good man. Great dmg, poise, cool as hell, heals, bleeds, looks cool as hell...it does it all. My fav weapon now. So many ashes of war goes well with it - I like using chilling mist, golden land, lion's claw and prayerful strike. 10/10 would BONK again
Fighting a Leyndell Knight? Lion's Claw, charged heavy, critical hit. Healed for about 3% in the process.
Fighting a sewer Omen? Lion's Claw, Lion's Claw, critical hit, one or two R1s. Healed for about 5% in the process.
Fighting a little catacomb dude? Guard counter, critical hit.
It's a big strike weapon so it annihilates stone and crystal enemies.
Was so good with Flame Art with my Faith at only 30 and Strength at 22 (minimum to use it one handed) despite trying to do a Dragon Communion Seal incantation build.
Yeah I totally forgot to mention the strike type damage. Few enemies are resistant to that and you can always have a pierce, slash or standard weapon like the Claymore as a backup if you really need it.
I was happy to stick with this weapon on my first run. What a good weapon. Even though I only read the skill description when traversing mountaintop of giants lol
I'm keeping the Greatsword in reserve until i can get the flame enchant on it. Nothing I have compares to the Golden Halberd in sheer damage at the moment, and the move set isn't bad.
It may not be the best in the game ever, but it is extremely good and you can get it really easily early game. I'd happily take a weapon that I can take through from start to end as it means I won't have to keep changing builds
I'd say that's easily one of the top 10 weapons in the game, if nothing else because it is OP enough to carry you through the game.
For PvE, I'd say
Star fists
Death's poker
Blasphemous blade
Depending on skill level.
When you're getting hit a lot and need to survive, the blasphemous blade is just overpowered as hell. Huge AoE damage WHILE healing you both for enemy hit and enemy killed? Sign me in
When you don't get hit as much, death's poker is just crazy good thanks to its ash of war. When used up close can deal absurd amounts of damage, melting basically anything. Easy to buff, too
Star fists may seem weird but as you get really good at running around enemies and you know what your best windows for damage are, these things are just extremely consistent. Axe talisman, spiked crystal tear and a fully charge attack that is as fast as a colossal light attack. Slap cragblade on them for hugr chunks of damage and, most importantly, poise breaks back to back to keep any boss down while you're always safe to roll away thanks to short recovery
Fot blasphemous blade
it also does fire damage, which melts most enemies. It also allowys you to put all your flasks into fp, which is really useful, especially given that the faith scaling already favors faith builds
The death's poker is basically a magic staff with only one spell (its ash of war). You can hit with the sword itself and it does decent damage, but nothing great.
Because of this, you should only pump intelligence when using it (since the skill only scales with intelligence). At 80 intelligence and with the right buffs, I've seen it deal 15k damage in a single skill use which is kinda crazy.
Without using tons of buffs you can stay simple with stuff like shard of alexander, magic cracked tear, magic scorpion charm and Rogier's set (not necessarily all of them) to easily get 5-10k damage. Not to mention that you could still stack golden vow, a body buff and even terra magica.
At that point though it's just overkill because you don't have to oneshot them, you can just spam the ash of war and melt them with minimal buffs
The secret is to use the ash of war (R1 version) from up close, so that the actual swing seemingly connects
If you are ever tempted to give big bonking weapons another shot I'd suggest colossal weapons, specifically powerstanced Golem's Halberd. The crouching R1, backstep R1, running R2, crouching L1, and running L1 are all reasonably fast attacks. If you keep an uninfused Golems H. in your main hand you get to use charge forth with a colossal which is a fast forward-moving attack that covers a ton of ground quick enough to catch even running away invaders if they take a second to breathe. Obviusly the best attack will be the jumping L1 but having so many fast mix ups is really fun. I tried this set up with a coop buddy very recently and it changed my mind about how slow collosals are.
Swordspear completely caught me off guard with how good it is. It's got a fast moveset with good range and infused with keen has great dex scaling. Especially considering how early you can get it, it's a must have for dex builds.
This, dual wielded with the bloody helice in my off-hand.
This weapon is so good I felt dirty using it and changed my whole build to get away from it. It was like heroin.
my go to. in every game except DS2 where it had a weird moveset. Even in BB where they named it something else, we all knew it was a claymore.
Ludwig's Holy Blade?
Ds2 was the zweihander. The zwei don't lei
It stays in my offhand until it's time for co-op.
If you like fashion but want poise, it pairs really well with the tree sentinel armor imop
Only good compared to other Halberds because other halberds movesets are ass.
This, crazy weapon and so sexy.
I'm so glad I used it because I was having a rough time towards the end though. Destroyed Malenia on the first try
Blasphemous Blade, I slept on this weapon for too long, don't make the same mistake!
I've been using the dual blades, sword and shield, and longsword, and while I do like them I kinda want something new. The insect glaive and charge axe sound really cool and so do the bowguns, but I'm hesitant to invest in a new weapon when I'm so far in (at high rank now, hunting the ??? rathian)
So! Sell me on your main weapon, explain to me why you like it/how you use it, and I might give it a shot!
Hunting Horn is a deep and fun weapon even while solo, can bonk like the hammer and has fast movespeed thanks to the self improvement melody, really satisfying to land hits with, manage buffing your party (if you have one) and most importantly, everyone thinks you are a beast and appreciates your help
Hunting horn is the superior choice, although there are only like 12 of us maining it.
Wilds has helped raise the number a bit though
Agree, hunting horn is also one of the most versatile weapons, each having a different set of melodies and Buffs so you have a horn for any situation and can give the whole party boosts like roar immunity, blocking flinches, recovering sharpness and soooo much more.
hammer. KO monster and then hit the B/circle button to bash their skull in.
Another one for Hammer!
Having played MHW/IB and MHR/SB, hammer with part breaker, slugger and weakness exploit, you will quickly find ALL the soft squishy parts of monsters and how exactly to break them.
Plus, there's the beautiful satisfaction of smacking a wyvern in the face and watching it fall to the ground stunned. I played a lot of switch axe, enjoyed it, but it didn't bring me that same joy.
I'm actually in the exact same boat, been a hammer dude since Wilds but have been messing with the Switch Axe. I do dig it, but it is missing that oomph that comes with the hammer.
To add:
No gauges. No ridiculous combos. Just you, a toddler sized hammer, two possible charges but we mostly use the full charge anyway and just go to town.
Also, big damage numbers.
Insect glaive my guy. Dash so much even you aren't sure where you're going
As a former bonker, I approve of this comment. IG is an awesome weapon, especially after switching from the slow-moving weapons. I recommend looking up FightnCowboy on YouTube. The dude makes some of the best guides you'll ever see(also males them for tons of other games) and goes really in depth on what to use with it and how the weapons work.
As a side note , I also recommend trying out the Switch Axe a bit. It's a lot of fun once you get down the way it changes and how to use the 2 modes. I went with Gun Lance a lot in World, but I'm not liking it as much in Wilds. I feel like I want to be far more mobile in this game.
All of them. Build all the glaives.
My first impression of the Lance was slow and boring. I was very, very, wrong.
You stick to the monster poking and smacking them until they fall. Hopping around to slice off tails. Punishing monsters that try to smack you. Bracing and stabbing them in the mouth after a roar.
It jumps away? Set your Lance and charge. Want a mount? Jump mid charge and smack while in the air. That wounded beast running home? Charge after it and run it through.
When a Black Diablos comes out screaming from under you and you land a clutch counter, the cable just pulls you all the way to its head. Release all that ammo into its face and make sure it charges all the way to the wall.
I tried Lance towards the end of my time with World after I googled the ranking for how popular each weapon was. I saw Lance at the bottom and said, “well shit, I guess I’m playing Lance now”. I’m not a tank role player. I’m always making dexterity builds in games. Hence I love the sword and shield. But I thoroughly enjoy Lance. I’m playing it now in World. It is satisfying as all get out, just standing there like a beast shrugging off hits from monsters multiple times your size. Also, you get the added bonus of the weapon being huge. So you really get to appreciate all the design the developers put into them.
Negrigante was soooo much fun to tank with Lance.
I’ve been running through the base game with the Nightrider Glaive and Golden Halberd, both have served me incredibly well and have been a blast to use. But with the Land of Shadow on the horizon, I’m looking to expand my arsenal.
I’ve beaten the DLC before so I know it will throw a variety of challenges at me, and I feel like I’m lacking the kind of weapon variety needed to adapt to different situations and bosses.
I’ve got plenty of upgrade materials and runes, so I’d love to hear your suggestions for weapons that are absolutely worth upgrading to +25 (or +10 for somber) before diving into the DLC.
I’m running a pure Strength build with 25 Faith for buffs, but I’m open to a respec if there’s a weapon or build that really shines.
in the dlc.. find the black steel greathammer… trust
Best guard counter weapon in the game, especially with faith builds
It's pretty cool but i was more into the black steel twinblade, just a question of moveset.
The claymore
Personally I’m a claymore Stan in every dark souls game…but then in this game I’m a huge lordsworns greatsword addict. I’m only 15 hours into my latest fresh playthru and I’m doing SOMETHING w my build right cause I’m past half the game. (Not including DLC)
Funny how I actually found the claymore early on in the game and didn't even realize it was a rlly good weapon, still use it ever since I got it😭
Honestly this is a top 5 weapon in the game.
What is the weapon right below rivers of blood? Looks totally unfamiliar
EDIT: and the giant thing below estoc
The one you like using.
The last upgrade isn't that great of a difference. I'd recommend leaving the weapons at +24 if you don't have enough spare materials: the DLC weapons are quite fun and you might at some point wish you'd saved the materials for those.
And most importantly, give the context as to why it's best, and when it's not.
And hell, don't stop at weapons. What's the best consumables? What's the best armor? When does the best weapon stop being the best? When does it start?
I want to hear it all!
I'll give some starters.
Moonlight Greatsword: Not only is it amazing for its build, but it also does better than if you used a similar weapon in a different build. It has major downsides in being really hard to get, really hard to upgrade, and come really late into the game. In fact, it's probably only good in Newgame+. But if you can get and upgrade it, it's really amazing.
Great Club: Amazing for the opposite reason as the Moonlight Greatsword. This is very easy to get, no harder to upgrade than any other weapon, and scales very well with your stats and armor. It's really hard to use at first because of its weight, and demands poise and armor to use well. But if you don't have the stats it'll probably do insane damage at that point, and once you do nothing is stopping you from doing any more.
Uchigatana: A great weapon for a light build that's easy to get and scales well with stats. With its poisebreak, damage, length, and speed, you can be very aggressive with it and still avoid hits by light rolling away. It's kinda terrible if you're mid rolling, but anything faster than that and it feels amazing.
Astora Straight Sword: Trivial to obtain if you get the Master Key, and trivial to equip if you go faith, it provides insane damage at the start of the game and carries you until you get a proper divine weapon.
Grass Crest Shield: I have no idea why anybody would use any other shield, with one exception. Yes its defenses may not be as good in some parameters as some other shields, but it's fine, and it dramatically boosts your stamina regen at the same time. If you rarely block, that makes the shield even better. This is a must-equip for me unless I really need low weight.
Target Shield: Another no-brainer, for different reasons. This shield is low weight, allowing for light rolling while still using a shield. And it has the best parry animation in the game, making your parry windows very forgiving. Basically if you fail a parry with this, it's because you were too far away. It has, what, a quarter second window? Crazy. My go-to if I don't have the equip weight for the grass crest.
Giant's Armor: I said I didn't want to just limit this to just weapons. The Giant's Armor is easy to get, easy to upgrade, easy enough to equip with the Havel's Ring, and makes you functionally invincible with most builds. Because it comes in four slots you can easily just swap pieces in as you gain endurance and upgrade what pieces you have. Get this upgraded, and you'll be able to trade blows with endgame bosses.
Havel's Ring: One ring slot and your stats can explode. This allows the use of good armor really early, even allowing mages to use good armor with no endurance investment, and allowing you to use heavy armor with moderate investment. It also allows you to light roll with decent armor. This is generally a must-equip for me.
Dark Wood Grain Ring: A must for any light build, and for high Newgame+ where armor does nothing. This allows you to dodge an attack and almost immediately go back on the offensive. At the same time, it gives you enough iframes to not have to perfectly predict the timing of your opponent's attack to evade it. As stiff as the game is, this one ring makes it far more playable.
Dusk Crown: At the expense of your least important equipment slot, you get a massive boost to your best source of damage. This may seem only moderately useful for most builds, but it's not only a must-have as a mage, but available super early in the game to boot.
Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring: Basically the same thing as the Dusk Crown, but on a different slot, and stacks with it. It's really hard to get a 40% increase in damage from anything, but spells can get it easily.
Lightning Infusion: Yeah I just want to go crazy with what I hope to see in this thread. Lightning infusions are the easiest upgrades past 10 to get, require no stats to get good damage, and provide the most useful attacking element. For any non-pure offense build, or any build that needs a secondary attacking type, this is great. The only downside is that it's available right before a boss that heavily resists it but just...don't upgrade to lightning until you beat that boss and you're fine.
Blooming Purple Moss: In Newgame, Toxic is an instant death. Having something to remove toxic is basically having an extra life. I don't think there's anything I can say past that. It's a literal life saver.
Estus Flask: Honestly can you think of an item better than this? This one item obsoletes an entire spell school, and it's available as early as you could hope. You probably couldn't beat the game without it. And yet we take it for granted. By far the best item in the game.
There. That should provide enough motivation for some people to come up with ideas. What are some weapons that do what I said, better? What about scenarios I didn't come up with? Let me hear your thoughts.
Black Knight Sword. You can get it very early in the game and it will carry you all the way to the last boss. Also you only need to upgrade it to +5.
Black knight weapons are the best for the first play through (or for speed run). They can be easily upgraded to +5, using materials found in Great Hollow
I 100% agree with this. I recently finished my first run, and man it literally carried me so hard.
Before I was able to beat the first black knight which is in undead burg, someone mentioned you can get his sword and that it's super strong. I restarted my playthrough like 5 times till I got it and man is that thing good. Very good move set, not too heavy, crazy damage even in mid-endgame, can be upgraded to +4 out of 5 before anor londo, and easy to reset for since it only takes like 10 minutes to get back to that black knight if you run past everything. If you manage to get the sword you can go back and do everything you ran past.
Honestly I just love the bk sword. The other black knight weapons are pretty good too but not as good in my opinion.
The bk greatsword is much slower and the move set isn't as good in my opinion, plus it's way heavier.
The bk greataxe is honestly amazing except for its weight and heavy attacks that miss pretty often.
The bk halberd never really clicked with me but other people seem to love it. It's raw damage is really high but it's scaling isn't too crazy. I prefer the great scythe/lifehunt scythe for their moves plus a much faster two handed advancing strong attack. They're both really light and both do bleed damage, but for the life hunt you'll need to use the blood shield and bloodbite ring as it inflicts bleed on the user too.
All in all the weapons I'd recommend most are, bk sword, abyss greatsword (need 10 soft humanity to maximize damage) , gold tracer, and the lifehunt scythe.
If there was one "objectively" best weapon, it would be this one. I suspect many newbies would have dropped this game if they didn't chance upon this weapon. That's how good it is.
You're probably right. My main weapon on my first playthrough was the bk halberd (I know, we're talking about the sword, but still).
I nearly cried the second time around when I found out it wasn't a guaranteed drop
At least it's available early.
It uses the Halberd moveset, right? That's well praised. Then it has great dex scaling.
I think there's no halberd that scales just off strength, so if you want one and to be efficient with your levels the scythe seems great. It definitely seems to be one of the big three dex weapons, though I don't think it's fast enough to utilize the normal wants of a dex weapon. Being quick enough to poke between enemy attacks while still being able to roll.
I should try it out one day. People keep on saying it does insane damage.
It’s my favorite weapon on fire/dex builds. The range makes up for the slower attack speed, and it does hit like a truck. As a bonus high dex lowers your cast time, so you can sling fireballs a little safer.
If you like STR builds with a big fuck off weapon, it’s like that but a little fancier.
Yeah i didnt try to many weapons during my playthroughs but i think it has a halberd-like moveset. And if you know what you are doing you can get at like the very start of the game. Also the bleed damage in pvp is really good.
Great Scythe has its own moveset and it's pretty broken.
The 2H strong attack is the core move, it takes 2-3 steps forward then does a wide left to right sweep that can take 3-4 things out in one hit and because of the step forward all the windup is safely out of their range and as long as you hit the recovery is short because you stay up and moving.
The 1H light and strong stay still when they attack but they use the whole reach of the weapon so their range is long and once more they can be launched from safety (as in you can pop the toxic boys in painted world from outside of their death cloud), either an overhead or a swing in from the right that can often hit round corners. So you can use it in any situation and stay safe.
The running attack comes out super fast for good damage and the 2H light is also reasonably quick to repeat so that's your DPS move for fights like Four Kings.
It has enough damage to one shot most every smaller mob as far as NG+2 at least.
Bro ik, I use tin crys cat with cry mag weapon, shit shreds. I tried out sunlight blade but I couldn’t dig that I couldn’t use a shield, cat and talisman in my left at the same time. I found that at 40 faith sunlight with ivory talisman did less damage than cmw with tcc at 40 int. Also I can use magic weapon and great magic weapon before o and s so I opted for that
Balder sword, a scale in dex, early in the game to farm if you want it.
Claymore, it’s on the way to the parish and has probably the best move set with slashes and thrusts with c str and c dex scaling
Silver knight sword, ok scaling, (I can’t remember the exact,) looks beautiful: very important
Fap ring, bc duh
Child mask, light, stamina regen and if you’re lucky you can get it pretty much immediately
Stone knight set, can get it fairly quickly, on par wit havels set, looks cool, and the gauntlets and greaves are like .5 lighter than havel
Any of the katanas is also great. The great scythe
