TL;DR For beginners in Tekken 8, characters like Shaheen, Katarina, Claudio, Paul, and Kazumi are often recommended due to their straightforward movesets and ease of learning basic mechanics.
Beginner-Friendly Characters
Several characters are consistently recommended for beginners due to their simplicity and effectiveness. Shaheen, Katarina, and Claudio are frequently mentioned as easy-to-learn characters that help new players grasp the game's fundamentals [4:1]
[5:1]. These characters have straightforward movesets and do not require complex inputs, making them ideal for those new to the game.
Character Selection Based on Personal Preference
While some characters are easier to pick up, many players suggest choosing a character based on personal preference or who you find visually appealing. This approach can keep you engaged and motivated to learn the game, even if the character is not traditionally considered beginner-friendly [4:2]
[5:2]. The idea is that enjoying the character's design or animations will encourage you to stick with the game longer and improve over time.
Learning Basic Mechanics
Characters like Kazumi and Paul are also highlighted for teaching basic game mechanics. They offer solid fundamental tools without overwhelming complexity, making them suitable for learning spacing, timing, and other essential skills [4:1]
[5:5]. These characters allow beginners to focus on understanding the core gameplay rather than intricate combos or advanced techniques.
Experimenting with Different Characters
It's important to experiment with different characters to find one that suits your playstyle. Some players recommend trying out various characters to see which ones click with you, as this can lead to discovering unexpected favorites [3:3]. Additionally, exploring different characters can provide a broader understanding of the game's mechanics and strategies.
Avoiding Complex Characters Initially
While some characters may seem appealing, they might have complex mechanics that can be challenging for beginners. For instance, characters like Yoshimitsu or Master Raven, while fun, may require a deeper understanding of the game to play effectively [3:2]
[4:4]. It's generally advisable to start with simpler characters before moving on to more complex ones as you gain experience.
I just got this game today and suffice to say the complexity of the characters and command inputs far surpasses any other fighting game I’ve ever played by hundreds of thousands of miles. Without knowing any of the characters I of course can’t go into pvp unless I have a death wish so I want to know if there’s anyone that’s “easy” to play (by Mortal Kombat standards).
Edit: Also what’s the difference between Special Moves and Basic Attacks if Basic Attacks are already different between each character?
Scorpion is Boon’s favorite so he tends to be the easiest to learn and play.
Raiden is probably the easiest and most well rounded for complete beginners, sub zero is also decent, or baraka.
Is there something to like go through all the moves/attacks of a character rather than just the combos (or KOMBOS more rather) that’s in the tutorial section?
There are character guides on youtube, people usually cover all the best and most useful strings.
Otherwise I would recommend going into practice mode, turning on frame data display and trying out every string and special. Check every move framedata, range, speed, this will give you rough understanding of what you’re working with.
Scorpion, Johnny Cage, Liu Kang
Johnny is good for beginners
Assuming you're talking MK1, I tend to think Liu Kang, Raiden, Baraka, and Sub Zero are the most approachable characters.
>Is there something to like go through all the moves/attacks of a character rather than just the combos (or KOMBOS more rather) that’s in the tutorial section?
To be super clear, I would just completely disregard those combos, they are basically more like special challenges, rather than a "how to play" guide, and a lot of those comboes are highly impractical / unlikely to occur in actual play.
You can definitely go to Practice Mode, pin moves to the screen, and just try them out a bit. When you get the hang of putting in basic strings and specials, start doing some Towers. Conventional wisdom is that if you can clear the Klassic Tower on Hard, with a character, you're probably fine to hop onto online
I also recommend just going through the regular tutorial, it's really good. And while the individual lessons lock you into specific characters, it really doesn't matter, because the stuff it's showing you is applicable to every character in the game
I just started the game. Does anyone know any good, simple characters to help me get started? Id prefer something that doesnt have too many moves that are hard to input. Thanks
I’d say Johnathan is your best bet for getting started. Pretty much the Ryu of this game, he has a fireball, DP, and a pretty basic gimmick which is just charging his meter/using EX moves.
Pt. 3 DIO might be good if you want to learn a stand user first, he has a lot of good moves that are easy to perform, but he does have a lot of moves in general.
That’s just my opinion though, I’m sure somebody else has a better reason for it being somebody else.
I’m new to fighting games in general, but I started with gappy and have had pretty decent success online (despite lag) after about 30 hours of playing basically exclusively him.
thanks. quick follow up, is it easier to play on controller or keyboard?
Definitely controller
Jonathan, Josuke 8, Okuyasu, and jotaro 3. Jotaro 4 and Josuke 4 are intermediate in my eye and girono’s combos are pretty straightforward. Not all of the jojos are automatically beginner friendly or good at all. In fact, Johnny is one one the worst characters in the game, but don’t let that stop you from playing who you wanna play
The Jojos are the most straightforward characters, and they have staple moves like hazards (Jolyne), projectiles (part 4 Jotaro, Gappy), and barrage attacks (all of them)
Also Johnny
any jojo really
Jotaro 3 and DIO are the quintessential beginner characters. Punch demons. Jonathan feels a lot like a classic fighter character, if you've played any MK or SF he's a good introduction.
Greetings, I just bought tekken 7 and I am having a blast but was wondering what characters are more beginner friendly. So far the characters I've enjoyed most are King and Kunimitsu but I am curious to see which ones do you recommend for beginners
Not very beginner friendly when it comes to the movement option and her very tricky nature, but I’d suggest Master Raven. the bare minimum in beginner and intermediate know the matchup so you’ll be good lol. Raven is who I started with and it’s been a long journey. If you wanna use a ninja, I’d find the nearest dump for Kuni and pick up raven
Raven is heaps of fun. So many ways to play her
Play whoever you want to play, give every character a try and see if they click with you, and soon you'll realize that you were meant to be a Panda player all along.
If you want to learn various mechanics like neutral dash motions, chain grabs, with good tools like a solid b1, good combos and approach try Armor King
The ones that look the coolest.
I personally found Miguel the most fun to start with.
He has a lot of straightforward stuff meaning you can play the spacing and basic pressure game. He has a stance to play around with. His combos aren't too tricky and have a nice rhythm to them. On top of all that he just has a nice swagger to him and once he gets going he is a real pain train while also not being too cheap or relying on too many gimmicks.
To me he represents a nice balance of simple to pick up and difficult to master and from there you can go to other characters once you get a better sense of what you want to focus on.
I'm new to Tekken 7 and I'd like to know which characters are easy to play or good for starters
Pick who you find cool, an easy character isn't going to do you a lot of good if you get bored of them after a week and then stop playing entirely.
Take your time to find your main, I sure did.
Thanks! This kinda happened to me when I played Nina, I like her design but I can't play with her as good as I can with other characters
Nina's pretty cool, but she has some pretty fiddly things. I considered picking her up but her kind of heavy poking-based rushdown didn't appeal to me all that much.
Yoshimitsu is great for teaching very conventional fundamental Tekken and his gameplan is simple and easy to understand.
Huh? How so? Yoshi is my most played character and I'm struggling to agree with this recommendation. If you said Kazumi, then sure I would agree 100%, but Yoshi? Hell no.
Yoshi can sit on the floor.
The easiest characters in the game are probably claudio, katarina and josie. Negan too if getting dlc isnt an issue
Best for learning basic fundamentals would be shaheen, law, kazumi, paul.
Though tbh, the best way to go is pick a character who you like the look of, play with them a bit to see if you like them, then go to another one you like if not.
Love Josie but still figuring her out! Kazumi and Paul seem pretty good too
Akuma for sure man 👍🏻
Gotta love Akuma!
Her and Lili have been the characters I've felt more comfortable with so far! Thank you!
In my defense, I dont really play law at all so i was mostly basing that on what other people say about him
I'm not a beginner technically, but I Just started playing ranked. What are some good characters if you're starting out in ranked matches?
WHOEVER LOOKS COOLER Tekken is hard either way. Just please pick a guy you think looks dope or has cool animations. That's what will make you stick with the game and learn it.
Shaheen, Katarina, Claudio, these 3 are the easiest to learn the game with IMO. But really you could start with anyone you like.
Any of the Mishimas? (Kazuya, Heihachi, Jin)
Sure if you want to, but some of their techniques that are important to win are a bit difficult to use consistently, like EWGF and wavedash mixups. Won’t matter at low ranks tho, but still worth considering.
Also Jin doesn’t really fight like a Mishima, he has his own style with a few Mishima-esque moves but with his own spin on them. So he’s easier. Devil Jin is a true Mishima tho.
So if you wanna play one of those guys, I would recommend base Jin, but any of them are fine so long as you know what you’re getting into.
Paul Noc Saheen Asuka Kat Gigas
Shaheen. But I got bored with him and checked out Master Raven down the road.
Claudio, Katarina, Shaheen
I'm a complete novice to tekken and was hoping for some advice on beginner characters.
Just find a character you like and start from there. You’ll improve on your own instead of playing someone you don’t enjoy just because he or she is easy.
For a rushdown stance character, try Miguel.
For a balanced all round option with good generic tools, try Shaheen.
For a poke heavy fundamentals based character, try Kazumi
What characters interest you the most? It’s better to pick a character you genuinely like as it encourages you to get better with them
Negan
When you start playing Tekken and instead of picking your favourite, you go with something easy you are about to make mistake.
You can learn an easy character in like 1-2s weaks. The generic movelist, basic combos and how to get a combo at all, some good moves and how to use these. Fine.
But it will take at least a year to get used to all the stuff which is going on. Movement, punishment, poking, specific MU details. YOu might get stuck with a character you dont like but considered rather good, instead of playing the one you liked and considered bad just to save a few weaks of learning basic stuff.
Go with the one you like the most, no matter what. Play a bear if you like these, go with a Mishima when this what you enjoy, pick a tricky poking character or even a waifu.
Dont go the easy way in this one, pick the one you like.
i don't care what tier the character is as long as it's not completely garbage juice and i do not have any DLC (suggestions for DLC characters would be nice tho)

edit: ty all for your responses
Katarina, Josie, Asuka, Claudio, shaheen
I personally think Asuka isn't that great of a character to start out with. Her playstyle is surprisingly unorthodox, and most beginners tend to form really bad habits spamming her punishable strings, lows, her parry and overly rely on her evasiveness. It's rare to see a low rank Asuka that doesn't go full unga bunga, which isn't the way you're supposed to play her at higher ranks and is gonna make them plateau.
Beginners form bad habits with any character. There are tons of string, power crush spamming, hard red rank stuck kazumis.
If someone wants to learn fundamentals, they will, with any character. And if they don't then they won't. The character doesn't decide that.
The best character is also the easiest one : Gigas. You should play Gigas he is the best. He was so good he was banned from tournaments that's why no one is using him
At this stage it seems like half the cast has already been suggested but I'm going to add Claudio.
hah yea, since every character is seemingly being called, I'm going to say pick Panda.
I would go for Dragunov
You’re so new I wouldn’t even worry about that kind of stuff. Pick a character that aesthetically pleases you or a character you’ve seen that looks fun. No character is impossible to learn by a beginner and you wouldn’t need to learn the difficult stuff until you get past the first couple hurdles of learning anyway so you might as well play with a character that interests you.
I just got the game and im wondering whos the best character for a beginner. also im a noob at fighting games
Don't worry about playing easy characters until you get good enough to play the harder characters. Play who you vibe with the most. An easy character may be easier for you to pick up and win games with, but if you enjoy someone who may end up being harder, just play them
agreed, this is the best way to get into asbr
I recommend Jotaro to learn best. Vanilla Ice if you want free wins assuming your opponent is of equal skill level roughly.
DIO and Jotaro are good for beginners who want to learn stand characters
Johnathan is also a very good pick, having a balanced moveset with a projectile, armored attack, and most enhanced specials pop the opponent into the air for easy combos
They just spam time stop, right?
The actual Time Stop ability is only situationally useful, but DIO, 4taro, and Diego AU all have moves where they utilize time stop to teleport and attack, these moves are very good for a couple of reasons so learning to use them is a good idea
literally impossible to spam time stop
Jojo is always a good pick to start with, but if that’s not your cup of tea, there’s always Jojo
any jojo
Help plis
The boring answer is to pick the character that you like the most. If you're indifferent to the whole roster, then objectively speaking law is the best pick. He can be played defensively or offensively. He has amazing whiff punishment, oppressive pokes, great lows, evasive panic moves, (noob killing) gimmicky strings, plenty of mixups, and great standard tools like d/f+1, and magic 4. Also, he's top tier if you care about that.
Otherwise, check out that blasted salami's character guide for more info https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nbewxse8DlI
Actually, Law lows are not that poweful if you are not good with the slides, an advanced technique.
Also, he requires some tricky execution at higher level. But still these are no issue for a starter.
Law is good (as the most of the roster, but also in competitions) and requires fundamentals going up the ranks. I simply don't think he is "objectively the best pick".
>oweful if you are not good with the slides, an advanced technique.
>
>Also, he requires some tricky execution at higher level. But still these are no issue for a starter.
>
>Law is good (as the most
His d/b+3 is an amazing low poke, d+4, 3 is very intimidating as well. 3+4 is objectively the best 14 frame launcher. It has no execution barrier and crazy range. Most characters favor a particular play style, so they're a hit or miss but law has the tools to be played however the hell you want. That's what I meant by the best pick.
Pick the whoever you enjoy the most. That’s the only answer to your question.
Okey thankss
Try lili
I've been playing Ryu and reached high Gold, but I find his gameplay boring. I don't like characters with very long combos or fireball-focused gameplay. I prefer characters with good buttons and high damage.
Base roster, Marisa is high damage, and Ken is good buttons. Both of these characters have longer combos than Ryu does if you really want to get optimal, though. Zangief, for sure, has the shortest combos, has some good buttons, and does very high damage, but idk if you want to play a grappler.
I know this particular piece of advice is unsolicited, but seeing as you're a beginner, I wouldn't place too much value on character archetypes and just play who you find cool. I think that if you play any character for long enough, you will find something enjoyable about their gameplay as long as you think they are cool.
I tried some characters that I thought were cool, like Akuma and Ed. I actually found Ed a bit more my style—I’m more reactive and not very aggressive. His Level 2 super scared me a little execution-wise, but I managed to improve a bit with him.
I just recently got to master with Ed and I use the ugliest level 2 juggle combo that’s easy to pull off. Don’t let it scare you off
If his level 2 is too much at the moment, then don't use it until you feel comfortable using it. What's really important in gold is making sure you can reliably punish your opponent for skipping neutral like jumping and drive impact. I think if you like Ed, then you should play Ed and slowly add his more complex tools to your game plan as you improve.
Honestly, if you like playing reactively, then I think you may find it worthwhile to reevaluate your stance on projectile-heavy characters. Those kinds of characters use their projectiles to force the opponent to do something drastic to get around them, like jumping, among other character-specific options.
I say this with respect, but you aren't at a high enough level for the character to be the problem, so I would recommend just playing Ed (or anyone really) and not worrying about being optimal just yet. You will get to a point where the things that intimidate you now will become much easier as you get better.
Dude above had the right idea but don't ignore his level 2 there are some really easy combos with level 2. Pick one and evolve it as you need to or just keep it for chip kills
If you want to learn fundamentals, Cammy is a good pick, and Id recommend Mai as well.
If recommend learning a Zoner, a Grappler, Rushdown, and seeing which you enjoy more.
Shotos are boring in general.
Charged characters can be tricky to pick up, but theyre very good to learn as well.
But most importantly, find a character you like (looks or gameplay) and try them out.
I think Cammy could be a tough ask for a new player. Dive kick spacing etc takes quite a long time to learn. Also not a brilliant driverush but not bad either. And lack of decent overhead, has to play more of a whiff punish into rush down kinda style.
A decent character to learn the fundies like you say but if OP is looking for easy quick wins then I think there are far better characters to pick up.
I think Bison sounds like the absolute best bet. As much as I absolutely hate to add another bison into the ranked pool.
Funny enough minus the no fireballs rule I would have 100% recommended Ryu based on your other criteria. "No long combos" is kind of a weird criteria because everyone has complicated combos at a certain level of play. You don't need to know crazy combo strings to do good damage with Ryu.
But, to get pretty good damage from just a few button presses, a character who's very good and generally considered pretty easy to play is M.Bison. Dunno if you'd find her boring but Mai's combos do a lot of work for only a little effort. I think a lot of people would agree she's the easiest character to pilot and she's successful in tournaments.
I dunno try Zangief or Marissa? Not the best buttons but lots of damage.
The Gief, I have trouble with his 720, but Marisa might be a good option. Look for a guide on her, is there anyone you'd recommend?
Bison seems perfect lol, his combos are rly short
Well, it really depends on the situation. Ryu has longer light confirms it you cash out, but Marisa definitely has a longer cash out DP punish. If Ryu gets a punish counter HK mid screen, he pretty much does button into special. If Marisa gets a punish counter HK mid screen, she drive rushes into that knee target combo and can spend as much as she wants to extend it. Their drive rush combos are pretty much the same until the end, when Ryu will do DP or donkey kick into DP wheras Marisa will wall splat and then juggle. It all depends on resources, too, so it's hard to quantify.
Who has the longer combo really isn't actually important at all, I was just kind of pointing out that picking characters based on combo length is inadvisable.
