Best Calculator Apps for Math

TL;DR

  • PCalc and Soulver are popular choices for macOS [1:1][1:2].
  • Wolfram Alpha, Desmos, and GeoGebra are excellent web-based options [2:1][2:3].
  • Solves is highly recommended for iPad with a clean UI and no ads [4:1][4:6].

MacOS Calculator Apps

For macOS users, PCalc is frequently recommended due to its comprehensive features suitable for math students. It has earned high praise and even Mac Gem status [1:4]. Soulver is another option that offers a unique approach by allowing calculations in a text format, making it useful for quick computations and unit conversions [1:2]. I have used it but it returned many times incorrect results (don't know why) so I turned out to another solution... Quite sad because it is a wonderful app. Have you encountered the same issue?

But how could a calculator return incorrect results? Anyway, I don’t think Numi is the way to go for a math student, stick to PCalc

+1 for PCalc

5-star PCalc review earns the app rare Mac Gem status

Calca for Mac is what I use currently while studying engineering. It’s like a markdown calculator.

Example usage is: given x,y,z. Find a.

x=10km

y=15m

z=30m

a = x y z

a in km

=> 10.045km (=> means to calculate, = means to assign value)

a in m

=> 10,045m

Depending on your use case, this app may be very useful or not at all. For me, I have stopped using my scientific calculator for this. It even supports units and will output the correct unit in the final answer, as well as converting the unit to something else.

Hello community!

After looking for decent and free Math app for my niece (she's a first grader),
I've decided to spent some time on developing my own.

It's fully configurable with:

  • Addition, Substraction, Multiplication and Division
  • Configurable timer for answers, number of questions, difficulty levels
  • Two input types: Quiz or Number Keyboard
  • Rewards for finished sessions - random funny images (with possibility to add user-generated ones)

It's completely safe and free: no ads, no IAP's, no tracking.

You can get it here:

Phone calculator apps?

Are there any phone apps, preferably free, that have all or most of the functions of a TI-83+ calculator? Most of my students are low income and cannot afford one. iPhone and Android solutions welcome.

Desmos app

ArmyGoneTeacher · 7 years ago

Agreed. This is probably the best option. A lot of people also miss the fact that they have stuff besides just the graphing calculator. They have basic 4 function, scientific, and matrix calculator (beta) as well.

In comparison to a TI-83/84. The only feature that I have not really been able to duplicate reliably is solving 3 variable systems. There are some community built stuff that has sliders to partially solve this issue but they are not perfect.

Its fairly easy to use on computer and on the phone.

For Android check out wabbitemu. It allows you to use most of the TIs. Not sure if its out for iPhone yet.

While this is an option. You have to remember that technically it is illegal to use a TI rom if you do not own the calculator. A teacher/school can get in a lot of trouble for actively promoting its use or distribution.

TI has a program where they give free calculators to schools to loan out to low-income students. I’m not sure the details, but it’s what my college’s learning center does.

Good apps to learn math

Apps is a little restricting. There are no plenty of amazing YouTube channels, websites, and textbooks for math

Khan academy (app and website) has everything you need for high school and some undergrad math (nothing proof based as of today). It’s got Pre-algebra, algebra 1, high school geometry, algebra 2, trigonometry, PreCalculus, AP statistics (introductory college level statistics), AP calculus AB (calculus 1 mostly), AP calculus BC (calculus 1 and calculus 2 in one course), multivariable calculus (calculus 3), differential equations, linear algebra, upon a few other things

MIT’s open courseware has a fuck ton of shit from like, algebra 1, to the calculus series, to topology, abstract algebra, analysis (advanced calculus), and more

3 upvotes on reddit
SingleLocksmith2575 · 3 years ago

Since everyone else has already mentioned khan academy, i'll add aops (art of problem solving) to it. Though its a forum, there are lots of problems at many different levels being discussed. And the discussions are enriching if you know what to pick up.

While this isn’t an app, ArtOfProblemSolving.com is simply fantastic. It doesn’t just present you content and quiz you, it always gives you problems just beyond your understanding of the topic which is the best way to build intuition and problem-solving skills. They have ebooks that go up until calculus.

part time undergrad in my 4th year but not a senior.

desmos and youtube are my two most used apps for math. youtube not as much but depending on the class you’re taking it can be extremely helpful. there’s a popular series called the essence of linear algebra that damn near carried me through the class.

i haven’t found a good ai chatbot for math and i kinda stopped looking. chatgpt hallucinates math sometimes and i just don’t have it on me to try and catch it whenever it does that. i’m not a teacher that’s why i’m asking it in the first place lol.

Must have apps for math?

Posted by AcquaFisc · in r/math · 3 years ago

I'm always mesmerized by Desmos, I spend hours playing with math on the graphic calculator and often the ease of doing this helped me grasping a lot of concepts.

I mainly use Desmos, Wolphram Alpha and Geogebra to support visualizing the math. I'm a control system engineer, Matlab is my beard and butter and when needed I use it to visualize. Anyway I'm looking for integrated environment that bring you straight to the point. Is there something that I've missed?

Hope I've been clear.

octave is a free and open source matlab alternative, which i'll mention because everything you talked about aside from matlab itself is free to use (well, w|a is only partially free).

mathematica, not free nor open source, is a wonderful computational environment, better suited for mathematics than matlab/octave and has wolfram alpha integrated into it. i used mathematica religiously when i was an undergraduate and my university paid for the subscription.
