Cuphead Tips and Tricks

TL;DR

  • Use Smoke Bomb for invincibility during dashes.
  • Roundabout and Spread shots are versatile and effective.
  • Focus on learning boss patterns and staying calm.

Weapon and Charm Selection

Choosing the right weapons and charms can significantly impact your gameplay. The Roundabout shot is highly recommended by many players as it allows you to hit enemies from a distance or when moving away [3:5][5:6]. The Spread shot is great for close combat and high damage output [5:1]. Additionally, the Smoke Bomb charm provides invincibility frames during dashes, making it easier to avoid attacks [2:2][5:4].

Mastering Movement and Combat Mechanics

Learning to jump, shoot, dash, and parry simultaneously is crucial. Rolling your thumb across buttons instead of lifting it can help streamline these actions [2:3]. Dashing is essential for evading attacks, so practice using it naturally [2:4]. Parrying pink objects adds to your super meter and is a skill worth mastering [4:3].

Understanding Boss Patterns

Cuphead is all about recognizing and memorizing boss attack patterns. Spend time observing each boss's movements and attacks to anticipate their next move [5:2]. This will help you react more quickly and effectively during battles. Remember, dying is part of the learning process, so don't get discouraged [3:2].

Coin Management

Coins are limited in Cuphead, so spend them wisely. Prioritize purchasing useful items like the Smoke Bomb and Roundabout shot [5:5][5:8]. You can revisit run 'n' gun levels to collect any missed coins [5:3].

Staying Calm and Patient

Cuphead is known for its difficulty, and maintaining composure is key. Take breaks if you find yourself getting frustrated, and remember that persistence pays off [2:1]. Watching walkthroughs can provide insights into challenging bosses [2:1], but ultimately, practice makes perfect.

ORIGINAL POST

As most of you probably know by now, the Cuphead DLC is coming out at the end of the month. So to celebrate, I decided I’m going to be posting tips for each boss in the main game.

These tips will be based on my experiences on achieving the S rank for all bosses, including advice on what weapon setup to take and how to evade all the different attacks. I will be posting tips for one boss a day, every day, until the release of the DLC.

I’ll be listing the bosses in order, starting with The Root Pack. I’ll be posting every day, so stay tuned if there’s a boss you’re still working on and you need tips!

Cuphead tips and tricks (on switch)

Watched people play, my first time playing.

Going home for leave and gonna make my older brother play it with me (he’s never played).

Him being the older brother, I’d like to “outshine him” for once lol

Find some coins and buy the i-frame dash ability.

The first advice I give to new players is to get used to jumping and shooting at the same time by rolling your thumb instead of picking it up from shoot button, moving to jump button, then back to shoot if that makes sense. Its natural for some people and for others it's a weird thing to get the hang of

1 upvotes on reddit
blueodis · OP · 2 years ago

Also also, I feel like my biggest problem is I’m not utilizing dash enough… any advice on that?

1 upvotes on reddit
ParkZig55 · 2 years ago

I played on Xbox and honestly you'll start dashing more naturally out of necessity. Just learn the attack patterns and try to learn from your mistakes. You're meant to fail a lot but it helps you learn

Maybe try out the Smoke Bomb item? It gives your dash I frames and is generally just awesome.

So I have it on switch. Playing atm, so they seem to roll together relatively easily. What do you play it on? Also, thank you for the response 👍

Heres the first tip just relax and remain calm because this game is a rager lol.

From the game itself to the dlc its fantastic but challenging in its on right. There's really no tricks that come to mind just be patient, calm, and strike whenever possible. If a boss feels too hard dont be afraid to watch the walk through of it. I had to for a few of em.

Most of the bosses arent overly extreme outside of mad scientist, or Mr king dice

I’ve watched markiplier and others play through it lol so I’ve “seen” how crazy it can get. Just haven’t done it myself :p

Try not to get too frustrated when you die, easier said than done I know, but it will happen a lot. The key is just getting used to each boss's movement/attack patterns. Just keep at it and you'll soon notice yourself getting better and further.

I was where you were once, I think it's safe bet to say that most everyone here was. But, like all of us, through time and perseverance you'll get there.

If you ever need help beating any specific boss there's plenty of tips on here already. If you can't find what you need then just ask. Though try to be specific in regards to what you're struggling with, such as which part of the R&G or phase of the boss fight you're dropping health on.

I don't actually have the game, but I do have some tips from watching other people play!

  • Talk to the apple guy to get three coins. Use them to buy smoke bomb.
  • Equip it and go to a run 'n' gun level. It's a lot easier to get coins with smoke-bomb! (To me it is, anyways. I've played a run 'n' gun with a friend before.)
  • try to get enough coins for round-a-bout. This will help you on most bosses.
  • The root pack is a great tutorial on shooting and aiming. Goopy is a great ducking and dashing tutorial. I'd advise you play those two until you've got those controls down.

Hopefully that helps!

Use Roundabout. That should get you through 99% of the game.

Unless you’ve beaten every boss and seen the credits roll, don’t worry too much about rank.
You can’t actually get an S rank until you have unlocked Expert Mode though finishing the game. But even getting A rank doesn’t give you anything extra to help out.
Just focus on getting through all the fights alive, getting your coins on run ‘n’ gun levels and talk to everyone on the map for extra stuff.
Don’t forget to equip stuff you buy and try out new weapons and supers.
Even if they seem ineffective, make sure you understand how they work, because I guarantee you’ll find yourself in situations where switching weapons will help a ton.
Once you’ve cleared every fight, if you want more, you can go back and try to A Rank them, or clear them in Expert Mode, or S Rank them in Expert Mode.
Whatever challenge you want to set yourself next :).
Have fun!

Always be shooting, most basic tip but also the most useful learn how to move, dodge, dash and parry all while holding down the x button, it’ll save a lot of time and you’ll beat the bosses way faster

Dashing and parrying are the two skills you need to learn the most. If you ever get stuck, it's likely that one of those can save you. Finally, always consider what guns and charm to use in each level

By pressing jump in midair you'll do a "parry" move that let's you absorb pink attacks when you collide with them and add a card to your super meter. It's a timing thing to learn, but well worth getting good at

Roundabout and lobber are the best along side with the invisible dash. Your first super is the only good one you get honestly. But that’s my opinion. Also just switch the controls for shoot to right bumper. Original controls make the game 10x more anal

Depends on how you want to play, and what boss you’re fighting. If you like to stay back and shoot from a far, like with ribby and croaks for instance, roundabout would be a good option. If you prefer to do higher dps and enjoy close combat (which can be harder) something like spread would be better. A lot of the fun of the game comes from trying different stuff and seeing what’s the most effective for any particular boss. But if you get bored or feel like you’re struggling with a specific boss, don’t feel bad about looking up the recommendations for that boss. Remember, you gotta have a great plan and then some! Hope you enjoy the journey :)

Thank you! I don’t really have a preference as far as style. Just whatever makes it easier to accomplish beating the stages/bosses. I only beat two in three hours. I think it’ll take some time to get used to the mechanics.

And that’s fine! When I was first starting out it was sooo hard but after a while you learn the movement and how to avoid stuff and it gets easier. Definitely get smoke bomb if you’re having trouble avoiding attacks, as it makes you immune to damage while you’re dashing. Helped immensely on my first play through

Yes, as we know, Cuphead is not an easy game. Mainly because of the boss fights. You gotta have skill for sure. This game really puts you to the test. I’ve been playing this since 2020 and maaan.. it feels damn good to get an S rank, especially one handed. Cuphead and Sekiro are the two games that really tests my skill. Are you a fan?

Been playing for awhile.

Early, my advice is to get Smokebomb (invincible dash) and the Roundabout weapon first.

Spend your first 4 coins on Roundabout. Do the first Run-n-Gun and then buy Smokebomb.

Those 2 items should be able to carry you through Isle 1 and quite a few other bosses.

Coffee is a good item for plane levels to be able to spam ex attack more frequently.

Have fun!

How do I play cuphead?

Posted by Aeiexgjhyoun_III · in r/Cuphead · 5 years ago

I literally can't even beat the first level, the forest area. I'm not sure what exactly I'm doing wrong, it seems a bit excessive for a beginner level with the sheer amount they throw at you, I always die either at or just after that kettle miniboss. I've beaten Dark Souls, Sekiro and A ranked dmc on dmd, so I'm not terrible by any means, I'm just really struggling as this is my first game of this style. When I heard run and gun I assumed it would be like Doom in 2D.

Any tips for a noob to this genre. I especially struggle when there's multiple enemies to deal with, the sunflowers constantly coming in, the blue resurrecting motherfuckers, bomb throwing flowers and all that coming at me at the same time.

Just keep trying, in the Run and Gun levels try to do it patience, they’re all optional and you only need them for the coins.

Buy the Roundabout shot ASAP with those coins and jump to the bosses.

Just for being good in DS and Sekiro doesn’t mean you’re already good here. I played Cuphead first and then took 1 hour to beat Gundyr in DS.

Run in gun is only for coins, the majority of the coins are there, only some are hidden and in NPC small quests, this game is indeed a boss rush game.

if you don't want to do the run and guns then get past the tutorial and get the coin then talk to apple that will get you four coins and you can use it to buy something personally buy roundabout first

Seriously it’s a HUGE help in run and gun levels and will get you through all the Inkwell Isle 1 bosses. I’d also suggest spread shot which is very helpful for bosses like Cagney Carnation and Beppi the Clown.

I tend to do the opposite of what Cuphead fans recommend - I also recommend getting the extra heart(s) as soon as you can. It weakens your attack but not by all that much, and it is really really helpful to have a whole 1-2 extra HP.

    • Jump and Dash: Use jumping and dashing effectively to avoid enemy attacks. The dash can help you pass through projectiles.
    • Parry Mechanic: Practice the parry mechanic (double jump on pink objects) to gain extra Super Meter and avoid damage.
  2. Learn Boss Patterns:

    • Observe Patterns: Each boss has specific attack patterns. Spend time observing their moves to learn when to dodge and attack.
    • Practice Makes Perfect: Don’t hesitate to retry boss fights to get familiar with their patterns.
  3. Use Super Arts Wisely:

    • Save Super Arts: Use your Super Arts strategically, especially during critical moments in boss fights. The Invincibility Super Art can be a lifesaver.
  4. Choose Your Weapons:

    • Experiment with Weapons: Different weapons suit different situations. The Spread Shot is great for close-range, while the Chaser is useful for tracking enemies.
    • Upgrade Wisely: Invest in upgrades that complement your playstyle, such as increased damage or faster reload times.
  5. Co-op Play:

    • Play with a Friend: If possible, play in co-op mode. You can revive each other, making it easier to tackle tough bosses.
  6. Explore the World:

    • Find Coins: Explore the levels to find coins that can be used to purchase upgrades and new weapons.
    • Complete Side Quests: Engage in side quests and mini-games to gain additional rewards.
  7. Stay Calm and Patient:

    • Don’t Rush: Cuphead can be challenging, so take your time to learn and adapt. Patience is key to mastering the game.

Recommendation: Focus on mastering the parry mechanic early on, as it not only helps you avoid damage but also builds your Super Meter for powerful attacks. This will significantly enhance your combat effectiveness throughout the game. Enjoy the beautiful art style and challenging gameplay!
