TL;DR Many cars offer Android Auto, but availability can depend on the model year and trim level. For older cars, aftermarket head units are a viable option for adding Android Auto functionality.
Availability in New Cars
Android Auto is increasingly common in new cars, but not universally standard across all models or trims. For example, while some Chevrolet Silverado models from 2016 onward have Android Auto, it may only be available in higher trims like LTZ [2:1]. Similarly, Mazda and Ford vehicles often require specific technology packages to include Android Auto
[2:2]
[2:4].
Aftermarket Options
For those purchasing older used cars, installing an aftermarket head unit that supports Android Auto is a practical solution. Brands like Sony, Pioneer, and Alpine offer units that can be installed for as little as $200, plus installation costs [5:1]
[5:2]. This approach allows you to choose any car you like and add Android Auto functionality without severely limiting your vehicle options
[5:3].
Comparisons and Considerations
While Android Auto offers advantages such as superior navigation via Google Maps and better music controls compared to Bluetooth systems [1:4], some users find they can live without it if the car offers other engaging features
[1:2]. However, many drivers prefer having Android Auto for its convenience and compatibility with their smartphones
[1:3].
Specific Models and Brands
Certain brands and models are known for supporting Android Auto. Volkswagen Polo and Ford Escape are examples of cars that have Android Auto, although compatibility might vary by year and trim [3:1]
[3:2]. Toyota has been historically reluctant to offer Android Auto, but newer models like the Camry have included it since 2018
[1:5]
[1:6].
In summary, Android Auto is widely available in newer cars but may require specific trims or packages. For older vehicles, aftermarket solutions provide flexibility and affordability, allowing drivers to enjoy Android Auto's benefits without being limited to certain car models.
People who have owned a car with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay would purchase one without it, or is it a must for you?
I have Android Auto for the first time ever in my current car. I've had it for about a year and a half now, and I think it would be tough to give it up. I would give it up if I could get something that's super engaging to drive though.
I've found that Google Maps with Google Assistant works a lot better than any nav system with voice controls in any car I've driven.
I also like that you can buy a lower trim car without navigation and still have it.
I also like that you can charge your phone while using it.
Android Auto music controls work better than Bluetooth controls or in-built car apps
I assume CarPlay is a similar story.
Could I live without it? Obviously, I used to do it all the time. However, my current car has nav built in and I still use Google Maps with Google Assistant instead if I need directions. It's also a good way to not need to use clunky OEM UIs if the UI is bad.
Luckily, it's basically standard these days and head units with them is relatively inexpensive to buy and install (comparatively speaking) so it's getting harder to run into a car without it.
I think the Camry was the first one to get it. 2018
Had it, then the next 2 cars I purchased do not have it. Will not go out of my way to purchase a car with Android Auto
What kind do you have now that don’t have it ?
Basic Toyota. Less than 2 years. Toyota have been reluctant to offer Android Auto
I genuinely don't care about tech like that. If I wanted it, I'd just put in an aftermarket head unit that has it. But then again I've never been spoiled by it, I daily drive an '87, and have yet to replace the cassette unit with a Bluetooth system.
That's my thing. Car I have now has it from factory. Car I'm looking at doesn't have it. So I been trying to see if you can switch it out without losing most of the functionality.
Most brand new cars can't have aftermarket units installed anymore, so you'd have to look at it on a car to car basis. And anything that's configured through the factory system would be gone, too.
I found the list that shows which cars are Android Auto compatible. So if for example it says Chevrolet Silverado 2016-on, does that mean that every 2016 and newer Silverado has Android Auto, or is it just an available option on those models?
My mazda 3 has it. But only comes in the premium package. So it's most likely based on the bells and whistles is has..
I think that is something you should check for on the auto makers site or the sale listing.
Some cars might have it as an additional technology package etc.
No. Most have it in specific packages. My Ford Fiesta required the technology package, otherwise it doesn't support it. I think very few cars come with it standard at base.
i believe its only if your headunit supports it. Yes the 7 and 8" screen sin the silverado/sierras 2016 and up have it, the tiny 4" work truck/ low end model screen does not
my 17 and 18 LT's both had/have it but ive got the 7" screen in them.
I don't think the Silverado WT models have AA. I'm not 100 % sure though. In my case, I've had 2016, 2018, 2020 LTZ Silverados, and all had AndroidAuto. However the LTZ is the upper trim as well..
That makes sense because the WT probably has a more basic screen anyways, doesn't it? I would think maybe even the LT should be an upgrade. Little off topic but, how did you like those trucks? I am assuming you did if you kept getting newer ones :)
Liked the 16 alot, the 18 was blah.. I love love my 2020. The difference is my 16, and 20 both had/have Z71 package, which has 20" tires, and wheels, and Rancho Shocks.. You'd think that combination would be more off road, but for me anyway it's a more comfortable ride.
One other thing - I wouldn't have gotten the 2020, but I happened to check trade to get out of my lease, because my mileage was getting close to max. I was planning on buying at lease end (milage doesn't matter if you're buying at lease end). They gave me a price of like 28k, which that's what I about owed. Three months later I checked again because I had heard values on newer trucks had gone up pretty substantially. They offered 32k, and I jumped. I guess it was just an odd occurrence, there were 5 vehicles last year that actually gained in used value late last year, the Silverado was one of them.
I know some car brands (BMW, Toyota) didn’t add Android Auto for a few years after they added CarPlay. Is the opposite true for any cars? Do any have Android Auto but not CarPlay?
My Ford Escape
What year is it? The 2017 and later Escapes support CarPlay.
Edit: Why was I downvoted? It literally says on Apple’s website what cars are supported. Unless your Escape doesn’t have a touchscreen (in which case it wouldn’t have Android Auto either) it has CarPlay.
My VW Polo only has Android Auto
What year is it? The 2016 and later VW Polos support CarPlay.
Oh, didn't know that. Thx. My Android Auto does the job though.
Basically just went to Wikipedia and wrote an article out of it....
the list is more up to date and has a few more cars than the wikipedia article
It doesn't make a distinction between GAS and non-GAS.
Also missing Polestar 4 and 5, Volvo EX90.
Is there a way to sideload apps onto it?
My Lyriq only has streaming podcast’s and radio stations. I don’t care about any of that.
What I want is my Google calendar, some EV apps, like A Better Route Planner, Plug Share, Electrify America, etc.
Waze would be nice too.
I spent a lot of money on rental cars last year, so I'm thinking about buying. I'm running into a dumb hangup, though: most of my driving is out of town (weekend trips, etc.) and I vastly prefer an android auto setup for navigation / phone / media to a phone mount setup.
So my question is: if I find a good deal on an older used car that doesn't support android auto, is it likely to be possible to add it? Is that horribly expensive? Or is it better to look for a car that already has it?
What is your budget? You can add android auto to most older cars for as little as $200
I'm trying to keep the whole cost under $15k, so I need to work out how much of that to spend on the car itself if I'm planning to spend a bit on upgrades. If it's just $200 then I don't have to worry too much, but I probably wouldn't do the installation myself - maybe $300 including labor, then?
Find a price for supply and fit for a head unit that supports Android Auto. Android Auto is relatively new. Android Auto was introduced just over 5 years ago. So if you insist on Android Auto, you will greatly restrict your choice of vehicle
Get any car you like and install a android based head unit or any good 2 din with android auto. Sony, pioneer and alpine have great units out there.
Any idea what I should expect to spend, including paying someone to install it? Is it closer to $500 or $2000?
Like any electronic device out there expect a variety of products offering different features. I'd suggest buying something off Amazon when there's a price drop. You can get some decent units for less than 400-500 bucks and I think you should be able to install it yourself or get the help from some technician for max 100. You don't need to get the latest and greatest. But avoid those cheap Chinese units.
Looking for a car with the following features:
Rides a bit higher / has safety features for snow and ice conditions
Is environmental (maybe not full electric since it's not as popular in the Midwest, but maybe a hybrid?)
Is Android Auto capable
Can fit 4 people safely (2 kids potentially)
Is cheapish? Still paying back student loans, currently have a 2007 Dodge Caliber that's slowly falling apart on me.
What you want is a Prius
No AA on the Prius unless you go aftermarket...which just seems so unnecessary these days. I haven't muckled around with aftermarket stereos since my 90's Tacoma. Funny how Toyota has always sucked at stereos....
Especially these days
Kia Niro hands down. It's a newer car so it won't be "cheap", but the base model costs around 23k new and comes with AA.
direct injection = not environmentall friendly. Toxic emissions: https://www.adac.de/infotestrat/tests/eco-test/detail.aspx?IDMess=3929&info=KIA+Niro+1.6+GDI+Hybrid+Spirit
I hadn't heard of that before. Sounds like the study you linked is the only one so far, but that doesn't mean it's not true. Luckily it looks like an $80 filter could be the solution to this, but car manufacturers are apparently looking that over. Hopefully they catch on and include them in the future.
Most environmentally friendly? Buy a used car and install an android auto head unit for like $400.
I wouldn’t buy a cheap hybrid, it’s really hit or miss and many of the batteries and hybrid systems in cheap ones are worn out and people just offload them.
Agreed. CO2 creating a new car from parts all over the world is not more environmentally friendly than keeping an existing car on the road.
>CO2 creating a new car from parts all over the world is not more environmentally friendly than keeping an existing car on the road
Lifecycle analyses demonstrate otherwise - the large majority of any car's carbon footprint is inflicted in operations, not manufacturing (nb Figure 2, Page 8). The delta in carbon emissions is so great that you'll actually realize a net emissions reduction by scrapping a conventional car and replacing it with a hybrid or an EV, as the emissions delta between a normal car and a hybrid/EV exceeds the carbon cost of building the latter.
Civic
Can I pretend the Kia Niro fits this description, because it pretends it does?
If you want a car with very high MPG and Android Auto and think you can live without the "high ride height," the Niro's cousin, the Hyundai Ioniq does all of these things better (it uses some eco friendly parts in the interior and gets better gas mileage than the Niro.) You can also look at the Honda Clarity but I hear those are not reliable.
Beyond that (and Toyota, which doesn't have Android Auto), fantastic fuel economy and high ride contradict each other. You can't get both. The laws of physics prevent it from happening.
Edit: I was thinking about your problem a little more. Perhaps an AWD sedan will get the job done as well. Your options are a Subaru Impreza, a Subaru Legacy, or a Mazda3 AWD. They don't ride high but are built to make you feel secure in snowy weather. They also get some of the best gas mileage of any AWD vehicle by virtue of being smaller in general.
I'm sure this is a dumb question, but does anyone have or know of a good list of the apps which will work with Android Auto? I've seen a couple old lists which are mostly empty and useless, there has to be a few lists out there which are better.
The FAQ here lists:
which has a handful of apps but is very incomplete and out of date.
And the play store also has this list:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/collection/promotion_3001303_android_auto_all
which is slightly better, but still missing most of them.
For example, I wanted to find a local music player since I was having a lot of issues with VLC, and I found Musicolet, which is very nice, but was not listed on either of those lists.
I found it here, with a bunch of other players which also don't appear on those lists.
My google has failed to find a decent list, but it must exist somewhere. I saw on this subreddit someone had a few tricks to search on the play store, but they didn't work for me.
Anyone find a good list they could share?
We could collect some apps here : ) I recommend Fermata Auto. For Music, TV, YouTube and as Browser for AA. Best install with AAAD. https://github.com/shmykelsa/AAAD
Thank you so much for posting this!
I assumed something like Femata would only work with root! Got it up and running yesterday via AAAD (seems to be the only app worth installing though unless you'd recommend others?).
Working fine with AA, Galaxy S22 Ultra on android 13.
I've now got YouTube and iptv in my car - perfect for my seemingly weekly hour long charging sessions at public EV chargers!
No, Fermata is the only App i would recommend...
But you need AAAD to install it.
It wouldnt work with just the apk.
I know you'd is old but I just Installed Fermata yesterday. How do you add the IPTV channels?
Are you saying we can watch TV on our screen if we get that?
Thanks in advance
Are you planning on using it as a head unit or do you just want something to practise your installs on that will need to come out in a month or 2?
Headunit
Then buy some B&E tools with your budget and go “borrow” one that will work from someone else’s vehicle /s
It’s just not worth the headache to cheap out. Just be patient, save and wait for a sale. Sony imo, makes the best entry level ones for the price point.
It does not exist. You need to budget around 350.
This is the best answer. Even at the 350 mark most won’t be wireless aa/carplay
Sorry if I'm not allowed to post this here, please correct me if so. I have a 2017 Nissan Sentra S with a basic stereo, and am really interested in upgrading to an Android head unit. I'm not trying to cheap out on a head unit but i heard Joying makes great ones for under $400 USD. I prefer a bigger screen but not sure where to buy the dash kits to fit it, or if I really need a dash kit. Any advice will be very helpful, thanks!
I would not waste time or money on one of those Chinese headunits. They are buggy, have poor sound quality, and have a high failure rate.
I would stick to Pioneer, Alpine, JVC, Kenwood, or Clarion with Android Auto. Go to Crutchfield and enter you car info it will tell you what fits and also all the parts need for install.
+1
I wanted an android head unit badly for the last couple of years but when it came time to pull the trigger recently I just couldn't do it. From my seemingly endless hours of research I came to the same conclusion as above. Not worth it.. buggy, failures, so-so support... had to up my budget considerably to but went with AVIC-W8400NEX recently.
In reality I got many of the features offered by the Joying and other units at 2x-3x the price.. but I really don't want to be spending time debugging shit on my car head unit. If I want to figure out software problems and send bug reports and shit I have a 9-5 for that, where I am the one getting paid!
I appreciate your input, would a headunit from one of the brands you listed be bluetooth compatible with my phone, as well as be able to download spotify and google maps?
