TL;DR
Classic Cocktails
Many classic cocktails are simple to make at home and require only a few ingredients. The Daiquiri, for example, is made with rum, lime juice, and simple syrup [5:1]. It's versatile and allows for flavor changes by adding fruits like blackberries
[5:2]. Other classics include the Martini (gin and vermouth)
[5:6], Negroni (equal parts gin, vermouth, and Campari)
[5:7], and Old Fashioned (whiskey, sugar, and bitters)
[5:9].
Simple Ingredients and Techniques
For those new to cocktail making, starting with simple ingredient cocktails can be beneficial. A 2:1:1 ratio of strong, sour, and sweet components works well for many cocktails [5:3]
[5:10]. Using standard kitchen tools like a regular spoon instead of specialized bar equipment is perfectly acceptable
[5:11]. Bitters and garnishes can significantly alter the drink's profile, so experimenting with these can provide variety
[5:12].
Seasonal Favorites
Cocktail preferences can change with the seasons. In summer, refreshing drinks like Mojitos and Daiquiris are popular [1:1]
[1:9]. During colder months, richer cocktails like Rusty Nails and Bobby Burns are favored
[1:3]. Additionally, some cocktails, such as the Penicillin, are enjoyed year-round
[1:3].
Customizable Options
Certain cocktails offer endless customization possibilities, such as the Gin and Tonic, which can be tailored with different gins, tonics, and garnishes [1:2]
[1:10]. Similarly, the Mai Tai and Margarita allow for variations in flavor profiles based on personal preference
[1:5]
[1:9].
Recommendations Beyond Discussions
For beginners, it's recommended to start with a small selection of spirits and experiment with different liqueurs and mixers. Building a basic home bar with versatile ingredients like lime, sugar, and bitters can help create a wide range of cocktails [2:1]
[2:3]. Exploring online resources for three-ingredient cocktails can also inspire new creations
[5:8].
Hi all! I’m pretty new to making cocktails myself at home but have really enjoyed the simplicity of an old fashioned and the small tweaks you can make to make it more unique or closer to your taste and I’ve been curious other people’s personal experiences with homemade cocktails that are fairly simple but teach you a lot about making cocktails at home!
I make a lot of different and occasionally elaborate cocktails, but my favorite? A gin and tonic. Endlessly customizable with different tonics, gins and garnishes.
can't go wrong with G&T!
In the summer, I’m a fan of sours like gimlets and daiquiris. When the weather gets colder I like a rusty nail or Bobby burns. I’m also happy to mix a penicillin anytime.
I'm with you, lime is so refreshing during the summer. I've been making a daq/caipirinha cross, mostly because I'm lazy; quarter a lime, muddle it with sugar, add funky white rum (currently Barbancourt Haitian Proof) and crushed ice. Stir until the glass is frosted, good to go!
Also I have a mint plant so mojitos if I need a long drink. I made a mint syrup (Morgenthaler's) around Derby time that I used for a ton of Southsides (gin, lime, mint simple). Margs of course. This is what happens when I buy a Costco bag of limes.
Negroni Boulvardier Manhattan Martini
always have a good vermouth chilling in the fridge
Carpano Antica for fancy Manhattans, Dolin rouge otherwise
Dolin rouge for Negronis; Punt e Mes for fancy flights of incredible bitterness and to be more fancy.
Noilly dry for Martinis
Mai Tai
Margarita
Gold Rush
Yes! I've also been exploring Mai Tais they are so good when its hot out!
S A Z E R A C
Saw someone mention a 50/50 cognac/rye base. I’ll be sipping that tonight.
At that point you’re just going into view Carre territory. Let a Sazerac be a Sazerac. Don’t tickle a legend

Newly graduated adult looking to build confidence to go up to a bar and know some classic cocktails to order.
Some I've tried and enjoyed are rum + coke, negroni, and mules. I love anything "melon" or "lemon" flavored.
I'd also like some simple ingredients to have at home for guests, any recs?
Home ingtrdients are tough. Vermouth only lasts a month tops (if refrigerated) so if ypu aren't using it a lot you might waste it. I would pick a few spirits you really like, then find a cocktail that you like and figure out what liqueur you need. Once you have one bottle of liqueur figure out how else you can use it by mixing with different spirits or citrus. I love Luxardo. You can use it with gin and green chartreuse to make a Last Word, or Gin and Creme de Violette for an Aviation, or with Whiskey and Vermouth for a Red Hook. Those are all cool classics too.
An Old Fashioned never fails to surprise your guests ime
Only Bourbon, sugar (I use demerara) and angostura bitters
Sidecar. Cognac/Orange liqueur/Lemon. Shake and double strain into a coup glass. Garnish with a lemon peel. Simple yet sophisticated.
Japanese Slipper is for you.
Daiquiri- simple, classic and delicious Lime, sugar, and rum. Shake and enjoy.
Hello, I’m looking for suggestions for cocktails that are very easy to make at home. Talking like two-three ingredients, pour in a cup and go. I used to drink Jack and Coke a lot, but now those taste disgustingly sweet and make my mouth feel sticky. I enjoy Red Bull vodka, but that has way too much caffeine in it. Sometimes I’ll have an old fashioned (with a pre-made mix and just add whiskey), but I find I drink those too quickly because there isn’t enough liquid. Gin and tonic I find too dry. I’m sure there are plenty of other options that I haven’t considered, so let me know what you enjoy - Thanks!
Couple of British ones you might no have heard of! The venom - Southern comfort, vodka, blue wkd and orange juice poured over ice in a pint glass. There's variations with triple sec and different whisky's, but that's the basics.
This isn't a cocktail so much but it's still a fav for me. The snackbite - Equal parts lager and cider then add a dash of blackcurrant
That snackbite sounds good. I've had cider with black currant but the lager added sounds like a great addition.
If you like lager and cider it's a winner mate. Cider and blackcurrant reminds me of my youth, so there's good feelings and bad ones lol. It's a nice drink, it'll get you drunk a lot quicker than your standard pint of beer
whiskey + ginger beer
vodka + juice
tequila + juice
Long island iced tea
just add some lime juice to your Jack and Coke and you’ve got yourself a Cuba Libre. I prefer that to a regular Jack and Coke.
Pretty sure a Cuba libre is usually with rum but jack works too!
You're right, my bad. For some reason I thought that Jack is Captain Morgan lol.
Try a Tom Collins or a Whiskey Sour, Gin, Lemon Juice, simple syrup, club soda
When I started in the craft scene I asked my bar manager what his favorite drink was.
He said, "A tequila soda". I was horrified...then he said "Someday you'll get it".
Now I do, I'm tired, I want what's fast, easy, and ideally free.
Whenever people ask me whats my fav drink I always say "a free one". Somehow they all need 1 second to register it. Then they laugh and ask which drink they should buy me then. Works fantastically well.
Also, vieux carre in good bars or a small cold Helles beer from the tap if possible.
My best response to “what’s your favorite drink?”
The next one.
I make so many drinks I strictly drink PBR at home 🤣
Sometimes I'll get fancy and sip a whisky with it. R&D is for work.
Beer and whiskey neat. On the rocks if I remember to fill up the ice cube tray
Don't start with the ice cube tray :(
You realise how much you depend on your work setup to make good drinks when you try to make cocktails at home.
You’re telling me I need to drink my grapefruit juice in 5 days?!?! I only made one Paloma 😭
yeah, catch me stocking edible flowers and coupe glasses in my picokitchen. Haha no. If there's flowers, they're on the table in a vase.
I always wanted to make a thc syrup I’m going to try
Beer in can. It’s my specialty.
Bonus if it involves few ingredients, and as few special utensils as possible.
Bonus if it's a "classic cocktail ".
I usually go for 50ml white rum, 25ml lime juice and 10ml simple syrup. Then shake and strain. It’s super simple to make and difficult to mess up.
If you get bored of that, try crush blackberries in the bottom of your shaker and then adding the other ingredients. Other fruits can be used but blackberries are my personal favourite!
Most cocktails with a 2 strong 1 sour 1 sweet base will be pretty good.
Old fashioned. If you’ve got sugar, bitters, and whiskey you can make a decent one.
Came to say the same. No special equipment needed, (though a bar spoon helps) pretty standard ingredients, and really hard to fuck up.
Don't keep bitters, but they don't go bad, right? Can I use a regular spoon?
Martini is pretty easy, just gin and vermouth.
And bitters and garnish. Those are quite noticable when absent.
Thank you. The type of bitters or garnish completely changes the drink. Especially in a martini
Negroni I think is the easiest cocktail. You can build it in the glass and it's pretty forgiving if you eyeball equal parts.
Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Martini, Daiquiri, Sidecar, Margarita, Moscow Mule, Dark & Stormy, Cuba Libre, Presbyterian, Cape Codder and Greyhound/Salty Dog are all classics requiring three or fewer ingredients. There are many more. Just google "three-ingredient cocktails". Pick the ones that sound good and ignore the others.
A 2:1:1 ratio for most sour type cocktails is a good place to start, then you scale the ingredients up and down to taste. Personally, I like 2.5 oz rum, .75 oz like and 3 tsp powdered sugar (equivalent to .75 oz simple syrup).
I think the easiest that comes to mind is a daiquiri. All you need is rum, simple syrup, and lime. And it’s incredibly versatile when it comes to changing the flavour via the adding of fruit.
Especially for summer, whether it's for house parties or just drinking alone? What ingredients and ratios do you prefer?
Always g&t 50ml gin 150ml tonic 5 cubes of ice Dried juniper berries Slice of orange
Simple, classic and delicious.
Lime , Sugar , Cold Water , bit salt and spoon.
+1
Negroni, the end boss and blaster of cocktail.
Equal parts Gin, Campari and sweet vermouth.
A double shot of each over ice.
2-3 of those and you are rocking.
I’ve never had a cocktail, just straight beer or liquor. I love the taste of orange, mint, lime, strawberry and lemons.is there anything i can make with these that can be easily purchases from the store? I also like beer, vodka and tequila occasionally.
Sounds like you're begging to have a whiskey smash.
In a shaker, muddle half a quartered lemon. Add two diced strawberries and a handful of picked mint.
2 oz. Bourbon
.25 oz. simple syrup (don't you dare waste money on store-bought, just mix 2 parts sugar to 1 part water)
Shake and dump into a glass. Garnish with more mint and/or expressed lemon peel.

you are the man
If you like really bitter drinks, a Negroni might be for you: https://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/1392/negroni-cocktail.
If you like something a bit sweeter/tart, try a margarita (https://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/7884/the-original-margarita), daiquiri (https://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/2365/daiquiri-on-the-rocks), or whiskey sour (https://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/2082/whiskey-sour-classic-formula) (note: you can omit the egg white on the latter).
If you like something that has a stronger spirit-forward taste, go for the Manhattan (https://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/1247/manhattan-sweet) or Old Fashioned.
If you try and like any of the recipes that I linked to, there is a link in each recipe's page to search for "More cocktails with similar booziness and sweet/dry/sourness" so that you can find other drinks like it.
G&T is just about the easiest thing ever and if my drink of choice for something I don't want to think about.
Various mules (Moscow mule, Kentucky mule, etc) are just about the second easiest things. I prefer a gin mule myself. I often make them fancier with sage leaves, but I'm also lazy.
A G&T is a mixer, not a cocktail. What a lazy answer.
Shut up dude. OP clearly was looking for any mixed drink, and this answer actually helped me because I didn't realize gin & tonic was so easy to make because I never bothered to look up the definition of Tonic.
I saw in the recipe for a moscow mule you need ginger beer, where can i get rhat? Liquor store or like shoprite?
Ginger beer isn’t typically alcoholic therefore it is sold in many grocery stores. A popular brand is Reeds but there are others such as Goslings (I am not a fan of). You can sub ginger ale but I find ginger beer to be better.
Ginger beer is a spicy ginger ale. If you live near a Kroger (or possibly its affiliates), the ginger beer is with the mixers either in the liquor area or in the juice aisle. I'm a fan of Q Mixers.
Cuba Libres are nice. Just get yourself a Havana Club 3, mix it with lime and coke.
Nice and easy
You're making pourable sugar not sweet water. Make it as close to pure sugar without risking crystallization. If you want it less sweet, use less syrup. If you want more water, shake longer.
This is one of my favorites:

The photography would have been more gripping with the glasses chilled and frosted rather than sweaty with condensation on the outside, drinks sound good tho. What's the coupe?
Yeah, the glasses were chilled when I poured the drinks, and unfortunately the photos took so long and the only good photos were the ones we ended up taking towards the end of the shoot, and none of the frosty drink photos looked🥲🥲anyway, the coupes are generic ones that I bought at target 😅
I’ve been browsing this site for a bit over a year now and have made many many cocktails from recipes I found here. Great stuff!! I thank you all for your recipes and wish everyone a happy new year!
When I’m in the mood, though, I always find myself going to:

Elderflower Negroni Bianco? I haven’t heard of that one. I’ll have to try it!

Army & Navy ; Gin sour ; Whisky sour
What’s an Army & Navy? Never heard of it.
