Cocktail bar recommendations?

ORIGINAL POST

Curious if anyone has any recommendations for bars that do really good cocktails, preferably around central-ish (Moorgate/Bank/etc) or Deptford/Greenwich/Lewisham? Been trying a few places kind of blindly, with mixed results, figured asking a recommendation or two would be useful!

Edit: You all are wonderful, and have given me some excellent spots to try out! RIP my liver though...

Eve Bar, TT Liquor, Burlock, Cahoots & Nine Lives have seen me through many a well-monied Saturday night. The Sun Tavern, in Bethnal Green, also have a pretty banging cocktail list from my past visits. Slainte

Must visit London cocktail bars (2024)

Posted by tacetmusic · in r/cocktails · 1 year ago

Hoping I can ask the pros. I'm heading down to London for a weekend, looking for an idea of the absolute must see cocktail bars, or the best brand new establishments that might not come up on the usual lists.

No preference on style, I'll take opulent, classic, local, tiki, or dive!

You're on the right track. It's just called Connaught Bar. It's been on the best bar in the world list for a while. Was lucky enough to go there years ago.

Satan's Whiskers, Tayēr + Elementary, Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes, Coupette, Swift, The Last Tuesday Society & Absinthe Parlour, Lyaness, Happiness Forgets and Seed Library.

I really enjoyed a bar with shapes for a name above all others. Connaught was a great martini as well, but superrrr expensive.

I would miss Happiness Forgets. Maybe High Water, Bohemia Lounge in addition to others recommended. I’ve been recommended Umbrella Project and Discount Suit Company but never been.

Scarf’s Bar too at The Rosewood but it is expensive.

I did not like Lounge Bohemia (if we're thinking of the same one) but it's a good recommendation for the whole super-secret-exclusive-underground thing if OP is in to that. I've not tried Umbrella Project and Discount Suit Co but I do like their sister bar The Sun Tavern.

This thread has made my need to try list even bigger.

If you're into tiki or rum, the bars that get mentioned the most online are typically Laki Kane, The Beachcomber and Trailer Happiness (perhaps the most famous in Tiki circles).

American Bar at The Savoy. Best service I have ever received in a food or drink establishment. History and drinks are fantastic as well.

Dukes Hotel. Only go if you want to sit in a stuffy room full of blue velvet, wear a suit jacket, and drink a huge glass of Plymouth gin with a tiny splash of vermouth. Quirky but great experience.

Opium bar which is a speakeasy dim sum place, their signature cocktail makes it look like your smoking.

The Oriole Bar and the Mr Fogg's chain are great it you want cocktails with exotic ingredients.

The American Bar at the Savoy is one of the most famous ones. My favourite is a bar with shapes for a name . Others I liked :

  • Artesian
  • Nightjar
  • Connaught
  • Callooh Callay

If you've just turned 21 though, just following this list should be enough.

+1 for Artesian, best bar in London for me with the most interesting drinks.

Also, Side Hustle at the Nomad Hotel is solid and the bar food is to die for - if you go get the pork belly, solid 10/10

I think you'd like Happiness Forgets. It's a little more laid back, but still great drinks, than some of the high end hotel bars. More like what I would have enjoyed at 21.

Huge recommendation for Opium in Soho, you need to know where it is since there's no big sign but once you're in it's great, loads of really tasty originals.

Also, Satan's whiskers is apparently one of the best but I haven't been so I can't vouch for it.

London cocktail snobs - critique my Google Map layer & tell me where to go this week

Posted by jbphilly · in r/cocktails · 6 months ago

American here, on a trip to the UK. I'll be in London for about a week in late February and want to try the absolute best cocktail bars the city has to offer.

Through a brief and unscientific search of about eight Reddit threads, I've compiled this Google Map layer showing the locations of Reddit-recommended cocktail bars in London. The color coding isn't rigorous; blue is the default, while green/orange/yellow/other mean that they were qualified in some way (i.e. some commenter said they weren't that good, or have a dress code requiring clothes I didn't pack, etc.).

In order to be less insufferable, I feel like I need to preface this with the following: I'm a very laid-back, down to earth guy, not a snob about basically anything in life, with the notable exception of cocktails. I only want to spend money for drinks that are utterly unique, inventive, and could never be found anywhere else besides the bar where they're sold. They don't have to be weird (though I love weird), just excellent and one of a kind.

I also love a bar where I can chat with the bartenders about what they put in their recipes, and/or make friends with other patrons—my only British friend is not in the country right now! Places with good live music or other performances, or weird offbeat stuff, also appreciated.

I have a week of evenings in London, but also have plans to do some other things besides drink (believe it or not) so I won't be able to sample more than a fraction of the cocktail spots that I've seen recommended.

Please leave your feedback on that map layer and let me know which places I absolutely can't miss this month!

Credit for the idea of a map is due to some other Reddit user who made a much more exhaustive map like this for NYC, which was very useful to me on a couple visits last year. I hope this one might be helpful to others who think in maps like I do. I also have one for Philadelphia, USA if people are interested.

If you can make it that far West I'd say you're definitely missing out on Amaro bar and their sister bar Twice Shy. I spent three months travelling Europe and the UK mainly to check out bars and they were a stand out. Also the map idea kinda sucks to actually browse, if you had a list as well it would be easier to give advice imp

I can definitely get over that way for amari, which I love. The subway makes it a breeze to get anywhere in London, I love it. Good point about the list, and there may be some way to export this as such. I just tend to think geographically so the map concept is where my brain went.

Also, it's now in alphabetical order, so hopefully that helps.

Great list! If you’re trying to narrow it down, I personally wouldn’t bother with too much with The Swift bars (particularly the one in Borough) they’re nice but quite unremarkable.

2 upvotes on reddit
Tpex · 6 months ago

That is quite a comprehensive list!
I would rate Happiness Forgets a much more enjoyable bar than Tayer,
Also I went into the Savoy wearing a T-shirt with a skeletal middle finger and jeans, my host said it was more like no shorts when it came to dress code (which was great because I forgot my blazer in Basingstoke.

As per your preferences, I highly recommend Satan's, but they are very much about the classics.
Crazy unique drinks and bartenders who want to chat about them, Seed Library, Lyaness and Nightjar are a good bet.

Hacha Brixton has closed unfortunately.

Shapes is open till 4AM, and so is El Camion, great little dive where Dick Bradsell invented the Espresso Martini.

1 upvotes on reddit
J
jbphilly · OP · 6 months ago

Thanks! Good to know about Satan's Whiskers - "very much about the classics" is not what I'm looking for since classics/riffs on classics are something I can generally make at home. I've added El Camion and removed Hacha Brixton.

2 upvotes on reddit
HippoTrain · 6 months ago

I really didn’t care for Satan’s when I went a few months ago. Like you say, very little in the way of originals so it’s unlikely you’ll be surprised. Also I found the music far too loud and found it difficult to chat with my wife. I recognise that I’m in the minority who don’t love Satan’s though.

I’ve only been to Tayer once and absolutely loved it. I’m intrigued to see if it stacks up on a repeat visit but I declared it was my new favourite bar in London (and I’m a notified Swift bar fan!)

1 upvotes on reddit
Tpex · 6 months ago

That's fair, my first time at Satan's I was at a table while it was busy and couldn't see what the hype was about, my second time, 2 years later, I sat at the bar on quieter night and found the hype.

I really should give Tayer another chance, it's just tough when there are so many other places I have yet to go to.

1 upvotes on reddit
eliason · 6 months ago

I'd add

  • Publiq
  • Rev. J. W. Simpson
  • The Beachcomber
  • Silverleaf
  • Trailer Happiness
  • and somebody said Amaro already

(I was last there a couple of years ago some some of this might have changed.)

Based on the names of the places, your best bet is probably The Napoleon Hotel, he also owns Black Rock, Black Rock Tavern and The Worship Street Whistling Shop, all in London. I've never been, bit when I do go to London, I plan on visiting a few of these spots.

So Bermondsey is a great area to go for any food and drink, but there is a cocktail bar called Two One Four underneath a pasta restaurant called Flour and Grape. I worked a couple of shifts there when I was with an agency and they're super nice people and do great drinks.

Go to the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel. It's amazing and my favorite. Lots of experimentation here.

The Egerton House Hotel has a small bar inside. Have Sabi make you the best damn Vesper martini. They chill the vodka and gin to below zero.

The Permit Room is the bar below Dishoom restaurants. Damn fine gin based drinks that have some spice.

3 upvotes on reddit

I’m sure it was great but just a reality check: it’s incredibly easy to chill vodka and gin below zero. Just shake or stir til it gets there (I usually aim for -3)

Artesian - drinks are incredible, it’s in a nice hotel so that vibe is relaxed and more sophisticated like Connaught.

Lyaness - if you want something a bit more lively. Drinks are more experimental but still good.

Basement Sate - good drinks but amazing date atmosphere. Also not too pricey for the quality of drinks. They specialise in desert/cocktail pairings if that’s something you’d want to try.

Silverleaf - amazing bar, interesting drinks choices and a fun/original menu design adds some quirk and conversation to the experience. Cool atmosphere too

5 upvotes on reddit
smaragdOrDie · 2 years ago

I hate to say it, but I had a bit of a disappointing experience at Lyaness when I was there a couple of months ago. The drinks just didn't land for me. I had been before when it was Dandelyan in the same space pre COVID, and it was great. So maybe it was high expectations or they had an off day!

I would also recommend Swift, especially the downstairs space in the Soho location.

Happiness Forgets is also great, if you're in the Shoreditch area and honestly worth a trip IMO.

Edited because I saw you have been to Connaught: seconding the rec for the two bars in the Savoy those seems right up your alley. Maybe check out Scarfes bar in the rosewood. The drinks are pretty good, but the experience and space when they have live music feels classic.

I just went to Swift recently. We enjoyed it so much that we went back a second time. Their clarified rhubarb custard milk punch was amazing! Their basement bar has an extensive bourbon collection too, but you need a reservation.

Second the Basement Sate recommendation! If you want a really good time, sign up for the private cocktail making class. It's a very tailored experience. It's also pricey, but legitimately one of the best experiences I had in London.

best cocktail bars in london

Key Considerations for Finding the Best Cocktail Bars in London:

  1. Atmosphere: Look for bars with a unique ambiance, whether it's a speakeasy vibe, rooftop views, or a cozy setting. The atmosphere can greatly enhance your cocktail experience.

  2. Cocktail Menu: Check for a diverse and creative cocktail menu. Bars that offer signature cocktails or seasonal specials often provide a more memorable experience.

  3. Expert Mixologists: Consider bars known for their skilled bartenders who can craft classic cocktails as well as innovative drinks tailored to your taste.

  4. Location: Think about the area you want to explore. Some neighborhoods, like Soho, Shoreditch, and Covent Garden, are known for their vibrant cocktail scenes.

  5. Reviews and Recommendations: Look for bars with positive reviews on platforms like Yelp or TripAdvisor, or ask locals for their favorites.

Top Recommendations:

  1. The American Bar at The Savoy: Renowned for its classic cocktails and elegant setting, it's one of the oldest cocktail bars in London.

  2. Dandelyan (now Lyaness): Located in the Mondrian Hotel, this bar is famous for its innovative cocktails and stylish decor, focusing on botanical ingredients.

  3. The Connaught Bar: Known for its luxurious atmosphere and exceptional service, this bar offers a unique cocktail experience, including a famous martini service.

  4. Bar Termini: A small, Italian-inspired bar in Soho, celebrated for its authentic cocktails and espresso drinks.

  5. The Clumsies: While technically in Athens, it's worth mentioning as it's often listed among the best globally. If you're in London, check out similar bars like The Cocktail Trading Co. for a fun, casual vibe.

Tip: Make reservations if possible, especially for popular spots, to ensure you have a table and can enjoy your evening without a wait!
