Best Views in London

Greenwich Park

Greenwich Park is frequently mentioned as one of the best spots for a view in London. It offers a splendid vista over the city and is particularly praised for its wide panorama [1:1], [2:4], [4:1]. Additionally, "The Point" at the top of Blackheath Road provides an even wider vista than Greenwich Park itself [4:1].

Sky Garden

Located at the top of the Walkie Talkie building near Fenchurch Street, Sky Garden offers amazing views across London. It's free to visit, but you must book your visit in advance [2]. This spot is ideal for those looking for a high vantage point without spending much.

Primrose Hill and Parliament Hill

Both Primrose Hill and Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath are popular choices for scenic views. These locations offer expansive views of the city and are great places to relax and enjoy the skyline [2:4], [2:5], [4:2].

The Shard

For a more premium experience, The Shard provides breathtaking views of London, especially on sunny days. Although it has become more expensive, many visitors find the panoramic views worth the price [4:3], [4:6].

Other Notable Spots

Several other locations were recommended for their unique views:

  • Severndroog Castle: Offers superb views across seven counties and especially of London [2].
  • Tate Modern's Viewing Balcony: Provides free access to stunning views of the river and city landmarks [2:1].
  • Horniman Museum and Gardens: Offers lovely views of the city and is free to visit [2:3].
  • Crystal Palace Triangle: Features unexpected views from certain side roads [4:7].
  • Nunhead Cemetery: Offers a unique view of St Paul's through a gap in the trees [4:5].

These locations provide a mix of free and paid options for enjoying some of the best views London has to offer. Whether you're looking for a peaceful park or a high-rise perspective, there's something for everyone.

Yes folks - been in London a hot minute now and am looking to expand my list of free places to go for a great view. Can anyone add to the following?

Severndroog Castle, Shooters Hill: Superb views across 7 counties and especially of London from this quirky 19th Century folly.

Sky Garden: Top of the Walkie Talkie building near Fenchurch at. It's free to visit, just book your visit in advance and take some i.d. Amazing views across London and to the South.

Royal Albert Docks. Lovely river view overlooking runway of City Airport.

Lovely in the summer to walk, watch and chill.

The view of the city from the Horniman museum and gardens is lovely plus the museum and gardens are free (there are charges for the butterfly house and aquarium though).

The new part of Tate modern has a viewing balcony in 10th floor with amazing views of the river, the city of London, the tower and Tower bridge. It's free.

Greenwich Park. Primrose Hill. For the effort, make your way to Richmond Park. There's a protected sight line so you can see all the way to St Paul's.

Greenwich Park is great, but The Point in Greenwich (top of Blackheath road) is an even wider vista!

For free probably Parliament Hill or Crystal Palace.

I went up the Shard for sunset on a beautiful summer night and that’s one that I haven’t topped.

[deleted] · 3 years ago

I was going to say the Shard. Had an amazing experience up there on a sunny day, could see for miles.

I can see on their website they've upped the price since I went up but it's worth it if its doable.

Greenwich park. I’d also suggest a walk around nunhead cemetery, there’s a spot where you can see St Paul’s through a gap in the trees and there’s a bench to just zone out on. Bonus view if you get the train from Nunhead station afterwards, makes the wait much easier when you have a panoramic view across the city.

My favourite skyline view that I always recommend in these threads isn't far from there up Dawson's Heights/Hill on the edge of Dulwich - not the most accommodating of places being a grass bank in front of a big (but interesting) council block (and think it's been landscaped a bit in the past 5 or so years) but the actual skyline view is comparable and imo better than other classic/well known ones like parliament and primrose hills

If you take a walk around the Crystal Palace “triangle” there are certain side roads that have a great & unexpected view.

If you are going to be in Crystal Palace - I’d also recommend going along to the rookery in Streatham Common. It has some awesome secluded parts and is really peaceful and beautiful - more so in spring - but all year round.

A day of rediscovering my favourite city in the world as a tourist: walked around 30 km, the weather was magnificent and the city even more so

Last pic is the best view in the city (subjective opinion ofc)

Make a reservation on the sky garden official website a few days in advance. I also want to book a train ticket to go here.

1 upvotes on reddit
Regular_Nose_9741 · OP · 1 month ago

Ok, thank you. If you want to buy train tickets, it will be cheaper if you purchase them a few days in advance. If you buy tickets with TrainPal, there is also a ticket splitting function and no handling fee.

Pub wise - The Angel in Bermondsey or the Roebuck in Richmond

7 upvotes on reddit
A
Anonlaowai · 3 years ago

Top tip: skip the Roebuck and just get some tinnies to enjoy just outside it on the hill. This way you get to watch one of the best sunsets in London without paying through the nose for poorly cooked food and shit beer in a dirty glass from a Greeneking pub.

Best bet is to head to the west end where it’s pretty elevated. I would suggest the Hyde Park/Fanshawe Park Road area maybe take a drive out to Ilderton as the sun is setting very peaceful drive.
