Classic Mocktail Recipes
Several classic mocktail recipes are popular among non-alcoholic drink enthusiasts. Virgin Moscow Mules, made with ginger beer, mint, lime, and ice, are a refreshing choice that doesn't make you miss the vodka [3:1]. Similarly, virgin spicy margaritas can be crafted using lemonade, margarita mix, and soda water for a tangy twist
[3:3]. For those who enjoy a bit of complexity, a not-Paloma using grapefruit Italian soda, lime juice, and grapefruit bitters is highly recommended
[4:1].
Bitters and Soda Combinations
Bitters and soda combinations are frequently mentioned as a simple yet satisfying non-alcoholic option. Club soda with a splash of bitters offers a mature taste profile and allows for experimentation with different types of bitters [2:4],
[4:5]. Lemon, Lime, and Bitters is another popular combination, especially in Australia, where it's considered an unofficial national drink
[5:4].
Creative Ingredients and Techniques
For those looking to get creative, infusing simple syrups with herbs like lavender or thyme can elevate a basic lemonade [4:3]. Using ingredients like verjus, which comes in blanc and rouge varieties, can add unique flavors to mocktails
[5:1]. Additionally, muddling cucumber with lime and mint, then topping it with soda water and ginger beer, creates a refreshing beverage that's enjoyable to sip on
[5:1].
Non-Alcoholic Spirits and Beverages
Non-alcoholic spirits and beverages are becoming increasingly available. Options like zero alcohol Guinness provide a familiar taste without the alcohol content [3:2]. Tost and dealcoholized sparkling wines are also gaining popularity for their sophisticated flavors
[3:9],
[3:10]. Chinotto sodas, a bitter orange soda from Italy, offer a delightful balance of sweetness and bitterness for those who enjoy complex flavors
[4:7].
Simple Bar Orders
When ordering at bars, simplicity can be key. Drinks like club soda with a splash of lemonade or ginger ale with cranberry juice are easy to request and generally available [5:2],
[5:7]. These options allow for a refreshing experience without drawing too much attention to the fact that you're opting for a non-alcoholic beverage.
Have you tried any of these?
I’m looking for some good non alcoholic drinks that I can order at bars. Any ideas?
Legally non alcoholic or literally not a drop ? I ask because some great non alcoholic drinks use bitters which are made of alcohol but do not cause it to have a legal abv
Yeah bitters are okay
https://youtu.be/RxgKOkE-I94 try some of these out then
I do a dry month every year and have resigned myself to the fact that there’s not a mocktail on earth I enjoy. Every year I try several and ugh.
However I quite love club soda with a splash of bitters. And it gives me a chance to play with/try all sorts of different bitters. And yes I know bitters have alcohol.
I also can’t stand NA beers or the new wave of 0.0 beverages. They just taste like sad wheat soda and leave me feeling gross and bloated.
Drink martinis and boulevardiers as my gotos fwiw.
But when dry it’s club soda + bitters for me.
How non-alcoholic are you looking for? I define it as non-intoxicating and do a Dry July every year, and often a Sober October as well (until Halloween of course) to balance out the holiday season. For both of these I stock up on homemade ginger beer and tepache. They taste good & complex but do not give me any buzz. Technically do have alcohol but nobody I've served them to has found them drunkening at all.
Shrubs are also pretty good, fruit shrub and bitters in fizzy water.
The bitter Italian sodas can also hit the spot.
ETA I am sorry! Just noticed you were looking for things to order when eating out, not to drink at home. I just get diet coke, or plain or sparkling water, when not drinking.
I've not tried tepache. Ginger beer am not a fan of unfortunately.
Bitter Italian sodas sound interesting though! Just did some googling - any recs? I'm in the US if it matters.
I’ve actually been thinking about trying tepache! I usually keep ginger beer or san pellegrino at my house as well
Yeah the main reason I’m here is because I hate the 0% beers 😂, I’ve been recommended bitters and soda before so I’ll give it a shot. Just wondered if there were any other drinks that are similar
Problem with mocktails as I've tried them is that they're almost always way too sweet or way too bitter. No balance at all. There's just "something" about spirits that make a drink a drink.
But year soda + bitters is weirdly good. Plus add a lime wedge, put it in a highball with ice and it sorta kinda feels like a cocktail :)
I’ve had some success with taking a sour build, dropping the base spirit, and adding soda. Had a pregnant friend over and made myself a Jack Rose and made her soda + lemon + grenadine + Peychaud’s. Went over very well.
At a bar though, I mostly just get bitters and soda, unless the bartender has a lot of time to listen to my ideas for bespoke mocktails.
Honestly? Soda. If they don’t have a NA Menu. NA menus are popular enough that a lot of cocktail bars and restaurants with decent cocktails will have a NA menu. Similar to how I stick with beer at non-cocktail bars, my wife does the same if they don’t have a menu. Usually you’ll end up with something like 4 oz of pineapple juice, 2 oz of syrup, and a splash of soda otherwise.
The combination of a citrus juice and a sugar based syrup that is shaken and then diluted into a “highball” of sorts is a good place to start. So right off the bat almost any bar could make you a fresh delicious lemonade, limeade, or similar grapefruit drink. From there you can throw some lime juice into club soda, tonic, or cola.
Most cocktail bars will have fancier “mocktails” which might include jam or fruit purée or more complicated syrups, but if you’re just sitting down at any bar and want to order something you know they’ll have them those drinks I started with are a good place to start. Nothing wrong with asking what kind of alcohol free cocktails they have either!
We’re heading to a party and I’m not sure what to bring for myself to drink. Any suggestions?
I like virgin spicy margaritas with some lemonade, some marg mix, splash of soda water. Virgin mules are good. I want to try the zero alcohol Guinness! I think it’s new (?) and I love Guinness.
Zero alcohol Guinness is the best alcohol free drink I've ever had, and I've sampled a fair few in my time! 100% recommend
Neat! Maybe I’ll get some zero Guinness for my husband. Edit: to make him try it. I would but I’m not a stout gal.
I’m not even a big beer person normally but might try that just bc I still want to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Wonder if any of the local Irish bars have it.
Virgin Caesar (or Bloody Mary, if you’re outside of Canada). Tastes exactly like a Caesar.
My favorite is virgin Moscow mules! (Non-alcoholic) ginger beer, mint, lime, ice. It’s refreshing, delicious, looks pretty, and you don’t miss the vodka.
This is a good option for when trying to hide not drinking at a bar or restaurant too because usually the bartender will put it in a copper mug and no one has any idea :)
That sounds delicious!
I have plenty of options coming from Studio Null and Boisson! I signed up for Proxies “wine” club too! I haven’t tried anything yet but they all look so encouraging
Oh! Non alcoholic wine. Is it bad that I forgot that existed 😂 thank you for the reminder!
Lately I’ve been enjoying Tost and dealcoholized sparkling wines!
Another vote for Tost! Very tasty
Short story short, good friend has recently given up alcohol. Looking to serve some drinks tomorrow and want to be able to serve a few mocktails. Maybe a low ball, high ball, and straight up drink? Let me know your favorites or any recommendations on non alcoholic spirits that are versatile so I don’t have to buy a bunch of new stuff.
Thanks!
If exceedingly small quantities of alcohol are ok, Ginger Beer and Angostura is one of my favorite mocktails to make that's incredibly refreshing, complex, and mature in taste. Zhuz it up with a lime wedge if you want, I usually won't unless I've got tacos planned and the rest of the lime won't go to waste.
If you're willing to put more effort in, Monin makes an "Orange Spritz" syrup that's basically Italian red bitter, which combined with Ikea's Pear Sparkling Cider, makes a pretty respectable Aperol Spritz mocktail.
I got ginger beer and angostura! I don’t think I can acquire that orange spritz by tomorrow never heard of it. But regular Aperol may be light enough.
When I bartended through pregnancy I would make myself a mocktail with orgeat, cranberry juice, and club soda pretty often. Infusing simple syrups with different herbs (lavender, thyme, basil, etc.) can also be a good way to make a lemonade more interesting and can be paired with gin or vodka for liquor drinkers.
Are you familiar with any of the non alcoholic gins? Would they go well with this setup?
I like a club soda or tonic with a dash or two of Angostura bitters. Technically it does a small amount of alcohol though.
Yep! Adding a bit of sugar syrup and bitters to plain seltzer is my go to. I've built up quite a bitters collection so this is a really good way to use them up.
My favorite combination is Bittercube Cherry Bark Vanilla bitters + a barspoon of Luxardo cherry syrup.
Angostura would be okay! Good idea I have both of those already
I LOVE all kinds of bitter stuff.. Campari, Cynar, Fernet you name it. Until a couple of years ago I thought I could only get that from Amari like the ones mentioned. But Italians have made this other great thing, which is Chinotto sodas!
You don't need to do anything to it. It's just absolutely perfect on it's own. It's a bitter orange soda essentially, sweetness and orange upfront, and then a second later that wonderful bitterness coats your mouth and lingers on for a good while. Highly recommend it if he likes Negronis, Americanos or any of the riffs on them!
Never heard of it. I’ll look up chinotto soda. I think those would go over well. I’m in the Uk now and the taste profiles seem to lean sweeter than bitter. But I like bitter myself :)
If you're a fan of bitters definitely recommend chinotto sodas!
A not-Paloma is an easy one that tastes great. I use Whole Foods brand Grapefruit Italian Soda, a whole limes worth of juice, and maybe some grapefruit bitters if you have them around. That in a chilled glass rimmed with Tajin is pretty darn delicious.
For something a little more involved, I make the kids virgin Painkillers when we are on vacation at the beach. Literally just the cream of coconut, orange, and pineapple juice shaken and strained then topped with grated nutmeg. They absolutely love them and it’s nice because you just make theirs first and then use the same tin to make the real deal. Just don’t mix them up! 😅
Paloma sounds like a must. You’re the 3rd to recommend it.
I don’t mind a little more work. Pain killers are excellent too. I’ll be at the store tomorrow and can pickup crème of coconut
I am a early-30s male who can count on one hand the number of alcoholic drinks he has consumed. I have a group of professional friends I have been going out with and need ideas for non-alcoholic drinks I can order. I’ve asked bartender/waiters for help/recommendations but it always draws attention to me that I’d like to avoid, so I just end up going with a Diet Coke.
Anything good, enjoyable to sip on that you all can recommend?
Ginger ale splash cran
Depends on what kind of bar you're in. A nice pub will probably have an entire menu of non alcoholic stuff. My usual ones are tea or coffee.
If the bar doesn't have hot drinks, well coke.
I like to think that a Lemon, Lime and Bitters is Australia's unofficial national drink. Lemonade, a couple of dashes of bitters (technically alcohol but we serve it to kids) and lime cordial or fresh lime juice depending on what you have. If the bartender is cool they'll help you out
Is that Lemonade as in lemon juice, water, and sugar, or the carbonated drink?
Damn. I’m from Philadelphia and me and my coworkers call that spicy water while we bartend. Cool to know that it’s a Aussie drink.
I call club soda spicy water…
honestly soda water with a splash of lemonade goes so hard
Grapefruit if you're not on meds and like a little punch to your face hole.
Wait why can’t one have grapefruit juice while on meds? And what kind of meds?
I do cranberry! Love the effervescence.
Muddle cucumber and shake hard with lime and mint and a dash of simple. Top with soda water and a splash of ginger beer, garnish with mint.
Verjus comes in blanc and rouge and adds awesome flavors to other ingredients as well for mock tails.
This sounds tasty imma make this first thing when I get in. Also doe all my hangover buds clocked in today lol
Hi.. I am trying to cut back on alcohol. What are your best non-alcoholic drinks that still feel like you made an effort with good tastes and look? But not something that takes super complicated ingrediens
Tried St. Buena Vida at an event and it was by far the best NA drink I've tried yet. It's a sparkling wine, spanish grapes then dealcoholized so no junk in it. It's honestly really freaking good and has been a game changer for me. I drink it straight or will mix with different juices. When my friends come over we will do like "mimosas" with it as the base. Some of the other options I've tried have been undrinkable.
Limeade and ginger beer with a piece of dehydrated lime
Lemonade and hibiscus tea with freeze dried strawberries on top
Lemonade and blueberry hisbiscus tea with freeze dried blueberries on top
Limeade and sparkling water with freeze dried cherries on top
Thanks these all sound really good! I will give them a try
My own creation is pineapple juice, a dash of soda, and fresh jalapeños (just 3 or 4 slices).
Craftmix sells packets of cocktail mixes that you just add to water and it’s as easy as you can get.
Looks? Ehh. Ginger ale a 7-8 shakes of bitters. Throw a cherry on top if you want looks 😀
I've always enjoyed making good looking cocktails. Would like to make some non-alcoholic versions that still look like I put in some effort rather than just offering people a juice or soda
So now I will share mine; my favorite drink is pineapple juice with limoncello LaCroix. About 50/50. And watermelon juice with the pulp strained
Equal parts:
Pineapple juice (like Dole)
Coconut milk (milk substitute - coconut milk in a carton from trader joes for example)
Ice
Shaken extremely vigorously or even quickly blended.
I’m going to have to go with the Arnold Palmer.
These all sound great. Thank you
Stay Sober.
30ml apple juice
30ml cranberry juice
90ml ginger beer/equivalant (most ginger beer in my country is non-alcoholic)
I want to drink less but I just love something to sip on after work especially when it’s nice outside! I’ve seen so many ads for drinks like Recess, Moment, drinks with “adaptogens” etc. I haven’t had the opportunity to try any. Who has tried something like this and what did you think?
Ghia is my go to! I love the lime one. Lyre’s bitter aperitifs are great for mock spritzes. Then there’s an herbaceous one I really like called Riverine. I’m in California and I don’t know if these are widely available beyond here (or ridiculously expensive to ship as some seem to be).
I love Athletic Brewing nonalcoholic beers. They actually taste like beer without the gross aftertaste a lot of brands have
Seconded athletic brewing, also now being carried by a lot of bars/restaurants for night outs.
I also highly recommend Hiyo’s, I think they’re called adaptogentic and neutrophics? It’s similar to kombucha, but less of the vinegar-like taste and much smoother
Another vote here for athletic brewing!
I love the lagunitas hoppy refresher. It’s 0 cals and delicious! I prefer the original but they also have new berry and Orange flavors that are good too.
This sounds yummy
I just joined Surely’s wine club. I received a Brut, sparkling rose, sauv blanc and bubbly red. So far I’ve only tried the bubbly red but I’m actually really impressed by it. Poured in a wine glass I swear my brain is tricked and I can feel my body relax a bit!
Surely sparkling is so good, I wish more restaurants and bars sold them!!
I recently tried a Tepache soda, so good! Also a big fan of Kombucha. My favorite treat is non-alc “Aperol Spritz”, you can get a Lyre’s non-alc Aperol replacement, some non-alc sparkling wine, add a dash of the aperol in a fancy glass with ice and an orange slice… so good 😊
I live Lyre’s! Their bottle art is so fun too
ooh
