TL;DR The Smoke Bomb charm is widely regarded as the best due to its ability to make dodging easier and provide invincibility frames during dashes.
Smoke Bomb Charm
The Smoke Bomb charm is frequently mentioned as the best charm in Cuphead due to its utility in both platforming and boss fights. It allows players to dash through enemies and obstacles without taking damage, effectively providing invincibility frames during the dash [1:1]. This charm is especially useful for players who struggle with dodging and can be a game-changer in difficult boss battles
[4:3].
Divine Relic Charm
The Divine Relic charm offers multiple benefits, including the effects of Coffee, Smoke Bomb, Heart Ring, and Whetstone simultaneously, making it a powerful choice for players looking to maximize their abilities [4:7]. While it can randomly change your weapon when you stop shooting, this charm shines in airplane levels where weapon randomness is less of an issue
[4:9]. Players have found it helpful for achieving high ranks in challenging stages
[4:11].
Sharp Shadow Charm
For those who prefer a defensive playstyle, the Sharp Shadow charm can be a valuable asset. It extends the range of your dash and deals damage to enemies you dash through, making it ideal for bosses like Pure Vessel, Traitor Lord, and Nightmare King Grimm [5:2]
[5:10]. However, some players caution that relying too heavily on Sharp Shadow can lead to bad habits, as it might discourage learning proper dodge techniques
[5:4].
Quick Focus Charm
While not universally considered the best, Quick Focus is praised for its ability to speed up healing, allowing players to recover health more easily during battles [2]. It is particularly useful for beginners or players who struggle with timing their heals
[2:5]. However, experienced players often find other charms more beneficial as they become adept at avoiding damage
[2:6].
Recommendations Beyond the Discussions
For players seeking versatility and adaptability, combining Smoke Bomb with other charms like Coffee or Heart Ring can enhance survivability and effectiveness in various situations. Additionally, experimenting with different charm combinations based on personal playstyle and specific boss encounters can help tailor the experience to individual preferences.
Quick focus. Charm helped me sooo much with radiance, i use it all the time when struggling with a boss! Of course defenders crest is still the best charm, as it contains 0,005 percent of dung defenders powers.
Art by TeeKetch, I think on Etsy?
Naaa, for a one noch charm defenders crest is better (goat)
I only beat lost kin in my 1st run because I had defenders crest. So yeah, I also like this charm :)
Defenders crest is great, and it makes you smell bad, so double cool!
It's the best charm. Reduces Dream Nail time, increases Essence drops, and gives double Soul if you strike an enemy all for only 1 notch.
Wait, they increase essence drops? I should've known that sooner...
I personally really like it but I think a lot of people feel its a waste of a charm slot.
Singlehandedly lowers the difficulty of Trial of the Fool from hard to challenging.
Nailmaster's glory is one of the most used charm by speedrunners, and people who run the pantheons, but i see why you would say that from a casual perspective
This is my favorite charm
Seconded! Hate the long dash, but I love that it rewards dodging (and scales with nail damage).
the longer dash was helpful in the nkg fight, but maybe that's just me.
Absolutely the best charm! People might not like it because of dash length, but it makes platforming even easier in my opinion, just get used to it! And it really helps with a lot of bosses! Another nice thing is a cool six eyed animation! Best charm ever, I never take it off. How do even people play without it XD
In my opinion, Quick Focus is perhaps the most useful Charm out of them all. It opens up new opportunities to heal and can make healing easier. But what do you guys think? It's definitely the Charm that's helped me the most in my playthroughs.
Nope, it is definitely good, but it is also definitionally a clutch. It allows people who get hit a lot to be more careless with their heal timing, and it doesn't even help against the really tough bosses where even with the quicker heal it won't give new openings.
The best charm is quickslash, since it increases damage and soul gain by like 60%.
All the ytbers saying its the best charm on their first playthrough cant play without it
I agree although I'm not sure whether there actually is bosses that qf doesn't open windows to heal, me personally I beat NKG for the very first time by using qf and finding the smallest of windows for healing, however I'm not sure about PV and Abs Rad
For PV any time you're healing is damage you're not dealing, drawing out the fight and creating more opportunities to get hit and lose, let alone the fact that you have to heal twice for every hit.
AbsRad is kind of it's own thing but still I'd say healing is a losing bet
Quick Slash is the best charm, you are correct!
absolutely not, its a very good charm for beginners but once you become experienced it falls of faster while other charms like quick slash get better with experience
It can't be the best because steady body is the best.
Steady Body is good, but Quick Slash is the best.
Quick slash is but a tool to prop up the greatness of Steady Body.
Yeah. I never unequipped it until I got to P3 and realized I had to actually get good and stop using it as a crutch. But damn it’s a good crutch.
I found that the long death animations at the end of each boss were enough to heal at least 3 hp
Genuinely, Quick Slash is the best charm, but Quick Slash + Steady Body is probably the best combo in the game.
OP's charm setup:
lol I stopped applying damage charms as soon as I put it on max difficulty
One good way I found to master lethal mode was to beat all the duels without taking damage. I wouldnt count it as a win and would purposefully let them kill me if I got hit. After doing that all the other fights got easier. I could dodge and parry pretty efficiently.
Ooh that’s a good idea. They’re too easy for me to kill right now, someone said they go back to 4-5 hits in act 2, but I’m not sure when act 2 officially starts. I just did the uncle mission so I thought act 2 was started already
I started on hard difficulty. Currently on act 2, the first island is almost liberated
I have 1 damage charm xD. But i never struggled with lacking damage so most of my charms give me health and that one that heals out of combat.
Nah. I need the charm of carnage.
You either die a Dex build or live long enough to become a Strength build
I spent ages going round the farms unlocking Gosaku's armour, wondering what kind of armour it would be.
When I unlocked it, "Tank armour? Ew" and never wore it.
I don't want to be immortal. I want to be untouchable.
Ghost armor in ng+ is insane. Fortune charms means like 2-3 kills and the entire camp runs
I wear the Gosaku's armor in certain situations, but I really like the fully upgraded Kensei armor. Huge gains to resolve during fights so I can use abilities more against large groups.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one hahaha
Traveller armour with the patchwork straw hat and Jins fully upgraded family mask is all I need to feel lethal
Cleaning mongol territory in this game was so fun that I got all the keys but one before I even found the quest 🤣
In my opinion the divine relic is really good in airplane levels because you don’t have to worry about nearly as much randomness. You only have two weapons opposed to 9 and they only switch if you let go of the fire button or use an EX move. You would be a fool to not use it in airplane levels.
What's the difference tho? What makes it so good in airplane levels?
Hopefully not much considering I was stuck tryna S rank stupid blimp girl for like 5 hours
The only downside of the charm is that it changes your weapon when you stop shooting. It can be annoying when you have to dodge a lot in normal levels but since you only have two weapons in airplane levels you get the benefit of multiple charms but can still pick what weapon you are using.
I mean you get coffee, smoke bomb, and heart ring so I consider that pretty useful.
Now that the DLC has been out for a good bit, what's everyone's thought on the divine charm?
After doing an S rank run with only using it, I have to say it is by far my favorite way to play the game and I can't describe how much more fun I've had using it compared to anything else.
You can litterally do 1 run and gun before unlocking access to the cursed charm and I litterally did all of ilse 1 with it before unlocking divine in isle 2. I also love that its something you have to earn as it feels lees like cheating like using Chalice kinda feels like.
Like seriously, heart parry + axe parry + smoke dash + auto supercharge feels like the game is fully unlocked in what you can do.
Air stages are so much more fun to S and the only downside is in normal boss fights trying to get the specific shot you want can be difficult but then you play the game in a way where you learn to properly use pretty much every weapon in every situation simultaneously AND THATS SO MUCH FUN
I love charge, but man it's only useful on Grimm 3rd phase
It's totally op lol and I love it. Only annoying thing is cycling through weapons when you wanna use a certain one, but it also allows you to use any weapon, so I'll take it!
It's pretty good, but I don't like it when it randomly changes my weapon (When I go off trigger). Also you have advantages like: Smoke Bomb, Heart Ring, Coffee and Whetstone at the same time!
i wish it also adds maybe one of ms chalices abilities
Thankfully I don't use charge too often. The fights I do use it for I just don't equip the relic
It helped me S-rank Wally Warbles, so that's good
Ehh. It's not bad, but I think it's only situational. Perfect for NKG, Traitor Lord, and Pure Vessel. Can't think of many others it's good for. Maybe Winged Nosk...
for me its good for most bosses
I use it for the watcher nights as when they go to swing you just dash threw them and attack them the other side, same goes for when the roll at you
for either dung defender fight you can use it for quick damage but not often
brudeing malwork ( how ever you spell it ) its great for since you already have to either shade cloak dash threw it or go over it so its just some extra damage and adds less room for error
makes it possible to dash threw the 3 main nail masters ( window is small but useful at times )
its great for both hornet fights, soul warrior, and both broken vessel fight as when they dash you can dash back getting damage in and avoiding the attack ( really any boss that has a charge / dash like attack its useful for )
i use it during soul masters fight since it makes it easier to get away from his ground pounds in his last faze since it increases dash length and also when he does the cube of orbs you can jump up, slash, then dash free of danger and also heal quickly once with quick heal charm right before he sends the cube of orbs out and dash threw them to avoid being hit
that's just some but its very useful defensive and good at getting in small chip damage during most fights which adds up over time
plus most base enemy's in the game get super easy with this charm
I also found it essential for Failed Champ, since its extra distance lets you dash through him
I usually take it off for pure vessel. I hate when sharp shadow staggers him and I take damage because of it
I love it for pure vessel, but sometimes the extra range really screws me over
It's also good for path of pain speedruns
Sharp shadow is good for defensive gameplay, if you want to do crazy levels of damage (strength + fast attacks + shaman stone) then it really doesn't have a place in your kit.
yep, and here's another thing about this: sharp shadow will actively make you worse at the game because it teaches bad habits. most people i've seen play who swear by sharp shadow never actually learn any proper punishes for boss attacks, because their literal only response to basically anything is "dash through boss" (and they often have no idea how to dodge things when shade dash is on cooldown)
this not only loses out on any actual damage you could have done while dodging properly, it also frequently leaves you in a worse position afterwards because of the increased dash distance. if you lose even a single nail swing because you have to get back into range after a shade dash, you've already lost literally all of the purported benefits of sharp shadow
oh, also, if you like abusing iframes to dodge attacks while doing damage at the same time, there's already something that fulfills that exact purpose, and which you don't need to equip a mediocre charm to even be able to use - it's called descending dark
Teaching bad habits I can agree on, though by the time you even get the charm in the first place, you're pretty far into the game, so it can't even act as a crutch outside the pantheon, and if you don't attack with nail, then you're losing out on Soul for spells and heals - not gonna last long if they keep using only Sharp Shadow. On the last note, if we are to be fair here, I-frames are instant on shadow dash, but have a wind-up time when using descending dark. It also uses soul, which can be used for other spells. Finally, sharp shadow is usable on any platform, and at any height, Descending Dark into terrain damage doesn't help its case.
I just did white palace with it and PoP as a challenge and it was pretty easy to adjust. I’ve done both multiple times without it but yea, really not bad at all
I did the first half of the White Palace with Sharp Shadow enabled because my stupid ass didn’t realize it made the dash longer. Took me like two hours to realize that was the reason my dashes didn’t land where they should have.
It's definitely a charm you either live and die by or you never use.
Once you get used to having it it's very hard to swap off for sure. But top 5 is pushing it a lil bit with how strong the other damage and soul charms are.
what do you use whetstone for?
I actually used it for Cala Maria, I was testing it out and I ended up beating her with that
damn i gotta try that, i just used the coffee
Pacifist Forest Follies
It’s pretty good on run n gun
I tried charge, I know for some it's a superb weapon but for me, I didn't really feel comfortable using it
It's more like muscle memory, once you got the timing right it's a god tier weapon, nothing even come close,
of course there's some parts that it's not too great against but still 90% of the game you're gonna need it, it's how I got S rank on every boss
Bad tier list BAD TIER LIST
That's your opinion though 🤷🏽♂️
Imagine using emojis tho
meanwhile I only used coffee with roundabout + spread throughout pretty much the whole thing XD
my list would look so much different
ROUNDABOUT SUPREMACY!!!!!
For those that want to know, i used the peashooter, the spread, the first super and for the charm i used the hearth ring. Against king dice for the start i went behind his hands for taking no damage. This fight was insane 🥲 (p.s. if you didn’t noticed yet i’m italian, so if my inglish isn’t much correct it’s because of it :p)
I used crackshot, spread and Ms. Chalice for him. Was pretty easy imo if you can parry the cards with Chalice’s dash parry.
But isn’t it more difficult to parry the cards with the dash?
I think the cards have their hit boxes extended a little bit more to their top so you can dash slightly on the high end and parry them with the dash. Chalice makes the mini bosses super easy and you can just spam spread EX on Dice’s face after that to stay on air if you can’t pull of the parries on the cards.
What is that achievement for
For no taking damage (because if you have more than 3 hp and you take damage, if you’re hp aren’t under 3 it counts like you don’t take damage)
This achievement is only for king dice btw
I spent equal hours into S ranking Cala Maria and many others. Congrats for all your hard work!
Now you gotta get s rank
Yeah in my dream😂
Maybe one day i’ll try it
Cuphead has been on my backlog for many years now. I love difficult games and have been eagerly awaiting a playthrough! This was the first boss that absolutely drove me up the wall with its randomness. It took me a while to even consistently get past phase 2, but once I did…it still felt like the randomness of it all would still overwhelm me.
I think this will be the rare game that I put in the time to perfect (S/P rank everything!)
Some things I learned:
Don’t attack too much early seconds of the fight. Let him keep eye beaming you for the parries. Once you do enough damage, he switches to sine-wave fireballs.
Super him early so that you can super him again in phase 3, when it really matters!
Stay up high the rest of the fight. The little flames jump from below, and the flamethrower attack is never aimed at the top clouds.
Stop auto-attacking when you’re dodging orbs in phase 3. Makes it easier to avoid them (and not make it worse by detonating them).
Cool to see someone else using charge shot. That's how I beat many bosses my first playthrough.
I use chalice and shield pal beacause I strugle to keep my hp up XD
This is arguably easier on expert than regular
Holy no hit
I just defeated him yeasturday!!!
Okay but even if you're good at Kahl I feel like phase three gets old after just the first ten seconds of AA HAHAHAHAHA AAAA HAHAHAHAHA---
Rlly tho? cuz im pretty good at it but im still finding it fun as heck.
Tf you talkin bout railroad wrath and glumstone the giant like that
Phantom Express is too gimmicky and slow paced for my taste and Glumstone's ENTIRE fight is wayyy too dependent on rng
Glumstone Giant is so fun and I feel like it has perfect challenge
Werner in 10/10, tier list accepted
Let’s f___ing go Esther fans unite
I HAVE FOUND MY PEOPLE
i don't agree with most of the list but esther winchester alone on top makes it a perfect list
The robot man
Most of the bosses are relatively easy for me, but a few weird ones screw me over often. 1st tier I finished first try, 2nd took about 2 - 3 tries, 3rd is at least 5, and I'm pretty sure you can gauge what I think about Mortimer.
Plane bosses shpuld all colectively be above everything else
I have an easier time with plane bosses than the rest of the bosses. The bird actually took me the least amount of deaths to beat outside of the first two Isle 1 bosses.
Psychopathic.
No but good for you, i find them both harder and less fun on average
How did you s-rank Moonshine Mob? I keep running up to like 3 minutes fighting them
Spread, charge, super 1, and Ms. Chalice. I tried to get all 3 parries in the first phase (and 2nd if i couldn't) while abusing Chalice's invincibility roll in the 2nd phase. And the 3rd phase fuck bruh just dick around with charge and hope you hit em lmao.
If you beat tier 1 first try, what charms did u use?
Any plane boss I used the divine relic. Everything else was Ms. Chalice :>
No wonder you beat them first try
wizard man out here catching strays
Ain’t even hard to beat him S tier. What makes him bullshit is the fact that you get so little of a chance throughout the match to reach the parry meter it’s fully rng. If you don’t get at least 1 or more ideally 2 parries in the first phase then it’s pretty much not even worth continuing
Ana Maria made me rip out my hair when I tried to a rank her. I hate her with a passion
For some reason I've gotten worse at her. I kept getting shitty RNG with parry spawns aswell :/
