TL;DR
Wireless CarPlay Availability
Wireless Apple CarPlay is a sought-after feature in modern SUVs. GM has quietly integrated this feature into several of its models, including the Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, and Escalade, although it may not be available on all trim levels [1:1]
[1:2]. Audi is also known to offer wireless CarPlay across most of their SUV lineup
[1:3]. For those interested in Kia models, the 2021 Kia Sorento includes wireless CarPlay, though the Telluride does not
[1:4]
[1:5].
Budget-Friendly Options
For those looking for a more budget-friendly option, especially around the $15k-$20k range, it's challenging to find newer models with built-in CarPlay. However, some users suggest considering reliable older models and installing an aftermarket CarPlay system [2:1]. The 2018 Hyundai Tucson was mentioned as a potential option within this price range
[2:2].
Recommendations for Newer Models
In the $25k range, suitable for both daily commutes and long trips, options such as the Renault Austral, VW Tiguan, Skoda Kodiaq, and Toyota RAV4 were recommended. These vehicles are noted for being economical and having enough boot space for a medium-sized dog [3:1].
Compact SUVs with CarPlay
For compact SUVs that need to handle mild off-road conditions, the Honda CR-V and Acura RDX are good choices. They meet various needs like competent AWD, sufficient cargo space, and additional features such as panoramic sunroofs and advanced driving assistance technologies [5:1].
Overall, while many newer SUVs come equipped with Apple CarPlay, both wired and wireless, aftermarket solutions remain a viable option for those with older models or tighter budgets.
Are there any resources online to specifically see which cars/suvs are equipped with wireless CarPlay over wired?
Here you go, Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon & Escalade.
It's not available on all trimlines on these, though, mostly on the higher trimlines. I decided to wait another year or two and hope that GM's move pushes more car makers to expand their wireless carplay availability.
My ‘21 Yukon Denali has wireless CarPlay and it works pretty well. My ’19 X5 had better integration though.
They sell dongles that turn any wired CarPlay system wireless for about $100 though if none of the wireless options scratch your itch.
Yeah, I have one of the dongles. It doesn't work. There was a firmware update a few months after I bought it, and with the update applied it worked once. I've wasted far too much of my life trying to get it to work. Maybe there's one out there that would work with my car, but I'm not dumping any more time into that black hole.
I still can't believe that here we are in the back 9 of 2021 and there are still so few cars available with built-in wireless carplay.
I had a loaner 330i the other day and was surprised by the excellent integration!
Same here. Also hoping they start putting CarKey in their 2023 or 2024 models.
I think Audi has wireless CarPlay on most of their suvs
They do, but it’s flakey as hell in my Q3… wired is rock solid.
Kia Sorento 2021 has wireless. I'm fairly certain Telluride too.
Telluride does not have wireless. I don’t believe any of the Kia’s / Hyundais with the 10.25” screen have wireless CarPlay. That said there’s like a $100 adapter that works really well IME
Carlinkit have wireless Carplay dongle, if you want to get more information about it, you can visit the Carlinkit official website.
I was just researching this not long ago. GM apparently "quietly" added wireless carplay to a bunch of its SUVs. And because GM did it "quietly" they're not necessarily on many of the lists that have been compiled.
Hi, I'm looking for a car (preferably a SUV) for around 15-20k. The closer to 15k the better. I do need the Apple CarPlay. Would be great to have Adaptive Cruise Control and Blindspot Monitor as well. Was looking into Nissan Kicks but read here that it's not much reliable. We do live in the Midwest and get snow but I'd definitely care for CarPlay with FWD over AWD and just get winter tires.
2013 Toyota Highlander. 2013 Acura TL
Consider broadening options to include a reliable car without CarPlay. You can install an aftermarket CarPlay system yourself or have an electronics place install.
Most cars had CarPlay standard by 2019 which is tough to find in that price range.
I'm mostly looking for a newer car. Already have a 2012 Acura MDX AWD, so looking for a newer model with lesser miles. 2018 Hyundai Tucson also caught my eye what does this sub think about that?
Hey guys.
I live in New Zealand.
I have $25k wanting spend it on a reasonably new(under 60,000km) SUV.
I want the vehicle to be new enough to have Apple CarPlay. Also a fairly economical car too. I will be travelling about 350km a week. It will be my daily but also used for long trips.
Need boot space big enough for a medium sized dog.
Any recommendations?
Renault Austral?
VW Tiguan?
Skoda Kodiaq?
Toyota RAV4?
This is a niche request but I road trip quite often to Utah And back from New York. The thing is I love the sights of the road but I don't often have good internet-own places where I just want to sit down and relax.
I'm looking for like an SUV or a minivan. It has some decent Wi-Fi capabilities. Perhaps it's more manufacturer based than it is vehicle days. Anything come to mind?
It will be a far better solution to buy a car that you want for a car and then add WiFi to it. Starlink mobile is great. You can also get a weboost and install it. You'll get far better performance vs some crap that a car manufacturer slapped into a car that most people don't care about.
I never heard of starlink mobile. Is that a separate product from Elon? Or is it just taping an antenna to your car?
I got great advice here, and so now I'm helping a friend make his decision as to what he needs in a new car. He's a bit picky but has already test-driven a few cars.
Needs:
Carplay
"Competent AWD for mild offroad to cabin in Vermont (road has a rut and needs at least 7.5" of ground clearance) and snow"
60+ cubic ft of cargo space
Wants:
Panoramic Sunroof
0-60 in under 6.5s
Surround/360 camera
LED lights
Lane Keep assist/ assisted driving tech

He's test driven:
The Acura MDX, and loved it except for the interior, which he found gross and oddly organized
The Audi Q5, and liked it but started worrying about reliability.
My GLC, but didn't like the lack of a lot of the fancier tech because you can't get that and carplay
Volvo XC60 but again was worried about reliability and thought it looked a little too quirky/ the back reminded him of a CR-V

He plans to test an X3, but doesn't know what he should pick.

My primary advice has been that he's going to have to compromise somewhere, but anyone have different thoughts/ideas?
A CRV hits all the needs and most of the wants. The big brother RDX checks off most of the wants as well.
Since everyone here knows that touchscreens are evil and switches are the best, what are the best dashboards on recent (> 2020) SUVs. I’m looking at getting a new car.
Let’s say that money is no object (but it clearly is).
ETA: I’m looking for something that’s more Space Shuttle and less Dragon.
4Runner up to 2024 was still pretty old school. Lots of big physical controls.
I wouldn't shop for a vehicle based on it's dashboard. Even more modern vehicles with infotainment system have issues with software updates than can literally brick your entirely vehicle. Look for something older and has good reliability. Certainly would save you money in that regard. If you're heart is set on have a lot of switches to control various function maybe look into vehicles that are used in Law Enforcement, but not actual ones. Don't actually get a used police vehicle, some may have low mileage, but their run times are quite high. Take the 2012 Dodge Charger, specifically with it's shifter on the steering column. The center console can be replaced with a Havis console which allows you to install switch clusters to control a radio, sirens or anything you wire them up for. Could get a radio scanner and CB radio. Even option for a laptop if you're so inclined.
As for Apollo style switch and toggles check out Concord Aerospace. They have a great variety of those to choose from for a number of uses. Still this does require a level of electrical skill for the install. If you don't you could reach out to your local car stereo installer and maybe they could give you a better idea of cost and material needs.
Touchscreens in vehicles utterly baffle me, and I don't know why they haven't been banned on safety grounds.
My old 2006 Mazda had a great set of dials to adjust the air temperature and direction. You could set it all by feel. My current car didn't go as far as touchscreen but it's still buttons and an LCD indicator... Why make me have to look away from the road‽ It's a pet peeve of mine.
Well said.
Xiaomi yu7 with the buttons accessory?
Macan and cayenne have a shit ton of buttons. Looks like the newest generation still has them but they're all capacitive sadly. If you want as many buttons to press as the millennium falcon, those are SUVs for you.

If a model is on this list, does it have Apple CarPlay? I'm looking at a lot of different used cars online and want to make sure whatever I settle on is equipped with CarPlay, but most ads online don't mention anything about it. It's also pretty hard to determine whether or not a car has it in the photos. So if a model is on this list, is it safe to assume it will always have CarPlay or is it just a possibility?
In Israel, most vehicles don't come with carplay although they are on the list.
I’d suggest it means CarPlay is at the very least an option on a grade of each listed vehicle.
Indeed. Some Honda vehicles at least don’t have CarPlay on the lowest trim level.
Exactly this. My 2017 Ford Focus has it, but I had to get the SEL trim for it. The S and SE levels o not come with it, but it can be added. You’ll want to closely check window stickers and/or test it yourself before driving off the lot.
porsche macan has it,but it's not enabled by default it's a $2200 option.
Apple really should have put their foot down with this crap and said that they can’t charge extra for it. I know some BMWs even make CarPlay a subscription service.
Dang really? That's unfortunate 3 series is up there on my list
Stopped getting beemers after finding out about this. I always knew I was paying a premium but didn’t feel like I was getting ripped off.
On vw it was 150€ option but included android auto and mirrorlink also
Problably headunit screen has to be big enough etc.
If you’ve got a MK5 or MK6 Golf (and other models) you can purchase an RCD330 from China with CarPlay available. Best $200 I’ve ever spent, honest.
If a GM vehicle is listed as having it/ it has it standard. When Chevy/Buick/GMC/Cadillac started adding it to vehicles, they added it as a standard feature at every trim level of a vehicle. I think Canyon got it first around 2016ish?
I have a 2019 Toyota tundra that didn't come with Apple CarPlay I was Wondering if any of you have recommendations on a aftermarket entertainment system that has apple CarPlay
Just make sure it’s wireless CarPlay. Kenwood is a good start, but they are mostly the same.
Personally would avoid those cheap android head units on amazon / ebay. I tried installing one in our sequoia and it blew a bunch of fuses. Crutchfield will hook you up.
I installed this in my '07 in February and it's been flawless ever since. Looks factory, came with all harnesses and was plug and play in about 30 minutes.
Sucks it doesn't come with instructions; but install was straightforward and I was able to figure out basic functions and features within another half hour after install. (I just use it for basic CarPlay stuff though; didn't mess with videos or YouTube on it)
Can't beat it for the price.
Here’s what I’m looking for:
Cadillac XT-5
Genesis GV70 3.5T
Audi SQ5 PP with the warm weather package
I would suggest a Volvo XC60 T8 Ultra - 425 ish HP, 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. Arguably the most comfortable seats in any car. It has all the items you're looking for. Plus You could add in the super upgraded sound system and massaging seats and still be well under 75k. You could also complete an Overseas delivery and get a free trip to sweden and a fun memory.
Volvo XC60
I have one of the cheaper CarPlay’s rn. I want to get a better one. What is one I should go with. I don’t know how to wire anything and don’t wanna take my radio out so I need one of the ones that sits on your dash. Any help would be appreciated
Do you mean that you don’t want to be the one to install a new radio or you just don’t want a new radio at all? And what kind of CarPlay do you have exactly? Because… you are much better off getting a new radio to have CarPlay. I never heard of having CarPlay sitting on the dash.
https://miroirusa.com/products/miroir-drivvplay-carplay-and-android-auto-5 this is what I have now
3k wtf is this trash. You better off just using the phone
What car do you have?
2007 dodge caliber
Taking your radio out isn’t so bad. Check out crutchfield for options
