What Redditors are Saying

Best Contact Lenses for Night Driving

TL;DR While contact lenses themselves may not directly improve night driving, scleral lenses and rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses can offer better vision correction. Consider using additional aids like anti-reflective coatings or specialized glasses to reduce glare.

Contact Lens Options

For individuals with eye conditions such as keratoconus, scleral lenses are often recommended due to their comfort and effectiveness in providing clear vision [2:1][2:3]. Rigid lenses, including RGP and hybrids, can also make a significant difference in visual clarity, especially for nighttime driving [2:5]. However, soft lenses may not be as effective in reducing glare from headlights [2:5].

Glasses and Coatings

Some users have found success with glasses that have specific coatings or tints. Anti-reflective coatings can help reduce light scattering and glare [1:5]. Gunnar computer glasses, which filter certain types of light, have been reported to cut down glare effectively [2:4]. Oakley Prizm lenses, particularly those designed for low light conditions, have been noted for their relaxing effect on the eyes during night driving [3:1].

Tinted Lenses

Amber or yellow-tinted lenses have been suggested by some users to reduce glare at night [2:1][5:4]. However, there is limited evidence supporting the efficacy of tinted lenses specifically for night driving [4:6]. It's important to ensure any tint does not overly darken your vision, as this could impede visibility of road signs and other critical elements [3:2].

Alternative Solutions

Beyond lenses, some users recommend upgrading vehicle headlights or using red lights inside the car to minimize glare [5:5][5:6]. Additionally, focusing on road reflectors and other markers can help maintain lane discipline when blinded by high beams [5:6].

In summary, while contact lenses alone may not solve night driving issues, combining them with specialized glasses or coatings can enhance overall visibility and comfort. Consulting an optometrist for personalized advice based on your specific needs is highly recommended.

I can’t see ANYTHING when there are any headlights in my field of vision driving at night. like I can’t see the road lanes or any cars or signs/barriers. my vision just goes completely white. which one of these options would help the most?

Do you have an astigmatism, when driving at night do you get flares from the lights? None of these options would really help. I think you need to go to an optometrist and talk to an optical dispenser and get a lens suited to your needs… for example Rodenstock had B.I.G Exact with DNEyes technology that could help a lot.

First Rx? Save your money, the only thing you need is a good non-glare/anti reflective coat. Everything else is marketing and not supported by evidence other than anecdotal. https://www.aao.org/education/editors-choice/no-evidence-to-support-benefits-of-yellow-lens-nig

Regardless of what type of prescription you have, getting the refractive error itself corrected will help with light scattering, and non glare will keep the light from reflecting off your lens.

Can I Improve Nighttime Driving with Contact Lenses ?

Posted by jkov_ · in r/Keratoconus · 2 years ago

I did cross-linking surgery a year ago when I was 18, which has helped stabilize my cornea. However, I still face challenges when driving at night due to the glare and discomfort caused by the lights. I'm curious to know if wearing contact lenses can potentially enhance my nighttime visibility and enable me to drive more comfortably.

Thank you for your response! I wanted to share that I have an appointment next Monday with a specialist who fits lenses for keratoconus. I am hoping to determine if contact lenses are suitable for me and which type of lens would be the best fit for my needs

Go for the scleral lenses. Most comfort with the best vision results as well. I still get starburst from headlights at night but atleast everything else is clear

I haven't had that, I have hard contacts.
I have found that Gunnar computer glasses, the ones for reducing eye strain by filtering certain light, the yellow lens really cut down the glare for me at night as well as day.
Also helped me all day as a code monkey behind a wall of computer screens.
they can fetch a good price not on sale, if you watch slickdeals or woot, there is usually a sale at least once or twice a year for them around 20-40 bucks a pair, I usually pick up a few pairs to keep as backups.
at this point, there are many companies making computer glasses, I have not used them and cannot compare them to gunnars

Rigid lenses, like RGP, scleral, or hybrids can make a huge difference.

Soft lenses, no so much.

RGP lenses initially worked for me and now I wear sclerals which are even better. They are more comfortable and provide better vision for me. Nighttime driving usually poses more of a challenge for me when it is raining. Some KCers have suggested to try to wear amber tinted glasses at night but I have not done so yet.

Night Driving Lenses Help

Posted by jhartlov · in r/Oakley · 2 months ago

I have an eye condition that tends to make my eyes sensitive to headlights and also makes it difficult to see lines at night. I feel like wearing sunglasses for night driving does help but the flip side is if the lenses are too dark I can’t see road signs.

Do any of our Oakley experts have any suggestions on what lenses may help me ease some of the night driving struggles without making thing too dark?

What are the best night time driving lens recommendations?

I was thinking a essilor Xperio yellow tint lens but I am not sure what intensity % would be the best for night time.

What do you think?

Also, fyi, I can only do essilor and not any other brands.

Shamir (owned by Essilor) driver intelligence moon

I am going to back this up. I wear these as my driving lenses any time it is not bright out, and they are effing fantastic. Part of the reason why they are so good (or feel like they are so sharp) is Shamir had accounted for age related myopic shift in the RX. As our eyes dilate naturally in low light situations, we become slightly more myopic (nearsighted), on top of the loss of light. The lenss and coating are great.

Alternatively, I am not anywhere near as crazy about the Driver Intelligence Sun. The coating is so bad that I can’t even tell if I like the lenses. Way too much glare for what they call their premium AR for daytime.

I use sun clips for daytime driving (Zeiss magma orange and Zeiss skypol road), would you recommend using driver intelligence moon for day and night driving in my case? I'm currently trying to decide between Zeiss Drivesafe and Shamir Driver Intelligence Moon.

for night time, you probably should go clears; especially if there is a law regulating this in your country. clears + trivex helps reducing electronic texts from "dispersing" or abberating(? word?)

The Xperio is also polarised, you should not use this for driving at night; because then LED screens and lights will not be as readable; and can in fact black out. Apple and other higher-end consumer electronics have mitigated the "counter-polarising" effect, but not those street lights, street notices on the highway, etc. They also darken a bit more compared to same colour and levels.

If you still insist, i wouldn't go beyond 20-25% amber/brown (basically the limit before the tint is visible by other people looking at you). Just know based on researches it's not clear tints actually help you see more clearly from the increased contrast.

Night Driving

Posted by Equal_Bowl8499 · in r/Truckers · 3 years ago

Has anyone tried blue filter glasses for driving at night? Or have any other suggestions to dealing with headlights and, especially, high beams? Been doing a lot of night driving lately at a company as I'm finishing training. I already knew headlights and high beams were rough on my eyes and fatigue me from long road trips in a car. I've never thought about finding a solution to this problem until now. Whether I plan to drive at night or not, I'd like to be prepared when I'm on my own, and not in this team driving situation. Sunglasses are obviously too dark, I tried. If you know of a legitimate eyewear solution, I'd love to hear some suggestions.

Haha! 30+ years, nearly always nights. I prefer nights.

Todays world, headlights are only part of the blinding issue.

Police, fire, ambulance with their leds and strobes that are as bright as a welding flash.

My BIGGEST gripe today are the tow trucks running around with a car on the flatbed, loaded but they still leave ALL their blinding flashers and strobes on.

Regular wheel lift tow trucks too, but once the car is loaded on the flatbed no need to leave all the "hook up" lights on!!

Guess they like pretending they are a cop or firetruck...

But to answer your question, I have to put sunglasses on in those situations, yes sunglasses at night.

Headlights coming at you, you have to try not to look towards them, sorta look down at the fog line on edge of your lane...

PITA but doable.

Just find anything to keep your line, the reflectors on the road, mailbox, grass, anything that’ll let you know where the road is going. Sometimes your just going to get blinded by some asshat with their high beams on. Also you might need to upgrade your headlights

Contacts really blurry in low light and at nighttime

Posted by Master_Gate6558 · in r/contacts · 8 months ago

As the title says I am having trouble with my contacts. I am a new contacts wearer. Every time I’m driving and it gets dark my contacts almost feel like they’re making my vision worse rather than helping. I switched brands but I still have the same problem with the new one. I can see ~ok in the daytime but a different story at night. Another thing is I see perfectly in glasses, but feel like with contacts I can only see 75% of that that I do in glasses. For reference, my Rx is below:

R: BC: 8.6 D: 14.5 S: -0.50 CYL: -1.25 Axis: 90

L: BC: 8.6 D: 14.5 S: -0.75 CYL: -1.25 Axis: 70

When compared to multifocals, this shouldn't happen to a wide / significant degree with single focus as the light isn't being split. However, there can be reduced visual quality in low light, in conjunction with an individual's particular eyes state, in my opinion (i.e. their age, an eyes configuration which may lend itself to this, etc.). Perhaps, this may be compounded by a plastic lens on top (more so with multifocals then single focus). This does happen to me, within the aforementioned parameters / confines. However, I notice similarly with glasses (more to do with my particular eyes). Compared to higher light, range reduction, image can be fainter, etc,
Since you are a new user, give yourself time to adjust. Ultimately, you may need to accept some nuances. Glasses are not 1:1 with contact lenes with regards to visual quantity and quality. There are pros and cons to each approach, in my opinion.

Ensure you are keeping your lenses lubricated while in use by alternating your blink rate (standard quick, gentle full, so and so forth).

With that being said, please liaise with an optometrist for a potential adjustment, as / if needed.

But if not, ask your professional contact, and if they don't know ask them to ask around. They are usually connected in the community

I've heard good things about yellow tinted lenses, you can get specific ones for driving. I don't drive but I use sunglasses when travelling in cars at night myself; my glasses block UV, blue, and all sorts of bad light and it's not nearly enough for me

Are There Any Night Driving Glasses That Actually Work?

No they're all gimmick. Yes I'm aware alot of people will respond will "but they work for meee".

Any glasses that are good enough to knock down those god-forsaken unregulated LED second suns are also dark enough to keep you from seeing deer, potholes and random dangerous debris on the shoulder.

You (or your ma) have to work on technique: looking at the right fog line, dropping your visor so you can stretch over it, hiding behind the door post for a second when those pricks come round a corner at you.

It's fun to buy stuff but you won't be buying an effective tool. My two cents.

11 upvotes on reddit
aDragonfruitSwimming · 2 years ago

I'll second this: any lens that 'filters' something reduces the light your eyes get, and really, that's the last thing you want at night.

I wear a baseball cap so if I am surprised by some random kumara with un-focusable, un-dippable LEDs, I can just dip my head a little and the brim can block the lights while I figure out what to do.

I’d say get an exam, I got two pair of regular glasses and Nike prescription glasses for 200 which included the exam cost. Wit glasses I’m 20/20 and without things are blurry at a distance. Especially with the damn led headlights at night.

I don’t think the store bought glasses made for night driving work as advertised

1 upvotes on reddit
fromthecab · 2 years ago

I think that the standard cheap yellow night glasses help with eye fatigue by reducing the contrast without minimizing night vision. That said, I don’t think any expensive version is worth a gift. Buy yourself a cheap pair. Have your mom get you nice polarized lenses for the day. Solar glare is a killer and humans lose their visions in spots so you don’t notice it until it accumulates to a point of no return.

I have myopia and astigmatism that developed in my mid 20s. I have both transitions and anti-glare lenses on my glasses but I’m still having some issues.

I get blinded when a car is riding my bumper or if a bunch of cars are traveling on the opposite side of the road. I try to avoid night time driving for this reason.

I got Lasik done at 18, it only lasted 10 years and then faded away, it's not worth it for me to try and get it done again since i hated the surgery the first time. I can either drive at night, or in the rain, but not if it's raining at night, its too dangerous. I go slower and avoid the busier roads, and take ones with minimal street lights on it as well. I schedule my errands around daylight, it can be annoying but I've adjusted to it.

1 upvotes on reddit
CliffsideJim · 3 months ago

Lasik really complicates things when it comes time for cataract surgery. Plus, I don't see how lasik helps.. It will help the clinic's bottom line, but it won't help you deal with glare.

When I was learning to drive, they trained me to look at the right-hand shoulder when challenged by headlights from oncoming cars, using my peripheral vision for the road ahead. Do you do that?

best contact lenses for night driving

Key Considerations for Night Driving Contact Lenses:

  1. Anti-Reflective Coating: Look for lenses with an anti-reflective (AR) coating to reduce glare from oncoming headlights and streetlights, improving visibility at night.

  2. High Oxygen Permeability: Choose lenses that allow more oxygen to reach your eyes, which can help reduce dryness and discomfort during nighttime driving.

  3. Moisture Retention: Consider lenses designed to retain moisture, as dry eyes can be more pronounced at night, affecting your vision.

  4. Toric Lenses for Astigmatism: If you have astigmatism, toric lenses are specifically designed to correct this condition and can enhance your night vision.

  5. Daily vs. Monthly Wear: Daily disposable lenses can be more hygienic and comfortable for occasional night driving, while monthly lenses may be more economical for regular use.

Recommendations:

  • Acuvue Oasys with Transitions: These lenses adapt to changing light conditions, reducing glare and improving comfort during night driving.
  • Air Optix Night & Day Aqua: Known for their high oxygen permeability, these lenses are great for extended wear and provide comfort throughout the night.
  • Biofinity Toric: If you have astigmatism, these lenses offer excellent moisture retention and comfort, making them suitable for night driving.

Always consult with your eye care professional to determine the best option for your specific vision needs and lifestyle.
