TL;DR
Availability of Apple CarPlay
Apple CarPlay is available in over 500 car models, but its inclusion can vary based on trim levels and regional offerings. For example, while GM brands like Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac typically offer CarPlay as a standard feature across all trims [1:4], other manufacturers like Honda may only include it in higher trims
[1:9]. It's important to verify the specific trim level when purchasing a vehicle to ensure it includes CarPlay.
Affordable Options
For budget-conscious buyers seeking cars equipped with Apple CarPlay, models like the Honda Civic EX (2016-2017) and Toyota Corolla (2020) are recommended options [2]. These models provide a balance between affordability and features such as rear-view cameras and lane-switching assistance. The Volkswagen Jetta was also suggested as a good value option
[2:1].
Wireless CarPlay and CarKey
BMW offers wireless CarPlay in models like the 2018 BMW 3-series, though it might not be a standard feature [3:2]. Wireless CarPlay can enhance convenience by eliminating the need for physical connections. Additionally, Land Rover Defender added wireless CarPlay via updates
[3:8]. However, some users report issues with reliability and stability
[3:5].
Alternative Options and Custom Solutions
For those looking for alternative solutions, aftermarket products like the RCD330 head unit for VW models can provide CarPlay functionality at a lower cost [1:6]. There are also dash-mounted devices that offer CarPlay without needing to replace the existing radio, although these may not be as integrated as factory-installed systems
[4:1].
Recommendations Beyond Discussions
When choosing a car with Apple CarPlay, consider factors such as the ease of use, integration with other tech features, and overall driving experience. If wireless CarPlay is a priority, ensure compatibility with your preferred model and trim level. Additionally, check for any potential subscription fees associated with CarPlay, especially in brands like BMW.

If a model is on this list, does it have Apple CarPlay? I'm looking at a lot of different used cars online and want to make sure whatever I settle on is equipped with CarPlay, but most ads online don't mention anything about it. It's also pretty hard to determine whether or not a car has it in the photos. So if a model is on this list, is it safe to assume it will always have CarPlay or is it just a possibility?
I’d suggest it means CarPlay is at the very least an option on a grade of each listed vehicle.
Indeed. Some Honda vehicles at least don’t have CarPlay on the lowest trim level.
Exactly this. My 2017 Ford Focus has it, but I had to get the SEL trim for it. The S and SE levels o not come with it, but it can be added. You’ll want to closely check window stickers and/or test it yourself before driving off the lot.
If a GM vehicle is listed as having it/ it has it standard. When Chevy/Buick/GMC/Cadillac started adding it to vehicles, they added it as a standard feature at every trim level of a vehicle. I think Canyon got it first around 2016ish?
porsche macan has it,but it's not enabled by default it's a $2200 option.
Apple really should have put their foot down with this crap and said that they can’t charge extra for it. I know some BMWs even make CarPlay a subscription service.
Dang really? That's unfortunate 3 series is up there on my list
Stopped getting beemers after finding out about this. I always knew I was paying a premium but didn’t feel like I was getting ripped off.
On vw it was 150€ option but included android auto and mirrorlink also
Problably headunit screen has to be big enough etc.
If you’ve got a MK5 or MK6 Golf (and other models) you can purchase an RCD330 from China with CarPlay available. Best $200 I’ve ever spent, honest.
In Israel, most vehicles don't come with carplay although they are on the list.
Hi, my '04 Honda Civic just broke down and will be like $3000 to replace the engine, so obviously it's time for a new car. I know what I'm looking for isn't cheap but I'd still like to spend as little as possible, while also having it be reliable in the long run. Here are my preferences:
-small, like a coupe or sedan-apple CarPlay-rear view and lane switching cameras-sporty looking? (not a must but a big plus)
I do not want to spend any more than 20k, preferably closer to 15 or less.
So far I have looked at '16-17 Honda Civic Ex, and '20 Toyota Corollas. But I'd like to hear some more ideas and opinions.
(sorry if any of this sounded cringey, I know absolutely nothing about cars)
EDIT: Thanks everyone for all your input! I ended up buying a 2020 Kia Forte LXS! Had 8k miles and only $16,500
jetta!
Hey all! I built this site to document car makes, models, years, trims that have CarPlay, wireless CarPlay, and CarKey available. While I was searching for cars with wireless CarPlay I found it difficult to filter on used car search sites so I compiled the list from a few sources. Hope this helps others!
2018 BMW 3-series has wireless CarPlay. It may not be a standard feature, though.
BMW i3s have Wireless CarPlay if enabled, they're all listed as wired on this website.
Your website is pretty confusing. For example, I click Honda and Accord says “Wired Carplay” followed by “Wireless CarPlay (All Trims)” which is incorrect.
Ahhh got it. Thanks for the feedback. I had retrieved the wireless carplay info from cars.com. What part is incorrect? Only some trims? Or are you saying that wired CarPlay is not available on models with wireless?
Wireless carplay isn’t available on all Accord Trims. EX-L and Touring trims have wireless, while LX and Sport have wired only
I’d want more cars to adopt CarKey but my experience with it hasn’t been the best. It can be janky sometimes.
Interesting. I’ve never tried it but I have felt that CarPlay has been flaky too. Hope that it stabilizes with newer models/OS updates 🤞
Land Rover Defender added wireless car play in May via an update to their cars with Pivi Pro. I don’t know how many models but I assume it’s the new Defender/ RR Sport and full sized Rover
Got it. Thanks for the info. I’ve loaded in 2021/2022 but not yet 2023
You have conflicting information for the Mustang Mach-E between the Mustang Mach-E and Mustang categories.
I have one of the cheaper CarPlay’s rn. I want to get a better one. What is one I should go with. I don’t know how to wire anything and don’t wanna take my radio out so I need one of the ones that sits on your dash. Any help would be appreciated
Do you mean that you don’t want to be the one to install a new radio or you just don’t want a new radio at all? And what kind of CarPlay do you have exactly? Because… you are much better off getting a new radio to have CarPlay. I never heard of having CarPlay sitting on the dash.

3k wtf is this trash. You better off just using the phone
What car do you have?
2007 dodge caliber
Taking your radio out isn’t so bad. Check out crutchfield for options

Chevrolet Spark
Literally any car.
Just buy an android auto/car play head unit and put it in a car. Max, $500.
Yep. My 06 Accord I bought for 4k now has carplay and a backup camera.
This is an old ass thread but where can you go to get that done?
Honda Fit, Kia Rio, Kia Forte, Hyundai Elantra would be a starting point
An iPhone and a bicycle will be your least expensive option.
Mitsubishi Mirage or Chevy Spark can be had for ~$10k and come with Car Play. I wouldn't buy either of them, but that's what it is. Cheapest I would buy is an Elantra at around $15k nicely equipped (although lesser trims can be had for ~$13k).
I’ve been driving my ‘10 Mitsubishi for around a couple years now. I was in the market for a new stereo around November last year. Best Buy was offering a good price on a Sony wireless CarPlay unit and at the time installation was free. I’m very happy with it, and I use it every day. Total game changer.
No
Driving is better when my phone isn't incorporated.
Personally enjoy driving my 2010 the most of all my cars. No touch screen. No additional technology
Just me and my car
Absolutely. Apple car play is a must, cheap aftermarket “Android” screens are nine times out of ten rubbish. Definitely makes the car more user friendly.
If I knew my car with an 8.4" uconnect screen was only going to show my phone's name under bluethoot connection, I would definitely have had second thoughts. I didn't check it because the screen wasn't really working, but the unit was. So I used my phone under USB connection, when I saw "gracenote", I was pleased because I know WINAMP(my favorite and personally best player I came across) has the Gracenote plug ins.. little did I know about the rude awakening when the stereo was fully functional... it was like that tome Motorola tried to put iTunes in their rocket phone
My current car didn’t come with CarPlay, it’s a 2015 Toyota Corolla. It had a touch screen, but no CarPlay. For Christmas when I was like, 17, my dad got me a new screen installed, as well as all new speakers in my car. This screen came with Apple CarPlay. It literally changed my life, and it does not MATTER what other car I drive in my entire life, it has to have CarPlay. Im like a spoiled iPad baby, when it comes to cars. If I’m looking at a car that doesn’t come with one, I see how much it would cost to get one installed on that exact vehicle😭😭 it’s embarrassing
With the auto industry moving towards replacing phone mirroring solutions like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with locally running OS's like Android Automotive and other in house infotainment OS's, what will Apple do to remain relevant in the space? Surely they won't just cede the segment. I've heard about next-gen CarPlay but doesn't that still require a phone connection?
I probably wouldn’t even consider a car that didn’t have CarPlay
If it becomes a thing, you can easily put CarPlay on your screens
All my older cars which were way before CarPlay was a thing, all have it now
Yeah they also sell little box that plugs into a USB or cigarette lighter that you can make the car CarPlay compatible. There will always be a workaround
Where did you get this insider information that the auto industry as a whole is "moving towards replacing" CarPlay?
Porsche and Aston Martin are the first to double down on the next-generation version of CarPlay, understanding that their target market is largely made up of affluent iPhone users who want better integration between their smartphones and their cars. I don't see any evidence that the market is following GM's lead.
Nobody.
iPhone users have a majority of the cellular market in America, and data is coming in that people aren’t even looking at vehicles that don’t have CarPlay when shopping for a new one.
Car Manufacturers want as much money as possible, but most aren’t stupid enough to remove features that can decide the sale. GM is going to learn a very expensive lesson if they decide to go through with their plan.
It makes no sense for auto manufacturers to drop support for CarPlay or Android Auto.
The big reason is consistency of UI for temporary users of a vehicle with a modern head unit. Let's say you rent a car or you end up with a loaned vehicle due to a repair. Drivers who have access to CarPlay or Android Auto do not want to revert to using their smartphone handset for navigation or entertainment.
Also temporarily connecting to cars via Bluetooth may be confusing, difficult, or impossible.
For example, I rented a mid-size Audi station wagon in Switzerland this summer, because doing so was cheaper than paying for train travel for a 10-day trip for a family of four in Central Europe. I made sure the head unit had CarPlay and Android Auto. The problems I ran into were:
People who rent cars and/or don't fluently speak the default language of the car's electronic systems run the risk of accident, if they are trying to work out problems like these while driving a rented vehicle.
This is why I suggest that it would be shortsighted and dangerous for these manufacturers to drop support for CarPlay and Android Auto.
It totally makes sense from an economics perspective. If you can use CarPlay the manufacturer gets $0. If you can convince the end user to pay a subscription for the infotainment system like what Tesla or Rivian have you get a recurring $10/month or whatever you can’t easily stop paying.
It’s also $0 cost to the manufacturer if they can support CarPlay and not sink money into an infotainment system that nobody will use anyway.
If you google for a topic with a specific slant, all you're going to get is topics that fit that slant. You're confirming your own preconceived opinion.
If anything automakers are expanded Carplay/AA support, maybe you should do a similar search for NextGen Carplay.
GM is the only one really acting foolish here.
Only GM and probably not for long. Car buyers have been pretty clear that they want CarPlay/AA so eventually this idiotic decision will start effecting their bottom line.
People will just buy the boxes that make your car a CarPlay car. Those guys will make bank, invest now lol
I really cannot imagine that anyone wants to use the car's own OS because the entire success of CarPlay and AA is that people want to access their phone - most importantly the media on their phone and their messages.
